(1)Where can you see these animals now? (2)What happened to them? (3)What do you think are the reasons? 3.Invite a few students to share their answers. Step 2 Work on Activity 2 1.Let students read the passage,think about the meaning of the title and what happened to dodos. 2.Analyse the passage and let students find out the main idea of each paragraph. 3.Explain the important language points in the passage. 4.After learning the whole passage,invite some students to share their answers. 5.Evaluate and give praise. Step 3 Work on Activity 3 1.Let the students read the passage again and then complete the information board independently. 2.Invite three students to share their answers. 3.Check the answers and give them praise. Step 4 Work on Activity 4 1.Have students think about the questions in Activity 4. (1)Why is the dodo “just a character” to some readers? (2)What do “as happy as a clam” and “as dead as a dodo” mean? (3)Why does the writer use the two expressions at the end of the passage? 2.Invite some students to answer the questions. 3.Show some proverbs about animals to the students. Step 5 Think and share 1.Let students read the passage and the display board in silence. 2.Ask them to think about the questions. (1)What is the purpose of the passage? (2)How do people’s actions influence animals? 3.Guide students to learn to think for question 1:Find the writing purpose of a passage from its title,beginning or ending.Usually the writer wants the readers to learn a lesson or take some action. 4.Invite some students to share their ideas. Step 6 Work on Activity 5 1.Let students complete the chart with the information they have got. 2.Let the students organise the information and write a short paragraph about dodos. 3.Have students check the questions. (1)Did you introduce the experience of dodos? (2)Did you use the words and expressions from the reading passage? (3)Did you give your opinion about protecting animals? 4.Invite some students to show and read their paragraphs to the class. 5.Evaluate and give praise.
