People may want to get things done without moving a finger. The Internet of Things (IoT) is making that dream come true. The technology uses sensors (传感器) to connect devices (设备) to each other and to the Internet. It has encouraged countless products to do everyday tasks. Here are some examples:
I’m a smart fridge. I can do more than keep food cold. If you forget what you need to buy for lunch, you can check your phone to find what I have. If you have too many sugary drinks, I can warn you and suggest a piece of fruit instead.
I’m a smart wristband. I can help people with heart diseases. I can record blood pressure and heart rate. Then I send the information directly to a team of doctors so that they can deal with the problem as soon as possible.
I’m a smart helmet. I help achieve greater safety for motorbike riders. My cameras can show things around them. I can also warn them when they are riding too close to passing cars.
I’m a drone. I often fly above farmland. Farmers tell me which field to survey and how high to fly. My cameras and sensors help them learn about soil and plants. I can even spray pesticides (喷药) properly.

Imagine you take a picture of your favourite sweater, and a smart robot looks at the picture and makes the same sweater! Sounds like something out of a fun story, right? But it’s actually getting close to coming true!
Some researchers in Canada have made a special robot. This robot uses AI to look at pictures of knitted (编织) clothes and recreate the same patterns (还原图案)! Even better, the robot can do it all by itself. First, it looks at the picture of a sweater and draws a simple sketch (草图) of the pattern. Then, it turns that sketch into knitting steps that it can follow. It’s like giving the robot a recipe to make soup, but this one knits sweaters!
People tested the robot with 5, 000 pictures. And you know what? It got the patterns right more than 97% of the time! This new robot could be a big help. In the future, it may help make clothes faster and at a lower cost. It could even bring back old, special patterns from history.
But there’s a worry, too. Many people around the world work in knitting jobs. If robots do the work, those people might lose their jobs. That could be a big problem.
Let’s hope that scientists make the robots even better in the future, while also thinking about how to help people whose jobs may change because of it. After all, cool inventions are even better when they make life easier for everyone.
( ) 24. What can the special robot do?
A. Take pictures of sweaters.
B. Make soup by following recipes.
C. Draw pictures of old historical clothes.
D. Recreate knitting patterns from pictures.
( ) 25. How does the writer develop Paragraph 3?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By showing reasons.
( ) 26. What’s the main problem with the new robot?
A. It may cost a lot to make. B. It may make people lose jobs.
C. It may knit clothes too slowly. D. It may raise the price of knitted clothes.

A Chinese robot became the unexpected star in an international kite festival. At the beginning of the festival, the robot held the string (线) of a kite flying in the sky and made up-and-down movements. The show lasted for 20 minutes and drew crowds of visitors to take photos.
The robot in the international festival is a good example of human-like robots. In recent years, human-like running robots have greatly improved and surprised the world. This year, a robot from a Chinese company broke the men’s record for the half-marathon (半程马拉松). In another event, a robot, also from a Chinese company, came close to the men’s 100-meter world record.
Robots are not just for flying a kite or running in competitions. They are also helping on farms. Picking tomatoes is tiring work for humans. Now farming robots can help with it. The robots first get information about the tomatoes on their own. The information is about whether the tomatoes are ripe (成熟的) or not and whether there is any tomato hidden behind leaves. With the information, the robots can work out the most effective way to pick the fruit. When picking tomatoes, the robots must choose ripe tomatoes and leave unripe ones untouched.
There are many reasons for the rapid improvement of robots in recent years. The cost of building robots has fallen a lot. New computer chips allow machines to perform better. With the development of technology, robots are playing an increasingly important role in everyday life.
( ) 27. What did the robot do in the international kite festival?
A. It made kites. B. It flew a kite.
C. It hosted a kite show. D. It took photos of kites.
( ) 28. What did the two human-like running robots have in common?
A. Coming from Chinese companies.

A. The future of robot industry.
B. An international kite festival.
C. The rapid development of robots.
D. A race between robots and humans.

HIGH-FLYING HELPERS
Drones, created as tools of war at first, are now performing important tasks to help people around the world.
Sending medical help to hard-to-reach places has been a problem for years. In Rwanda, some small hospitals don’t have enough medicine. As a result, many people die. A local company is trying to use drones to solve this problem. Drones can quickly provide healthcare service to the hospitals around Rwanda, and more people receive life-saving medicine. Drones also help after natural disasters. In 2015, a heavy storm hit Vanuatu, leaving many people homeless. Drones took pictures for the rescue (救援) teams. This helped the teams judge the situation quickly and offer help to the areas that were hardest hit.
Drones are also helping environmental organizations. Every year, poachers (偷猎者) kill many endangered animals. To stop them, the WWF uses drones. “They help us see things that we can’t,” says Colby, who works for the WWF. Drones can easily identify (识别) poachers in the dark. As well as finding poachers, these tools can be used to follow and protect animals. Scientists at a university plan to use them for a project: recording wildlife and identifying animal groups. The project leader believes drones will become widely used. “I think we will have plenty of drones flying over forests,” he predicts.
A tool made for war is now being used to save lives. “Drones can be good for both humans and animals. There’s nothing that can take the place of a good scientist. But now, thanks to drones, scientists are able to finish projects they’ve never imagined before,” says Kike, a man who cares about the environment.
( ) 31. What do drones do for the people in Rwanda?
A. They take clear pictures. B. They help the homeless in time.
C. They send medicine fast. D. They judge the situation carefully.
( ) 32. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The drones. B. The poachers.
C. The animals. D. The organizations.
( ) 33. What are drones mainly used for in Paragraph 3?
A. Starting a project. B. Finding lost people.
C. Protecting animals. D. Recording daily life.
( ) 34. What can we infer from Kike’s words?
A. Wars have brought many problems.
B. New technologies need improvement.
C. People should protect the environment.
D. Drones can help scientists do more things.
( ) 35. In which section of a magazine can we read the text?
A. Nature. B. Technology. C. Health. D. Travel.
四、任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Would you ride in a car that drives by itself? Driverless cars use cameras, sensors (传感器) and computers to see the road, stop at red lights and avoid other cars. They use AI to work out the quickest and safest route. Although driverless cars have these high-tech tools, not everyone wants to try them. Are driverless cars a good idea?
Some people think driverless cars are the future of travel. Driving long distances is hard on human drivers. But that’s not a problem for driverless cars. It can carry on without needing a break for the whole journey. If passengers want to sing or play games, they wouldn’t have to worry about distracting (使分心) the driver. What’s more, driverless cars will help build a whole new industry and create a large number of jobs for people over the next 10 years.
However, some have different opinions. Instead of trying out driverless cars, we should explore more planet-friendly ways to travel. Anyway, some passengers like talking to their taxi drivers, especially if they’re in a new city and want to ask questions about it. Though computer-operated cars might be efficient (效率高的) ways to get around, we should think about humans too. If driverless cars take over, what will taxi drivers do for a living instead? Besides, computers can get things wrong. In some areas, driverless cars have led to serious accidents.

七、短文填空(共10空,每空1分,共10分)
How are writers using AI tools to keep up with the fast publishing industry? What effect is this having ____56____ their writing process (过程)?
The fact is that most writers I know are using AI, whether on purpose or not. ___57____ (near) all tasks they do need some form of AI, including a spelling checker. But we must not allow AI to weaken our imagination and creativity. Our job as storytellers truly requires us ____58___ (be) as real and personal as possible.
Therefore, I’d rather see AI tools used to improve the quality of a work, rather than only to speed up production. Fine art ____59____ (create) not in a day or a week — it usually needs a long period of time.
Yes, we can use ____60___ (amaze) AI tools to help reduce writing work and improve writing quality. At the very least, AI can quickly point out grammar ____61____ (mistake) or perfect sentences. It can also find the weakness rapidly in a story or point out the problems in characters. In marketing, AI can offer ____62___ effective method to attract readers. These ways no doubt make it possible for the story to come out in a shorter time.
When __63____ (make) use of AI, we must never allow it to replace our imagination or jump the necessary step to think by ____63____ (us). We use AI to improve our writing, not replace our story creativity. When we are ready with a quality story, be confident that it ____65____ (meet) a publisher’s need.

C
