【详解】 根据第一段中的“observing how nature solved problems”和“When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making”和第二段中的“John went back to observing nature and asking questions”以及第二段中的两个问题可以看出,John是一个喜欢刨根问底、喜欢探索的人。故选C。
【详解】 根据第三段中的“The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge(污泥)... placed them in the tanks”可知,John 修建水箱是为了清理污泥中的有害物质,为此,他在水箱里放了一些动植物。第四段中的“all that was left was pure water”表明了将污泥放入水箱之后的变化。
【详解】 上文讲到了John的发明成功了,根据第五段的中心句“Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs”可知,多年来,John做了很多重大的工作。
4. 答案:A
【详解】 本文主要围绕John的疑问“A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived... if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making”展开,即一条肮脏的溪流在穿过植物和流过微生物居住的岩石后,往往会变得清澈,这个过程是否可以用来清理人们制造的脏乱呢?正是在这个疑问的指引下,John发明了生态设计,因此,John发明的根源就在于自然的自我修复能力,且最后一段中的“Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair”也印证了John的工作依据就在于自我修复这一理念。故选A。
5. 答案:A
通过倒数第二段的“Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.” 故选A。
【详解】 根据上文“Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common? There’s one answer. ”文章的主旨从标题可知重点词是tricks和patience可知,结合“交通堵塞、排长队和等待假期”这些情况可知都需要耐心。故G选项“在这些情况下,我们都需要一点额外的耐心”符合语境,故选G。
7. 答案:E
【命题意图】考查句际顺承并列关系。
【详解】 根据上文“Thankfulness has a lot of benefits: Research shows it makes us happier, less stressed and even more optimistic.可知本段讲感恩有很多好处,可知空格处继续说明感恩的好处。E选项中It指代上文Thankfulness。故E选项“它还可以帮助我们练习更多的耐心”符合语境,故选E。
8. 答案:B
【命题意图】考查句际总分关系。
【详解】 考查句际总分关系。根据上文“And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. (我们养成等待习惯的唯一方法就是练习)”以及后文“Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. (把你最喜欢的节目推迟到周末再看,或者多等10分钟再去吃蛋糕)”可知,后文列举的事情都是日常的小事,说明要从小事开始练习等待,故B选项“从小任务开始”符合语境,故选B。
9. 答案:C
【命题意图】考查段落主旨。
【详解】 根据“when we experience something outside of our comfort zone, we get impatient about the circumstances. ”可知不在舒适区就会不耐烦,所以告诉读者如何改变这种情况:即接受并适应不舒服的状态。结合前文的小标题都是祈使句可知,本段的主旨与接受不舒适相关,C选项中uncomfortable对应后文comfortable。故C选项“接受不舒服”符合语境,故选C。
10. 答案:F
【命题意图】考查承上启下。
【详解】 后文“You’ll then gradually become more patient. (然后你会逐渐变得更有耐心)”表明的是一种结果,前文应该是说某种条件,本段主要说明的是不舒服的状态,故F选项“这仅仅是不舒服,而不是无法忍受”符合语境,故选F。

6.答案:A

When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.
After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.
The task John set for himself was to remove harmful substances from some sludge (污泥). First, he constructed a series of clear fiberglass tanks connected to each other. Then he went around to local ponds and streams and brought back some plants and animals. He placed them in the tanks and waited. Little by little, these different kinds of life got used to one another and formed their own ecosystem. After a few weeks, John added the sludge.
He was amazed at the results. The plants and animals in the eco-machine took the sludge as food and began to eat it! Within weeks, it had all been digested, and all that was left was pure water.
Over the years, John has taken on many big jobs. He developed a greenhouse-like facility that treated sewage (污水) from 1,600 homes in South Burlington. He also designed an eco-machine to clean canal water in Fuzhou, a city in southeast China.
“Ecological design” is the name John gives to what he does. “Life on Earth is kind of a box of spare parts for the inventor,” he says. “You put organisms in new relationships and observe what’s happening. Then you let these new systems develop their own ways to self-repair.”

Tricks to Becoming a Patient Person
Here’s a riddle: What do traffic jams, long lines and waiting for a vacation to start all have in common? There is one answer. 6 .
In the Digital Age, we’re used to having what we need immediately and right at our fingertips. However, research suggests that if we practiced patience, we’d be a whole lot better off. Here are several tricks.

Instant gratification (满足) may seem like the most “feel good” option at the time, but psychological research suggests waiting for things actually makes us happier in the long run. And the only way for us to get into the habit of waiting is to practice. 8 . Put off watching your favorite show until the weekend or wait 10 extra minutes before going for that cake. You’ll soon find that the more patience you practice, the more you start to apply it to other, more annoying situations.
● 9 .

He Zehui was an outstanding Chinese nuclear physicist who made great contributions to the development of nuclear physics in China. Her remarkable scientific achievements and pioneering work have left a lasting and profound influence on the field, making her a respected figure in the scientific community.
Born on March 5, 1914, in Suzhou, He Zehui came from a family with a long tradition of scientific achievements. She began her academic journey at Tsinghua University, where the department head held a common prejudice at that time and tried to discourage all female students from pursuing a career in physics. However, He Zehui remained determined. In 1936, she graduated top of her class, which consisted of 10 students including two other women. Later, she went to study at Germany’s prestigious Technical University of Berlin, where she excelled as the top student in her class—even outperforming her future husband Qian Sanqiang, who would also go on to become an accomplished physicist.
In 1948, He Zehui and her husband returned to China with great enthusiasm to contribute their expertise to their motherland’s scientific development. They were entrusted with the crucial task of developing an atomic bomb, which they successfully accomplished through years of hard work. Besides her research on nuclear weapons, He Zehui led the Neutron Physics Research Office and played a key role in building China’s first nuclear reactor and cyclotron(回旋加速器). Their scientific work was closely linked with China’s national development, following the valuable advice of the Joliot-Curies: “Serve science, but science must serve the people.” Under her careful guidance, generations of young researchers grew into key figures in China’s nuclear and space science fields.
He Zehui passed away in June 2011, having continued to work full-time until her later years with unshakable dedication. She received many honors throughout her career, including being elected to the esteemed Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980. Michael Bloomberg, an American independent politician and businessman, has a net worth of over $40 billion, making him one of the wealthiest individuals in the world. What set him apart was his being a philanthropist (慈善家), who was the largest individual donor in the United States in 2024.
Michael Bloomberg applies the same careful method to giving away money as he used to build his huge fortune. Over the years, he gained great wealth by providing exact and useful financial information to the financial services industry. So far, he has donated more than $21 billion to a wide range of different causes, which include addressing climate change, improving education, and supporting the arts.
According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Bloomberg was named the largest individual donor in 2024, and he had held the same important title in 2023 too. In 2023 alone, he gave an impressive 3.7 billion to various charitable projects. Among his important gifts, there was 1 billion donated to his old school, Johns Hopkins University. The money was used to make medical school free for most students and to increase financial help for those studying nursing and public health. He also gave $600 million to improve medical-school funds at four historically Black colleges and universities. Earlier in 2024, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced plans to support the United States’ promises under the Paris Agreement, which came after the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the international deal.
A key part of his philanthropic strategy is using data to find problems, aim at effective solutions, and measure progress clearly. Many of his projects focus on cities, drawing on his valuable experience as New York City’s mayor and his work with mayors from around the world. As Bloomberg said in 2018: “Data doesn’t give all answers—that needs creativity—but data keeps our thinking connected to reality when political debate ignores facts.”
5. What is one of the causes that Bloomberg’s donations support?
A. Addressing climate change. B. Funding political campaigns.
C. Expanding business operations. D. Building new financial institutions.
6. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. Bloomberg’s incredible donations in two years.
B. Bloomberg announced plans to support the United States.
C. Black colleges and universities need more medical-school funds.
D. Johns Hopkins University received the largest donation in history.
7. Why does Bloomberg focus on using data in his philanthropic work?
A. Because data can replace creativity in solving problems.
B. Because political debates often rely on data for support.
C. Because he believes data helps connect thinking to reality.
D. Because his business experience taught him to ignore facts.
8. What would be the best title for the passage?
