Everyone sleeps. Good sleep helps you get enough rest and stay energetic. While you sleep, your brain processes the information it has received during the day and forms memories. Also, your body does lots of repair work—refreshing tired body parts, reducing pains and cleaning up waste in your body.
Today, people sleep for a whole night. However, diaries, books and other records from the 15th to 17th centuries suggest people used to sleep differently. People would go to sleep between 9 pm and 11 pm for a couple of hours. They would wake up for a while, and during this period they might read a book, visit a neighbor or do some chores. Afterwards, they would lie down for the second sleep, which lasted until morning. Researchers think it was the invention of the light bulb in 1879 that changed this. Electric lights meant people started staying up later, so when they finally went to bed, they slept until morning.
The Industrial Revolution (工业革命) also changed how people slept. Starting in the 18th century, people moved from the countryside to the city to work in the factories. People had to get up and start their job at a certain time. To make sure people didn’t oversleep, knocker-uppers also known as wake-up helpers appeared. They made money by waking people up. Every morning, they would walk down the street knocking on doors or windows with sticks. As alarm clocks grew popular in the 1930s and 1940s, knocker-uppers weren’t needed any more.
Today, our sleep is mainly influenced by both social pressure and electronic products. Falling asleep becomes hard and sleeping quality goes down. Put screens away 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. Keep a comfortable bedroom temperature, avoid bright light and reduce the nearby noise. These will help you relax and wind down. If you have lots of thoughts or worries, writing them down before bedtime can help you put them aside for the night.

3.原文第二段指出“People would go to sleep between 9 pm and 11 pm for a couple of hours. They would wake up for a while...Afterwards, they would lie down for the second sleep”,即15至17世纪的人们一晚有两次睡眠,分为两个时段,因此应填two periods
4.原文第三段指出“To make sure people didn’t oversleep, knocker-uppers also known as wake-up helpers appeared. They made money by waking people up”,即工业革命时期人们需要为敲窗人的服务付费,“pay for”表示“为……付费”,因此应填paid。
5.原文第四段指出“Put screens away 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. Keep a comfortable bedroom temperature, avoid bright light and reduce the nearby noise”,这些措施都是为了创造一个合适的睡眠环境,因此应填environment。

Would you ride in a car that drives by itself? Driverless cars use cameras, sensors (传感器) and computers to see the road, stop at red lights and avoid other cars. They use AI to work out the quickest and safest route. Although driverless cars have these high-tech tools, not everyone wants to try them. Are driverless cars a good idea?
Some people think driverless cars are the future of travel. Driving long distances is hard on human drivers. But that’s not a problem for driverless cars. It can carry on without needing a break for the whole journey. If passengers want to sing or play games, they wouldn’t have to worry about distracting (使分心) the driver. What’s more, driverless cars will help build a whole new industry and create a large number of jobs for people over the next 10 years.
However, some have different opinions. Instead of trying out driverless cars, we should explore more planet-friendly ways to travel. Anyway, some passengers like talking to their taxi drivers, especially if they’re in a new city and want to ask questions about it. Though computer-operated cars might be efficient (效率高的) ways to get around, we should think about humans too. If driverless cars take over, what will taxi drivers do for a living instead? Besides, computers can get things wrong. In some areas, driverless cars have led to serious accidents.

Your dog turns its head when you cry, moves around when you’re stressed and shows up by your side in your worst moments. Why are they so sweet? After thousands of years of living with us, dogs have learned to pick up on our voices, faces and even our smells.
Dogs’ brains have areas that react (回应) to voices, just like ours do. Scientists found that certain brain parts light up when dogs hear voices. They don’t just notice the sound itself, but also the feelings in your words.
Dogs are also good at reading faces. When they look at pictures of human faces, their brain activity rises. An MDPI study showed that seeing a familiar face starts a dog’s emotional (情感的) center.
Interestingly, dogs can even smell emotions. In a 2018 study, dogs introduced to sweat from frightened people showed more stress than dogs that smelled “happy” sweat. Simply put, your worry has a smell your dog can pick up, while your calmness helps them relax.
So how did dogs get so good at reading our emotions? The answer is in evolution (进化). A Russian fox experiment found that foxes raised for friendliness develop better in the emotional center. For dogs, thousands of years beside humans have improved their abilities to read our social and emotional signs.

Kicking legs, waving sticks on stage...are you surprised by those skillful “Kung Fu Masters” on the 2026 Spring Festival Gala? They are from a Chinese technology company—Unitree. Now, it’s on the way to developing humanoid robots.
Humanoid robots are robots that look like and behave like humans. Their main goal is to work in places built for people and help with everyday tasks.
Different from traditional factory robots, which only work in factories, humanoid robots are produced to live and work with humans. They can open doors, use tools and talk to people. Today, humanoid robots have become real, not just in movies, because of fast growth in AI and robotics.
How do they work like humans? First, their body shape is similar to ours. They have human-like bodies with arms, legs, heads and sensing parts. Special machines let their bodies move freely. Cameras and sensing parts help them see things and hold objects. Next, AI gives them “brains”. It helps them understand the environment, learn new skills and answer human orders quickly.
Many Chinese companies are making huge progress in developing such robots. In the future, we can always see them in many places at any time. They will be good helpers in homes, hospitals, schools and workplaces. They will also do more challenging or boring jobs for humans around the clock. With better technology, they will certainly have a great influence on how we work, study and live.

Spring is a symbol of new beginning, and spring outings are good chances to get close to nature. Do you know what activities ancient people did during spring outings?
As early as the Western Zhou Dynasty, at the beginning of spring, the king led his officials (官员) to a spring-welcoming ceremony, which could be called the earliest national-level “spring launch event”.
In the Tang Dynasty, there was an elegant (优雅的) spring game called doubaicao. People collected unusual flowers and grasses, and competed to get the largest number.
In the Song Dynasty, activities were mostly centered around Qingming Festival. People connected tomb sweeping with spring outings. They also took part in cuju. Cu means kicking and ju is a kind of leather ball. People kicked the ball through an opening into a net.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, willow-shooting (射柳) was an event of the era. People shot an arrow (箭) through a willow leaf from a hundred steps. Swinging and kite-flying also enjoyed popularity at that time.
As time goes by, spring outings today not only inherit (继承) the spirit of ancient traditions, but also have been developing in forms and content. The only thing that doesn’t change is the love and longing for a better life in the hearts of Chinese people.

The Time-eating Monster
Have you ever noticed a monster (怪兽) around us? It’s not big or scary, but it’s very dangerous. This monster comes in many forms-games, social media and TV shows. You may ask, “It brings us so much fun. But why do you say it’s a monster?”
For example, we may all think, “I’ll just have a little fun.” At first, we turn on the computer and start a game, but soon the monster comes. Then it starts to eat away our time, minute by minute. Finally, we just sit there and look at the screen without noticing it at all.
We often get lost in the monster’s world like this. We become couch potatoes (电视迷) with sore necks and dry eyes. We miss sweet moments with loved ones. We are deaf to the real world.
Just remember, too much fun also makes Jack a dull boy! The time-eating monster will always be there. But we can keep it away by having fun in a proper way.
So, stand up and leave the screens! Go outside, feel the sun on your face. Play tennis or go hiking with your friends. Talk about your day with your family.

Do you save old movie tickets or candy wrappers in your bag?
Instead of throwing them away, many young people are now turning this “junk” into art. This is called junk journaling (垃圾手账). It is a popular art of making your journals with old things like train tickets or photos. These things show where you’ve been and what you’ve done. They can help to keep your memories alive in a new way.
Why is junk journaling popular? First, there are no rules. You don’t need to be a great artist or spend much money. Just glue things together and have fun. What’s more, it is also about making friends. Everyone can go to the clubs to show their works and tell stories through their pages.
Making a junk journal is easy and fun. First, just find an old book cover. Fold it in half to make the cover of your junk journal. Then, get your pages ready with different kinds of paper. Next, put the pages into the cover and tie them together. Finally, make it beautiful! Add small bags or stickers (贴纸). Glue your movie tickets or photos in them. Remember: there are no rules. Just have fun and use your hands to tell your own stories!

Cockatoos (凤头鹦鹉) are very smart. Past studies show they can solve hard problems, use tools and even copy human speech. Now, scientists have found that these clever birds have learned to dip (蘸) food into sauces, perhaps to make it taste better. Doctor Jeroen Zewald from the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and his team first saw this by accident. They noticed two pet cockatoos dipping their food into blueberry yogurt during breakfast. They wondered if the birds were doing this on purpose, so they decided to look into it more.
The team did 14 tests with a group of 18 birds. Each 30-minute period had bowls with Italian noodles, cauliflower (菜花), potatoes or carrots. The birds were also given three sauces—soy yogurt, blueberry soy yogurt and water.
The cockatoos didn’t care for the carrots or cauliflower. But they liked the pasta and potatoes. Nine birds even dipped them into the blueberry yogurt before eating. They really seemed to enjoy mixing the pasta with the blueberry yogurt. They also liked the dipped food more than just the yogurt by itself.
“The birds had a problem that their food was not tasty enough, so they went to the yogurt, really dipped it in like we would with fries and ketchup, and then they ate it together,” said Dr Zewald.
The team shared their results in the magazine Current Biology on Feb 10, 2025. Since only half of the birds tried dipping, the team thinks this is a new habit. They don’t know if one bird showed the others or if each bird worked it out alone. The team will keep watching the 18 birds to find out more.

Ella Dove’s first children’s book, How to Roller-Skate with One Leg, is an inspiring (激励的) and uplifting story that celebrates friendship, family and overcoming challenges. In the book we meet 12-year-old Maya Bright who has lost her leg after a road accident on her way to school. Dove is a writer and reporter who lost her right leg aged 25 following a running accident. During her recovery, Dove kept a diary about her experiences and decided that she wanted to help others through her writing and change people’s ideas about what it’s like to be an amputee (someone who has had an arm or leg cut off). Dove says, “I chose roller-skating as the activity that my character learns to do because it’s one of the things where you’d be like, you’ve got one leg, you can’t do that!”
In the story, we join Maya as she excitedly returns to school, only to discover that her best friend has ditched (抛弃) her for a new group of girls. “At that age you’re experiencing friendship struggles (挣扎), dilemmas, fitting in and learning who you truly are,” says Dove.
Maya finds a list that she made before her accident: On the list were the fun things she would like to experience…She’s still going to tick off all of them by her 13th birthday. Some goals are easy, but others—like learning how to roller-skate—are more difficult with an artificial leg. With the support of family and friends, Maya—who Dove describes as a “determined (坚定的) and fun” girl—finds a way to overcome her challenges. Dove hopes the book will inspire readers to try new things, believe in themselves and depend on their friendships when things get hard.
She says, “Whatever you’re going through, whether it’s moving to a new school or a huge thing like an accident I had, through difficult times there is always hope. It’s going to be OK.”
