Children who often move house are more likely to suffer poor health, research
suggests.Moving several times before the age of 18 can affect the health, psychological
distress and increase the chance that a child may use illegal drugs.
The study included information for 850 people,followed-up for a period of 20 years.
Scientists found changing home several times could cause psychological distress in children.
18
By the age of 18,59 percent had moved house once or twice while one in five had
moved at least three times. Some 20 percent had stayed in the same house during their
childhood,
Children of single parents or those with step-parents were more likely to move home,
as were those with two or three brothers or sisters. Those with four or more brothers and
sisters were more likely to stay in the same house.
Experts found that people who moved at least once had an increased risk of poor
health, some of this could be because of changing schools. Those who had moved three
times or more were three times as likely to have had suicidal thoughts as those who stayed
in the same house.
Dr Denise Brown said,"For many people, moving house is a good experience as it may
lead to improved family conditions. But for some family members, especially children,
moving can be bad and may lead to poor health outcomes and behaviors in adulthood. The
bad effect on health in adulthood appears to be somewhat accounted for by a high number
of school moves..”

二、阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
Five Steps to Better Handwriting
Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it's time to put their pen to paper.
Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them?1 Here are five
steps that really work!
Get a great grasp
Try this-hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name.Pretty hard? But
when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier.2 Hold it in place
with your thumb, and your index (and middle fingers.
Let the lines be your guide
Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right
size and proportion ()3 Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those
capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.
Slow down
If your writing is hard to read, try slowing down a little. If you rush,it's hard to
control where you stop and start your letters.
Lower the pressure(压力)
4 That makes it harder to make the smooth lines.Try easing up and don't hold the pencil
too tightly.
5
Lots of games require you to write or draw pictures. So even though it's not
schoolwork, you're still using the skills you need to control your pen better.
A.Play games
B.Ask for more advice
C.So“a”should be half the height of a capital“A”.
D.You've been writing since you were a little kid.
E.Some kids press down really hard when they write.
F.The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.
G.The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.

seen it coming.I was excited for the weekend,when my daughter,Kristil,then 12,and I
planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail"We're sorry, but your
work assignment has ended. My heart sank.
I wasn't just a single parent;I was the only parent.I did everything I could to give
Kristil a good life, but there were some things my love couldn't fix.The next day as we
searched for our tree,I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed the Christmas tree prices.Empty-
handed,we returned home.
Over the next week,I furiously applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. All
applications ended in vain.I felt as if the world was closing in on me.On a weekend
afternoon,I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party of her
—23
classmate.I watched as she went in,surrounded by all the nice things we couldn't afford.I
drove home defeated.
Back at home,I glanced out the window. It had been snowing on and off all morning.
I noticed a small woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the
wind. She got out.I realized it was my old professor,Esther Heffernan.I hadn't seen her
since we'd met for lunch three months ago.I'd first met Esther 10 years earlier, when I was
her student at Edgewood College in Madison,Wisconsin.Kristil was 2 at the time, and I
sometimes took her to class.Esther was understanding and would bring coloring books to
occupy Kristil. After I graduated, she kept in touch, meeting me for lunch every few

Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before
we all knew it,it was the last day of school.
Our school had a very special tradition on the last
day.All the teachers filled the sidewalk, waving
goodbye to the kids as the buses pulled out with
their horns honking. But on that particular day,
Steven walked slowly to the bus,his head down,
tears in his eyes.He boarded the bus
reluctantly, hesitated, and then ran back off the
bus to hug Mr.Rowe."I don't want to leave
you."He sobbed with red-rimmed eyes.Mr.
Rowe comforted him,“I will miss you, too.”
Paragraph 2:
Many years later,Mr.Rowe and I were
surprised when a handsome young man walked
into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps
uniform. The young man stood tall and proud. It
was Steven!Mr.Rowe and I couldn't believe our
eyes.He saluted and hugged Mr.Rowe tightly!
"I have come back to school today just to say
thanks to you!"It is my hope that every teacher is
blessed with such an experience of a former
student coming back to say, simply to say a very
simple THANKS.
