B When I signed my first book deal in 2018, looking forward to the release of my debut(首次亮相) novel in 2020, I knew I was about to embark on an amazing adventure. I went into my first contract(合约) determined to make it work. By that I meant to be successful enough to guarantee that I'd be signed again and again. I thought it was a case of Go Big or Go Home.    Admittedly, debuting is always stressful, but I definitely made things more difficult by pressuring myself to promote the book and beating myself up when anything didn't go well. The odds were not in my favour, with my editor leaving. The thing I feared most happened: my contract wasn't renewed. I felt absolutely depressed, embarrassed too, in that my first book hadn't sold well. Luckily, I was in a group of debut authors, so I had plenty of support. Over time I watched other people's journeys with interest. Some debuted straight into the bestseller lists; some had film rights optioned. Others, like me, had a less-than-ideal start. Some had even more difficult times—lost agents, cancelled contracts and dashed hopes. The most important thing I learned is that there is no one fixed path to success and that courage and determination go a long way. I've seen authors with a poor sales record getting another shot; those who didn't start well sometimes find huge success with their second novel. There are so many different paths and always new things to dream about. Those who've read my column from the start might have seen my blind optimism, my crash and my reflection on writerly life. However, I'm pleased that I'm able to write this, my last column, and say that I am finally optimistic, excited, even, about the future, about my ability to diversify, experiment and network and above all, write and write and write. I know there will be lows, but as long as I can write, I'll be alright. 24.What does the underlined part “Go Big or Go Home” imply about the author? A.Her determination to achieve success. B.Her optimism for the writing career. C.Her confidence in having two options. D.Her fear of potential challenges. 25.What is paragraph 3 of the text mainly about? A.The feedback on the first book. B.The process of releasing the book. C.The strategies of promoting the book. D.The challenges of debuting the book. 26.What lesson has the author learned from the debut authors? A.Well begun, half done. B.All roads lead to Rome. C.Practice makes perfect. D.Great minds think alike. 27.Where is this text probably taken from? A.A scientific journal. B.A literary magazine. C.A book review. D.A private letter. C It is a classic problem for job seekers and anyone else: If you brag(吹嘘) about your accomplishments, you seem more competent—but less likable. The solution? Add a bit of playfulness when discussing your talents. A team of researchers has found that “humblebragging”—referring to your accomplishments behind a veil of humor—allows people to play up their skills without being described as vain. And that makes them more likely to get hired or get their opinion accepted. “The self-enhancing humor helps them be seen as confident without sacrificing likability,” says Jieun Pai, an assistant professor at Imperial College London who led the research. The researchers used a series of studies to test the impact of what they called humblebragging. In one instance, they sent out two resumes to 345 companies—but one of the resumes added a dash of self-promotional humor instead of being purely serious: “The more coffee you can provide, the more output I will produce.” The resume with the joke got an email or a callback by 156 companies, versus 125 for the other. In another case, the researchers found that study participants were more likely to hire chefs who are humorous when selling themselves. One chef described making a soccer-themed cake for a boy's fifth-birthday party and mentioned that he got the biggest tip he had ever seen. A baker who was the hiring favorite told the same story, but ended up by saying, “I am just glad that I only had to make the soccer ball, not actually kick one.” “People need to be cautious, though, when using humor to sell themselves,” Pai says. Self-deprecating(自嘲式的) humor without any bragging at all, or humor intended to belittle(贬低) others in any form, doesn't have the same positive impact that humblebragging does, according to the research. “We sometimes use self-deprecating humor, but that may lead to the opposite result that was intended,” she says. “It doesn't help you be seen as more competent.” 28.What do we know about humblebragging? A.It lowers likability. B.It is favored by employers. C.It is a must for job seekers. D.It makes one appear overconfident. 29.Which aspect of humblebragging does the research team focus on? A.Various forms. B.Psychological causes. C.Beneficial effects. D.Practical applications. 30.What can we say about the two chefs from paragraph 4? A.They expect the same salary. B.They differ in working experience. C.They specialize in different types of cakes. D.They adopt distinct ways of self-introduction. 31.Which example agrees with Pai's advice on humblebragging? A.I'm a challenge addict—bring on the tough stuff! B.I'm an office clown, who always makes everyone laugh. C.I'm the master of the “almost got it”—close enough is good enough. D.I may not be the smartest person, but I'm surely smarter than the next guy! D Jeff Kromrey, 69, will sit down with his daughter the next time she visits and show her how to access his online accounts if he has an unexpected health crisis. Gayle Williams, 69, plans to tackle a project she's been putting off for months: organizing all her financial information. These seniors have been inspired to take these actions by an innovative course for such “solo agers”: Aging Alone Together, offered by Dorot, a social services agency in New York City. More than 1,000 people have participated in the program since it was launched in 2021. Dorot is working with partners across the country to expand its reach. The program consists of six 90-minute, interactive weekly sessions that focus on the seniors' key concerns: building communities of support, figuring out where to live, completing advance care directives such as living wills, and getting financial and legal affairs in order. The program is to help participants overcome fear and hesitation when they are planning for their uncertain futures. Practical tools, advice, and resources are provided to motivate people to take action. Additionally, it aims to develop a sense of community that promotes a “can do” attitude. As Nisen emphasized, “Solo aging doesn't mean aging alone; instead, it means planning for the future.” That message moved Davis deeply, a single artist in Manhattan, who is facing the challenge of finding meaningful activities as arthritis(关节炎) limits his ability to paint. Despite having long-term care insurance and a rent-regulated apartment with an elevator, he feels lonely without his artistic pursuits(追求). “There are days that go by when I don't say a word to anyone,” Davis admitted. “I have my friends, but they have their own lives, with their children and grandchildren. I'm turning to Dorot for more social contacts. And Aging Alone Together has helped me focus on the here and now.” 32.Why does the author mention Jeff Kromrey and Gayle Williams in paragraph 1? A.To introduce Dorot's program. B.To illustrate the daily life of the elderly. C.To highlight family ties. D.To show the significance of a course. 33.What is one goal of Aging Alone Together? A.To donate money regularly to seniors. B.To guide seniors to embrace loneliness. C.To encourage seniors to plan for the future. D.To help seniors overcome the fear of living alone. 34.What is Davis' attitude towards Aging Alone Together? A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Disapproving. D.Uncaring. 35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A.Challenges of Aging Alone B.Approaches to Overcoming Loneliness C.Dorot's Initiative: Finding Balance in Solo Aging D.Empowering Seniors: Aging Alone Together Program With rapid technological development, AI continues to impact industries across the globe. Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat. “I can't believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I'll get mine done.” I didn't say anything. It's not because I was nervous—I wasn't nervous at all. I love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn't work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing. I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it's a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang. It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I'd come to help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love Abuela's world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year! I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream cheese filling in another. It was 7 o'clock when I finally got home. I planned to work on my project right after we ate. They'll help you find the program that's right for you, and ensure you have all the information needed to apply.” Financing Your Bethel Education部分中要求申请的学生“Have a good record regarding previous student aid.”,即在之前的学生资助方面有良好的记录。B项“Credit history(信用记录)”与之相符。 根据第二段中的“By that I meant to be successful enough to guarantee that I'd be signed again and again.” “Go Big or Go Home(要么大获成功,要么彻底失败)”正体现了她获得成功的坚定决心。故选A。 根据第四段中的“The most important thing I learned is that there is no one fixed path to success”可知,作者从其他新人作家身上领悟到成功没有固定路径。B项“All roads lead to Rome.(条条大路通罗马。)” “Great minds think alike.(英雄所见略同。)” 根据第二段中的“And that makes them more likely to get hired or get their opinion accepted.”以及第三段中的“The resume with the joke got an email or a callback by 156 companies, versus 125 for the other.” 由第二段中提到的研究结论“A team of researchers has found that...accepted.” 根据第四段可知,两位厨师都分享了制作足球主题蛋糕的经历,但一位仅陈述事实,另一位加入了一些幽默因素(“I am just glad that I only had to make the soccer ball, not actually kick one”),二者的自我介绍方式不同。 根据最后一段中“Self-deprecating humor without any bragging at all, or humor intended to belittle others in any form, doesn't have the same positive impact that humblebragging does”可知,Pai的建议是“自我提升式幽默自夸”,需满足“体现自身优势(自夸)+带有幽默色彩”,且避免“纯粹自嘲”或“贬低他人”。 故选A。 根据第一段中“These seniors have been inspired to take these actions by an innovative course for such ‘solo agers’: Aging Alone Together, offered by Dorot, a social services agency in New York City.” 故选A。 根据第三段中“The program is to help participants overcome fear and hesitation when they are planning for their uncertain futures.”及Nisen强调“Solo aging doesn't mean aging alone; instead, it means planning for the future.” 根据最后一段中“I'm turning to Dorot for more social contacts. And Aging Alone Together has helped me focus on the here and now.” 故选A。 Para. Para. Para. Para. 4—Para. 41.B 根据下文“This spring I was 52 able to finish the work to graduate from Howard University”可知,安德森从霍华德大学毕业,拿到了(received)霍华德大学的美术学士学位。 42.C 根据上文“It was all a dream!” 43.A 根据下文“finishing what I started many years ago”可知,对于安德森来说,最自豪的时刻是一种完成(completion)感——完成他多年前开始的事情。 44.C 根据下文“some financial difficulties, he had to ask for a 45 from school”可知,由于(On account of)经济困难,安德森不得不休学。in terms of就……而言;with regard to关于;by comparison with与…… 45.D 根据上文“some financial difficulties”以及下文“The following years he was occupied in his work and didn't return to school.” 47.A 根据下文“He played the starring roles in many films”可推知,安德森取得了成功,他的事业腾飞(took off)。start over重新开始;slow down减速;pull up慢慢停下。 48.D 根据上文“He played the starring roles in many films”可知,安德森很受欢迎。 49.D 根据上文“he had to ask for a 45 from school”以及“The following years he was occupied in his work and didn't return to school.” 50.B 根据下文“That inspired his longing for university study, so he was 51 to go back and finish his degree.” 51.C 根据下文“to go back and finish his degree”以及“This spring I was 52 able to finish the work to graduate from Howard University”可知,安德森决心(determined)回去完成自己的学位。 52.B 根据下文“able to finish the work to graduate from Howard University”以及语境可知,安德森终于(eventually)完成学业,从霍华德大学毕业了。 53.A 根据上文“This spring I was 52 able to finish the work to graduate from Howard University”以及下文“by calling it ‘a full-circle moment’”可知,安德森将完成学业当作一个里程碑(milestone)。 54.D 根据下文“It's never too late. I worked on a project to create a sustainable garden model using household waste. It was challenging, with endless research and many late nights spent tweaking my design. But I persevered, seeking help from my biology teacher when needed. On the day of the fair, my hard work paid off. When they announced me as the winner, I felt an immense sense of success. This experience taught me that success is not just about achieving a goal, but also about the resilience and growth that come from overcoming challenges. One possible version: Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it's your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me, leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules, so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clinking of dishes was disquieting, reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet, I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten. Without much time left, I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day, I handed it in nervously. Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days. My life seemed in a mess these days, arising from my loose attitude and chaotic schedule. My energy was occupied by some trivial matters which had nothing to do with my project. Out of guilt, I explained to my teacher and promised this would never happen again. After this experience, I eventually comprehended the importance of time, and began to arrange my schedule with caution. With confidence, I was firmly convinced that I could get a satisfying score in the next assignment. Mike, do you know that my sister amy was admitted to peking . university?
