Volunteer Program for Digital Dunhuang
Are you fascinated by ancient Chinese art and eager to make contributions to cultural heritage protection? The Digital Dunhuang Project is now recruiting volunteers from high school students nationwide. This long-term international project aims to record, digitize and share the precious murals and relics in Mogao Caves with people all over the world.
Volunteers will take part in three types of tasks. First, onsite volunteers will travel to Dunhuang during vacations to assist experts with sorting cultural materials, guiding tourists and giving brief introductions of cave art. Second, online volunteers can finish digital tasks at home: editing picture descriptions, translating Chinese introduction texts into English, and replying to foreign visitors’ emails about Dunhuang culture. Third, promotion volunteers are responsible for designing posters and holding campus lectures to call on more young people to care about heritage protection.
The program runs all year round, and each volunteer should serve for at least 30 hours. All participants will receive an official volunteer certificate issued by the Dunhuang Academy, which can be added to your high school practice record. Besides, outstanding volunteers will be offered free tickets to visit the Mogao Caves and a chance to communicate with heritage researchers face to face.
There are basic requirements for all applicants. You must be a senior high school student with good teamwork skills and basic English reading and writing ability. Most importantly, you need to hold a strong passion for traditional Chinese culture and stick to your volunteer tasks once you sign up. Anyone who fails to complete the service hours without proper reasons will not get the certificate.
If you are interested, please fill in the application form on the official website of Digital Dunhuang before October 30. Attach a short self-introduction (within 150 words) talking about your understanding of cultural heritage protection. The interview notice will be sent to your mailbox one week after the application deadline. Don’t miss this precious chance to guard our treasure from the past.

Passage 1
One of the world’s oldest preserved human settlements has been significantly damaged by pouring rain in Pakistan as the country battles the worst floods in its history.
Moenjodaro,a World Heritage site in the Indus River 510 kilometers (316 miles) from Karachi, was built in the Bronze Age,some 5,000 years ago.“Unfortunately we witnessed the mass destruction at the site,” reads a letter from the Culture,Tourism,Antiquities & Archives Department Government of Sindh sent to UNESCO and signed by director Ihsan Ali Abbasi and architect Naveed Ahmed Sangah. The letter adds the site was being used as temporary accommodation for surrounding residents whose own homes had flooded.
Moenjodaro’s significance can’t be underestimated. When it was added to UNESCO’s register in 1980,the organization wrote that Moenjodaro “bears exceptional testimony(证明) to the Indus civilization,” comprising “the most ancient planned city on the Indian subcontinent”.
The letter explains some of the immediate actions the site team has taken to mitigate the flood damage, like bringing in water pumps and repairing brickwork. But it’s clear that these measures will not be enough.
Abbasi and Sangah ended their letter by asking for 100 million Pakistani rupees ($45million) to cover the costs of full repairs.UNESCO has responded to the request for help, allocating $350,000 from its emergency fund for damaged historic sites in Pakistan during UN Secretary General António Guterres’s visit to the flood-stricken country this week.
The funds will go to Moenjodaro and other sites including the Amri Museum. While the sum is far less than needed to fully repair the sites,it will pay for urgent work while UNESCO and the local organization consider the best way forward.Sadly, the conservators of Moenjodaro have known for some time that flooding could bring a serious risk to the site.
In their letter,Abbasi and Sangah express concern that Moenjodaro could be added to the list of UNESCO sites in danger, which the preservation body updates periodically to highlight historic places that are at severe risk of ruin.
1.What makes Moenjodaro special to Pakistan?
A.The geographic feature it bears.
B.The role it played in fighting floods.
C.The mass destruction it suffered in history.
D.The value it holds in history and architecture.
2.Which of the following should a kid choose if he likes to draw on an electronic device?
A.Carla Sonheim’s Kid’s Week. B.Thrive Art School.
C.Udemy. D.Sparketh.
3.What is special about Sparketh?
A.Its classes are free. B.It offers classes to kids of all ages.
C.Its classes are graded. D.It allows kids to upload their works.
Passage 2
At every wedding I attended this past year, the event space has been decorated with family portraits—black-and-white photos of grandparents, parents in 1970s hairstyles and family heirlooms (传家宝) passed down from generations.
As a child,I used to cry when looking at those reminders. When my husband suggested making a slideshow of our family photos for our wedding,I realized we barely had any.It was at that time that I understood just why these kinds of items inspired so many complicated feelings.
My grandparents immigrated from Poland to Cuba in the 1930s.During the Cuban Revolution, their business and home were shut down. The family came to the United States in 1968,leaving everything but a few pieces of clothing behind. My grandparents and mother responded to the pain they had experienced by holding on to things.
Today, when my mother comes to visit, she still brings bags full of useful items even if we have plenty of food.A full cupboard or a house stocked with usable objects is the ultimate expression of love.
Like many who are privileged (幸运的) enough not to have to worry about having basic things,I tended to admire the opposite—the empty spaces of yoga studios, the delightful feeling of sorting through a pile of stuff that I could abandon.
Now that my brother and I have come of age,my parents have both expressed a desire to downsize our possessions.I went through the things that mattered most to me:the books I loved as a child;the CDs made by friends;the college textbooks I never remembered to return. They say that we can appreciate the objects we used to love deeply just by saying goodbye to them. But I didn’t want to give any of them up because they filled with memories of a person I once was,and a person that part of me always will be.
1.When did the author realize the meaning of family old items?
A.When she was attending a friend’s wedding.
B.When she was preparing for her own wedding.
C.When her family came to the United States in 1968.
D.When her mother came to visit, bringing bags full of useful items.
2.What does the author want to show us by sharing her grandparents’ story?
A.In the old days, the elders suffered a lot.
B.The Cuban Revolution brought people much pain.
C.Some old items represent one’s precious memories.
D.The young should treasure today’s happy life.
3.Why didn’t the author want to give up her previous objects?
A.They were the symbols of love. B.They gave her a sense of identity.
C.They reminded her of the old days. D .They were no longer available anywhere.
4.What can we infer from this text?
A.Lost time won’t return any longer. B.A picture is worth a thousand words.
C.Some sort of stuff is worth keeping. D.It’s never too late to make a change.
Passage 3
(23-24 高一下·广东广州·阶段练习)I was brought up in the British, stiff upper lip style. Strong feelings aren't something you display in public. So, you can imagine that I was unprepared for the outpouring of public grief at a Chinese funeral.
My editorial team leader died recently after a short illness. He was 31. The news was so unexpected that it left us all shocked and upset. A female colleague burst into tears and cried sadly at her desk. Somehow, we got through the day's work. The next day was the funeral.
Our big boss stepped forward to deliver a eulogy (悼词) and was soon in tears. She carried on, in Chinese of course, but at the end said in English: "There will be no more deadlines for you in heaven." Next came a long-term colleague who also dissolved in tears but carried on with her speech despite being almost overcome by emotion.
Then a close friend of the dead man paid tribute, weeping openly as he spoke. Sorrow is spreading. Men and women were now sobbing uncontrollably. Finally, the man's mother, supported between two women, addressed her son in his coffin. She almost collapsed and had to be held up. We were invited to step forward to each lay a white rose on the casket. Our dead colleague looked as if he was taking a nap. At the end of the service I walked away from the funeral stunned at the outpouring of emotion.
In the UK, families grieve privately and then try to hold it together and not break down at a funeral. Here in China it would seem that grieving is a public affair. It strikes me that it is more releasing to cry your eyes out than try to keep it bottled up for fear of embarrassment, which is what many of us do in the West.
Afterwards, a Chinese colleague told me that the lamenting (哀悼) at the funeral had been restrained (克制) by Chinese standards. In some rural areas, she said, people used to be paid to mourn noisily. This struck me like something out of novel by Charles Dickens. But we have all seen on TV scenes of grief-stricken people in Gaza and the West Bank, in Afghanistan, Iraq and the relatives of victims of terrorist bombings around the world. Chinese grief is no different. I realized that it's the reserved British way of mourning that is out of step with the rest of the world.
1.What does the underlined words "stiff upper lip style" mean?
A. cold-blooded B. light-hearted
C. self-controlled D. warm-hearted
2.What happened at the funeral?
A. Five individuals made speeches. B. The writer was astonished by the scene.
C. Everyone was crying out loudly. D. The boss's speech was best thought of.
3.What can be implied from the passage?
A. The English might cry noisily for the dead in Dickens' time.
B. Victims of terrorist bombings should be greatly honored.
C. Chinese express their sadness quite unlike other peoples.
D. English funeral culture is more civilized than the others.
4.What is the passage mainly about?
A. An editor's death. B. Funeral customs.
C. Cultural differences. D. Western ways of grief
.Passage 4
There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think.
On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride in their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes in the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should embrace our heritage through our traditional food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.
1.What's the function of food mentioned in the article?
A. To show national identity. B. To help motivate homesickness.
C. To reflect a country's history. D. To show a community's superiority.
2.What does the underlined "it" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The national culture. B. The specific traditional food.
C. A traditional expression of food. D. The old-fashioned taste.
4.Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant?
A. To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B. To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C. To present their own food culture in a new way.
D. To make the dishes popular among customers.
4.What's the author's attitude towards different food cultures?
A. Negative. B. unfair. C. Positive. D. Opposed.
Passage 5
(24-25高一下·湖北武汉·期中)Adults are often ashamed to ask for help. Seeking someone’s help can make you feel like you are broadcasting your inability. New research suggests young children don’t seek help in school for the same reason.
Kayla Good, a graduate student at Stanford University, and Alex Shaw, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Chicago, applied a classic technique to learn more about how children think about reputation: Across several studies, they asked 576 children aged four to nine, to predict the behavior of two characters, Tom and Jack, in a story. Tom genuinely wanted to be smart, and Jack only wanted to seem smart to others. In one study, they told children both characters did poorly on a test, and asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands in front of their class to ask the teacher for help.
The four-year-olds were equally likely to choose either of the two characters as the one who would seek help. But by age seven or eight, children thought Jack would be less likely to ask for help. And children’s expectations were truly “reputational” in nature — they were specially thinking about how the characters would act in front of peers. They could still imagine situations where Jack would seek help: when it could be sought privately (on a computer rather than in person), children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
Given the findings, it seems quite possible that when children themselves are the ones struggling, they, too, might avoid seeking out help if they are concerned about reputation. If so, the unwillingness to seek help when others are present could clearly hold back learning progress. To improve in any field, one must work hard, take on challenging tasks, and ask questions. However, the situation can be difficult when someone is concerned about their impressions on others.
1.What were the children asked to predict about the two characters?
A.Their bad behaviors. B.Their learning progress.
C.Their likeliness to get help. D.Their potential for seeking help.
2.Who was likely to seek private aid according to the eight-year-olds?
A.Tom. B.Jack. C.Both. D.Neither.
3.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A.Children never seek help when in trouble.
B.Reputation concern doesn’t affect kids’ learning.
C.Those caring about others’ views may progress harder.
D.Challenging tasks aren’t needed for improvement.
4.What is the author’s suggestion for kids?
A.Be ready to help others. B.Be brave to ask for help.
C.Care more about reputation. D.Make efforts to be smarter.
Passage 6
(七选五 2024全国Ⅰ卷真题)Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it's vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). 1 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus I don't trust my laptop's spellchecker. 2 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
3 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it's not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 4 However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there's nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. "To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work," wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of "dull". 5 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.
A. I don't often use this dictionary.
B. It takes no account of the context.
C. But I still don't want to replace them.
D. But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.
E. Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.
F. That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.
G. Dictionaries don't always give you enough information.

故填to。
故填which/that。
空前“It is a distinct visual contrast (反差) that shouldn’t work,”和空后“somehow these two very different worlds make a good combination.” 故填but。
这里为本句谓语动词,根据下文“how a city was able to keep such a rich heritage (遗产) while constantly growing.” 故填was amazed。
spend time (in) doing sth.

A(地理特征)、B(抗洪作用)、C(历史上遭受大规模毁坏)均不是它的独特之处。
对应 “when my husband suggested making a slideshow of our family photos for our wedding…I understood just why these kinds of items inspired so many complicated feelings”,是筹备自己婚礼的时候。
3. B解析:定位最后一段 “But I didn’t want to give any of them up because they filled with memories of a person I once was,and a person that part of me always will be.”
下文 “Strong feelings aren't something you display in public.”
2. B解析:定位第四段末尾 “At the end of the service I walked away from the funeral stunned at the outpouring of emotion.” stun = astonish,作者被现场情感宣泄的场面大为震惊。
A. Negative. B. unfair. C. Positive. D. Opposed.
1. A解析:定位第三段 “It also operates as an expression of culture identity…it is a symbol of pride in their culture”。
第三段:*traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring it wherever they go…*
3. D解析:定位第四段 “immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes in the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers.”
原文:asked which of them would be more likely to raise their hands…to ask the teacher for help。- C 选项 *likeliness to get help*:得到帮助;- D 选项 *potential for seeking help*:主动寻求帮助。
2. C解析:定位第三段末尾:when it could be sought privately … children thought both characters were equally likely to ask for it.
A “遇到困难从不求助” 表述绝对;B 与原文相反,声誉顾虑会影响学习;D 和原文 “take on challenging tasks” 相悖。
1.F上文“If you want to be published, it’s vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript(如果你想发表,提交一份完美的、专业的手稿是至关重要的)”提到了完美的、专业的手稿的重要性,手稿中不能有语法和拼写错误是专业的手稿的要求之一。F选项“That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.(这意味着语法正确,没有拼写错误。)”
2.B上文“I don’t trust my laptop’s spellchecker.(我不相信我笔记本电脑的拼写检查器。)”提到了作者不相信电脑的拼写检查器;下文“Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I’m old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers.(当然,现在有很多在线词典和同义词库,但我是一个守旧的人,更喜欢精装的书和能用手指翻阅的书页。)”
3.E下文“It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.(它应该给出每个单词的精确定义,从而将其与其他含义相似但不相同的单词区分开来。它通常还会显示单词的发音。)”提到了字典的功能,E选项“Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.(当然,字典不仅仅是用来拼写的。)”
4.A下文“However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there’s nothing better.(然而,如果我需要检查一个单词的来源或查找其用法的例子,没有什么比这更好的了。)”提到了字典的使用情况,A选项“I don’t often use this dictionary.(我不经常用这本字典。)” 故选A项。
5.D上文“ “To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work, ” wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of ”dull".(约翰逊在解释“dull”的一个定义时写道:“编字典是件无聊的工作(乏味)。”)”提到了编写字典是件乏味的工作,下文“A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.(花几分钟的时间浏览一两页是一种有益的体验。)”提到浏览字典也是一种阅读的乐趣,D选项“But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.(但是一本字典读起来是一种乐趣。)”是作者对字典的评价,与上文的“乏味”形成对比,与上文构成转折关系。故选D项。
