B Having an older brother comes with plenty of benefits. Big brothers tend to look out for their younger brothers and sisters, and despite the occasional rocky moment here and there, many siblings (兄弟姐妹) enjoy life-long close relationships. However, a new study finds an interesting disadvantage: children with older brothers take longer when it comes to developing language skills. The study, conducted by a group of researchers in Paris, France, builds upon previous research that had already discovered that having older siblings is associated with poor language development. Now, researchers say they have improved those findings to come to a more specific conclusion: only children with an older brother exhibit these language difficulties. One would assume that children with older brothers would grow up around more conversation on a daily basis, thus speeding up their language development. Yet researchers say such children actually take longer than their older brothers to begin developing these skills. Researchers studied more than 1,000 children from birth to the age of five-and-a-half years old. Each child’s language skills were tested at ages 2, 3, and 5.5, using tests specially designed to measure numerous aspects of language development such as vocabulary, syntax, and verbal reasoning. What the research team discovered was significant: children with an older brother had, on average, a two-month delay in their language development compared to studied children with an older sister. As far as explaining this phenomenon, researchers have put forward two hypotheses. The first is that older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would make up for parents potentially being less present than they were for their first child. The second is that older sisters usually compete with their siblings less than older brothers for their parents’ attention. As of now, the study’s authors say they can’t say for certain why children with older brothers have a harder time developing language skills. In the future they would like to find out if culture or location affects the popularity of these results. 24. Who has a two-month delay in their language development? A. An only child in the family. B. Children with brothers and sisters. C. Only children with an older sister. D. Only children with an older brother. 25. What is the second paragraph mainly about? A. The whole process of the research. B. The real causes of the result. C. The exact conclusion of the study. D. The sincere relationship of the siblings. 26. What does the underlined word “hypotheses” mean in Paragraph 6? A. Phenomena. B. Researches. C. Assumptions. D. Consequences. 27. What possibly causes the interesting disadvantage according to the text? A. Older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers. B. Culture or location affects the popularity of these results. C. Parents stay longer with their second child than the first one. D. Older brothers often challenge their siblings less than older sisters. C Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families, a child’s success is always “on show”. Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person. The term “peacock parenting” comes from the idea of being “as proud as a peacock”. Here it means a self-centered style of parenting. A peacock parent may show off a “perfect family” in public, yet criticize the child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations. Over time, the child may learn that love is conditional. They may hide their real feelings, stop exploring their own interests, and start to believe, “I am not worthy.” Experts describe three common signs. The first is psychological control. When the child sets a boundary or feels upset, the parent may say, “You’re too sensitive,” and turn the blame back onto the child. This often creates a sense of guilt. The second is unpredictable mood swings. The parent can be warm one day and cold the next, making the child feel like they are “walking on eggshells”. In adulthood, this may lead to people-pleasing and weak boundaries. The third is role reversal. Some parents fail to provide proper care and attention, or even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically. As a result, the child may grow up too fast and miss out on a normal childhood. Healing takes time, but it is possible. The first step is to be kinder to yourself and reconnect with your own interests. Supportive friends, groups, or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing. Clear boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact may be necessary. After all, there are many places to find warmth, and not all of them are under a parent’s roof. 28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1? A. To offer the solutions. B. To describe a study. C. To raise an issue. D. To explain the causes. 29. What does “peacock parenting” in paragraph 2 mainly focus on? A. Giving children unconditional family love secretly. B. Teaching children to express real thoughts honestly. C. Helping kids explore personal interests bravely. D. Showing off the family image for public praise. 30. Which sign best matches “role reversal” in paragraph 3? A. The parent praises the child in public. B. The parent relies on the child for support. C. The child tries to win others’ approval. D. The child avoids setting any boundaries. 31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Cut off contact with parents completely to stay safe. B. Try their best to win parents’ unconditional love again. C. Move out immediately to find warmer places outside. D. Build firm personal boundaries and seek proper support. D The train gave a high-pitched warning, and the doors closed with a sharp sound. A passenger threw herself into the seat next to me, holding a bunch of shopping bags tightly against her chest. “Anyone sitting here?” she asked. “No, please sit,” I replied, wishing the train would start moving soon. I boarded at Cardiff Central Train Station after spending the New Year’s holiday with my parents. I was supposed to go home the next week, but a call from my wife completely messed up the plan: Our daughter’s singing competition had been brought forward to that evening. Now I sat staring at my watch, silently begging the engine to go faster. The train was crowded with last-minute shoppers, and a few seats away three teenage girls were laughing and showing each other gifts. Their northern accents were a small comfort to me. “In a rush?” the lady beside me asked. I nodded and began to explain my situation, trying to ignore the pity I saw in her eyes. As the train stopped at each station, the growing darkness outside seemed to steal any hope I had. I checked my phone again and again, but there was no reply from my wife. Finally, the train arrived. I rushed out of the station and into the biting cold. Snow was falling like feathers, but I had no time to admire it. Finding a taxi, I gave the driver my destination — the City Concert Hall — and felt my voice break. The taxi drove through the busy market, while I kept looking at my phone, feeling each minute slip away too fast. At last, the taxi pulled up outside the hall. I paid and hurried inside, where a volunteer pointed me to the competition hall. I ran as fast as I could, fearing that I might be too late. The doors were locked; I pressed the bell impatiently. With a soft click, the door opened, and I found myself facing a crowd of parents and teachers. Just then, I heard the words I had been waiting for: “She made it! Your daughter won first place!” 32. How did the author feel according to paragraph 1? A. Embarrassed. B. Anxious. C. Hopeful. D. Shocked. 33. Why did the author go back early? A. To join the New Year’s party. B. To meet his wife at the station. C. To spend time with his parents. D. To attend his daughter’s contest. 34. What was the author worried about on the train? A. His wife’s safety. B. The cold weather. C. The noisy teenagers. D. His daughter’s situation. 35. What can we know about the author from the text? A. He was an impatient man. B. He failed to enter the hall. C. He missed the competition. D. He was surprised by the result. “Ama’s Love Letters” Touches Hearts Across China A short video titled Ama’s Love Letters has gone viral on Chinese social media, touching millions of viewers with its simple yet powerful story of a mother’s love. 36 Although she never went to school and cannot read or write, she has spent years collecting “love letters” — actually drawings and symbols — to express her feelings for her son, who works far away in the city. 37 A bowl of rice means “eat well”, a sun means “be happy”, and a pair of shoes means “come home safely”. Her son, now a young man working in Shenzhen, only discovered these “letters” when he returned home during the Spring Festival. Deeply moved, he shared them online. 38 Netizens described the video as “the most beautiful love letter ever written”. One user wrote, “No fancy words, just pure love. This is what family means.” 39 Many young people said they felt guilty for not calling home often enough and promised to visit their parents more regularly. Experts say the popularity of Ama’s Love Letters reflects a growing public desire to reconnect with traditional family values in a fast-paced modern society. 40 A. Within days, the post received over 10 million likes and comments. B. The video has also sparked discussions about left-behind elderly parents in rural China. C. W: No, but I have read about its author Philip Pullman. M: Well. Can you tell me something about him? W: Well, Pullman was born on October 19th, 1946, in a small town in the UK. His father was a pilot, so the family traveled a lot when Pullman was very young. M: Wow! It was great. W: Unfortunately, his father died in a plane crash in 1953. So his mother remarried in 1957 and then the family moved to Australia. M: That was quite a twist. W: Yes. But there little Pullman discovered two superheroes Superman and Batman, which he liked very much. It was at that time that he made up his mind to write fantasy novels when he grew up. M: So what about his grades? W: He was always a good student in Australia and in 1963 he went to study at university in southwestern England. D 25. C 26. C 27. 根据第二段“Now, researchers say they have improved those findings to come to a more specific conclusion: only children with an older brother exhibit these language difficulties.(现在,研究人员表示他们已改进这些发现,得出了更具体的结论:只有拥有哥哥的儿童才会出现这些语言困难)”可知,只有一个哥哥的孩子学语言更慢。 25. 根据第二段“The study, conducted by a group of researchers in Paris, France, builds upon previous research that had already discovered that having older siblings is associated with poor language development. Now, researchers say they have improved those findings to come to a more specific conclusion: only children with an older brother exhibit these language difficulties.(这项研究由法国巴黎的一组研究人员开展,其研究建立在先前发现的基础上,即有年长的兄弟姐妹与语言发展较差存在关联。现在,研究人员表示他们已改进这些发现,得出了更具体的结论:只有拥有哥哥的儿童才会出现这些语言困难)”可知,第二段介绍了研究得出一个更准确的结论。 26. 词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“The first is that older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would make up for parents potentially being less present than they were for their first child. The second is that older sisters usually compete with their siblings less than older brothers for their parents’ attention.(第一,姐姐通常比哥哥说话更多,这可以弥补父母对该孩童的陪伴可能少于其对头胎孩子的陪伴的不足。第二,姐姐通常比哥哥更少与兄弟姐妹争夺父母的注意力)”和最后一段“As of now, the study’s authors say they can’t say for certain why children with older brothers have a harder time developing language skills.(目前,该研究的作者表示,他们尚无法确切说明为什么有哥哥的孩子在语言发展方面更困难)”可知,研究人员提出了两种原因假设。 根据第六段“The first is that older sisters tend to talk more often than older brothers, which would make up for parents potentially being less present than they were for their first child.(第一点是,姐姐们通常比哥哥们说话更多,这可以弥补父母对该孩童的陪伴可能少于其对头胎孩子的陪伴的不足)”可知,可能造成这种有趣缺点的原因是姐姐比哥哥更常说话。 C Many children try to make their parents proud. C 29. D 30. B 31. 根据第一段中的“Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families, a child’s success is always “on show”. Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person. (许多孩子努力让父母骄傲。但在一些家庭里,孩子的成功总被“展示”。父母想得到别人的赞扬,孩子可能感觉自己像个表演者,而不是一个人。)”可知,第一段提出有些父母把孩子的成功当作炫耀资本这一问题,从而引出下文对孔雀式育儿的介绍。 29. 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“The term “peacock parenting” comes from the idea of being “as proud as a peacock”. Here it means a self-centered style of parenting. A peacock parent may show off a “perfect family” in public, yet criticize the child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations. (“孔雀式育儿”一词源于“像孔雀一样骄傲”的说法。在这里,它指一种以自我为中心的育儿方式。孔雀式父母可能在公共场合炫耀“完美家庭”,但当孩子达不到高期望时,会在私下批评孩子。)”可知,孔雀式育儿主要关注获得公众的认可与赞扬。 30. 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The third is role reversal. Some parents fail to provide proper care and attention, or even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically.(第三种是角色反转。一些父母无法给予适当的照顾和关注,甚至期望孩子在情感或身体上照顾他们。)”可知,角色反转指的是父母依赖孩子获得支持。 31. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Supportive friends, groups, or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing. Clear boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact may be necessary.(支持你的朋友、社群或是专业帮助可以提供原先缺失的关怀。清晰的个人边界也能让关系更安全,如果和父母的接触持续造成伤害,限制接触可能是有必要的。)”可推知,受到孔雀式育儿伤害的人可以建立清晰的个人边界,并寻求合适的外部支持。 D The train gave a high-pitched warning, and the doors closed with a sharp sound. B 33. D 34. D 35. 根据第一段中““Anyone sitting here?” she asked. “No, please sit,” I replied, wishing the train would start moving soon. (“这里有人吗?”她问道,“没有,请坐吧,”我回答道,心里希望火车能尽快开动。)”可知,作者急切地希望火车尽快出发,说明他内心十分焦急不安。 33. 细节理解题。根据第二段中“I was supposed to go home the next week, but a call from my wife completely messed up the plan: Our daughter’s singing competition had been brought forward to that evening. (我原计划下周回家,但妻子打来的电话彻底打乱了计划:我们女儿的歌唱比赛被提前到了当晚。)”可知,作者提前赶回去是为了参加女儿的歌唱比赛。 34. 推理判断题。根据第三段中“As the train stopped at each station, the growing darkness outside seemed to steal any hope I had. I checked my phone again and again, but there was no reply from my wife. (火车在每个车站停靠时,外面越来越深的黑暗似乎夺走了我所有的希望。我反复查看手机,但妻子却没有任何回应。)”可知,作者在火车上反复查看手机却收不到妻子的回复,内心担忧的是女儿比赛的情况。 35. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The doors were locked; I pressed the bell impatiently. (门是锁着的;我不耐烦地按了门铃。)”以及“She made it! Your daughter won first place! (她成功了!你女儿获得了第一名!)”可知,作者赶到时比赛已经开始,门都锁了,说明他错过了比赛的全部进行过程,仅赶上了结果宣布环节。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 “Ama’s Love Letters” Touches Hearts Across China A short video titled Ama’s Love Letters has gone viral on Chinese social media, touching millions of viewers with its simple yet powerful story of a mother’s love. If you think that means she enjoys being 56 the camera, you’re wrong. Mum is the everpresent subject and star of her happy photos while friends and family move in and out as supporting characters. Dad, meanwhile, is crouched(蹲伏) next to a bush, 57 (try) to get the best angle of Mum gazing serenely into the distance. Mum’s 58 (enthusiastic) for documenting family outings used to annoy me as 59 child. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized the error of my ways. Namely: if you don’t capture your best angles regularly, people will forget how attractive you were. Many people wish they had a mum 60 never lets her kids forget that, and I’m grateful that I’ve got 61 (I). I love looking through our family albums(相册) and admiring those photos of Mum next to rose bushes 62 casually leaning against a tree. I love seeing her share photos online, and the way all her friends 63 (instant) rush over to tell her that she is still beautiful. Most of all, I love it when she has extensive proof of the regular, non-eventful life stuff no one else thinks to capture. We often forget 64 (appreciate) those times — and what we 65 (look) like when we were young. 56. behind 57. trying 58. enthusiasm 59. a 60. who/that 61. mine 62. or 63. instantly 64. to appreciate 65. looked 【导语】说明了母亲的爱好是在外出时拍摄大量照片,她始终是镜头中的主角。 短语forget to do sth. 根据空后when we were young可知,发生在过去用一般过去时。 66.
