For years, I went to school by bus, so I met many “familiar (熟悉的)” strangers. We took the same bus but didn’t know each other’s names. I used to think it was impossible for us to be true friends. How wrong I was! Smiles from the “nameless” people have changed my thoughts.
The first time on the bus, I saw different faces, we met, greeted, and cold faces turned into smiling faces. As days went on, we chatted like old friends.
But I felt it a pity that I was unable to set up the same friendship with a silent girl in front of the bus. Her old clothing suggested (暗示) that she didn’t have much money, but she always took a glass of water for the driver. I guessed she was a kind girl. But why did she sit in silence instead of talking with us? Why did she never reply to our friendly greetings? Couldn’t she smile?
Then, one evening, I got the answer. I walked to the park nearby and found the girl sitting alone under a tree, lonely and sad. I greeted her with the same warm smile that I had shown to her all these months, but this time her face turned red with a shy smile. As soon as she began her first words, I understood why she hadn’t spoken to us before. Talking was hard for her.
I learned her story. Her parents worked hard somewhere. She lived with her disabled grandparents. She said, “I can’t express myself very well. Most of the time, I can’t say what I want to say. I have no friends but... You always smile at me like an angel... so I also want to smile.”
That evening, we exchanged our names, and we said goodbye like old friends. A smile is the key to opening the door of the heart; it can break the cold walls in front of us.
4.All the following words can describe (描述) the girl EXCEPT ________.
A.silent B.kind C.proud D.poor
5.Why did the girl usually keep silent on the bus according to the passage?
A.Because she was a very proud person and didn’t like others.
B.Because she found it difficult to express herself and speak clearly.
C.Because she was busy preparing water for the bus driver.
D.Because her grandparents told her not to talk to strangers.
6.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.The girl only talked with the driver.
B.The girl was too shy to talk to others.
C.The writer knew the name of the girl that evening.
D.The writer can’t make friends with those nameless people on the bus now.
7.The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A.we should help those silent people
B.smiles can deal with every difficulty we meet
C.we should smile to the nameless people on the bus
D.smiles can help us get closer and understand each other better

Tyrone is thinking about joining the new chess club at school. He tells his best friend Malik while they watch a football game. “What?” Malik laughs. “That’s a big mistake! Chess clubs are not cool at all!”
For a moment, Tyrone doesn’t say anything. Then he remembers his mother’s words, “Chess is about thinking ahead and making good moves. That’s just right for you.” So he decides to join the club anyway.
The next week at their lockers, Malik asks, “Got time for a movie?” Tyrone answers. “I just joined the chess club. I’m going to the first meeting now.” Malik starts shouting, “People are going to laugh at you!” Tyrone shouts back, “That’s not right! It’s okay for you to join the basketball team. And it’s okay for me to find something I like.” Malik finally turns, then walks away.
As he leaves, Tyrone can’t stop worrying. What if he loses Malik over this? Maybe this is the end of their relationship.

One day at the lockers, Malik reaches out and shakes his friend’s hand. “Congratulations on the chess win. That’s pretty cool,” he says with a smile. “I’m sorry about all the bad things I said about the club. You don’t have to play sports to be a winner.”
Tyrone smiles back, feeling sudden warmth. “So, do you think you can find any time to go bike riding with me this weekend?” Malik asks. “Sure,” Tyrone replies happily. “I always have time for my best friend.”

① Do you know E-person and I-person? These two kinds of personalities are much discussed online. Even twins may be quite different from each other, such as personalities, hobbies, friends and so on. To learn more about that, let’s hear from the following twins.
② Andy, an Extrovert
I enjoy trying new things and playing with many friends. Ken and I head to the beach on Saturdays to surf, and on Sundays, I hang out with Tom, eating and riding. At school, Larry is my best friend. I don’t spend much time with him over the weekends because he likes to play video games at home just by himself. I’m cool with it because I can visit other friends. I value (重视) his friendship a lot because Larry cares about me and often gives great advice about my problems.
③ Anna, an Introvert
I think nothing is more enjoyable than staying on the sofa by myself with a great book in hand. However, I do also need time with my two best friends, Sue and Tina. Sue is so full of life that her jokes bring much joy to my quiet days. Tina is more like me, and she understands me better than I do. We often take a long walk to share our feelings. I love both my friends and need their different personalities to make my life colorful.
④ Well, there we have it from the horse’s mouth. From Andy and Anna, introverts and extroverts can be friends and also need friends with different personalities. So start to make different friends and enjoy the special friendship!

Friendship is an important part of life, but not everyone is good at making friends. That is OK. Making friends is a skill that can be learned. Here is some helpful advice. Be friendly to others.
To make friends, you must be friendly to others. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better discuss the things with them. Think more of others than of yourself, and never judge (评判) a person by his look. Build your conversational skills.
To start a conversation, you can use short questions like “What do you do for fun?” or “Do you have any pets?”. Don’t ask questions that are too private. Work on your social skills.
Part of being a good friend is having good social skills. For example, make cookies for somebody whose pet is sick. Spending time showing someone that you care about him is also a great way to make a new friend.
Don’t be sad if you don’t have many friends. Maybe that’s because you don’t have enough chances to meet them. Try to play with children who have the same hobbies. It is a great way to find new friends. With a little practice, you will soon have a friend or two.
A.Look for more chances.
B.Spend more time on hobbies.
C.Smile at someone and you are sure to get a smile in return.
D.You need to learn to care for others, especially when they’re in trouble.

D.Because her grandparents told her not to talk to strangers.

Tyrone smiles back, feeling sudden warmth. “So, do you think you can find any time to go bike riding with me this weekend?” Malik asks. “Sure,” Tyrone replies happily. “I always have time for my best friend.”

② Andy, an Extrovert
I enjoy trying new things and playing with many friends. Ken and I head to the beach on Saturdays to surf, and on Sundays, I hang out with Tom, eating and riding. At school, Larry is my best friend.
