There is a beautiful dirt track near my house that runs along a river for about 2km. On my finger was a very special ring: I’d only just picked it up from the jeweler’s the day before because I’d had it designed to hold a diamond given to me by my grandmother for my 21st birthday. I looked down at my ring as I began my walk, feeling as sunny as the day. Imagine my sadness when I looked again at the end of the track and saw a gaping hole in the setting where the diamond should have been. It was missing. Panicked, I started back along the path, looking frantically for the stone. In my heart, I knew how hopeless my search was. The track was long, stony and covered with leaves and debris (碎片). As I scanned the ground, crying and extremely worried, I met an elderly gentleman out for a walk. “What’s the matter, love?” he asked kindly. “Lost something?” I explained about the missing diamond and showed him the hole in my ring. He whistled. “That’s hard to find. Tell you what, love, I walk along this track every day, I’ll keep my eyes open for it.” I thanked him, expecting nothing, but told him my husband often walks our dogs along the path if he ever found something. A few days later, my husband met the gentleman on the path. “Guess what?” he said. “I found your diamond!” Unbelievably, he’d found the tiny stone and was delighted to hand the diamond back to my husband, saying casually. “Lucky I found it — I only have 50 percent vision in one eye.” When my husband offered him money for his trouble, he refused it. He could have easily kept the diamond, or sold it, as it’s worth several thousand dollars, but, thanks to this man, I’ll spend the rest of my days trying to do something equally significant for another person. And if I’m ever worried about the state of the human race, all I have to do is look at my ring and remind myself that there are still kind and generous souls out there. 1. The project, called Cargo Sous Terrain (CST), is intended to reduce the reliance on trucks for moving cargo. Global demand for freight (货物) transportation is growing, just as much of the world is seeing a shortage of truck drivers. Meanwhile, higher fuel prices have made road transportation more expensive, while transporting freight by road accounts for around 6% of global carbon dioxide emissions. If built, the network would stretch roughly 500 kilometers from Geneva in the west of Switzerland to St. Gallen in the northeast, and be completed around 2045. The network of tunnels will be 40 to 80 meters below ground and the autonomous pods will drive along three lanes at around 30 kilometers per hour. And the cargo will be loaded and unloaded at designated hubs (枢纽) employing lifts to take goods to and from the surface. The project was approved by the Swiss government in 2021. Although there’s a long way to go before construction can begin, earlier in 2023, CST began its preliminary work in the field—exploratory drilling along the Härkingen-Niederbipp route. The biggest challenge for CST will be the expense. CST estimates that it will cost around 30 billion Swiss Francs ($34 billion) for the entire network. The project will be entirely privately funded, with investors including Credit Suisse, Coop, and Siemens. Although a huge amount of funding still needs to be found, much of the technology for the automation and operation of the network already exists. Another key challenge is working out how to transport freight above ground from the tunnels to stores in cities—without adding to road traffic. Despite all the hurdles, Patrik Aellig, head of communication for CST, remains optimistic. CST is “at the forefront” of underground freight transport. 5. What mainly led to the project CST? A. Expensive truck drivers. B. Serious shortage of fuel. C. Environmental concern. D. Heavy freight transportation. 6. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3? A. To present the way the network will work. B. To provide a blueprint of the network. C. To prove the efficiency of the network. D. To show the advancement of the network. 7. What does the underlined word “preliminary” mean in paragraph 4? A. Innovative. B. Significant. C. Preparatory. D. Constructive. 8. What is a great challenge for CST? A. Absence of funds. B. Lack of technology. C. Last-mile delivery. D. Transport safety. 二 语篇结构 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 【2020·四川绵阳·高三期末】 When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. That is not all the truth. 9 An act of kindness can bring a smile to a person’s face even if only for a moment. ● Give away your money. 10 For example, if you want to help hungry children, you can try to find an international organization that provides food for those in poor areas. Aubrey and her husband Alex rushed out of the home and into their car, escaping with their 10-month-old daughter as well as their 6-year-old twin daughters. They didn’t take any necessities. In fact, they had never thought the wildfires would ever get to where they lived. After all, they were very far away. While Aubrey and her family eventually made it to safety, a relative’s home, they later learned their own home had been burned to the ground. They were left with no possessions, so Alex had to go to the neighborhood surrounding his relative’s home searching for supplies for his baby daughter Blue. He went door-to-door, asking if anyone had a baby and if there was a bottle or a diaper (尿布) and some extra milk. One neighbor just had a baby so he gave Alex two bottles. And some neighbors gave Alex two diapers and some gave her three. Alex later said. “They were holding onto their own diapers too, which I understand.” The disaster turned into a crisis for countless parents like Aubrey and Alex, who had to escape quickly and now needed basic supplies to keep their children alive and safe. The wildfires claimed the lives of over 100 people, while many more remained missing. Officials on Maui warned that their supplies were running out. Aubrey and Alex decided to travel to another island, Oahu, where they could stay in the home of Alex’s brother’s. There, they had more access to supplies like diapers and milk. Then they managed to contact volunteers and left in a lifeboat for Oahu.
