Four Self-Portraits(自画像) by Famous Artists
Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino)—“Self-portrait”, 1506
One of the beautiful self-portraits by famous artist Raphael was drawn at the age of 23. It measures around 45cm×33cm and is located at the world-famous Uffizi Galleries. The Italian painter used oil on board to draw his self-portrait, which was the clearest and the most recognizable self-portrait of Raphael himself.
Leonardo da Vinci—“Portrait of a man in red chalk”, 1513
“Portrait of a man in red chalk” is a self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci at the age of 61 and measures around 33.3cm×21.3cm, which is on display in the Biblioteca Reale, Turin, Italy. It is drawn with red chalk on paper and represents the head of an elderly man in a three-quarter view. In the portrait, the length of the hair is uncommon in Renaissance(文艺复兴) portraits.
Rembrandt van Rijn—“Self-portrait with beret and turned-up collar”, 1660
Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn painted his self-portrait in 1660 when he was 54 years old. It shows his worried expression that clearly portrays the troubled condition of his mind at that point of his life since the year 1660 was a year of anxiety for him. This self-portrait found its place among the Benjamin Altman Collection, which has been exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1913.
Edgar Degas—“Degas au porte-fusain”, 1855
Edgar Degas made this self-portrait only when he was twenty-one years old. It was the most remarkable one of his fifteen self-portraits. Degas was seated seemingly without fear or anxiety. The pose in the painting was formal and academic. The painting is located at the Musée dOrsay, Paris, France.
21.Where should visitors go if they want to admire Raphaels self-portrait in 1506?
A.The Uffizi Gallery. B.The Biblioteca Reale.
C.The Musée dOrsay. D.The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
22.Which aspect of “Portrait of a man in red chalk” was special during the Renaissance?
A.The red clothing. B.The formal pose.
C.The long hair. D.The worried expression.
23.Which painter was the youngest when painting the above-mentioned self-portraits?
A.Raphael. B.Edgar Degas.
C.Leonardo da Vinci. D.Rembrandt van Rijn.

Mia knelt in the wetland, binoculars pressed to her eyes. Every autumn, she came here to watch the bar-headed geese gather before their southward migration (迁徙). This year, though, something was off—one goose fell behind the flock, its left wing drooping awkwardly. Mia held her breath, inching closer. Shed learned never to scare wild birds, but this one seemed too weak to fly away.
“It might have collided with a power line,” Mr. Torres, from the local wildlife rescue center, said after examining the goose. He gently wrapped its wing in gauze. “Bar-headed geese are extraordinary travelers, but their journey is brutal.” As he spoke, he pulled out a map marked with red lines—their migration route. “Theyre one of the highest-flying birds, crossing the Himalayas at 7,000 meters high or more. The thin air, freezing temperatures, and sudden storms make each trip a fight for survival.”
What makes these geese capable of such feats? Their bodies have unique adaptations: larger lungs to absorb more oxygen, hemoglobin that binds tightly to oxygen, and feathers that trap heat efficiently. Unlike most birds, they can even adjust their metabolism (新陈代谢) to conserve energy during the long flight. For centuries, scientists have marveled at their endurance—ancient Chinese texts once described them as “messengers between heaven and earth”.
Over the next month, Mia visited the rescue center every weekend, helping feed the goose she named Cloud. When Mr. Torres finally removed the gauze, Cloud stretched its wings and honked loudly. A week later, Mia stood in the wetland again, watching Cloud join a new flock. As the geese rose into the sky, forming a V-shape to reduce wind resistance, Mia smiled—shed witnessed not just a birds recovery, but the miracle of migration.
24.Why did Mia approach the bar-headed goose carefully?
A.Wild birds might attack people.
B.Wild birds were easily frightened.
C.She wanted to catch it immediately.
D.She needed to take photos of it secretly.
25.What did Mr. Torres do for the injured goose?
A.He taught it how to fly in a V-shape.
B.He sent it to the wildlife rescue center.
C.He studied its unique physical structure.
D.He examined it and treated its injured wing.
26.What does the example of crossing the Himalayas show?
A.The geese prefer to fly at high altitudes.
B.The geeses migration route is easy to track.
C.The geese are bad at dealing with bad weather.
D.The geeses migration journey is extremely tough.
27.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To recommend the way of protecting wild birds.
B.To describe Mias dream of becoming a wildlife rescuer.
C.To tell a story of saving a bird and introduce its migration.
D.To illustrate the migration habits of the bar-headed geese.
C
Dozens of rivers and streams in Alaska are turning rusty(铁锈色的) orange, a likely result of thawing permafrost(永久冻土解冻), a new study finds. The Arctic is the fastest-warming region in the globe, and as the frozen ground below the surface melts, minerals once locked away in that soil are now flowing into waterways.
“Its an unforeseen impact of climate change,” said Brett Poulin, study author and assistant professor of environmental toxicology at the University of California, Davis. The thawing of permafrost is exposing minerals to oxygen in a process known as weathering, which increases the acidity of the water and dissolves(溶解) metals like zinc, copper and iron—the most apparent metal that gives the rivers a rusty color visible even from satellite images. The study highlights the potential degradation of drinking water and risk to fisheries in the Arctic.
“When these rivers are mixed with another river, it can actually make the metals even more potent in its impact on aquatic(水生的) health,” Poulin said. The phenomenon was first observed in 2018, when researchers noticed the milky orange appearance of the rivers across northern Alaskas Brooks Range.
Within the year, a river in Kobuk Valley National Park saw the complete loss of two local fish species. “Our data suggests that when the river turned orange, we saw a significant decrease in macroinvertebrates and biofilm on the bottom of the stream, which are essentially the base of the food web,” Poulin said of the rusting phenomenon. “It could be changing where fish are going to be able to live.”
Rusting is a seasonal phenomenon, occurring in the summer typically during July and August, when the soil is thawed the deepest. The researchers at the National Park Service, US Geological Survey and University of California, Davis now want to better understand the long-term possible effects of the changing water chemistry in places with continuous permafrost, which include Arctic regions such as Alaska, Canada, Russia and parts of Scandinavia.
28.Why do some waters in Alaska change color?
A.Minerals flow into them. B.The acidity decreases.
C.Because of waste. D.Because of unforeseen factors.
29.What negative influence can the thawing of permafrost cause according to the study?
A.It may expose minerals to oxygen.
B.It may contribute to a change in rivers color.
C.It may pose a threat to the fishing industry.
D.It may result in a complete loss of local fish.
30.What does the underlined word “potent” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Hard. B.Powerful.
C.Visible. D.Smelly.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Institutions will further study the issue.
B.Soil is thawed the deepest in the summer.
C.Ongoing thawing permafrost will do harm to Arctic regions.
D.The impact of rusting shouldnt be ignored in the long run.
D
I am addicted to Instagram, particularly to its bookish communities. I cant open the app without seeing a name, an artwork or a quote about one of my favorite book series. But my Instagram feed is flooded with AI “art”—though to me, it is nothing but plagiarism(抄袭). Instagram seemingly has no problem with highlighting AI “artists”, which to me does harm to real artists.
Each AI “art” post takes the place of a bookish artist who spent countless hours creating truly amazing artworks. As a journalist and future educator, I cant view AI “art” as anything but plagiarism because it is collected from artists who have not agreed to the use of their work. Nor do they receive credit for it.
For creatives like Bronwyn Lipka, a 25-year-old bookish artist, the reality of having their work stolen is ever-present. “AI ‘artists’ are essentially stealing your art, but theres no way to know if theyre doing it because they face no consequences,” Lipka said.
And its not just the AI “artists” that are contributing to this culture of unaccountability. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, considers public Instagram posts to be part of its training data—including generative AI art training. Artists must decide whether continuing to use Meta apps, where theyve built up a following, is worth AI stealing their intellectual property.
Many of my favorite artists have made the move to a platform that does not use AI models on user content. Ultimately, if artists continue to leave Meta Platforms, the bookish community will struggle. Worse, if the bookish community starts to fade, book sales will drop sharply right down.
Though I am not against AI and aware that it has the potential to do some really great things, I cannot stand for the continuous lack of forethought in deciding where and when it should be used. I urge Meta and any other company introducing AI into their programming to consider the ethics of doing so, before its too late.
32.What does the author try to say in the first paragraph?
A.Artists feel ashamed of plagiarism.
B.Instagram is a widely used platform.
C.The AI-created works dominate Instagram.
D.The bookish communities need improvement.
33.What can be inferred from Lipkas words in paragraph 3?
A.Artistic competition is becoming intense.
B.AI “art” wont take the place of real art.
C.Bookish artists are losing work ownership.
D.AI “artists” are getting away with stealing art.
34.How does Metas use of Instagram posts affect artists?
A.It exposes them to a wider audience.
B.It drives them to leave Meta Platforms.
C.It increases their book sales significantly.
D.It destroys their faith in intellectual property.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.A rising trend of creating art with AI.
B.Artists struggle for recognition in the AI era.
C.The balance between AI and human creativity.
D.A call for protection of human artists against AI art.

Is studying 12 hours a day possible? This is a question that many students ask themselves when faced with a heavy workload or upcoming exams. 36 Its important to assess your own capabilities and limitations. Not everyone can maintain focus for such long periods of time, so be realistic about what you can handle.
Consider the quality of your study sessions rather than just the quantity of hours spent. Its better to have shorter but more focused study sessions to absorb information effectively than longer sessions. 37 Our brains need time to rest and recharge in order to store information. So, be sure to schedule a short rest every hour or two. Moreover, creating a structured schedule and sticking to it can help maximize productivity. 38
One of the biggest challenges when it comes to studying for long hours is maintaining concentration. Its easy to get distracted or lose focus when youre spending extended periods of time studying. 39 Create a good study environment. Find a quiet and comfortable place where you wont be easily disturbed. Remove any distraction such as your phone or computer. 40 This could include reminder devices, mind maps, or even teaching the material to others. By actively engaging with the content, youll find it easier to concentrate for longer periods. Another helpful tip is to prioritize quality sleep and physical exercise alongside your studies to make your brain and body better equipped for extended periods of focused work.
A.Furthermore, taking regular breaks is essential.
B.Remember that you have your own pace of learning.
C.The answer is both yes and no, as it depends on several factors.
D.Generally speaking, the more hours you spend, the better you will learn.
E.Set specific goals for each study session and track your progress along the way.
F.Additionally, use various study techniques to keep yourself engaged in learning.
G.However, with a few strategies, you can study for long hours with concentration.

No Time
With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year-old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK?”
Holding her oil painting, she frowned(皱眉), and then searched for her dad.
“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you havent seen it yet.”
He smiled at her, saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with the simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔); her face turned apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把……砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knock at the door put a sudden brake on her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didnt look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind. Softly, she asked, “Honey, did I do anything wrong?”
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer resist her anger.
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall.

根据Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino)部分中的“It measures around 45cm×33cm and is located at the world-famous Uffizi Galleries.” 故选A。
根据Leonardo da Vinci部分中的“In the portrait, the length of the hair is uncommon in Renaissance portraits.”
根据Edgar Degas部分中的“Edgar Degas...he was twenty-one years old.”,Raphael部分中的“One of the beautiful...at the age of 23.”,Leonardo da Vinci部分中的“‘Portrait of a man in red chalk’...at the age of 61”及Rembrandt van Rijn部分中的“Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn...he was 54 years old.”
根据第一段中的“Mia held her breath, inching closer. Shed learned never to scare wild birds, but this one seemed too weak to fly away.”
Torres...after examining the goose. He gently wrapped its wing in gauze.”
根据第二段中的“Theyre one of...the Himalayas at 7,000 meters high or more. The thin air, freezing temperatures, and sudden storms make each trip a fight for survival.”
故选A。

根据第一段中的“my Instagram feed is flooded with AI ‘art’”可知,AI艺术作品在Instagram上泛滥成灾。
根据第三段中Lipka的话“AI ‘artists’ are essentially stealing your art, but theres no way to know if theyre doing it because they face no consequences”可知,AI“艺术家”在窃取艺术成果,但由于无需承担任何后果,人们无法知晓他们是否真的这么做了,所以他们可以逃避惩罚。
根据第五段第一句“Many of my favorite artists have made the move to a platform that does not use AI models on user content.”

One possible version:
Dear Daniel,
Pleased to know that you are interested in the painting exhibition at the National Museum, Im writing to share some details about the exhibition, which featured a collection of traditional Chinese paintings.
One of the highlights was Tang Yins masterpiece Clearing After Snow on a Mountain Pass, immersing viewers in a Ming Dynasty winter landscape. Renowned for its masterful brushwork, this artwork vividly depicts snow-covered mountains, trees, and houses with strokes so fluid and natural that the snow appears freshly fallen.
I was deeply moved by the artists ability to capture natures serene beauty. This experience has deepened my appreciation of the timeless elegance of Chinese art.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
One possible version:
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer resist her anger. “Why is everybody so busy?” she roared, tears streaming down. She assumed that her mom and dad would feel proud of her great talent, and would appreciate her painting but she was disgusted with everybody having “no time” for her. “I hate you!” she screamed, grabbed the painting on the table and tore it in half. Shocked, Mom threw her arms around her tightly, announcing regretfully and firmly, “Baby, I am so sorry! I promise this mistake will not be repeated.”
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall. It was beautifully framed and just below the painting was a sentence “We are so proud of you, our little angel!” On seeing it, she burst out crying. She ran to her mom and hugged her tightly as well, fully aware of her moms love. Recalling her moms stress from work and daily life, she was regretting her previous behavior. She ducked her head, apologizing, “Sorry, Mom!” It dawned on them that though everything came and went, mutual understanding would stay forever in their family.

My car engine suddenly stopped in the middle of a deserted road. When I got out of my car to check the engine, I accidentally locked myself out of my car. I was very nervous and scared, given that the road was so dark and quiet. The only thing I could do was sit by the road and hope someone would come by and help me. Luckily, a man rove by. After about twenty minutes, he stopped and asked if he could lend a hand. He let me use his cell phone to call the rescue service. He even waited with me, keeping me company until the truck for rescue service arrived. What a wonderful, helpful man. Before he left, I offered to pay him for helping me, but he refused. He said IT was his pleasure to help out a lady in trouble. All I could do was think him over and over again. If IT had not been for him, I could have been in real trouble. I asked him for his number and promised to meet him and have dinner sometime. I got very lucky that night, thanks to the stranger, I had a special experience.
