40. Whole Foods Market promises its team members ______.
A. support for maintaining overall well-being B. full medical coverage for all health needs
C. guaranteed chances to make a global impact D. personal and professional success for everyone
41. Tom, who lives in the UK, has just moved to a new address and needs to update his subscription delivery information. The most direct way is to ______.

◆ Renewing your subscription ◆ Checking your subscription status
◆ Cancelling your subscriptionMissing an issue?
A. call the UK phone number 01233 560607
B. use the “Help” button to submit a request
C. send an email to letters@historyextra.com
D. log into “My Account” and update the address

Five Stages of Brain Change
Stage
Age
Brain Characteristics
Childhood
0-9
The brain grows rapidly. Extra connections are removed to make the brain more efficient.
Adolescence
9-32
Brain connections strengthen and communication between brain regions becomes faster.
Adulthood
32-66
Brain activity becomes steady.
Intelligence and personality remain relatively steady, too.
Early Aging
66-83
White matter gradually weakens. Some brain regions form stronger groups, but they are less connected to other groups.
Late Aging
83+
Connections between brain regions decrease and the brain relies on fewer pathways.
40. Which of the following descriptions about our brains is correct?
A. At 60, white matter is beginning to weaken.
B. At 72, brain regions become less dependent.
C. At 90, distant brain areas get more connected.
D. At 25, brain connections are becoming stronger.

A. call (610) 510-6690
B. write to the Bristol address
C. click the “Help” button on the website
D. send an email to historymagazine@historyextra.com
Sample schedule
Here’s a sample of what a week in this course could look like. Keep in mind that students will progress at varying paces, so this is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience.
41.Why does the writer include the “Sample schedule” in the text?
A. To remind students to follow a fixed learning pace.
B. To show that theory and practice are equally valued.
C. To give readers a general impression of the learning process.
D. To stress the fierce competition among program participants.

The Shimmering State
by Meredith Westgate.
Atria Books, 2021 ($27)
Memoroxin, a personalized pill that replaces memories in people with Alzheimer’s, is being abused as a recreational drug. Disconnected from reality, Lucien and Sophie meet at a “Mem” health recovery center in Los Angeles, where personal psychological traumas, along with foreign memories, can be removed. They feel drawn to each other; have they met before? Like the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind , The Shimmering State explores whether the joys and pains of love can ever be fully erased. Through interconnected relationships, the novel delves into some of the moral dilemmas of a technology that can catalog and edit consciousness.
—Jen Schwartz
Dark and Magical Places: The Neuroscience of Navigation
by Christopher Kemp.
W.W. Norton, 2022 ($26.95) Navigation is one of the most complex cognitive tasks humans engage in daily. In this fascinating dive into the brain, neurobiology researcher Christopher Kemp explores how we orient where we’re going, why we lose our way, and what scientists know about how we do both these things. Kemp’s explanations of concepts such as grid cells are clear and engaging, but the book shines brightest in his entertaining descriptions of his own chronic lostness, as well as in surprisingly moving stories about people who have wandered dangerously off route. Some make it home, but others don’t.
—Tess Joosse
Secret Worlds: The Extraordinary Senses of Animals
by Martin Stevens.
Oxford University Press, 2021 ($25.95)
Ecologist Martin Stevens catalogs animals’ sensory systems and how they exceed our own while informing and challenging our reality as humans. The book has a narrative and inquisitive style that will show examples of the amazing capabilities they allow, from nocturnal dung beetles that orientate by using the Milky Way to sea turtles that navigate currents by reading the earth’s magnetic fields. Secret Worlds is filled with lessons on how different species evolved to perceive the world.
—Jen St.Jude
Once There Were Wolves
by Charlotte McConaghy.
Flatiron Books, 2021 ($27.99)
Australian writer Charlotte McConaghy (author of Migrations ) delivers a thrilling and touching novel about a woman named Inti Flynn and her team of biologists who reintroduce gray wolves into Scotland’s remote Highlands. At first, the wolves seem to thrive, but when a farmer gets hurt, she suspects the man she loves. Her story unfolds as a social and scientific meditation on the consequences of influencing ecosystems, while reminding us that humans and animals alike can break our hearts.

A. support for maintaining overall well-being B. full medical coverage for all health needs

定位原文第一段 “Whole Foods Market is committed to the wellbeing of our team members. From comprehensive health benefits to wellness programs, we ensure you the resources to live a healthy, balanced life”。 D “personal and professional success for everyone” 无文本支撑。

◆ Renewing your subscription ◆ Checking your subscription status
◆ Cancelling your subscriptionMissing an issue?
A. call the UK phone number 01233 560607
B. use the “Help” button to submit a request
C. send an email to letters@historyextra.com
D. log into “My Account” and update the address
定位 Subscriptions 板块 “you can manage many common requests in My Account, including: Updating your address”。 根据Subscriptions部分“If you are a subscriber, you can manage many common requests in My Account, including: Updating your address (如果您是订阅者,可以在“我的账户”中处理许多常见请求,包括更新地址)”可知,最直接的方式是登录“我的账户”更新地址。

41. If the customer decided to return the hand soap on June 15, 2025, he ________.
A. could expect a full refund from the store
B. would be asked to provide proof of payment
C. should remember to repackage the product
D. would not be allowed to make an exchange
根据表格中第一列第三栏中“Returns are allowed with the original sales receipt(凭原始销售收据方可办理退货)”及“Any item may be returned for an exchange or refund within 14 days of purchase, provided it is in its original packaging. After this period, only exchanges are accepted.(凡在购买后14天内,且商品保留原包装的情况下,均可办理退换货。

42. If you are in the US and have a comment about an article in the magazine, you should ______.
A. call (610) 510-6690
B. write to the Bristol address
C. click the “Help” button on the website
D. send an email to historymagazine@historyextra.com
All other inquiries (magazine, website, apps, feedback)部分“If you have comments, questions or feedback about our magazine, website or apps, we would love to hear from you.

根据 “invent and model your own designs...transform them into tactile prints” 可知,想把数字创意变成实物的学生会感兴趣,故选 B。
原文提示 “This is meant to serve as an outline of key materials and the overall experience;students will progress at varying paces”。

POETIC FORCES OF NATURE
The Rialto Nature and Place Poetry Competition 2026 is inviting entries.
This year’s competition for nature poetry will be judged by Ian McMillan.
The competition is being run by The Rialto poetry journal in association with Birdlife International, Cambridge Conservation Initiative and The University of Leeds Poetry Center.
Poems may be in any style or form, on any aspect of nature and place.
There is a first prize of £1,000 and second and third prizes of £500 and £250.
Poems may be up to 40 lines, and must be original and unpublished.
Writers may enter up to six poems in one submission. The entry fee for the first poem in a submission is £7, and £4 for any subsequent poems in the same submission.
The closing date is 1 June 2026.
Website: www.therialto.co.uk/pages/nature-poetry-competition/
40. For The Rialto Nature and Place Poetry Competition 2026, if a writer submits 5 poems in one submission, the entry fee will be _______.
A. £7. B. £20. C. £23. D. £35.
The Rialto Nature and Place Poetry Competition 2026部分“Writers may enter up to six poems in one submission. The entry fee for the first poem in a submission is £7, and £4 for any subsequent poems in the same submission.( 参赛者单次投稿最多可提交六首诗歌。

—Amy Brady
5.What can we infer from the introduction of The Shimmering State?
A.Memoroxin, which cures Alzheimer’s, is a recreational drug.
B.Lucien and Sophie feel drawn to each other for foreign memories.
C.The book suggests the joys and pains of love should be completely removed.
D.Editing consciousness by a technology may bring about some moral problems.
6.It can be learned from the whole passage that__________.
A.among the four books, only Dark and Magical Places touches upon the topic of navigation
B.the heroine in Once There Were Wolves doesn’t believe the farmer is hurt by wolves
C.the highlights of Dark and Magical Places are Kemp’s explanations of some concepts
D.McConaghy’s novel merely focuses on the social and scientific impact on the ecosystems
7.If Bob is interested in science and wants to gain more insight into animals’ perception of the world, which of the books should be recommended?
A.The Shimmering State B.Dark and Magical Places
C.Secret Worlds D.Once There Were Wolves

Top Apps For Climate Activists
The world population is at 7 billion and it’s predicted that by the end of this year there will be one smartphone for every five people in the world. That’s a lot of phones and a lot of information literally at our fingertips.
Information is constantly changing and those of us working hard to protect the environment for ourselves and future generations need to have access to up-to-date material. Being a climate change activist can be time consuming. But…There’s an app (or ten) for that! The number of apps out there is staggering.
With these apps you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to stay in the know when it comes to your health, and the health of the environment.
Carbon Emissions Calculator for Air Travel
(iOS-Free) This app allows passengers to estimate the carbon emissions attributed to their air travel. It is simple to use-just select your origin and destination airports, specify the class of travel and number of passengers. View the carbon footprint and the distance traveled for your trip.
Fooducate ( iOS and Android- $ 4. 99 ) This app empowers food shoppers everywhere to make healthy, informed decisions while at the supermarket. Scan your food and Fooducate generates a letter grade ( A, B, C, or D) for each product scanned, along with brief explanations and warnings about its nutrients and ingredients. There is also an option to enter the bar code manually. The app will recommend minimally processed, real foods which are naturally rich in nutrients and antioxidants.
Locavore (iOS and Android-Free) If you’re looking for the closest farmers market selling your favorite in season produce, then Locavore is the app for you. Locavore is a great app for those searching for local, in season, organic foods in your area. The app has one-click access to thousands of healthy, seasonal recipes and other information that can be shared with your friends and family. I like how the app not only lets you know which fruits and veggies are in season-it also lets you know how long they’ll be in season.
Zimride (iOS and Android-Free) Ridesharing apps are all the rage. Zimride is a new spin on ridesharing, using social networks to enable real connections. Once you set up a profile you are able to book a ride in your area, or post a ride of your own. Drivers can charge for rides and Zimride doesn’t take a cut. Rides seem to be reasonably priced and since profiles are linked with Facebook it’s easy to check out your potential ride companions.
