opinion / idea + argument (supporting ideas / reasons)

常用逻辑标记:while /although(引出对立观点);however(转向作者观点)。
Nowadays, there exists a common view that +【大众 / 旧观点】. However, the author argues that +【作者核心论点】. He points out that +【简要的核心理由,不用举例】, rather than the widelyheld belief.
Some people hold that +【一方观点】, while others argue that +【另一方观点】. From the author’s perspective, +【作者折中 / 辩证立场】.
Nowadays, there is a widespread belief that… A prevailing idea holds that… Public opinions are divided over the issue of…
Some people maintain that…, while others are convinced that… Contrary to the popular belief, some argue that…
However, the author holds a different view that… Nevertheless, the author argues against this opinion, claiming that… From the author’s standpoint,…
He concludes that… His main argument is that…

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Silent Corridor Debate
At a secondary school in London, a new rule requires students to remain silent in the corridors between classes, aiming to create a quieter, more disciplined environment. The school believes that minimizing noise during transition times helps students maintain focus and encourages a sense of order, ultimately leading to better academic performance. However, this rule has received mixed reactions.
Supporters of the rule argue that silence in the corridors can significantly reduce distractions. Noise from talking students can carry into classrooms, particularly in open-plan layouts, disturbing those who are already focused on their work. By enforcing quiet corridors, the school hopes to promote an environment where students can stay calm and focused throughout the day. Moreover, proponents argue that this policy teaches students valuable skills such as self-discipline and respect for rules, which are beneficial not only in school but also in their future professional and personal lives.
On the other hand, critics believe that banning students from talking in the corridors is overly restrictive and can have negative effects on their social development. They argue that school is not just a place for academic learning but also an environment where students develop social skills. Brief conversations in the corridors offer students a chance to connect with their peers, share ideas, and even seek help with subjects they find challenging. Critics worry that rigid silence policies make schools feel too controlled, potentially dampening students’ enthusiasm and turning the learning environment into something that feels more like a prison than a place of growth and discovery.
This debate raises a larger question about discipline in schools: should they enforce strict rules for silence to improve focus, or allow some social interaction, even if it means more noise? Finding the right balance is challenging. In the end, each school may decide based on its goals and values, weighing the benefits of quiet focus against the importance of social connections and student well- being.

Enjoy Small Treats without Guilt
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to feel guilty about taking time for ourselves. Whether it's treating ourselves to a sweet treat, watching an episode of our favorite TV show, or buying something we don't really need, we often associate these “guilty pleasures” with negative feelings. But what if we stopped feeling guilty? What if we enjoyed these small treats as part of our self- care routine?
Life is all about balance. We work hard and manage responsibilities but we sometimes forget to take care of our mental well-being. Small pleasures, when done mindfully, can actually contribute to a healthier and more balanced life. They provide us with a chance to relax, recharge, and enjoy life's little moments.
There's a difference between self-care and overdoing it. Self-care is about doing things that restore us; while going too far can lead to negative consequences. The key is moderation. For example, treating yourself to a chocolate bar after a long week isn't a problem — it's a form of self-care, a small act of kindness to yourself. But if we do this every day and it gets out of hand. then it might lead to guilt or other issues.
Guilt is a major barrier to enjoying small treats. We often feel as though we don't deserve a treat, or that we should always be working toward something bigger. But taking time to enjoy life is not a luxury—it's necessary. Accepting guilty pleasures without guilt can actually improve our productivity and mental health. A relaxed and happy mind is far more effective than one filled with stress.
So next time you feel tempted to treat yourself, remember that it's okay. Life is too short not to enjoy the little things—— so go ahead and embrace your guilty pleasures. You deserve it!

Classics on Modern Stages
Four centuries after his death, Shakespeare still appears in unexpected places — not only on traditional stages but in films, schools, and experimental theaters. Some directors now place Hamlet in corporate boardrooms or set Romeo and Juliet in modern cities. Ambition, jealousy and young love translate easily across centuries, and audiences unfamiliar with Elizabethan history may find the stories more approachable in familiar settings. Yet as Shakespeare’s works are increasingly reimagined, a central question emerges: how much adaptation is too much before the original spirit is lost?
Director Emma Rice has suggested that modern adaptations make timeless themes more accessible to contemporary audiences. When the stories appear in familiar settings, students encountering the plays for the first time often find the ideas easier to grasp and the characters easier to relate to. She has also observed that updating the setting can reveal how little human emotion has changed over time. A prince hesitating before revenge (报复) or two young lovers challenging social boundaries still reflect experiences that audiences today readily recognize.
Yet the enthusiasm for modernization occasionally raises uneasy questions. Critic Michael Billington has voiced concerns that when directors prioritize visual novelty over linguistic integrity, the plays lose the very elements that give them enduring power. Shakespeare’s language — the rhythm of blank verse, the complex imagery, the slow unfolding of thought within a speech — carries the emotional depth of his drama. When those elements are cut, the psychological complexity of the characters decreases.
The ongoing experiments on stage suggest that the relationship between classic works and modern audiences should never be taken as settled. To keep Shakespeare’s plays alive, each generation ought to reshape them thoughtfully, while always considering how much change the original spirit can bear.

Do Weird (古怪的) People Make Better Artists?
In one published experiment (there was a whole series of them), the participants were shown one of two pictures of an imaginary artist called Stefansson. One was an ordinary-looking male in his twenties, while the other was a man of the same age who “had long hair” and “had not shaved for several days”
The results were interesting: The people who were shown the untidy Stefansson liked his wild unconventional art more than those who were shown the clean-shaven, suit-wearing Stefansson. The researchers say this preference is due to our desire for “sincerity” in an artist. What they mean by sincerity is that an artist’s style and appearance should go together.
It sounds like a noble idea, but in fact, a huge body of great art, literature, and music was created by artists who did not look weird. Are we supposed to label these works boring and insincere? If so, we would miss an awful lot of classic works, like Bach’s musical compositions and Shakespeare’s poems.
We are too much in love with the unconventional forms of art and the unconventional types that produce them. It is a strange sort of blindness to the fact that a lot of good art has been produced by people who were models of conventionality. Wesley Kant, a leading figure of abstract art, and Eric Cooper, pioneer of musical modernism, both dressed like bankers Larry White, one of the founders of literary modernism, set out to look perfectly colorless in his suit and hat, just so he could fade into the background. It is the gap between their boring appearance and their wild inner world that makes these creators so attractive.
So as we explore the vast landscape of artistic expression, let us not be blinded by the charm of the weird.

Be Careful with an “I Don’t Care” Attitude
In today’s world, the “I don’t care” attitude is becoming increasingly popular. Phrases like “I don’t care what anybody thinks” are often used to express freedom and relief. While this attitude can be liberating, it also comes with potential risks. Understanding when to adopt this mindset can make a great difference.
The “I don’t care” attitude can be quite beneficial when it motivates us to persevere, especially when others have given up. Lei Jun, for instance, faced multiple skepticism when founding Xiaomi, but he kept searching for a new approach in the smartphone market without worrying about criticism. It was his perseverance in producing cost-effective phones that enabled him to win favor with massive users. As you can see in Lei’s example, ignoring external doubts can actually help us stay focused on our own goals.
However, the “I don’t care” mindset can also have negative consequences if it stems from stubbornness or blame-shifting. Many relationships suffer because one person becomes indifferent to the feelings of others, focusing solely on their own desires and ignoring how interconnected people’s needs are. At times, refusing to care serves as a defense mechanism to avoid responsibility, which can lead to a disaster. In the case of the 2008 financial crisis, many financial institutions claimed that the risky lending and mortgage practices were none of their business, which eventually led to massive layoffs and bankruptcies.
It’s crucial to reflect on why we adopt the “I don’t care” attitude. Are we motivated by confidence in our decisions, or are we simply avoiding challenges? Ultimately, the key is balance. There are times when it’s crucial to care deeply about others, the truth, and personal growth. At other times, it’s equally important to remain indifferent to negativity, distractions, or unnecessary pressures. By carefully choosing when to embrace the “I don’t care” attitude, we can lead more fulfilling lives.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Be cautious about the “I don’t care” attitude. While it can motivate perseverance by helping us stay focused on our goals despite external challenges, it also has two downsides — stubbornness and a tendency to shift blame. Indifference can damage relationships, and avoiding responsibility can lead to serious consequences. Therefore, strive for balance — care about the positive and ignore the negative. (60 words)
①The “I don’t care” attitude is popular, which brings liberation but also potential risks, and choosing the right time to adopt it is vital.
②It can inspire perseverance and help people focus on goals, as proven by Lei Jun's experience of founding Xiaomi despite skepticism.
③The attitude has negative effects if it comes from stubbornness or blame-shifting.
④Indifference to others’ feelings harms relationships, and avoiding responsibility may cause severe results like the 2008 financial crisis.
⑤We need to reflect on the reasons for adopting this attitude, and balance is the key point.
⑥We should care about positive things and ignore negativity to live a more fulfilling life.
We need to strike a balance between caring and indifference, valuing what matters and brushing off meaningless negativity.
1】While it can motivate perseverance by helping us stay focused on our goals despite external challenges, it also has two downsides — stubbornness and a tendency to shift blame.

Digging deep
What you see depends on where you stand. The unarguable fact that most archaeologists live in the rich world means two things. One is that the fossils of these places are far better studied than those of poorer countries, which is a scientific pity. The other is that what knowledge has been acquired about poor-country archaeology is frequently the result of visits by rich-country archaeologists.
All this was well known, if not quantified, before Nussaibah Raja put numbers on it in a paper published in Nature Ecology and Evolution. Ms Raja, however, sees not just a regrettable history-induced bias that should certainly be addressed in future, but also a continuing pillage (劫掠) of poor countries by the scientific establishments of rich places more powerful than they.
Perhaps. But an alternative view is possible. This is that many of the world’s poor countries have higher priorities than studying their fossils, that letting foreign researchers do it for them is not wrong, provided no laws are broken, and that it is patronizing (高人一等的态度) to suggest otherwise. Moreover, as Ms Raja observes, several not-yet-properly rich places, notably Egypt, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and India, are indeed developing as archaeological powers in their own right. And, as she further points out, Egyptian archaeologists are starting to take an interest in Myanmar’s fossiliferous amber beds that one might see as predatory (掠夺性的) as that of any Western fossil hunter.
Ms Raja rightly notes that rich-country scientists could do more to assist their poor-world hosts, especially by recruiting local researchers onto their teams to transfer expertise — something they are currently bad at.

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Passage 1

Passage 2

Passage 3
By carefully choosing when to embrace the “I don’t care” attitude, we can lead more fulfilling lives.
