Since Francis Galton coined the phrase “nature vs nurture (环境因素)” 150 years ago, the debate about what makes us who we are has dominated the human sciences.
Today, however, a new scientific field is set to reshape the debate — not by declaring victory for one side or the other, nor even by calling a tie, but rather by revealing they were never in opposition in the first place. Through this new perspective, nature and nurture are not even entirely distinguishable, because genes and environment don’t operate in isolation; they influence each other and to a very real degree even create each other.
These scenes are the gold standard of play-based learning. I’m sure there are many preschool educators who would have felt forced, in the name of learning, to step in with corrections and clarifications, or worse. In a moment, we see the children turn away from one another, away from their own questions, explorations, assumptions, and conclusions based on dialogue and agreement. They are now relying on the adult for questions and answers, rather than continuing to engage in the highest pursuit of human intellectual effort.
44. According to the passage, what is a possible result of the stepping in of the preschool teachers?
A. A deeper understanding of facts and a more efficient learning process.
B. The successful integration of imagination-based games into formal curricula.
C. A shift from self-directed exploration to adult-dependent knowledge acquisition
D. The immediate correction of false concepts and elimination of misunderstandings.
Today the reproachful frowns are aimed at “buy now, pay later” (BNPL). This practice, which lets people pay for things they buy online in instalments, is booming: over $300bn in payments were financed in such a manner last year. Borrowers tend to be younger and less credit-worthy than average, which is causing concern. Many critics worry that the industry takes advantage of the young, while analysts worry that the hidden debt makes it hard to monitor credit risks. Yet BNPL could be a valuable innovation.
43. What is “the reproachful frowns” in paragraph 2 closest in meaning to?
A. New forms of credit. B. Disapproving reactions.
C. Signs of moral decline. D. Surprised expressions.
Another way to think of 21st-century Western culture is as a history of relative comfort. Chaos in the today’s world has shaken up the arts, but it has been less impactful than the crises that launched the cultural breakthroughs of the early 20th century. In extreme conditions, could today’s creators match the past genius? Let’s hope we will never find out.
45. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph imply?
A. The author thinks social chaos is necessary.
B. The author hopes extreme crises won’t happen.
C. The author believes modern artists are superior.
D. The author thinks cultural decline will continue.
Here is the part of this research that really blows me away. The research suggests that your partner’s genes influence your likelihood of depression almost a third as much as your own genes do. It also shows when a small number of students with a genetic tendency to smoke are present in a high school, smoking rates can rise rapidly across an entire grade — even among those students who didn’t personally know those classmates.
45. It can be inferred that the research shocked the writer by suggesting that ________.
A. our genes may change because of the people we live with
B. nature determines our behaviour just as much as nurture does
C. people with the same genes are more likely to interact with each other
D. the genes of people around us can affect the environment we experience
Some providers say they do not trust credit bureaus — agencies that collect, organize, and provide information about individuals’ credit histories — to understand this new form of finance; others may see the secrecy it offers as an advantage, because it attracts borrowers who wish to keep their debts hidden. Despite such concerns, providers should be required to report their data, as Affirm, one of America’s largest BNPL lenders, has recently begun to do. Many providers wish to reach further into mainstream finance, and to achieve those dreams, they must open up.
46. What is the author’s attitude towards BNPL?
A. It may harm the young, so regulators should ban it.
B. It is growing, and it is making online shopping easier.
C. It may be useful, but providers need to fully report data.
D. It is unfair, as it excludes less credit-worthy borrowers.
The social media landscape is now undergoing a quiet but profound transformation. The question arises: are platforms becoming less social just as they become more popular?
The traditional magic of online social networks was their ability to combine personal interactions with mass communication. Friends shared updates; networks spread them widely. Now this fusion is splitting apart. Status updates from people you know are being replaced by algorithm-selected videos from strangers — content that resembles television more than conversation. Meanwhile, public posting is moving to private messaging groups where conversations happen behind digital walls.
Some argue these defects can be fixed through better governance or coding. But the problems suggest something deeper: social media’s flaws may also result from trade-offs built into human communication itself. When platforms move toward private groups, monitoring decreases. When people escape closed circles, they may face more extreme content. As social networks evolve, we must deal with these new challenges rather than fighting old battles.
46. Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. The Rise of Private Messaging B. From Public Square to Private Chat
C. Why Algorithms Are Ruining Social Media D. The Future of Online Communities
The birth of the universe and the nature of space and time are every bit as much mysteries to physicists as treasure maps and pirates are to these preschoolers. What drives scientists is the same thing that drives playing children: they are motivated by the mystery, by their own questions, and by the freedom to seek answers. Too often, educators, in our commitment to facts, truth and teaching, take over the learning by providing shortcuts to answers, eliminating the mystery that has driven humans since the beginning of time. We forget that getting it wrong is every bit as important to this process as being right. The job in life is not to know stuff, but rather to figure stuff out so that we will then know. And we get there through play.
46. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?
A. How to Draw a Perfect Treasure Map
B. Play: The Highest Pursuit of Learning
C. Why Facts Matter Most in Preschools
D. Insight: The Myth of Games in Education

Sarcasm (讽刺) and jazz have something surprisingly in common: You know them when you hear them. Sarcasm is mostly understood through tone of voice, which is used to portray the opposite of the literal words. For example, when someone says, “Well, that’s exactly what I need right now,” their tone can tell you it’s not what they need at all.
What’s more, since actions strongly determine thoughts and feelings, when a person consistently acts sarcastically it may only serve to heighten their underlying hostility and insecurity. After all, when you come right down to it, sarcasm can be used as a subtle form of bullying—and most bullies are angry, insecure, or cowardly.
17.Why does the author say sarcasm and jazz have something surprisingly in common?
A.Both are recognized when heard.
B.Both have exactly the same tone.
C.Both mean the opposite of what they appear to.
D.Both have hidden in them an evident irritation.
18.What happens when a person consistently acts sarcastically?
A.They feel their dignity greatly heightened.
B.They feel increasingly insecure and hostile.
C.They endure hostility under the disguise of humor.
D.They taste bitterness even in pleasant interactions.

In the college-admissions wars, we parents are the true fighters. We’re pushing our kids to get good grades, take SAT preparatory courses and build resumes to they can get into the college of our first choice. I’ve twice been to the wars, and as I survey the battlefield, something different is happening. We see our kids’ college background as a prize demonstrating how well we’ve raised them. But we can’t acknowledge that our obsession is more about us than them. So we’ve come up with various justifications that turn out to be half-truths, prejudices or myths. It actually doesn’t matter much whether Aaron and Nicole go to Stanford.
5.Why does the author say that parents are the true fighters in the college-admissions wars?
A.They have the final say in which university their children are to attend.
B.They know best which universities are most suitable for their children.
C.They care more about which college their children go to than the children themselves.
D.They have to carry out intensive surveys of colleges before children make an application.

Surgical students are less capable than their ancestors because they spend too much time with screens and not enough with physical materials. These claims from Roger Kneebone, professor of surgical education at Imperial College London, were widely reported last week.
According to Kneebone, today’s students lack the dexterity that is important for sewing, cutting and stitching. He argues that this is because, instead of taking part in creative subjects that involve manual work during their school education, “a lot of things are reduced to swiping on a two-dimensional flat screen”.
13.What does the underlined word dexterity mean?
A.Power of concentration. B.Experience of performing surgery.
C.Capacity to use words or mind. D.Skills related to hand work.
………
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being used more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock of computers increasingly, problems appear.

JULY 19TH was a day for help- desk heroes. A routine software update by CrowdStrike, a cyber-security company, caused computer breakdown in offices, hospitals and airports worldwide. Most white-collar workers looked miserably at their screens and realised just how useless they are if they cannot log in. People in IT came to the rescue of helpless colleagues and stranded passengers. Their work that day was full of stress — but also full of meaning.
If machines can add purpose to some jobs when they fail, what about when they work properly? This is not a meaningless question. Technologies tend to spread in less dramatic ways, task by task rather than role by role. Before machines replace individuals, they change the nature of the work they do.
It is still too early to know how AI will affect the quality of work. Some will surely enjoy using a bot to brainstorm ideas and take care of boring tasks, while others may not. The thing for managers to remember is that machines can make employees feel differently about their work. So it matters whether new technologies are introduced in collaboration with employees or imposed from above, and whether they enhance or weaken their sense of competence.
15.We can infer from Barrett’s research that ______.
A.the introduction of robots leads to a decrease in job quality for all hospital staff
B.when robots are introduced, staff tend to feel more satisfied regardless of their roles
C.in the same department, workers in different positions can feel differently to automation
D.in some occupational areas, automation does constantly reduce the perceived meaningfulness
16.Which of the following studies will others in the last paragraph cite as their evidence?
A.A paper from Boris Nikolaev illustrates that many employees put a higher premium on non-monetary than monetary rewards.
B.Research by Pok Man Tang of the University of Georgia suggests that workers who interact more with AI assistants feel lonelier and long for more social contact.
C.A recent Federal Reserve discussion paper surveyed American workers who had switched jobs; they found that interest in the work mattered more to people than pay and benefits.
D.An experiment conducted by Eugina Leung states that a technology that cuts down on boring tasks is fine; one that threatens your sense of identity is not.

Well-meaning people might say you need closure, a way to tell a coherent (有条理的) story. Closure is great if you can get it, but I’m not convinced it’s essential. What concerns me is that trying to find narratively pleasing ways to transform painful memories ultimately makes our capacity to move on depend on whether we can make sense of those events. Coherence may be genuinely beyond our reach. Bad luck doesn’t make sense. People don’t always have a “why”. I think it’s less “I have to get closure” and more “I have to see this as past, over”.
As you try to figure out what is captivating about these memories, it might help to try seeing them in past tense. Not solved, just over — not a source of new pain, not part of a pattern; an echo of hurts gone by.
19.Which of the following best summarizes the author’s advice?
A.Painful memories must be carefully analyzed to gain wisdom.
B.Forgetting the past is the only way to achieve peace eternally.
C.Painful memories should be seen as finished events, not threats.
D.One could resolve painful memories by rewriting his own past.

As computers become more and more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes (笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
……..
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical value and artistic beauty. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to hand-write more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory (必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
24.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?
A.To Type or to Hand-write.
B.How to Improve Handwriting.
C.Practical Value and Artistic Beauty of Chinese Characters.
D.Writing by Computer Will Replace Writing by Hand.

“Woman reading book, under a night sky, dreamy atmosphere,” I type into Deep Dream Generator’s Text 2 Dream feature. In less than a minute, an image is returned to me showing what I’ve described.
Welcome to the world of AI image generation, where you can create what on the surface looks like top-rank artwork using just a few text prompts (提示). But closer examination shows oddities. The face of the woman in my image has very odd features, and appears to be holding multiple books. And, while there’s an initial thrill at seeing an image appear, there’s no creative satisfaction.
AI image generation could influence everything from film to graphic novels and more. Children’s illustrators were quick to raise concerns about the technology. They say AI-generated art is the exact opposite of what art is believed to be. Fundamentally, art is all about translating something that you feel internally into something that exists externally. Whatever form it takes, true art is about the creative process much more than it’s about the final piece. And simply pressing a button to generate an image is not a creative process.
Beyond creativity, there are deeper issues. To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others’ work. However, a human artist is also adding emotion and nuance (细微差别) into the mix. AI doesn’t do the same — it can only copy.
The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing (贬低) of the work of artists. There’s already a negative prejudice towards the creative industry. People will begin to think that their “work” is as excellent as that created by someone who has spent a career making art. It’s nonsense, of course. You can use your mobile phone to take a nice picture of your daughter, but you are no match for professionals.
7.What is Paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A.The styles of human artworks and AI ones.
B.Human artists’ influence on AI generators.
C.Different means used in human and AI art creation.
D.The drawbacks of drawing from existing art and text.
8.Which of the following best summarizes the last paragraph?
A.Art is the mirror of life. B.Rome is not built in a day.
C.No man can do two things at once. D.Don’t judge a book by its cover.

The pet food industry has received unkind remarks as to the true origin of its ingredients (原料) for decades. Now the industry faces another source of criticism as a new book starts a debate about the environmental impact of owning a well-fed pet.
The New Scientist magazine, in a recent editorial, largely agreed with the book’s findings that some pets, due to the food they eat, have a surprisingly high “ecological footprint”, which is a way of quantifying human demand on the planet’s ecosystems using a measure called “global hectares”.
According to the authors of the book, “A shocking comparison is that in 2004, the average citizen of some poor countries had an eco-footprint of 0.76 hectares. The eco-footprint of a cat is about 0.15 hectares, almost the same as what is needed to run a small car. In a world where resources are already limited, can people really justify keeping pets that require more than some people?”
The authors of the book say that they were “genuinely surprised” when calculating the environmental impact of pets. And some of the ideas they put forward to attenuate this are likely to shock some pet owners. For example, the book suggests catching pests such as field mice and processing them into a “natural” cat food, or raising pets like chickens that provide both company and fresh eggs. When feeding a pet, however, the advice is to favour pet foods made from chicken meat, which is less damaging to the environment than red meat and fish.
As you might expect, the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) puts up a spirited defence, arguing that the vast majority of meat and fish used in pet foods is of sufficient quality for human consumption but more than humans need. “If we didn’t recycle animal by-products to sell, they might instead be abandoned and buried under the earth, which is not very green,” says the director. In addition, he points out that pets should not be viewed just on their carbon footprint. “Our environment is greatly enriched by the part they play in our lives. Pets in the home inspire responsibility, encourage social awareness and have positive health benefits.”
20.What is suggested in the book to make pet food production greener?
A.Making processed pet foods out of pests
B.Feeding pets primarily with fish and meat.
C.Increasing the use of red meat in pet foods.
D.Avoiding using animal by-products in pet foods.
21.The word “attenuate” (para 4) is closest in meaning to “_______”.
A.assess B.blame C.drive D.reduce
22.Which argument does PFMA make to defend the industry?
A.The use of meat and fish in pet foods can prevent waste.
B.Pet food production is both sustainable and cost-efficient.
C.Pet food ingredients are as nutritious as those for humans.
D.The eco-footprints of humans far outnumber those of pets.
23.What is the main focus of the passage?
A.The origin of pet food ingredients.
B.Calculation of pet carbon footprint.
C.Environmental impact of pet foods.
D.A spirited debate over pet ownership.
Business innovation is an organization's process for introducing new ideas, workflows methodologies, services or products. Like IT innovation, which calls for using technology new ways to create a more efficient and agile organization, business innovation should enable the achievement of goals across the entire organization, with sights set on accomplishing core business aims and initiatives. Innovation often begins with idea generation , whereas ideas are narrowed down during brainstorming sessions, after which leaders consider the business viability, feasibility and desirability of each idea.existing products, services or processes; or it should solve a problem; or it should reach new customers. Recent examples of business innovation include the introduction of the Dyson vacuum cleaner, whose creator and namesake James Dyson declared in advertisements that he set out to build a better product by applying industrial cyclone technologies to the household appliance.
The purpose of the business innovation process is to create value for the organization. That value can come from creating new revenue opportunities or driving more revenue through existing channels: from creating efficiencies that save time, money or both; or from improvements to productivity or performance. In short, innovation should lead to higher profits Additionally, the results of an organization’s innovation process should yield a competitive advantage; it should help the organization to grow and reach-or, better still, exceed -strategic objectives.
Innovation and invention are closely linked, but the two terms are not interchangeable. An invention ts an entirely new creation. The process of business innovation can produce an invention, but the term is broader in scope and includes the application of an existing concept or practice in a new way.or applying new technology to an existing product or process to improve upon it. To better understand the difference, consider this: The telephone is an invention, but the smartphone is an innovation.
Business innovation can also be classified as either revolutionary or evolutionary. Revolutionary business innovation yields a drastic change in a product, service, process, etc. which often destroys or supplants an existing business model This is also known as radical innovation. Evolutionary or incremental innovation involves smaller, more continuous improvements that, while important, are not drastic enough to shift a company or market into a new paradigm. Disruptive innovation is a category that emphasizes the destructive aspect of revolutionary innovation: this term applies to business innovation that lends to the creation of a new market that displaces an existing one or. similarly, a significant upheaval in a category of products or services.
Business innovation, like most business initiatives, hits both benefits and risks. Organizations should recognize on the negative tide that the bushiness innovation process can be a costly undertaking than does not always produce a rectum on investment (ROI); that ideas considered likely to succeed could still fail; and that stakeholders could fight the changes required to be successful. On the other hand, organizations need to weigh those risks against the benefits of business innovation.
63. What does the underlined word in the first paragraph mean?
A. Persuasibility B. Scarcity C. Generality D. Practicability
64. What is the purpose of business innovation?
A. Create value benefits for the enterprise.
B. Reform the management structure of enterprises.
C.Encourage staff to make more inventions.
D. Upgrade the product performance.
65 Which of the following is true about innovation and invention?
A. They are essentially the same concept.
B. They can replace each other in the context.
C.They can bring huge commercial benefits.
D.They are closely related but have different conceptual scopes.
66. What is the main content of this passage?
A. The precautions for brainstorming meetings.
B. The considerations for business innovation.
C. The difference between innovation and invention.
D. The revolutionary change in business innovation.

There are constantly mixed voices from different media as to whether to stop the Olympics.
http://camilla.com.au/
The Olympic charter’s call for a “peaceful society” and “preservation of human dignity” is a very noble one, but its means are rather odd. Through fierce athletic competition between nations, the Olympic rivalries between athletes probably play very little role in their society anyway.
The Olympics is an arena for individual achievement; however, if someone is to win a race, others must lose. Emphasis is not placed on athletes improving their personal best but on who wins.
Having many nations come together shows worldwide solidarity (团结), nations united by their athletes in Lycra and branded shoes. The cultures of nations are shown by little more than flag waving and the appearance of their mascots (吉祥物).
The Guardian
The original spirit of the Olympics was supposedly that of sporting competition between amateurs, who competed for the honor of doing so, and to test themselves against the best sportspeople worldwide. However, the Olympics has become more commercialized. Money and rewards potentially available from excelling on the international stage have served to incentivize not only professionalization, but also cheating. The professed aspirations of the Olympic movement and the reality of the contemporary Olympics are now utterly opposed.
The New York Times
Citizens of the host city, often uninterested in the Olympic spectacle, can end up footing the bill by paying extra taxes. The construction of Olympic facilities, company investment and the regeneration of areas in host cities can be very disruptive, pricing local residents and shopkeepers out of their areas. Previous Olympics have shown that Olympic resources, when the games are over, do not always benefit the host city. The Olympic sites can become ghost towns, so characteristic of the year they were built in as to be aesthetically odd, impractical, inhospitable and unfashionable a decade later.
TIME
The athletes competing in the Olympic Games have worked for years, showing dedication to achieving physical greatness. They keep to a strict diet, and put in hundreds of hours training in a week, all for the honor of competing against the best athletes in the world. Besides, individual performance stands here for celebration of collective values, including that of fair competition. Those caught cheating are dealt with harshly, which teaches honesty and dedication to one’s dreams.
Above all, countless times the games have instilled hope and togetherness in many. In a world of growing hostility, it’s encouraging to see a sense of peace and togetherness gather every four years.
1.As far as the Olympics are concerned, the website camilla.com.au probably holds that ________.
A.emphasizing the result of games motivates athletes to pursue their personal best
B.competition between athletes may not make much difference to the whole society
C.fierce and odd athletic competition fails to achieve the aim of the Olympic charter
D.having various nations come together display togetherness as well as their culture
2.Which of the following problems with the Olympics is NOT mentioned by The Guardian and The New York Times?
A.The Olympic sites built in the host city may fall into disuse after the games are over.
B.The rewards for winning the game may cause more athletes to train professionally.
C.The aspiration to show personal best leads some athletes to win by dishonest means.
D.The Olympic Games fail to live up to their original spirit due to over commercialization.
3.According to TIME, the greatest significance of holding the Olympics lies in the fact that ________.
A.the Olympics inspire different countries to search for the common ground
B.the Olympics instill such virtues as devotion, honesty and fairness in athletes
C.the Olympics help to demonstrate the athletes’ persistent struggle for excellence
D.the Olympics offer an arena where the Olympic spirit is tested on a global scale
It started during yoga class. She felt a strange pull on her neck, a sensation completely foreign to her. Her friend suggested she rush to the emergency room. It turned out that she was having a heart attack.
She didn’t look like someone of a heart attack. She exercised, did not smoke, watched her plate. But on reviewing her medical history, I found that her cholesterol (胆固醇) level was sky high. She had been prescribed a cholesterol-lowering statin (他汀) medication, but she never picked up the prescription because of the scary things she had read about statins on the internet. She was the victim of fake medical news.
While misinformation has been the object of great attention in politics, medical misinformation might have an even greater body count. As is true with fake news in general, medical lies tend to spread further than truths on the internet — and they have very real impacts.
False medical information can also lead to patients experiencing greater side effects through the “nocebo effect”. Sometimes patients benefit from certain treatment or medication simply because they believe they will. The nocebo effect is the opposite: Patients can experience negative effects just because they expect them. This is very true of statins. In blinded trials, patients who get statins are no more likely to report feeling muscle aches than patients who get a placebo (安慰剂). Yet, in clinical practice, according to one study, almost a fifth of patients taking statins report side effects, leading many to discontinue the drugs.
Silicon Valley needs to own this problem. When human health is at risk, perhaps search engines, social media platforms and websites should be held responsible for promoting or hosting fake information. The scientific community needs to do its part to educate the public about key concepts in research, such as the difference between observational studies and higher-quality randomized trials
Finally, journalists can do a better job of spreading accurate information. News sites are more likely to cover catchy observational studies than randomized controlled trials, perhaps because the latter are less likely to produce surprising results. Such coverage can overstate benefits, claiming for example, that statins could cure cancer; it can also unduly emphasize potential risks, such as suggesting a misleading connection with dementia (痴呆).
4.The lady’s experience of a heart attack is mentioned in paragraph 1 and 2 in order to .
A.introduce the topic B.warn against a disease
C.explain an established theory D.highlight the writer’s opinion
5.Which of the following examples best illustrates the “nocebo effect”?
A.You feel better after taking the medicine that you think will work.
B.You feel dizzy after taking the medicine that you believe has side effects.
C.You have a fever after taking the medicine even if you know it is harmless.
D.You have a headache after taking the medicine even if the doctor says it’s safe.
6.According to the writer, what should journalists do?
A.Use as few social media platforms as possible. B.Educate the public about key medical ideas.
C.Report as complete a story as possible. D.Spread more benefits than risks.
7.Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Doctor Internet is a Liar B.Why “Nocebo Effect” Works
C.Watch out for Partial Coverage D.Stand up for Better Human Health
I used to spend a lot of time worrying about how other people judged me. Did I say too much? Too little? Was I too intense, or not fun enough? These thoughts often distracted me, especially in meetings or social events. I had a whole inner self-talk going on in my head. Every facial expression and comment from others seemed full of hidden meaning. I would polish these “truths” about myself like shiny little stones and carry them around. It was exhausting.
But research shows that most people are not really thinking about us. In fact, studies have found that about 78% of conversations are people talking about themselves. The main function of conversation, researchers said, is to let the speakers share information about who they are.
Later studies confirmed this pattern. Psychologists found that we use our own experiences as an anchor when judging others. For example, if crowds make you uncomfortable, you might assume someone else disliked a big party — when in fact, they may have loved it. Brain imaging has also shown that the “default network” of our brain lights up when we are at rest, and it is the same area that activates when we think about ourselves. In other words, our mind’s natural state is self-focus.
So when I worry that people think I’m too intense, who is really thinking that? Me. The truth is, we have no idea what others are actually thinking, and we never will. Most likely, they are busy wondering what others think about them. I’m just a blip on the radar of their thoughts.
This doesn’t mean people will never judge or say harsh things. But often, their judgments aren’t truly about us. People are frequently the most critical of qualities in others that they feel insecure about in themselves.
The freedom comes when we stop internalizing others’ words and start asking, “What does this reveal about them?” Realizing that most people’s thoughts center on themselves is incredibly liberating.
8.What was the writer mainly concerned about in the beginning?
A.Why social events were often exhausting.
B.Why people were speaking to themselves.
C.How his words and behaviour were perceived.
D.How well people remembered his achievements.
9.What do later studies suggest about people’s judgement of others?
A.They pay attention to others’ feedback.
B.They rely mainly on logic and evidence.
C.They often draw on personal experience.
D.They enjoy guessing others’ likes and dislikes.
10.What does the phrase “a blip” (paragraph 4) most probably mean?
A.Something small and unimportant.
B.A major event that is well recorded.
C.Something that attracts most people.
D.A common topic people like to discuss.
11.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.The Danger of Self-Focused Thinking
B.No One Is Really Thinking About You
C.Finding Freedom from Constant Self-Judgment
D.Why We Worry Too Much About Others’ Opinions

Since Francis Galton coined the phrase “nature vs nurture (环境因素)” 150 years ago, the debate about what makes us who we are has dominated the human sciences.
Today, however, a new scientific field is set to reshape the debate — not by declaring victory for one side or the other, nor even by calling a tie, but rather by revealing they were never in opposition in the first place. Through this new perspective, nature and nurture are not even entirely distinguishable, because genes and environment don’t operate in isolation; they influence each other and to a very real degree even create each other.
根据第一段中“Since Francis Galton coined the phrase “nature vs nurture (环境因素)” 150 years ago, the debate about what makes us who we are has dominated the human sciences.(自150年前弗朗西斯·高尔顿提出“先天与环境因素”这一说法以来,关于什么塑造了我们的争论便一直主导着人文科学领域)”、第二段中“Today, however, a new scientific field is set to reshape the debate — not by declaring victory for one side or the other, nor even by calling a tie, but rather by revealing they were never in opposition in the first place.(然而,如今一个新的科学领域即将重塑这场争论——它不是通过宣布某一方获胜,甚至也不是宣告平局,而是揭示出它们从一开始就并非对立)”和第三段中“The new field is called sociogenomics, an integration of behavioral science and genetics.(这个新领域被称为社会基因组学,是行为科学与遗传学的交叉融合)”可知,在社会基因组学出现之前,人们普遍认为先天和环境因素是对立的,即基因和环境是分开作用的。故选A项。
定位第二段 “Borrowers tend to be younger and less creditworthy than average…hidden debt makes it hard to monitor credit risks”。
根据第四段中的“I’m sure there are many preschool educators who would have felt forced, in the name of learning, to step in with corrections and clarifications, or worse. In a moment, we see the children turn away from one another, away from their own questions, explorations, assumptions, and conclusions based on dialogue and agreement. They are now relying on the adult for questions and answers, rather than continuing to engage in the highest pursuit of human intellectual effort.(我敢肯定,有很多学前教育工作者会感到被迫,以学习的名义,介入纠正和澄清,或者更糟。
根据第一段“New forms of credit are often met with doubts. A century ago, furniture and car sellers realized they could reach more customers if they accepted payments in instalments To critics this was a sign of moral decline. When in 1958 Bank of America started posting credit cards to customers, it did not take
long for opponents to worry about the consequences.(新型信贷模式往往总会遭遇质疑。 和第二段中“Today the reproachful frowns are aimed at “buy now, pay later” (BNPL).(如今,(人们)the reproachful frowns投向了“先买后付”(BNPL)这种模式。)”
在最后一段“Another way to think of 21st-century Western culture is as a history of relative comfort.Chaos in the today’s world has shaken up the arts, but it has been less impactful than the crises that launched the cultural breakthroughs of the early 20th century. In extreme conditions, could today’s creators match the past genius? Let’s hope we will never find out.(看待21世纪西方文化的另一种方式是将其视为一段相对安逸的历史。
根据第五段中“Here is the part of this research that really blows me away. The research suggests that your partner’s genes influence your likelihood of depression almost a third as much as your own genes do. It also shows when a small number of students with a genetic tendency to smoke are present in a high school, smoking rates can rise rapidly across an entire grade
根据最后一段中“Despite such concerns, providers should be required to report their data, as Affirm, one of America’s largest BNPL lenders, has recently begun to do.(尽管存在这些担忧,但应该要求供应商报告他们的数据,就像美国最大的BNPL贷款机构之一Affirm最近开始做的那样。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“The social media landscape is now undergoing a quiet but profound transformation. The question arises: are platforms becoming less social just as they become more popular?(社交媒体格局正在经历一场悄然而深刻的变革。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“What drives scientists is the same thing that drives playing children: they are motivated by the mystery, by their own questions, and by the freedom to seek answers. And we get there through play.(驱动科学家的动力与驱动玩耍儿童的动力是一样的:他们被神秘感、自身的问题以及寻求答案的自由所激励。

【答案】17.A 18.B
根据文章第一段内容“Sarcasm and jazz have something surprisingly in common: You know them when you hear them.(讽刺和爵士乐之间竟有着惊人的相似之处:当你听到它们的时候,就能立刻辨别出来。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第五段内容“What’s more, since actions strongly determine thoughts and feelings, when a person consistently acts sarcastically it may only serve to heighten their underlying hostility and insecurity.(此外,由于行为会极大地影响思想和情感,如果一个人总是以讽刺的方式行事,这可能只会加剧他们内心深处的敌意和不安感。)”

根据文章第一段“In the college-admissions wars, we parents are the true fighters. We’re pushing our kids to get good grades, take SAT preparatory courses and build resumes to they can get into the college of our first choice.(在大学录取这场战役中,我们家长才是真正的战士。 以及“We see our kids’ college background as a prize demonstrating how well we’ve raised them. But we can’t acknowledge that our obsession is more about us than them.(我们把孩子的大学背景视为一个奖品,证明我们把他们培养得有多好。

根据后文的定语从句“that is important for sewing, cutting and stitching(这对缝纫、切割和缝合很重要)”可知,句中“sewing(缝纫)”,“cutting(切割)”,“stitching(缝合)” 均为外科手术中手工操作相关动

根据文章倒数第二段“A paper from 2011 by Michael Barrett of the University of Cambridge found that the introduction of drug- dispensing robots into hospital pharmacies had different effects. Pharmacists felt the quality of their jobs had improved because they had more time for patient counselling. Pharmacy assistants had a more miserable time of it, however, as their role shrank to loading medicine into the machines.
根据文章最后一段“It is still too early to know how AI will affect the quality of work.

【答案】 19.C

【答案】 24.A
根据文章第一段“As computers become more and more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes (笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.(随着电脑在中国越来越普及,中国人越来越依赖电脑键盘输入汉字。 故选A。
根据第四段第二句到第四句“To create images from prompts, AI generators rely on databases of already existing art and text. This could lead to the creation of images that are intentionally meant to imitate the style of other artists, without their agreement. There is an argument that AI generators work no differently to humans when it comes to being influenced by others’ work.(为了根据提示创建图像,人工智能生成器依赖于已经存在的艺术和文本数据库。 和最后两句“However, a human artist is also adding emotion and nuance (细微差别) into the mix. AI doesn’t do the same — it can only copy.(然而,人类艺术家也在混合中添加情感和细微差别。
根据最后一段第一句“The increasing use of AI will also lead to a devaluing (贬低) of the work of artists.(越来越多地使用人工智能也将导致艺术家的作品贬值。)”

【答案】20.A 21.D 22.A 23.C
根据第四段中“For example, the book suggests catching pests such as field mice and processing them into a “natural” cat food, or raising pets like chickens that provide both company and fresh eggs. When feeding a pet, however, the advice is to favour pet foods made from chicken meat, which is less damaging to the environment than red meat and fish. 故选A项。
根据画线词上文“The authors of the book say that they were “genuinely surprised” when calculating the environmental impact of pets. 以及下文“For example, the book suggests catching pests such as field mice and processing them into a “natural” cat food, or raising pets like chickens that provide both company and fresh eggs.
根据最后一段中““If we didn’t recycle animal by-products to sell, they might instead be abandoned and buried under the earth, which is not very green,” says the director. 故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段中“Now the industry faces another source of criticism as a new book starts a debate about the environmental impact of owning a well-fed pet.

【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A
根据“http://camilla.com.au/”部分中“the Olympic rivalries between athletes probably play very little role in their society anyway.(运动员之间的奥运竞争可能对他们所在的社会几乎起不到什么作用)”可知,该网站认为运动员之间的竞争或许对整个社会影响甚微。
根据“The New York Times”部分中“Previous Olympics have shown that Olympic resources, when the games are over, do not always benefit the host city. The Olympic sites can become ghost towns, so characteristic of the year they were built in as to be aesthetically odd, impractical, inhospitable and unfashionable a decade later.(往届奥运会表明,奥运会结束后,奥运资源并不总是有利于主办城市。 根据“The Guardian”部分中“However, the Olympics has become more commercialized. Money and rewards potentially available from excelling on the international stage have served to incentivize not only professionalization, but also cheating. The professed aspirations of the Olympic movement and the reality of the contemporary Olympics are now utterly opposed.(然而,奥运会已经变得更加商业化。
根据“TIME”部分中最后一段“Above all, countless times the games have instilled hope and togetherness in many. In a world of growing hostility, it’s encouraging to see a sense of peace and togetherness gather every four years(最重要的是,奥运会无数次给许多人注入了希望和团结。
【答案】4.A 5.B 6.C 7.A
根据第一段“It started during yoga class. She felt a strange pull on her neck, a sensation completely foreign to her. Her friend suggested she rush to the emergency room. It turned out that she was having a heart attack. 结果发现她心脏病发作了)”和第二段中“She had been prescribed a cholesterol-lowering statin (他汀) medication, but she never picked up the prescription because of the scary things she had read about statins on the internet. She was the victim of fake medical news. 故选A项。
根据第四段中“The nocebo effect is the opposite: Patients can experience negative effects just because they expect them. B“You feel dizzy after taking the medicine that you believe has side effects.
根据最后一段中“Finally, journalists can do a better job of spreading accurate information. (最后,记者可以更好地传播准确信息)”以及“Such coverage can overstate benefits, claiming for example, that statins could cure cancer; it can also unduly emphasize potential risks, such as suggesting a misleading connection with dementia (痴呆).
通读全文,结合第二段中“She was the victim of fake medical news. (她是虚假医疗新闻的受害者)”以及第三段中“As is true with fake news in general, medical lies tend to spread further than truths on the internet — and they have very real impacts. (与一般虚假新闻一样,医疗谎言在互联网上往往比真相传播得更远——而且它们有着非常真实的影响)”和第四段中“False medical information can also lead to patients experiencing greater side effects through the “nocebo effect”. 故选A项。
【答案】8.C 9.C 10.A 11.B
根据第一段中的“I used to spend a lot of time worrying about how other people judged me. Did I say too much? Too little? Was I too intense, or not fun enough?(我过去常常花很多时间担心别人如何评价我。
根据第三段中的“Later studies confirmed this pattern. Psychologists found that we use our own experiences as an anchor when judging others.(后续研究证实了这一规律。
根据第四段中的“The truth is, we have no idea what others are actually thinking, and we never will. Most likely, they are busy wondering what others think about them. I’m just a blip on the radar of their thoughts. 故选A项。
根据文章第二段“But research shows that most people are not really thinking about us. In fact, studies have found that about 78% of conversations are people talking about themselves. The main function of conversation, researchers said, is to let the speakers share information about who they are.(但研究表明,大多数人其实并没有在真正关注我们。 以及最后一段中的“Realizing that most people’s thoughts center on themselves is incredibly liberating.(意识到大多数人的思绪都聚焦在他们自己身上,这一点能让人获得极大的解脱。)”
