Standing outside the dining hall during Family Weekend, my dad looked at the breathtaking sunset and sighed, “Man, I could have gone to Stanford if I’d been born in the US.”
I laughed, unsure how to respond. At Stanford, seniors talked about “impostor syndrome” (冒名者综合征) — the feeling of not deserving success. I never felt it when comparing myself to peers, but standing with my dad, I finally understood. I was comparing myself to an imagined father — one who could have seized every opportunity here.
My dad grew up in Guatemala. His mother died when he was eight, and his father was in the US. He raised eight siblings (手足), worked hard, and earned an engineering scholarship. I am an English major. When I first told him, he joked, “But you already speak English. I should take those classes.”
A line in Shakespeare’s Hamlet came to me: “So excellent a king, that was to this, Hyperion to a satyr.” Hamlet compares his noble father to Hyperion, the god of the sun, and his evil uncle to a satyr, a half-man, half-goat creature. Underneath that sunset, I felt exactly like the satyr standing next to Hyperion. Even with orange rays landing on my skin, I felt small next to him. I thought, “If he achieved so much with so little, I have to do twice as much.” But then he turned to me and said simply, “I’m glad you’re here.”
First-generation kids of immigrants feel the weight of their family’s past. For a second, I worried that I was letting my dad down. I felt both the need to match his life, enduring his hardships, and the guilt that his circumstances held him back. But I realized my being here at Stanford was that “more”. My dad loves his life, never comparing it with anyone else’s. His enjoying the idea of being a student here doesn’t mean I must chase what he could have done. I do plenty on my own, and I’ve got to be as proud as he is. If all a boy wants is his father, all a father wants is his son’s happiness. So excellent a king he is, my dad. I will be excellent in my own way.
24. When did the author experience the “impostor syndrome”?
A. When he competed with his fellow students.
B. When he thought about his father’s childhood.
C. When he compared himself with an imagined father.
D. When he recalled his identity as a first-generation immigrant.
25. What can be inferred about the author’s father from the text?
A. He was raised by his parents in the United States.
B. He became an engineer after getting a scholarship.
C. He blamed his circumstances for his life’s limitations.
D. He showed strength and responsibility while growing up.
26. Why does the author quote the line from Hamlet in paragraph 4?
A. To demonstrate admiration for Shakespeare’s works.
B. To indicate the huge gap between him and his father.
C. To prove that he considered himself as ugly as the satyr.
D. To explain why he chose English as his major.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. My King and My Way B. The Need to Match
C. The Weight of Family’s Past D. Following His Unrealized Dream

A study conducted in Austria has revealed that listening to music you dislike might actually increase your desire for sugary foods, even when your overall appetite drops.
The findings, published in Appetite, suggest that disliked music triggers a form of compensatory (补偿的) eating — a psychological mechanism where the brain seeks high-reward comfort foods to reduce negative emotions.
The research team, led by Jonas Potthoff and Anne Schienle, divided 106 participants into three groups: one listened to self-selected liked music, another listened to disliked music, and a third experienced silence. Before and after the listening session, participants rated their general desire to eat and their emotional state. They were then presented with a buffet table displaying three high-sugar items, three low-sugar options, and three non-food objects. Using an eye tracker, the researchers recorded visual attention before allowing participants to eat freely.
The results were striking. After listening to disliked music, participants reported a lower general desire to eat — yet nearly 62% of them chose high-sugar sweets. In contrast, only 24% of those who listened to liked music favored sugary treats, with the majority preferring fruits. The no-music group fell in between, at 38%.
Interestingly, the disliked music did not significantly change visual attention toward food. Participants looked at food items longer than non-food items regardless of the musical condition, suggesting that the preference for sugar was driven by mood regulation rather than visual fixation. Because the unpleasant music undermined their emotional state, their brains in turn reached for comfort food rich in sugar as a coping mechanism — a classic example of emotional eating.
The authors concluded that music can influence food-related decision-making independently of attentional processes. While liked music may encourage healthier choices, disliked music increases the tendency to choose high-sugar foods even when the general appetite is depressed. These findings highlight music’s potential as a subtle (微妙的), non-caloric influence for promoting low-sugar eating behavior.
28. Why do people prefer sugary food after hearing unpleasant music?
A. Sugary food can help relieve bad feelings.
B. Bad music makes people pay visual attention to sweets.
C. People’s appetite rises sharply in negative moods.
D. Sweet food helps people forget the bad music quickly.
29. How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. They surveyed people’s music preferences.
B. They compared subjects’ food choices in different groups.
C. They analyzed different causes of bad moods.
D. They recorded people’s brain activity after eating.
30. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “undermined” in paragraph 5?
A. Maintained. B. Restored. C. Lifted. D. Worsened.
31. What can we infer about the effect of music from the text?
A. Pleasant music may help people pick healthier food.
B. A music-free environment leads to the lowest sugar intake.
C. Bad music can totally make people lose interest in food.
D. Your visual preference for food is determined by music.

ByteDance’s AI chatbot Doubao has long been free to use, but recent online news of a paid subscription plan has sparked widespread debate. Although the company has said the plan is still being tested, the possibility of paid features has already set off strong reactions from users, revealing both concern and cautious acceptance.
Pricing is at the center of the debate. Many users who are used to free AI services argue that the proposed fees are relatively high, especially when alternative tools are still available for free. Some even say they would switch platforms if the paid features fail to offer clear advantages. Others, however, take a more practical view, noting that such technology, especially one that requires intensive computing resources, cannot remain free indefinitely. The proposed paid zones are expected to offer faster responses and more advanced features, mainly targeting professionals and frequent users. For these users, who often need greater efficiency and more polished outputs, paying for enhanced services may be justified, as it could significantly improve productivity. For casual users, however, who mainly rely on basic functions, the appeal of paid upgrades remains uncertain.
This split (分歧) in user attitudes points to a wider challenge facing the AI industry: how to balance accessibility with profitability. Professor Huang Zhuo, Vice Dean of Peking University’s National Development Research Institute and an expert in digital economy, stated, “AI’s high computing costs make free-only models unsustainable; however, platforms must keep basic services affordable to maintain broad user access.” Free services can help platforms attract large user bases, but long-term sustainability requires income streams that can cover rising costs and support continued innovation.
Ultimately, Doubao’s attempt to introduce paid features comes during rapid industry expansion and raises a key question: can AI platforms make profits effectively without letting down users who have grown accustomed to free access? The answer remains unclear, but it may help shape the future direction of AI services.
32. Why are some users willing to accept the paid subscription plan?
A. They think the fees are affordable. B. Paid services can meet their demands.
C. They have no alternative platforms. D. Advanced AI functions help them make profits.
33. Which policy would Professor Huang favor?
A. Charging high fees to cover operating costs. B. Replacing free services with profitable ones.
C. Offering different options to different users. D. Providing advanced functions for free.
34. What is the universal challenge the AI industry faces?
A. How to balance users’ loyalty and profits.
B. How to upgrade their services with limited cost.
C. How to promote their new functions to casual users.
D. How to expand market share with innovations.
35. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A sci-fi novel. B. A travel magazine. C. A news report. D. A history textbook.

My first year of high school was rather awkward. Having graduated at the top of my junior high class, I found it tough to adapt to the new environment. The new school was much larger, and all my close friends had gone to other schools, leaving me lonely and depressed. I often missed my former teachers, who advised me to take part in school activities to make new friends and settle in gradually.
Just when things began to improve, tragedy hit my family on a cold windy afternoon. While I was doing homework with my pet cat beside me and my mother tending the fireplace, thick smoke poured down from the ceiling, and the roof quickly caught fire. We fled immediately. Worried about photos and letters left by my late father, my mother rushed back into the burning house twice to save precious belongings. She was pulled out by firefighters safely, suffering only from slight smoke inhalation (吸入).
After five hours of efforts, the fire was put out, but our house was totally destroyed. To my great sorrow, my beloved cat went missing. Devastated (击垮) by the heavy losses, I cried sadly. That night, we had to move to my grandparents’ house, with nothing but the clothes on our bodies and blankets offered by firefighters.
On the following Monday, I went to school in borrowed clothes and shoes. All my school supplies were burned up. Overwhelmed by embarrassment and grief, I felt totally insecure and withdrew from everyone. Before long, the whole school learned about my terrible experience.

M: I’ll be volunteering at the Community Fridge project.
W: Community Fridge? What’s that about?
M: It’s a local project. There’s a large fridge at the community center where we store the food. We collect leftover but still good food from nearby supermarkets and bakeries, and give it away for free. Many families can cut daily grocery costs with the free food. The goal is to reduce food waste and help those in need.
W: Sounds meaningful. Do volunteers need any professional training before taking part?
M: Not at all. I just sort donations and greet people — being friendly is what matters.
W: So it’s more about community connection than just handing out food.
M: Exactly. A lot of people don’t just come for the food — they come for the conversation. For me, that’s what really matters.

C. By using AI and cameras to locate weeds.
17. What environmental benefit does the ARA bring?
A. The use of all organic chemicals.
B. Cutting pesticide use by 95 percent.
C. Reducing expenses on farm machines.
A 15. C 16. C 17. B
W: Today with me is Steve Tanner, co-founder and technical expert of Ecorobotix, a Swiss agricultural technology company. Steve, thank you for joining us.
M: Thank you for having me.
W: So, what first got you interested in smart farming?
M: Well, I grew up on a farm in rural Switzerland. As a young man, I often helped my parents weed fields by hand. But that’s not what inspired me. What really got me thinking was seeing how traditional farming spread chemicals across entire fields — covering bare soil and healthy crops along with the weeds. The environmental damage was the real motivation.
W: So you didn’t start the company alone?
M: No. I met Aurélien Demaurex at an environmental conservation gathering. He studied management and had years of experience in finance. But he shared the same environmental concerns. So in 2014, we co-founded Ecorobotix.
W: And now you have the device named ARA. How does it actually work?
M: The ARA is equipped with six advanced cameras that scan the ground in real time. Our special AI system analyzes every part to distinguish crops from weeds. When a weed is spotted, the system turns on its weeding equipment to kill the exact plant.
W: That’s remarkable. And what about the environmental impact?
M: It’s huge. This practice reduces pesticide use by up to 95 percent compared to the traditional method. That means fewer chemicals in the soil and groundwater, healthier ecosystems, and lower costs for farmers.

18. When was dian cha listed as an intangible cultural heritage?
A. In 2019. B. In 2018. C. In 2006.
19. What helps Han Zheming in reviving dian cha?

20. What is Han Zheming’s main goal of promoting dian cha?
A. To make tea drinking more enjoyable.
B. To attract followers on social media.
C. To develop new tastes of traditional tea.
A 19. B 20. A
Welcome back to Cultural China. Today, let’s look at an old Chinese tea art — dian cha. Dian cha started in the Song Dynasty. Its process is simple but delicate. First, pour hot water onto powdered tea and mix it into a paste. Then add more hot water and stir it quickly by hand with a bamboo tool until foam appears. In 2019, dian cha was listed as an intangible cultural heritage in Runzhou District, Zhenjiang City, Jiangsu Province. A Shanghai designer named Han Zheming is trying to bring this art back. He says the foam is like paper, and the tea paste is like ink. But drawing is hard because the foam is soft. Han says it takes about one year of practice to do it well. After he graduated from the China Academy of Art in Zhejiang Province in 2006, Han applied what he had learned in college to reviving the art form. To spread dian cha culture, Han shares his tea art on Bilibili and Douyin, and now has over 20,000 followers. His goal is not to change the taste of tea, but to make tea drinking more fun and beautiful.

B
C 25. D 26. B 27. A
根据第二段“I never felt it when comparing myself to peers, but standing with my dad, I finally understood. I was comparing myself to an imagined father — one who could have seized every opportunity here.(我从未在与同龄人比较时感到过这种感觉,但站在父亲身边时,我终于明白了。我是在和一个虚构的父亲做比较——一个本可以抓住这里每一个机会的人)”可知,当作者将自己的情况与想象中的父亲相比较时,体验到“冒名者综合征”。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“My dad grew up in Guatemala. His mother died when he was eight, and his father was in the US. He raised eight siblings (手足), worked hard, and earned an engineering scholarship.(我父亲在危地马拉长大。他八岁时母亲去世,父亲则在美国生活。他养育了八个兄弟姐妹,勤奋工作,并获得了工程领域的奖学金)”可知,作者的父亲在成长过程中表现出坚强和责任感。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Underneath that sunset, I felt exactly like the satyr standing next to Hyperion. Even with orange rays landing on my skin, I felt small next to him.(在那落日之下,我感觉自己就像站在太阳神亥伯龙身边的萨堤罗斯。尽管橙色的光洒在我的皮肤上,但与他相比,我仍显得渺小)”可知,作者在第4段引用《哈姆雷特》中的这句诗以表明他与父亲之间巨大的鸿沟。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“So excellent a king he is, my dad. I will be excellent in my own way.(我爸爸,他是个多么出色的国王啊。我会用自己的方式变得出色)”以及全文的内,文章主要说明了作者在斯坦福面对父亲,因和想象中的父亲对比产生冒名者综合征,感悟父亲的不易伟大,不必复刻父亲的人生,要以属于自己的方式活出优秀,所以,A选项“我的国王,我的道路”可以概括文章主题,适合作为文章标题。
C
A 29. B 30. D 31. A
根据第二段“The findings, published in Appetite, suggest that disliked music triggers a form of compensatory (补偿的) eating — a psychological mechanism where the brain seeks high-reward comfort foods to reduce negative emotions.(发表在《食欲》上的研究结果表明,不喜欢的音乐会引发一种补偿性进食形式——这是一种心理机制,即大脑通过寻求高回报的安慰食物来减轻负面情绪)”可知,人们听到不悦的音乐后更喜欢吃甜食,因为甜食有助于缓解不良情绪。
根据第三段“The research team, led by Jonas Potthoff and Anne Schienle, divided 106 participants into three groups: one listened to self-selected liked music, another listened to disliked music, and a third experienced silence. Before and after the listening session, participants rated their general desire to eat and their emotional state. They were then presented with a buffet table displaying three high-sugar items, three low-sugar options, and three non-food objects.(由约纳斯·波特霍夫和安妮·施恩勒领导的研究团队将106名参与者分为三组:一组听自己选择的喜欢的音乐,另一组听不喜欢的音乐,第三组则体验静默。在聆听前和聆听后,参与者分别评估了自己对进食的一般欲望以及情绪状态。随后,他们被展示了一张自助餐桌,上面摆放着三种高糖食品、三种低糖选项以及三种非食物物品)”可知,研究人员通过比较不同组别受试者的食物选择开展这项研究。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“Because the unpleasant music undermined their emotional state, their brains in turn reached for comfort food rich in sugar as a coping mechanism — a classic example of emotional eating.(由于令人不快的音乐undermined了他们的情绪状态,他们的大脑转而选择富含糖分的安慰食物作为应对机制——这正是情绪性进食的经典例子)”可知,不悦的音乐使情绪变差、恶化,从而导致情绪化进食。
根据最后一段“While liked music may encourage healthier choices, disliked music increases the tendency to choose high-sugar foods even when the general appetite is depressed.(虽然喜欢的音乐可能促进更健康的饮食选择,但不喜欢的音乐会增加人们即使整体食欲下降时仍选择高糖食物的倾向)”可知,令人愉悦的音乐可能有助于人们选择更健康的食物。

Packing for a vacation involves a lot of preparations. You double-check your flight times, confirm the hotel reservations, and make sure you have packed enough sunscreen. ____36____. When you are traveling, it is incredibly easy to burn through your cellular balance. Here are some effective ways to stretch your mobile balance while traveling.
● ____37____
The absolute easiest way to stretch your mobile balance is to stop relying on cellular towers whenever possible. Most hotels, airports and coffee shops offer free Wi-Fi. You should treat these hotspots as your primary sources while you are away from home. Just remember to be smart about public networks.
● Download your essentials before you leave
Navigation apps are essential when exploring an unfamiliar city, but keeping a live GPS map running for a long trip will absolutely consume your cellular data. ____38____. Therefore, while you are at home, download the offline map for your destination and shows you want to watch directly.
● Shut down background data consumers
You might think you are conserving your battery simply by keeping your phone in the pocket, but your device is likely working behind your back. Your photo gallery might be automatically backing up your pictures to the cloud. Your social media apps might be updating your feed (推送). So before heading to the airport, set updates and cloud backups to Wi-Fi only. ____39____.
● Use airplane mode strategically
Airplane mode is not just for flying. ____40____. If you just want to use your phone as a camera, flip it into airplane mode. You can still turn your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on in airplane mode. This trick allows you to connect to a cafe network or listen to your wireless earbuds without accidentally turning your cellular data back on.
A. Let Wi-Fi do the heavy lifting
B. Access public networks with caution
C. It is a requirement for all the passengers on board
D. Besides, turn off background app refresh completely
E. It is actually a fantastic tool for managing your cellular balance
F. The same goes for streaming music or movies during a long ride
G. But one detail that often gets overlooked is your mobile connection
G 37. A 38. F 39. D 40. E
上文“Packing for a vacation involves a lot of preparations. You double-check your flight times, confirm the hotel reservations, and make sure you have packed enough sunscreen. (为度假收拾行李需要大量准备工作。你仔细核对航班时间,确认酒店预订,确保带够了防晒霜。)”列举了度假前的各种准备,下文“When you are traveling, it is incredibly easy to burn through your cellular balance. (当你旅行时,很容易就会耗尽你的手机流量。)”指出旅行中流量容易被消耗,G项“But one detail that often gets overlooked is your mobile connection(但有一个常常被忽视的细节就是你的手机网络连接)”中“But”表示转折,“one detail that often gets overlooked”与上文列举的详细准备形成对比,“your mobile connection”引出下文关于流量的话题。
下文“The absolute easiest way to stretch your mobile balance is to stop relying on cellular towers whenever possible. Most hotels, airports and coffee shops offer free Wi-Fi. You should treat these hotspots as your primary sources while you are away from home. (最简单的节省流量的方法是尽可能不依手机信号塔。大多数酒店、机场和咖啡店都提供免费Wi-Fi。你在外时应该把这些热点当作主要来源。)”强调利用Wi-Fi来节省流量,A项“Let Wi-Fi do the heavy lifting (让Wi-Fi来承担主要任务)”概括了本段核心。
上文“Navigation apps are essential when exploring an unfamiliar city, but keeping a live GPS map running for a long trip will absolutely consume your cellular data. (导航应用在探索陌生城市时必不可少,但长时间运行实时GPS地图肯定会消耗你的手机流量。)”说明GPS地图会消耗流量,下文“Therefore, while you are at home, download the offline map for your destination and shows you want to watch directly. (因此,当你在家时,下载目的地的离线地图和你想直接观看的节目。)”说明要提前下载离线内容,F项“The same goes for streaming music or movies during a long ride (长途旅行中在线听音乐或看电影也是如此)”用“The same goes for”表示同样的道理,与上文形成类比,引出下文的下载建议。
上文“So before heading to the airport, set updates and cloud backups to Wi-Fi only. (所以在去机场之前,将更新和云备份设置为仅限Wi-Fi。)”提到了一种节省流量的操作,D项“Besides, turn off background app refresh completely (此外,完全关闭后台应用刷新)”中“Besides”表示递进,进一步补充关闭后台数据的方法,符合本段“Shut down background data consumers (关闭后台数据消耗)”的主题。
【40题详解】
上文“Airplane mode is not just for flying. (飞行模式不仅仅用于飞行。)”否定了飞行模式的单一用途,下文“If you just want to use your phone as a camera, flip it into airplane mode. You can still turn your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth back on in airplane mode. (如果你只想用手机当相机,就切换到飞行模式。在飞行模式下你仍然可以打开Wi-Fi和蓝牙。)”具体说明飞行模式管理流量的用法,E项“It is actually a fantastic tool for managing your cellular balance (它实际上是管理手机流量的绝佳工具)”中“actually”与上文“not just”呼应,概括了飞行模式在流量管理中的作用。

However, I still felt upset about my missing cat.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I was sitting silently in my classroom, a group of classmates came up to me. Instead of surrounding me with sympathetic questions that might hurt my feelings, they greeted me with gentle, reassuring smiles. One of my classmates softly comforted me that hardship never lasted, and the whole class would stand by me. To help me get back on track, they generously shared their stationery, textbooks and notes they had carefully sorted out. Their consideration and kindness eased my sorrow and embarrassment, warming my lonely heart in the coldest days.
However, I still felt upset about my missing cat. Seeing my low spirits, my classmates offered to help look for it. After scanning every corner of the neighborhood together, we finally found my lost cat, scared but unharmed. When I held the little fluffy cat in my arms again, I was overcome with emotion and tears streamed down my face. Gradually, I stepped out of despair and loneliness, actively adapting to high school life. It was my new classmates’ selflessness and kindness that pulled me through the darkest time and made me feel at home in the new school.
