根据第二段“Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. (据《华盛顿邮报》报道,Shanya的灵感来自2022年夏天她所在社区的一家餐馆被大火烧毁。)”以及她所说的“I had never really experienced something like that before (我以前从未真正经历过这样的事情)”可知,一场破坏性的火灾激发了她开发火灾探测系统的动机。
25.细节理解题。根据第四段“With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning.(该设备利用热成像相机与微型计算机树莓派,能检测到热源无人看管十分钟的情况,并发送短信警告。)”
根据第四段“Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. (制作原型很困难,最难的部分是编程。“我有两个设计,第一个设计完全失败了,”她说。)”可知,Shanya的发明过程并不顺利,经历了失败和困难,因此用“Rough(艰难的)”来描述最为恰当。
27.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.

根据文章第二段首句“Dry-farmed plants take moisture (水分) stored in the ground, rather than irrigating from above.(旱地耕种的作物利用地里储存的水分,而不是从上方灌溉。)”
根据第四段的“In fact, dry-farming is so game-changing for vineyards (葡萄园) that some areas in Europe forbid irrigating wine grapes, in order to sweeten them.(事实上,旱地耕作对葡萄园造成了巨大改变,以至于欧洲一些地区禁止灌溉酿酒葡萄,为了甜化葡萄。)”
根据第五段的“In the US, it dates back thousands of years among indigenous peoples — proving once again that indigenous knowledge is the key to protecting the planet.(在美国,它可追溯至数千年前的土著民族——再次证明本土知识是保护地球的关键。)”
根据最后一段的“Dry-farming is not just farming — it’s our way of life,” said Michael Kotutwa Johnson, an Indigenous Resiliency specialist at the University of Arizona and member of the Hopi Tribe. “You get to really learn what the environment gives you, and you learn to reward.

根据第一段“Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters.(走到离城市鸽子一米以内,它可能都懒得动。可若是在林间靠近野生鸟类,你能走到十米之内就算幸运了。)”可知,作者描述了城市鸟类比野生鸟类警惕性更低、行为更不谨慎的现象。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中“What the team found was a similar global pattern — urbanization changes behavior in similar ways across very different places.(团队发现了一个类似的全球模式——城市化在截然不同的地区以相似的方式改变着动物的行为)”可知,Burkhard团队发现城市动物在不同区域表现出相似的行为特征。
根据第四段中“That movement maintains gene flow, the genetic exchange that keeps isolated city animals from drifting further from their rural counterparts.(这种迁移维持了基因流动,即遗传交换,防止孤立的城市动物与野外同类进一步drifting)”可知,基因交流是为了避免城市动物与野外同类在基因上变得不同,drifting在此意为“变得分离、分化”。
综合全文,结合第一段“Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters. Scientists have noticed that gap for years among individual species living in certain cities. What no one had tested was whether it held worldwide — across different continents, species, and animal classes.(走到离城市鸽子一米以内,它可能都懒得动。可若是在林间靠近野生鸟类,你能走到十米之内就算幸运了。科学家们多年来一直注意到生活在某些城市中的个别物种之间存在这种差异。但此前无人测试过这一现象是否具有全球性——即是否存在于不同大陆、不同物种和不同动物类别之间。)”可知,文章核心是一项全球研究证实城市动物因城市化影响普遍变得更勇敢大胆,B项“城市动物在人类面前越来越大胆”准确概括了文章主旨。

One possible version:
Then I tried to explain to them the idea behind our decision. I told them the true Christmas spirit and the touching moments when strangers and neighbors helped our family out in previous Christmas seasons. I said, “Now it’s our turn to give.” To my relief, their upset was replaced with interest. When I told them we’d help the Jones family, their faces lit up. I asked what gifts they hoped to offer. After a moment of thought, Jimmy replied, “Warm jeans and hats, so they won’t feel cold.” Sally nodded and added, “And some snacks too!” Their excitement returned, even stronger than before. We went shopping together, and the kids carefully chose every item.
Not wanting the family to feel embarrassed, we decided to give the gifts in secret. Then, on Christmas morning before sunrise, we left for their house carrying bags of gifts. Upon arrival, we quietly placed the bags at their door with a Christmas card. We rang the bell, hid behind the nearby bushes and watched as they found the gifts — their smiles said it all. Our kids were thrilled, whispering and giggling all the way home. This Christmas turned out special. We took delight in bringing surprises to others instead of merely chasing our own desires.

W: Hey Chris, I love your suit. You look so smart in it.

M: Banana.
【Text6】
W: Hi George, congratulations on your promotion.
M: Thank you. News spreads quickly.

W: Oh, don’t mention it. Well, I have to get back to my office right now. We’ll talk later.
【Text7】
W: Hi Sam. Are you enjoying university?
M: Yes, the second year is much better than freshman year. I made a new group of friends and joined several clubs.
W: That’s great to hear. What’s your major, by the way?
M: Computer science, but I’m also teaching myself business management in French.
W: Oh, that must keep you busy.
M: Yes, the workload is heavy, but I enjoy what I’m studying.

M: Hi Jane, you are planning to spend your holiday in San Francisco. I’m from the city. Need any advice?
W: Well, to be frank, I’m worried about getting lost there. GPS service is no stranger to me, but the feeling of being alone in a big city upsets me.
M: You can take a map with you at all times, just in case your phone’s battery dies in the middle of the street. Tourist maps are sold everywhere in popular visiting sites. You should find one easily.
W: Okay, I hope it wouldn’t be very troublesome to carry a map everywhere.
M: Transportation won’t be a problem. There are buses and taxis all around, but do you want to rent a bike? I know that San Francisco has a lot of facilities and policies which promote bikes.
W: Oh, I can ride bikes quite smoothly.
M: Then this is an option you should really consider. Although it takes longer, it’s cheap and safe.
W: Great, I will take your advice. Thanks.

Passage B
Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge(TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage in all young people,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM(science, technology, engineering and maths) fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
24.What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A.Her experience of a destructive fire.
B.Her desire to win the science award.
C.Her interest in computer programming.
D.Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
25.What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?
A.It consists of two parts that are easier to conduct.
B.It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C.It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D.It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
26.Which of the following can best describe Shanya’s inventing work?
A.Thrilling. B.Smooth. C.Supported. D.Rough.
27.What’s the best title for this article?
A.Shanya Gill inspires the discriminated
B.Fire detection system is upgraded
C.TFSJIC ends with glory and promise
D.Middle schooler stands out in TFSJIC
Passage C
Water shortages, rising temperatures, and droughts caused by climate change have an immense impact on agriculture — and today’s farmers are desperate to find solutions. In the western United States, some are turning to dry-farming, a form of agriculture that doesn’t require irrigation.
Dry-farmed plants take moisture (水分) stored in the ground, rather than irrigating from above. All farmers need is a wet, rainy season, followed by a dry growing season, as well as some methods like placing a layer of mulch (覆盖物) on top of soil to keep moisture, spacing plants more widely, and planting earlier in the season.
According to the Dry Farming Institute, “Dry-farming is a low-input, place-based approach to producing crops within the constraints of your climate.” As the institute defines it, “A dry-farmed crop is irrigated once or not at all.”
Dry-farming is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can save farmers thousands of liters in water every season — and help maintain a climate-resilient business. And the best part? Dry-farmed produce is praised for tasting better than irrigated crops, and crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, squash, corn, watermelon and even grapes, are excellent candidates for dry-farming. In fact, dry-farming is so game-changing for vineyards (葡萄园) that some areas in Europe forbid irrigating wine grapes, in order to sweeten them.
Dry-farming is a long-held standard practice, from olive groves in the Mediterranean (地中海) to melon fields in Botswana. In the US, it dates back thousands of years among indigenous peoples — proving once again that indigenous knowledge is the key to protecting the planet.
“Dry-farming is not just farming — it’s our way of life,” said Michael Kotutwa Johnson, an Indigenous Resiliency specialist at the University of Arizona and member of the Hopi Tribe. “You get to really learn what the environment gives you, and you learn to reward. It’s a beautiful thing, and it’s something that needs to be cherished.”
28.What is a key feature of dry-farming?
A.It uses natural underground wetness.
B.It waters crops often in dry seasons.
C.It has been proved suitable for most crops.
D.It demands thick mulch all the year round.
29.Why do some European areas ban irrigation for wine grapes?
A.To cut the cost of water supply. B.To improve grapes’ pleasant flavor.
C.To popularize local dry-farming. D.To limit excessive grape planting.
30.What can we infer about dry-farming?
A.It is a newly created farming skill.
B.It works equally for all farmlands.
C.It costs much more labor and money.
D.It carries ancient native eco-wisdom.
31.How does Johnson feel about dry-farming?
A.It requires modern technology. B.It is complex for most farmers.
C.It is a tradition worth preserving. D.It works as a temporary solution.
Passage D
Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters. Scientists have noticed that gap for years among individual species living in certain cities. What no one had tested was whether it held worldwide — across different continents, species, and animal classes.
A new analysis of 80 studies just asked that question, and the answer was more consistent than researchers expected. A team led by Dr Tracy Burkhard, an assistant professor of biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, pulled together findings from 80 separate field studies of urban and rural animals. It turns out that the distinction between the old city mouse and country mouse is a global one.
Urban animals came out, on average, more risk positive or more daring than their rural counterparts (对照) in every region the researchers tested. What the team found was a similar global pattern — urbanization changes behavior in similar ways across very different places. Urban animals defended territory more aggressively, investigated new objects more readily, and moved through space more actively than their rural counterparts. The same held true across mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and the limited insect data — wherever populations could be compared at all.
City planners, the researchers pointed out, will have to start treating animal behavior as part of the design problem. Connected green spaces, including parks, planted strips, and wildlife corridors, help urban animals mix with rural ones. That movement maintains gene flow, the genetic exchange that keeps isolated city animals from drifting further from their rural counterparts.
What this study adds is global confirmation that cities appear to be pushing wild behavior in the same direction almost everywhere. How that pressure works — whether through natural selection, individual learning, or which animals survive urban life at all — is still being worked out.

Read the following material and, based on its content and the given paragraph beginnings, continue writing two more paragraphs to form a complete short essay.
Passage:
When Christmas was approaching, I somehow thought about the holiday spirit and the touching moments in my life. Over the past few holidays, many people have shown my family, especially my kids, kindness.
For example, one Christmas, when my family was on the bus, my son Jimmy felt quite sick. When we got off at one stop, he threw up. But I didn’t have any tissues to clean the dirt. Just then, a lady offered me lots of tissues. And one Christmas, my little daughter Sally was ill and some neighbors visited us and brought her snacks and toys. Surely, our kids received nice things not only from such people but also from us. Each Christmas, my husband and I would give them many great gifts. So I was inspired to encourage my kids to show the spirit of Christmas — “giving”.
I told my husband, “Let’s do something different this year. I’m tired of all the efforts to try to find the best gifts for our kids. They’re old enough to learn more about the true meaning of giving during the holiday. Don’t you think so?” “Uh, sure, I guess so,” he replied, looking puzzled.
Maybe we shouldn’t limit our gift-giving to our own kids. We could buy our kids’ good friends — the Jones’ kids — some clothes. I explained the Jones family had such a hard year. My husband agreed and suggested getting our kids involved as well.
Before I could tell them our idea, Jimmy and Sally excitedly told me what they wanted for Christmas and showed me a list. Not wanting to disappoint them, I took a deep breath and told them they wouldn’t get as much this year because we were going to help a needy family. Unsurprisingly, the joy on their faces disappeared immediately.
