In 1955, polio hit children across China. Lots of sick children could never walk or even lost their lives. In 1957, Gu Fangzhou and his team started to work on a vaccine for polio. They went to the mountains of Yunnan and did research there. To test whether the vaccine was safe, the scientists took the vaccine themselves at first. Later, Gu Fangzhou even tried this new vaccine on his own young kid.
In December 1960, China’s first group of polio vaccines went into use. The vaccine saved five million children from polio and stopped polio from spreading fast. In 1963, three million children took the sugar pills. In September 1994, China reported no polio patients. In 2000, WHO said clearly that China was polio‑free.
Up to 2000, Gu Fangzhou spent 44 years working on polio vaccines. On January 2nd, 2019, the 92‑year‑old scientist passed away. His last words were, “I did only one thing all my life, and it was well worth doing.”
