He returned my card with his comment “Good medicine tastes bitter, and good advice is harsh to the ear.” I held the card tightly, thinking about his words. Should I share with my father my study plans and university activities? Should I try to know about his world? With these thoughts filling my mind. I spotted my father waiting at the school gate. That day, I wandered home with my father, The setting sun shone on us, casting our shadows on the road. What do you call a seven-course meal in Australia? A pie and a sixpack. Or so the old joke goes. While the nation's standing in food circles continues to climb, the meat pie itself remains as uniquely Australian as ever. In 1927, guests attending the opening of the old Parliament House in Canberra dined on free meat pies. Sadly, organizers wrongly predicted visitor numbers for the event and were forced to send two trucks of pies to the nearby rubbish center. The 90-cent stamp issued as part of 1987's Aussie Kids series is about a couple of young people getting stuck into some meat pies at a football match. It's said that Australians eat somewhere between 270 million and 300 million meat pies every year. Like most of my countrymen, I eat lots of pies during the football season. While most of the pies eaten in Australia are produced in big factories, many bakers (面包师) all over the country choose to make their pies in-house. As convenient as a pie from the petrol station might be, it's at places like Brighton Bakery in Western Australia where the nation's pie-making people are best admired. But that's not to say all pies are created equal. If so, there'd be little need for competitions like the Great Aussie Pie Competition. First held in 1990 as part of the Sydney International Catering Trade Fair, this yearly competition tries to unearth the best pies around the country while improving the national standard at the same time. Although the guidelines are aimed at helping big bakers produce and sell the best possible pies, some of the advice will also be of use to home cooks, in particular: “check the underside of your product for dirty marks”. Also worth noting is that it's “important to get the balance right. Marks awarded for pastry-to-meat ratio (油酥面团与肉的比例)!” In addition, tomato sauce (酱) is also important. Do you put your sauce over your pie at the start or do you add the sauce bit by bit? Perhaps even more importantly, to store the sauce bottle cold in the fridge or to keep it at room temperature? But no matter how you sauce your pie, every meat pie comes with an unmistakable taste of Australia. 1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly deal with? A. What Australian-style meat pies were. B. Why meat pies were loved in Australia. C. How meat pies were served in Australia. D. How popular meat pies were in Australia. 2. What can meat pie competitions contribute to? A. The continued improvement of the guidelines. B. The improvement of the home baking level. C. The reduction in the price of meat pies.   D. The equality among meat pie makers. 3. What's the author's attitude toward saucing meat pies? A. The sauce should be put at the start. B. The sauce is the last thing to consider. C. The sauce should be kept at room temperature. D. The sauce is inseparable from Australian meat pies. 4. What's the purpose of the text? A. To introduce an Australian dish. B. To offer guidance on baking a meat pie. C. To admire some excellent Australian bakers. D. To explain the reasons for holding meat pie competitions. Everyone knows that fish is good for health.6.___ But it seems that many people don’t cook fish at home. I was angry about my father in the first year of college, because he didn’t care about my feelings at all. One day I had a serious quarrel with him. I was fed up with his direction and correction. How could he interfere with my life and my study plans? How could he understand the importance of my university activities? The only thing that he cared about was my academic performance! He didn’t understand my world and I didn’t understand his, either.   I stormed out and sighed all the way to school. Suddenly I realized that I didn’t have the assignment that was due: a thought card. This class was taught by Dr. Sidney B. Simon. The thought card was the admission ticket to his class. He would return them to us with his comment. My first thought card read, “All that glitters is not gold.” He commented, “What does this quote mean to you? Is it significant?” Obviously, he was taking it seriously. I surely didn’t want to reveal myself to him.  The week progressed. Dr. Simon’s class was quite brilliant. He challenged us to think and come up with our own responses. But I had no handling strategies to deal with it.  The second Tuesday came. I wrote on my card,“The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” The next day the card came back:“You seem to need a listener. Is this important to your life?” I couldn’t remember a teacher caring personally about me since primary school. With all these memories filling my mind, I raced to class. Just outside the door, I took a card and wrote, “I have the most terrible Dad of the world!” Then I dashed in. Looking up at me, he reached out for the card, and I took my seat. The moment I sat down, I felt terrible. I didn’t mean to let that out. That night I had difficulty sleeping. What if he contacted my dad? On Wednesday morning I came to class with mixed feelings. ____ I held the card tightly, thinking about his words. (casting... 第一段提示句后的衔接句(提示句:“On Wednesday morning I came to class with mixed feelings.”) (return sth. with sth.) ___ 5. 第二段提示句后的衔接句(提示句:“I held the card tightly, thinking about his words. ”) 我是否应该和我父亲分享我的学习计划和大学活动?(share with) 第二步 组语篇 On Wednesday morning I came to class with mixed feelings.________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I held the card tightly, thinking about his words. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 单元过关 (一)阅读理解 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 1 If you’re planning to go on a diet, or if you suffer from serious conditions like diabetes(糖尿病), knowing exactly what and how much you’re eating is essential. In this day and age, we have calorie and nutritional calculators even on our smart phones, but they act only as guides, while Panasonic’s revolutionary new device, CaloRieco, actually analyzes the food on your plate and provides accurate information about in just a few seconds. You’ve probably used calorie calculators before, and you know that they only offer general information. For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a burger, but it can’t tell you exactly how many calories are in the burger at your favourite fast food joint. The same goes for nutrients like protein, carbohydrates (碳水化合物) or fats. This is what makes the new Panasonic CaloRieco so special; it can actually give you accurate information on exactly what is on your plate. Once it’s done analyzing the various ingredients in your meal, CaloRieco displays the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to Panasonic, the device is able to recognize the vast majority of foods, except soups and very dark dishes. CaloRieco can also connect to your smart phone via an app,and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld, so you can access it whenever you need. Panasonic said that its invention is aimed at dieters and diabetes sufferers, both of which make up a sizable market.Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at CEATEC is just a prototype(样品). It’s scheduled to hit the market sometime in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery. 1.What can calorie calculators you once used tell you? A.General information. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress. On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness. Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavour can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries.Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavours that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes. We should embrace our heritage through our culture’s food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such. 5.What’s the function of food mentioned in the text? A.To help motivate homesickness. B.To show national identity. C.To reflect a country’s history. D.To show a community’s superiority. 6.What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.The specific traditional food. B.The national culture. C.A traditional expression of food. D.The old-fashioned taste. 7.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurants? A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes. B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil. C.To make the dishes popular among customers. D.To present their own food culture in a new way. 8.What’s the author’s attitude towards different food cultures? A.Negative. B.Balanced. C.Unfair. D.Unchangeable.
