Passage 1
根据短文内容回答下列问题,1‑4 题每题答案不超过 6 个单词。
Understanding Word Stress
Word stress is an important part of English pronunciation. In English, every word with more than one syllable has one syllable that is stressed. A stressed syllable is pronounced louder, longer, and higher in pitch than the other syllables in the word.
For example, the word “teacher” has two syllables: tea‑cher. The first syllable “tea” is stressed. So we say “TEACH‑er”. The word “today” has two syllables: to‑day. The second syllable “day” is stressed. So we say “to‑DAY”.
Word stress can also change the meaning of a word. For example, “record” can be a noun or a verb. When we say “RE‑cord” with stress on the first syllable, it is a noun meaning something you keep information on. When we say “re‑CORD” with stress on the second syllable, it is a verb meaning to store information.
Learning word stress can help you speak English more clearly. It can also help you understand native speakers better. You can practice by listening to recordings and repeating the words with the correct stress. Pay attention to which syllable is stressed.
1.What is word stress?

2.How is a stressed syllable pronounced?

How to Find Your Learning Style
Finding your learning style can make studying more enjoyable and effective. Here are some steps you can follow.
Observe yourself. Pay attention to how you naturally approach learning. Do you prefer reading the instructions or having someone explain them? Do you like taking notes or do you prefer to listen and discuss?
Try different methods. Experiment with various ways of learning. Try using mind maps, recording lessons, reading aloud, or doing hands‑on activities. Notice which method helps you remember the most.
Think about your hobbies. How you learn outside school can tell you a lot. If you enjoy drawing, you might be a visual learner. If you like listening to music or podcasts, you might be an auditory learner. If you enjoy sports or building things, you might be a kinesthetic learner.
Ask for feedback. Talk to your teachers, parents, or friends. They may notice things about your learning habits that you haven't noticed yourself.
Remember, learning is a personal journey. What works for someone else may not work for you. The key is to keep exploring until you find what works best for you.

Different Ways to Enjoy Learning Biology
There are many ways to enjoy learning biology.
One of my students likes watching nature documentaries very much. I often ask him to share what he has learned from the documentaries before we have the biology class. Can you guess what happens? Learning biology is not hard for him. He tries to remember a lot of facts about plants and animals and shares them in class. We enjoy his stories very much. If we don't understand something, he will explain it to us in a simple way. Later he learns biology well. We also learn a lot from his sharing.
Another student has big problems with remembering biology terms. She enjoys drawing. I offer her a lot of biology pictures without labels. She wants to learn one of them well. I advise her to write down the labels one by one when she looks at the picture. She says she has never tried this way before. It is really helpful and her memory has been improved.

Passage 4
As you know, homework is a big part of going to school. Luckily, here are several suggestions for you to make homework easy.
Make a homework plan
Most middle school students have two or three hours of homework a night. If it is a heavy homework day, you may need to spend even more time. It is a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule (进度表), especially if you are going to do sports or other activities after school.
Watch where you work
A bedroom, study or any room where you can get away from noise is good for you to do your homework. But don’t study on your comfortable bed, or you might fall asleep there.
Take a break
Most people’s attention doesn’t last very long, so take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without relaxing will make you less productive (高效的) than if you stop to take a break regularly. Taking a 15‑minute break every hour is a good way for most people.
Get help when you need it
Sometimes even though you are listening carefully in class, some subjects seem too hard. The first person to ask for help is your teacher. He or she may be able to work with you before or after school and explain things more clearly. Your classmates may also be able to give you a hand. However, this might not give you the results you want. Lots of people understand something well but are not able to explain it.
1.What should you do if you have too much homework and you plan to do sports or other activities after school?
_____________________________________________________________
2.Why can’t we do homework on the comfortable bed?
_____________________________________________________________
3.How long can we take a rest after doing an hour of homework?

4.Who can you ask for help first if you find some subjects hard to learn?

5.How do you make your homework easy? Why?

Passage 5
Many people think that learning English is only about studying grammar and vocabulary. However, using the language in real life is just as important. For example, joining an English club or talking with foreigners can help you practice speaking.
Another useful method is to keep a learning diary. Write down what you learned each day and how you felt. This helps you see your progress and stay motivated. Also, try to think in English. When you see something, ask yourself, “How do I say this in English?” This simple habit can improve your fluency.
Remember, the goal is not to be perfect, but to communicate effectively. Don’t let fear stop you from trying.

Passage 7
阅读短文,掌握大意,并回答以下问题。
Cross‑Cultural Body Language Misunderstandings and Solutions
As the world becomes more interconnected, cross‑cultural communication is increasingly common. Body language, as a key part of communication, often leads to misunderstandings if we ignore cultural differences.
A friend of mine once had an embarrassing experience in the US. He met a local professor and avoided eye contact because in Chinese culture, it’s a sign of respect to look down when communicating with elders or superiors. However, the professor thought he was hiding something or lacking confidence. This is a typical example of how cultural differences in body language can cause misunderstandings.
Another common case is the “OK” gesture. In many Western countries, it means “good” or “acceptable”, but in some countries like Brazil and Germany, it is considered impolite. Similarly, shaking hands is a universal greeting in most countries, but the strength and duration vary. A firm handshake is appreciated in the US, while a gentle handshake is more suitable in Japan.
To avoid such misunderstandings, we should learn about the body language customs of different cultures before communicating with people from other countries. We can read books, search online, or consult people who have experience in cross‑cultural communication. When in doubt, we can observe others’ body language and follow their example. By being aware of these differences, we can communicate more effectively and build better relationships with people from all over the world.
1.Why did the author’s friend avoid eye contact with the US professor?
______________________________________________________________ 2.What did the US professor think of the author’s friend’s behavior?
________________________________________________________ 3.In which countries is the “OK” gesture considered impolite?

Passage 8
Studying a foreign language
Mike
At the moment, I’m learning Spanish because I’d like to be a newspaperman one day, and being able to speak other languages is important for this job. It wasn’t possible to learn Spanish at school, but a friend of mine knew a woman who could give me lessons and now she comes to my house twice a week. It was difficult at first because I was a complete beginner. But I worked hard and after just six months, I was able to speak and write the language quite well. I’m really happy about that.
Lucy
I lived in lots of different countries because of my dad’s job, so I had to learn several different languages. I seem to learn them quite easily. The last place I lived was Thailand (泰国). Now I’m back in my home country, but I still study Thai. I want to keep chatting with my Thai classmates. I found a new app with exercises in Thai, and I can’t wait to use it each morning because it’s so much fun.
Anna
My mum comes from Russia and her parents still live there. We often stay with them during the school holidays, but unluckily I didn’t learn Russian when I was little, so talking to them was always hard. After our last trip, I decided it was time for me to learn the language and I found a course at my local college‑we work hard and the teacher makes us laugh. I think that’s why I never forget any of the words she teaches us.

Studying in groups is helpful to our study. It has become popular in class and has many advantages. For example, we can not only save time but also encourage each other when we study in groups.
I still remember when I was in Grade 8, my physics was very poor. I had a really hard time with it. Once in class, the teacher asked us to discuss questions with each other. Because I was very shy, I could not do it like what he told me. My physics teacher encouraged me to face others and talk with someone else. Then I studied with some classmates together. When I did not understand any question, they could give me some suggestions and I could quickly find out the ways to deal with the problems. After that I felt very relaxed and asked my classmates a lot of questions about physics. Finally, I finished my homework by myself for the first time. How excited I was!
Since I began to study in groups, I’m no longer worried about learning physics. With my classmates’ help, I get more confidence. It also gives me more chances to improve myself in many ways. So let’s study more in groups.

Passage 10
Being a good learner is easy if you have small, good habits. I’m a Grade 8 student, and these habits help me study better every day.
First, I take notes in class. When the teacher talks about important things—like math rules or English grammar—I write them down in a notebook. After class, I look at the notes again. This helps me remember what I learned. Second, I finish homework on time. I never wait until the night before to do it. I do a little each day, so I don’t feel stressed. Third, I share ideas with my classmates. When we study in groups, we talk about difficult questions. Sometimes, their ideas help me understand things I couldn’t get alone.
My teacher says, “Good habits make good learners.” Now, I like studying more, and my grades are getting better too.

培优拔高·挑战攻坚
Passage 1
The task of students who come to school is to study. Studying requires (需要) the right way, or you will waste either time or money. The following are the ways of studying.
The best time for reading is morning, because in the morning, the mind is clear. For that reason, we can get good results.
We must have patience (耐心) when studying. If we have not learned a text well, we must read it again and again. We should not read the next one till we have understood the first one.
When we are studying, we must put our hearts into the book, or we can get nothing from the book.
We must always ask “why”. If there is something we don’t understand, we should write it down and ask our teachers, parents or friends for help. In any possible way, we must master it thoroughly, so that we can use what we’ve learned well.
Though there are many ways of studying, the ways mentioned above will be quite enough if we can keep them in our hearts and put them into practice.

Passage 2
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答下列问题,每题答案不超过 6 个单词。
Sense Groups and Pauses in English
When we speak English, we don’t say all the words in a sentence without stopping. We divide sentences into smaller parts called “sense groups”. A sense group is a group of words that makes sense together. We usually pause between sense groups to make our speech clearer and easier to understand.
For example, in the sentence “The Palace Museum lies in the center of Beijing”, we can divide it into sense groups like this: “The Palace Museum / lies in the center of Beijing”. The first group tells us what we are talking about, and the second group tells us where it is.
We often use commas to show where to pause. For example: “In Paris, the capital of France, the Eiffel Tower is a popular tourist site.” We pause after “Paris” and after “France”.
Using sense groups and pauses correctly can make your English sound more natural and fluent. It also helps listeners understand you better.
1.What are sense groups?

2.Why do we pause between sense groups?

3.What is used to show where to pause?

Some students seem to learn things faster than others. What is their secret? Here are some habits of successful learners.
Stay organized. Good learners keep their study materials in order. They have a clear plan for each day. They know what they need to do and when to do it. This helps them save time and reduce stress.
Ask questions. Successful learners are curious. They don’t just accept information passively. They ask “why” and “how” to understand things deeply. They are not afraid to say “I don’t understand” and seek clarification.
Manage time well. Good learners use their time wisely. They set aside specific time for studying and stick to it. They take breaks when needed but don’t waste time on distractions.
Stay motivated. Learning can be challenging, but successful learners keep their motivation high. They set small goals and celebrate their progress. They remind themselves why learning is important.

Passage 4
Americans love their dogs and look after them well. They walk their dogs, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. So there are many expressions about the dog in English.
Some people say we live in a “dog‑eat‑dog” world. That means in order to be successful, people have to work hard and compete (竞争) against each other fiercely (激烈地). Such hard work can make people “dog‑tired”. And, the situation will be even worse if they become a “sick dog”.
Still, people say “Every dog has its day”. This means that every person enjoys some successful days during his or her life. We can describe someone who is unkind as a “junkyard dog”. A junkyard is not a fun place for a dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things that they don’t want.
Husbands and wives use this expression “doghouse” when they are angry with each other. For example, a woman might get angry with her husband for coming home late. She might tell him that he is in the “doghouse” now.
People also use dog expressions to describe the weather. “The dog days of summer” are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may make the weather cool. But we do not want too much heavy rain. We do not want it to rain “cats and dogs”.

How Body Language Influences Our Social Success
Many people don’t realize that body language has a great impact on our social success. Whether it’s making friends, participating in activities, or even future career development, proper body language can give us an advantage.
Confident body language is the key to making a good first impression. When meeting new people, standing tall, keeping a natural smile, and making eye contact for 3‑5 seconds can show your confidence and friendliness. People are more likely to be drawn to those who display confident body language and are willing to establish connections with them.
In social gatherings, active body language helps you integrate into the group quickly. For example, when others are talking, nodding to show agreement, using small gestures to express your opinions, and facing the group instead of turning away can make you look more approachable. On the other hand, people who fold their arms, stand alone in the corner, or avoid interacting with others through body language may be left out.
Moreover, body language can also reflect our inner state. People with positive body language are often more optimistic and energetic, which can inspire those around them. In team activities, such body language can boost team morale and improve cooperation efficiency. Therefore, learning to use proper body language is essential for everyone who wants to achieve social success.
1.What is the key to making a good first impression according to the passage?
______________________________________
2.What confident body language can we use when meeting new people?
_______________________________________
3.How can active body language help us in social gatherings?

4.What kind of body language may make people feel left out in social gatherings?

Passage 6
It was sunny on Oct. 30th last year. Zhang Siwen, 13, found some special fruit at school. She picked one, but not for fun. She wanted to take notes about the fruit. She carefully drew different parts of the fruit and wrote down some information. A few months later, her nature‑related (与自然相关的) notes won a prize in a science competition.
Many students in Shanghai collect fruits, flowers and other plants and write down notes with pictures and information. They learn more about nature through writing these notes. They also add some other information in their notes, such as when and where they got the plants, what the weather was like and how they felt at that time.
For many students, taking these nature notes is a way to find out something new. Zhang is one of them. When she wrote new fruit notes, she first drew a picture of the fruit. Then she learned about its length (长度) with a ruler. Next, she broke the fruit open. She touched, got the juice and smelt it to learn more. “If you open and press some fruits, you’ll find they are juicy,” she said.
Writing notes on nature can also make students become more creative. “When writing these notes, you can describe everything in your own way,” said Zhang Siwen.

Class participation (参与) is a key part of learning. It helps us understand lessons better and makes classes more interesting. Many students don’t like to participate in class. I think the reason is they are a bit shy. Here are some suggestions that can help you be a good class participant.
First, do the homework and review notes before class. This way, when the teacher asks questions, you can have good answers to present in class.
Then, when you get ready for class, think about important questions that may come up in class. Writing down such questions helps you speak up faster. You should listen to what the other students say in class. You can build on their comments (意见) to make your own.
Next, remember to be brave. Your teacher and classmates want to hear your thoughts. They can give you some help. Don’t be scared to ask questions either. This is a good learning skill. If you don’t understand anything, just ask. Other students might have the same question and feel happy when you spoke up. Be sure that your questions and comments are related to the class topic. Don’t waste the time of the teacher by asking something useless.
Last but not least, come to class early and chat with some classmates. These will make you more comfortable about participating in class.

5.We should learn about the body language customs of different cultures before communicating, for example by reading books, searching online or consulting experienced people, and when in doubt, observe others’ body language and follow their example.
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了跨文化交际中肢体语言的误解及其解决方案。
【详解】1.根据 “He met a local professor and avoided eye contact because in Chinese culture, it’s a sign of respect to look down when communicating with elders or superiors.” 可知,他在美国遇到一位当地教授时避免眼神接触,因为在中国文化中,与长辈或上级交流时低头是一种尊重的表现。故填 Because in Chinese culture, it’s a sign of respect to look down when communicating with elders or superiors.

When I did not understand any question, they could give me some suggestions and I could quickly find out the ways to deal with the problems. After that I felt very relaxed and asked my classmates a lot of questions about physics. Finally, I finished my homework by myself for the first time. How excited I was!

Being a good learner is easy if you have small, good habits. I’m a Grade 8 student, and these habits help me study better every day.
