In Gansu province, three generations of workers have worked hard to stop desertification.
Babusha, a big sand dune (沙丘) at the edge (边缘) of the Tengger Desert, was a big cause of sandstorms in the 1980s. The desert destroyed farmland and villages in its south, and affected more than 30,000 people. However, with the effort of “the six old men” and their children and grandchildren, now, a green belt, which is 10 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide, has been built.
This project is time-consuming. Guo Chaoming and five other villagers first had the idea of renting 5,000 hectares (公顷) of sandy land to plant trees in 1981. Their original goal was to prevent sandstorms from destroying their crops. At the time, Guo, the oldest of the six, was already 61, while Zhang Runyuan, the youngest, was not yet 50.
At first, they planted 667 hectares of saplings (幼苗). However, after the first sandstorm, no more than 30 percent survived. After countless failures, they successfully thought of the idea of burying wheat straw (埋麦秸) around trees to hold the sand.
Planting trees in the desert is difficult, but taking care of them was even more challenging. To protect the trees, they chose to live there for years, in a simple shelter they made from wooden poles and straw (木杆和稻草). They used bricks (砖头) to support a cooking pot (灶台), drank boiled water and ate steamed buns when hungry.
In the eyes of the six men, the Babusha forest farm became their most valuable possession. Even in the 1990s, when they lacked money, they didn’t cut down a single tree or grass to sell. Time passed by and four of the six passed away. But their children and grandchildren took up the torch and continued their work.
Now, the desert has changed into grassland and forest. The amount of plants has increased from less than 3% to more than 75%. In 2019, “the six old men” and their families were honored “Model of the Times” and “Most Beautiful Fighters” for their hard work.
16. In paragraph 1, “three generations of workers” refers to ________.

18. How did the six old men manage to increase the survival rate (比率) of saplings in the desert?
A. By planting fewer saplings.
B. By taking good care of saplings and watering them several times a day.
C. By keeping testing and failing several times.
D. By burying wheat straw to hold the sand.

On June 23, the Chinese actress Huo Siyan posted a video on Xiaohongshu. She shared how she and her husband discovered an injured beagle (比格犬) by the roadside. It turned out that the poor dog had come from a lab. The couple took her home and named her Pearl.
Their story has drawn public attention to animals used in lab testing. Animals have long played an important role in scientific studies. In the 1880s, Louis Pasteur conducted experiments on sheep and showed the world that some diseases are caused by germs. In the 1970s, treatments for a serious skin disease were used on animals before being given to humans. In 1974, Rudolf Jaenisch put DNA from a virus into mice. Genetic research grew quickly after that.
Today, animal testing is still required for many products. From cosmetics (化妆品) to medicines, new chemicals are often tested on animals first. It is said that more than 115 million animals are used in experiments every year. Lab testing on animals is not like taking your pet to the vet. Lab animals are harmed in many ways. Some tests even require the animal to die. That’s the sad but true situation for millions of mice, rabbits, dogs and other animals.
Back in the 17th century, people had different opinions about animal testing. Many people disliked it. They believed that animals should not be harmed for humanity’s sake. In recent years, more and more people are saying “no” to animal research. Some countries have banned (禁止) the testing of certain products on animals. Scientists have been working to offer non-animal methods. For example, they have created 3D chips (芯片) from human cells. These chips work like tiny human organs. They are used to find out how human systems respond to drugs. Some scientists remove cells from a cancer patient’s tumor. These cells are then used to test different treatments. Researchers also make use of computer models. They can predict how a medicine might affect us. These methods help improve the understanding and treatment of the human body. They are also faster and cheaper than animal testing. Old habits die hard. But non-animal methods will one day replace experiments on animals. This will be a good thing not just for animals, but for human health in general.
21. What led to the increased public attention on the issue of animal testing?
A. The development of 3D chips from human cells.
B. Huo Siyan’s discovery of an injured beagle from a lab.
C. The banning of animal testing in certain countries.
D. The use of computer models to predict drug effects.
22. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. People’s attention has been drawn to the animals used in lab testing.
B. Animal testing should be stopped immediately.
C. The negative effects of animal testing.
D. Animal testing has had an important impact on scientific progress.
23. What is the current status of animal testing according to the passage?
A. It has been completely banned worldwide.
B. It is still required for many products, including cosmetics and medicines.
C. It has been replaced by non-animal methods.
D. It is only conducted for scientific research, not for product testing.
24. What is the structure of the passage?
A. ①→②→③④ B. ①→②③→④ C. ①→②→③→④ D. ①②→③④
25. What is the author’s attitude on the future of non-animal testing methods?
A. They will never replace animal testing.
B. They will eventually replace animal testing and benefit both animals and human health.
C. They are too expensive and time-consuming to be practical.
D. They are not as effective as traditional animal testing methods.

46. 例文:
Recently, some social media platform (社交媒体平台) began to report the fact that some schools are limiting their students during the 10-minute break between classes. As a reporter from the School Daily, I think the reason why some schools ban students from leaving the classroom during the break time is that schools are worried about students’ safety. They are afraid that some students may hurt themselves while chasing in high speed.
In my opinion, schools should set students free by allowing them to do some beneficial activities as the break plays an important role in students’ physical and mental health. Take myself as an example, I prefer to hang out with some close friends and spend most of the time socializing with them, which helps me gain a sense of belonging within school. Meanwhile, it provides an outlet for me to express myself and seek emotional support from friends. What’s more, it is also a good choice to do some exercise during the break time. I show great interest in skipping as it helps to refresh my mind after a long periods of classes. Taking a ten-minute break enables me to step away from my studies, clear my thoughts and prepare myself for the next class.
All in all, 10-minute breaks are of great value. School should make better use of it for the benefit of students’ well-being and happiness.
