Paragraph 1:
I rushed out of the house, waving my hands.
"What are you doing out in this weather?"I asked as we
hugged.Esther said she called my office and knew I
wasn't working there anymore,so she came to see me.I
gave her a warm welcome and led her into my room.
Upon arriving,she told me urgently,"Hearing
the news that you were fired from the work,I
felt greatly worried.I know you are raising a big
family and bearing a large life financial pressure.
So I come here and give the gifts for you and
Kristil. She said as she kissed me on the cheek.
While saying, she handed me a big package and a
Christmas card.
Paragraph 2:
When I opened the envelope, inside I found some
money and a note.Into the package placed a doll and a
large envelope.I tore the envelope carefully and hundred-
dollar bills poured onto the floor.Tears of gratitude pud-
dled in my eyes as I picked up the precious gift, which
could help me get through the tough time and buy the
Christmas tree that I promised to give my daughter.
Feeling gratitude,I hugged Esther tightly and thanked
her sincerely.

摆姿势来让Vinnie做雕像。根据倒数第三段
中的“Vinnie glanced around and noted the
size of his office.'I work quickly,'she said.
Her voice was soft but confident as she point-
ed to the corner near the windows.'If I were
to bring my clay here and work for three
hours every afternoon,I could complete most
of the project while you are at your desk..'”

How to Be a Good Learner?
As we all know, learning methods are very
important to every student.Usually a good
learner gets twice the result with half the effort.
Now I'd like to share my opinions about learning
methods with you.
Firstly,to be a good learner,you should have
a good study plan and you have to sum up what
you have learned often.Secondly, you can solve
problems with the help of reference books such as
a dictionary. And you ought to seize every chance
to learn and make use of all kinds of learning re-
sources. For example, you can ask teachers or
your classmates for help when you meet with
some difficulties. Finally,it would be a good idea
if you try to preview your new lessons, listen to
the teachers carefully in class and go over the old
lessons on time. There are other methods that
might help you with your study, but remember
that diligence and good methods are the key to
success.

Challenging work that requires lots of analytical thinking, planning and other
managerial skills might help your brain stay sharp as you age,a study published Wednesday
in the journal Neurology suggests.
Researchers from the University of Leipzig in Germany gathered more than 1,000
皇
retired workers who were over age 75 and assessed the volunteers'memory and thinking
skills through a battery of tests. Then, for eight years, the scientists asked the same group
型
to come back to the lab every 18 months to take the same sorts of tests.
Those who had held mentally stimulating ()demanding jobs before retirement
tended to do the best on the tests. And they tended to lose cognitive (function at a
much slower rate than those with the least mentally challenging jobs. The results held true
even after the scientists accounted for the participants'overall health status.
"This works just like physical exercise,"says Francisca Then, who led the study.
恝
"After a long run,you may feel like you're in pain, you may feel tired. But it makes you fit.
After a long day at work-sure,you will feel tired, but it can help your brain stay healthy.
It's not just corporate jobs,or even paid work that can help keep your brain fit. Then
points out.A waiter's job,for example,that requires multitasking,teamwork and decision-
making could be just as stimulating as any high-level office work. And "running a family
荪
household requires high-level planning and coordinating(协调),”she says.“You have to
organize the activities of the children and take care of the bills and groceries."
Of course, our brains can decline as we grow older for lots of reasons-including other
environmental influences or genetic factors.Still, continuing to challenge yourself mentally
and keeping your mind busy can only help.

"They tell me that you'd like to make a statue()of me-is that correct,Miss
Vinnie Ream?”
The deep, gentle voice helped calm the nervous girl.Asking a favor of the President
of the United States was no casual matter, especially for a seventeen-year-old girl.
"Yes,sir,"she replied, her dark eyes meeting his."I wouldn't have dared to ask
you,but my teacher,Mr.Mills, says I am ready.I plan to make it in an admirable
manner.”
President Lincoln smiled."Painters,sculptors-they've all tried to make the best of
this ordinary face, but I'm afraid there's not much hope. What did you have in mind,Miss
Ream?A bust(半身像)?”
Before Vinnie could say yes,the President hurried on,a shade of apology in his voice.
"Of course-I shouldn't have asked.A full-length pose would be much too big a project for
a young woman your size."
Vinnie's face turned red.She realized she looked like a child, with her tiny figure.
"Small does not mean weak, sir,"she defended herself."I was born in the country of
Wisconsin.I've driven teams of horses and carried water.Making a full-length clay()
figure would not exhaust my strength-and that is what I intend to do!"
The President's eyes, brightened at her show of spirit."Sorry, madam,I have
underestimated you as I didn't know your background."
But his smile faded as he rubbed his beard with bony fingers,in thought."Miss
Ream,"he sighed,"I'd like to let you do it,but as you know,we are in the middle of a
war.How could I possibly take the time to pose for a sculpture now?I hardly have a
minute to myself..”
Vinnie glanced around and noted the size of his office."I work quickly,"she said. Her
voice was soft but confident as she pointed to the corner near the windows."If I were to
bring my clay here and work for three hours every afternoon,I could complete most of the
project while you are at your desk.
The President seemed to consider her idea seriously. He got up and shook Vinnie's
hand warmly,"I've heard that you are a talented young woman, and I have found you
charming and intelligent as well.I cannot make my decision immediately, but you will hear
from me soon.”
The very next day,Vinnie received an invitation from the President.

I have a special place in my heart for libraries.I have for as long as I can remember.I
was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child.
Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties,I lived out
adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old.It was a dream
job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added
meaning in my life.I had several children and books were our main source (of
entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids

I always read, using different voices,as though I were acting out the stories with my
voice and they loved it!It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them
with the wonderment of books.
Now,I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the
excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.
As a novelist,I've found a new relationship with libraries.I encourage readers to go to
their local library when they can't afford to purchase a book.I see libraries as a safe haven
(for readers and writers,a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book.
Libraries,in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为)and I think all writers

Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but
researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine,an expert on mathematics development in young children at
the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later
develop better spatial skills.Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition
(after controlling for differences in parents'income, education and the amount of
parent talk,Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday
activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of
age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
"The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not,on
tasks that assessed their ability to rotate (and translate shapes,"Levine said in a
statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and
about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time.Higher-income
parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls
who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more
complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and
were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.

A lot of people may feel puzzled about viewing art,for it is generally thought to be too
abstract and professional.36 Try these tips next time you're viewing art and see if you
can transform your experience.
Spend time with art.If you only take a moment to consider a work of art, you'll only
generate a moment's opinion.37 Art lets you put life on pause. That's one of its
greatest aspects.Even if it's just for a few moments, stop worrying about what you need to
do next or where you need to be and really dive into the artwork.
Determine the basics. When you're first encountering an artwork, identify the basic
information about it.If it's a painting, see if you can figure out the type of paint used.
When possible, identify the artist, when they created it,and whether it is a still life or a
landscape.38
Recognize your feelings.Recognize your feelings as you first view the art.39 Is it
natural and unintentional? How does it affect your feelings? This subjective (
response is a more immediate reaction, but it is worth regarding, because art is about the
artist communicating and expressing ideas.
40 Art is subjective,so finding what you like and don't like about a work of art is
a key factor to better understanding it.If you don't like a certain style, don't worry-
there is something out there for everyone, from Abstract Expressionism to Photorealism.
A.Do some homework.
B.Find your likes and dislikes.
C.Is the artwork forceful and dramatic?
D.Is there a right or a wrong way on how to view art?
E.However,it doesn't mean you can't view art if you're not an art expert.
F.These simple observations can help you gain a better understanding of the artwork.
G.The most enriching and fascinating artwork requires plenty of time to fully appreciate.

Several years ago,I was living in New York and working for an airline,so I never got
back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues
around. But in my heart I was sad because I couldn't stay with my family.Sometimes my
colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was
different.I was lucky.I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family
on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came,I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face."Dad,
Merry Christmas!"was all my younger son had time to say.He seemed to be racing
against time.I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly.I got downstairs
just to see the two little boys'faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus had
left them.I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the
amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys.
When their inspection had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really
delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
Delight flooded the room.As their mother began giving out gifts,I smiled to myself,
wondering how my unexpected gifts this year would be received. With so many Christmas
spent outside,I had prepared so many gifts for my children and together with my wife I hid
them in several secret places. But the children were excellent detectives and they found all
of them. They were happily opening packages constantly thanking considerate Santa Claus
for his kindness and ability to know their desires. But I had not received a single one.I
knew they had forgotten my existence with my absence from their Christmas these years.
