(Text 1)
M:Are there train tickets to London on September 1st? I’d like two
tickets for the first-class cabin.
W:Let me check. Yes, there are.
(Text 2)
M:I’ll leave for London next Monday, and then I’ll fly to Boston from
there. Do you have any vacation plans, Michelle?
W:Mike and I will travel to Beijing to see my parents for the Spring
Festival.
(Text 3)
W:Have you seen the news on TV that there’s been serious flooding in
the South?
M:Yes, I have. My friends and I have got to cancel our travel plans.
W:What a pity! I know you’ve been looking forward to it for months.
(Text 4)
W:Are you ready to place your order?
M:I haven’t decided yet. Can you give me some advice?
W:Sure! Our special today is the fried fish with rice.
M:The fish sounds nice. Can I get that with a side salad?
(Text 5)
W:Is the River Thames still polluted?
M:It certainly used to be. I remember it used to smell awful, and if
you fell in, you had to be taken to hospital.
W:That sounds terrible!
M:But in the 1960s, they cleaned it up, and in fact it’s now one of the
cleanest city rivers in the UK.
(Text 6)
W:Hello, Jack! It’s Emily.
M:Hi, Emily! How has your dress designing been going in London?
W:Pretty good. And how was your football game in Paris?
M:It was great. We won — and I was named the best player of the
game.
W:Congratulations! You’re always the best.
M:Thanks. Oh, did I tell you about my trip to London?
W:Yes. When are you coming?
M:I will be arriving at around 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.
W:Oh, dear. I can’t meet you at the airport because I have an
appointment with my son’s headmaster then, but I can ask my brother
Bob to pick you up.
M:That’s good. Thanks a lot!
(Text 7)
W:I am sorry, but I cannot stay for the rest of class today.
M:Why do you need to leave early?
W:I don’t feel so good.
M:What seems to be the matter?
W:I feel sick to my stomach.
M:Perhaps you should get checked out at the Student Health Center
before you go home.
W:I have some medicine at home that I could take.
M:Would you like me to give you a ride, or would you like someone to
go with you?
W:Thank you, but the bus stop is right beside my house.
M:I hope that you feel better soon. E-mail me if you have any
questions. Make sure you check the website for your homework.
(Text 8)
M:Do you realize what time it is? I’ve already finished a whole
movie.
W:I’m sorry; I didn’t realize that it was so late. We were enjoying
ourselves at the party and ... and I forgot the time.
M:Do you honestly believe that is a good excuse?
W:Not really. I’m telling the truth. I think most of my friends got
home late tonight.
M:Haven’t I asked you to call if you’re going to be home late?
W:Yeah, you did. I just forgot to call.
M:That’s beside the point. You still should have called.
W:You’re right. I’m sorry.
M:Next time you come in late without calling, don’t even bother
coming home.
W:You would really make me spend the night outside?
M:Yes. Maybe then you’ll figure out how to follow the rules.
W:Dad, I promise this won’t happen again.
(Text 9)
W:Welcome to England, and I hope your visit here will be a pleasant
one. I’d like to draw your attention to a few of our laws.
M:Thanks.
W:UK drinking law forbids people under the age of 18 from buying
alcohol, as well as friends from buying it for them.
M:Ah, yes. It’s the same in our country. What about smoking?
W:It is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you’re under 16.
M:That’s a good law. Most countries have many teens that smoke.
W:Yes, it has actually become a serious social problem for us here.
Okay, the biggest thing you’ll need to watch out for is our traffic, as it’s quite different from that in other countries. You should be careful when crossing the road, as the traffic moves on the left side of the road here. Always use the crossing for walking.
M:Yes, it’s really unique!
W:And don’t take any chances when crossing the road. I think the last
thing you should be aware of is littering. It is against the law to throw
away rubbish on the streets or in other public places. Whenever you have
something to throw away, just put it in one of the litter bins along the
road, or just put it in your pocket and throw it away at home.
M:Thanks so much for telling me all this.
(Text 10)
Hello, everyone. Today, I’m going to share with you a little
about the kinds of foods that English people eat.
A traditional English breakfast consists of eggs, fried bread,
mushrooms, bacon, tomatoes and baked beans, but most English
people today prefer a breakfast of hot or cold grain, juice, and a warm
drink of either tea or coffee.
The English lunch is normally eaten between 12:00 noon and 1:30
pm, and most often consists of a sandwich. Along with the sandwich,
an English person might have a bag of potato chips, fruit or biscuits. A
glass of beer might also be added to lunch if the person eats in one of the
many pubs; otherwise, a tea or coffee. Fish and chips, often
wrapped in a piece of paper, are still a favourite among English diners.
The afternoon tea is simply a time to snack on a bag of potato chips or
a few biscuits, and drink a quick cup of tea or coffee. Tiny cakes and
sweets are often eaten as well. Tea is also an old-fashioned term for
dinner; some English people still say “tea” when they mean the last
main meal of the day.

McGriff was in her second year of
university when she read Half the Sky, which examines the unfair
treatment of women in developing countries. She was shocked to learn
that 129 million girls worldwide do not have access to school.
“In much of the world, women and girls are responsible for
household duties,” said McGriff, “It’s seen that girls won’t ever be
putting their education to use.” Additionally, many poor families can’t
afford girls’ tuition fees, school supplies and uniforms (校服).
Yet, studies have shown that providing free uniforms can reduce
dropout rates by 16% and absenteeism by more than 35%.This simple
solution took root in McGriff’s mind and started her journey helping girls
transform their lives.
As she took an entrepreneurship (创业) class, she was tasked
with creating a business or nonprofit for a class project, which reminded
her of the idea of the school uniform.Soon she developed an idea. After
conducting field research, McGriff returned home, presented her
education project at entrepreneurship competitions and won $35, 000 in
startup fund.Eventually she established her nonprofit, Style Her
Empowered (SHE), to bring her vision to life.
That first year, the group hired local tailors and provided uniforms
and school fees for 65 girls. But they soon ran into a problem — the
students were outgrowing quickly. To address this, McGriff’s team,
together with local tailors and students, designed an innovative
“growing uniform” which could be adjusted to fit a girl for up to three
years, accommodating six different sizes.
Today, SHE serves girls in 20 rural villages in southern Togo,
providing 1,500 girls a year with free uniforms, school fees,
supplies, tutoring, and much more.Once enrolled, students receive
weekly tutoring. As a result, SHE’s students consistently pass their
exams at higher rates than the national average.“Our students have
increased their performance in school dramatically,” McGriff
said.“If given the opportunity, they shine.”

Artificial intelligence-
powered medical treatment options are on the rise and have the potential to
improve diagnostic accuracy, but a new study found that about almost
half of participants would choose a human doctor rather than AI for
diagnosis and treatment.
“While many patients appear resistant to the use of AI, accuracy of
information and a slight push from physicians may help increase
acceptance,” Dr Slepian mentioned the study’s other primary finding:
that a human touch can help clinical practices use AI to their advantage and
earn patients’ trust.“To ensure the benefits of AI are secured in clinical
practice, future research on best methods of physician involvement and
patient decision making is required.”
In the study, participants were asked whether they would prefer to
have an AI system or a physical doctor for diagnosis and treatment, and
under what circumstances.Researchers conducted structured interviews
with actual patients, testing their reactions to current and future AI
technologies. Then they polled 2,472 participants across diverse
ethnic, racial and socioeconomic groups using a blinded, randomized
survey.
Overall, participants were almost evenly split, with more than
52% choosing human doctors as a preference versus approximately 47%
choosing an AI diagnostic method. If study participants were informed
their primary care physicians felt AI was superior, the acceptance of AI
by study participants on re-questioning increased. This signaled the
significance of the human physician in guiding a patient’s decision.
Disease severity didn’t affect participants’ trust in AI. Compared
to White participants, Black ones selected AI less often and Native
Americans more often.Older participants were less likely to choose it,
as were those who self-identified as politically conservative. These
findings suggest differing groups will need specific attention as to
informing them as to the value and usefulness of AI to enhance
diagnoses.
“I feel this study will guide many future studies and clinical
translational decisions even now,” Dr Slepian said.“The onus will be
on physicians and others in health care to ensure that information in AI
systems is accurate, and to continue to maintain and enhance the
accuracy of AI systems as they will play an increasing role in the future of
health care.”

As cities balloon with growth,
access to nature for people living in urban areas is becoming harder to
find.If you’re lucky, there might be a pocket park near where you
live, but it’s unusual to find places in a city that are relatively wild.
Past research has found health and wellness benefits of nature for
humans, but a new study shows that wildness in urban areas is extremely
important for human well-being.
The research team focused on a large urban park. They surveyed
several hundred park-goers, asking them to submit a written summary
online of a meaningful interaction they had with nature in the park. The
researchers then examined these submissions, coding (编码)
experiences into different categories. For example, one participant’s
experience of “We sat and listened to the waves at the beach for a while”
was assigned the categories “sitting at beach” and “listening to
waves”.
Across the 320 submissions, a pattern of categories the researchers
call a “nature language” began to emerge. After the coding of all
submissions, half a dozen categories were noted most often as important
to visitors. These include encountering wildlife, walking along the edge
of water, and following an established trail.
Naming each nature experience creates a usable language, which
helps people recognize and take part in the activities that are most
satisfying and meaningful to them. For example, the experience of
walking along the edge of water might be satisfying for a young
professional on a weekend hike in the park.Back downtown during a
workday, they can enjoy a more domestic form of this interaction by
walking along a fountain on their lunch break.
“We’re trying to generate a language that helps bring the human-
nature interactions back into our daily lives. And for that to happen, we
also need to protect nature so that we can interact with it,” said Peter
Kahn, a senior author of the study.

Six months ago, I was injured in an
accident, leaving me with a brain injury.I was struggling to get through
each day.Mostly I was tired.I even suffered from depression.I sat on
the cold stone steps, feeling hopeless.
“Meow?”
I looked up.A black and white kitten with round green eyes looked
back at me.His head stuck out from the bushes a few steps away.He
meowed again. Then, leaping from his hiding spot, he ran right up to
me.He rubbed up against my legs. When I reached down to pet him,
he leaned into my touch, purring (打呼噜).
That was all it took.I broke down.I cried, the tears hot on my
face in the rain. The kitten just watched me.I hadn’t scared him
away.In fact, he stood there as if he knew how desperately I needed a
friend.Right at that very moment.
I looked into his big green eyes and he looked back.He was clearly
homeless.“When was the last time you ate?” I said, touching his
wet fur.It occurred to me that I might not be able to tackle my own
problems, but I could do something to fix his problems.
It became a routine:Every day, I’d go to the steps with a packet of
cat food.Usually, the kitten was already waiting for me.Over time he
inspired me to get help for my depression, and even gave me the
confidence to fall in love with a nice girl, Becky, who also loved
animals.
However, one day, I couldn’t see my usual dinnertime
visitor. That lasted for several days.I felt so sorry for such a
loss.Becky knew how much that cat had done for me.“Hopefully,
he’ll turn up,” Becky tried to comfort me.
But he didn’t.I’d still go out most evenings to see if my little cat had
returned, but he never did.I found myself imagining that he’d found a
real family to go home to.And he deserved it.
Becky and I were shopping together one day when we came across an
animal adoption event.
“Becky, it’s him!” I opened the cage and picked him up,
holding him tight.
Becky and I were shopping together one day when we came across an
animal adoption event.“Come on! Maybe we can adopt one.” Becky
said, holding my arm, like that little black-and-white kitten had
done for me.Becky and I picked our way through the narrow space
between the cages. Some of the cats pressed themselves against the
bars, crying for attention.Others watched silently with wide
eyes. When a black and white paw shot out from between the bars,
touching me on the arm, I leaned down to get a better look at the lively
cat inside. His green eyes met mine.I was stunned.
“Becky, it’s him!” I opened the cage and picked him up,
holding him tight. He purred steadily, as if he knew there was no way I
was letting him go again.I clearly remembered that he became my
constant companion in my struggling days.As I went through the process
of my depression, he was there. On bad days, he’d curl up in my lap
and purr until I felt better. Now I was far from the lonely and depressed
man he had first approached in the rain. Thanks to him and Becky, I had
the support I needed and motivation to get where I am now.My greatest
hope is to do for someone else what my cat did for me.
