Do you listen to music at the gym? Today, most gym-goers like to wear head-phones and listen to self-selected music while they’re doing exercise. Why do songs from personalized playlists seem to increase motivation and make intense exercise more enjoyable when someone is walking or jogging?
Based on practical experience, a recent study provides new evidence that listening to music while running on a treadmill (跑步机) fights with mental tiredness and improves performance.According to a news release, this study is “the first to investigate the effect of listening to music playlists on long-distance running capacity and performance when mentally tired”.These findings were published online ahead of print on 22 June.
For this study, researchers from the University of Edinburgh had a group of experienced runners do a high-intensity 5-kilometre treadmill run with and without self-selected motivational music after they’d performed a series of cognitive (认知的) exams designed to put them in a mentally tired state. The researchers found that “listening to self-selected music in a mentally tired state reduces the negative impact of mental tiredness on their running capacity and performance, potentially due to changed perception of effort when listening to music”.
“Mental tiredness is a common occurrence for many of us and can negatively impact many of our day-to-day activities, including exercise.Finding safe and effective ways to reduce this negative impact is, therefore, useful,” Shaun Phillips of Edinburgh’s Moray House School said in the news release.
“The findings indicate that listening to personalized motivational music may be a useful strategy to help active people improve their endurance running capacity and performance when mentally tired,” he added.“This positive impact of self-selected music could help people to better keep the quality and beneficial impact of their exercise sessions.”

(2026•湖南邵东创新高级中学期中)If you have ever dreamed of making money from making music but are worried that you have little talent, don’t let that stop you — a man called Alex Mitchell might be able to help.
Mr Mitchell is the founder and boss of a website and app called Boomy, which helps its users create their own songs using artificial intelligence (AI) software.
It is easy to use the app to help you compose the music. What you need to do is choose from a number of types and click on “create song”, and the AI will compose one for you in less than 30 seconds. It is able to quickly choose the song’s style and melody (旋律).And from there you can then finish your song with ease. You can do things such as adding or removing instruments, making everything sound brighter or softer, and recording some songs.
But, how good are these Boomy-created songs? It has to be said that they do sound very computer-produced.You wouldn’t mistake them for a group of people making music using real instruments. However, using AI to help create music isn’t quite new.US classical composer, David Cope, developed such a software system back in the 1980s.One day he set it up to write pieces similar to those by Johann Sebastian Bach.Mr Cope then went out for a sandwich, and returned to find that the computer had created 5,000 Bach-styled pieces. These were later made public on an album called Bach on purpose.More recently, in 2019, US electronic music composer, Holly Herndon, made an album called PROTO working together with an AI system called Spawn that she had co-created.
Mr Mitchell says that technological advancements in AI have made songwriting software much cheaper. It’s not just for musicians anymore; it’s for most people like you and me.

(2026•江苏苏州实验中学月考)There’s no tune, no lyrics and you can’t dance to it.Don’t let that put you off: white noise is the music industry’s next big thing.Streaming services have seen an explosion of tracks in the last year consisting entirely of recordings of rainfall, ocean waves and winds.
Some of the recordings have earned their creators millions of pounds.Record companies and tech firms have taken notice.Apple is including background noise in its next operating system, and TikTok has been promoting pink noise and brown noise — sounds with lower frequencies as an aid to concentration for students at the start of the school year.
Noise fans say that studying, sleeping and meditation (冥想) are all enhanced by listening to these sounds at proper levels. The economics of music-streaming mean noise-makers can cash in.Someone falling asleep to White Noise Baby Sleep’s 90-second track Clean White Noise on repeat for seven hours will win up 280 plays.By last Friday it had been played 837 million times, worth an estimated $2.5 m in royalties (版税).The lead track on Spotify’s own Rain Sounds playlist, two minutes of rainfall, has more than 100 m plays.
In contrast, Laura Mvula only has 541,000 Spotify streams for the title track of this year’s award-winning album, Pink Noise — not a slice of sleepiness but tuneful, lyrical dance-pop that took her three years to make.Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services pay royalties in roughly the same way. They set aside a total pot for royalties, which is then divided up between distributors, record labels, recording artists and songwriters. That means that Mvula will get a smaller slice of the Spotify pie than White Noise Baby Sleep, although most of it goes to the major record companies.
It’s hard to work out who is making such noise.Spotify lists White Noise Baby Sleep’s songwriting credits as belonging to an Erik Eriksson. It’s not obvious who Eriksson is or whether he is part of a larger organization, but the Medium website One Zero last year established that many of the artists’ names are pseudonyms (假名) used by companies.
