Good evening, everyone. I’m Jennifer Green. Thanks for joining us. In today’s edition, Our Perfect Life, our guest is Brock Bastian, a social psychologist from the University of Melbourne. Professor Bastian’s research focuses on pain, happiness and morality. Recently, he published a book on the role of pain in promoting pleasure. The title of the book is The Other Side of Happiness. In this book, he argues that as we seek to escape pain or sorrow, we’re weakening ourselves and may lose our adaptability to deal with pain in the future. Painful experiences are in fact vital for our development and how we face the unavoidable challenges ahead and they play a key role in helping us to develop our ability to feel truly happy. Now, let’s welcome Professor Bastian to talk about his ideas in the book.

Most 10-year-olds spend their free time playing video games, but Ernesto Gael Hernandez, from Brownsville, Texas, is busy running his own 3D printing business and dreaming of buying his mom a house someday.
What began as a fun way to make custom keychains for classmates has quickly grown into a successful small business. Based in his home workshop, Ernesto creates various customized items, such as keychains, whistles, can openers and stress-relief toys for people with anxiety and ADHD (多动症).
This idea first took shape several months ago, when he told his mother that he wanted to buy a 3D printer. Instead of simply buying him a machine, she encouraged him to work and save for it himself. He saved $500 from chores to buy his first printer. It was then that he came up with the idea of making money from 3D printing, thus launching his brand, Prestige 3D Labs. He even taught himself to create custom designs by watching online tutorials (教程).
Business has grown fast. He has earned around $1,500 in profit so far and demand became so strong that he partnered with a local Brownsville clothing store called Jungle to help sell his creations. Now, three printers run regularly to keep up with orders coming in.
Despite business success, Ernesto sticks to a tight schedule to balance his business, schoolwork and football training. With printing tasks arranged early in the morning, during school days and before practice, he succeeds in running his business steadily.
For Ernesto’s mother, Samantha Quezada, the business has become more than just a way for her son to earn money. “It’s a little bit stressful, but honestly I enjoy we get to do it together,” Quezada said. “It is part of our quality time.” But for Ernesto, his motivation is surprisingly heartfelt. “I just like doing it because I want to invest in a house for my mom when I grow older,” Ernesto said.
24.What does Ernesto’s 3D printing business mainly do?
A.It prints keychains for classmates. B.It produces daily household items.
C.It creates a range of mood-lifting products. D.It tailors various products to customers’ needs.
25.What inspired Ernesto to start his business?
A.His dream of buying a house for his mother.
B.His experience of saving money to buy the printer.
C.The decision to make keychains for his classmates.
D.The high profit from selling all kinds of small products.
26.Which of the following can best describe Ernesto?
A.Ambitious and organized. B.Caring and generous.
C.Hard-working and humorous. D.Adventurous and creative.
27.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Hard Work Creates a Teen’s Success B.Business Builds Close Family Bonds
C.3D Skills Open a Whole New World D.3D Printing Shapes a Teen’s Dream House
【答案】24.D 25.B 26.A 27.D

Considering the amazing power of AI to change our lives, we must all act now to prepare for a future guided by AI. This is why the book AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence is so important. In this interesting new book, Catriona Campbell offers a practical guide to dealing with the problems that the coming AI revolution (变革) will bring.
In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience in turning complex ideas into the understandable. She writes from the practical viewpoint of a business person rather than an academic, creating a guide that is very easy to understand and full of useful information. By the end, it will make you feel nearly as intelligent as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI — the technology companies and world leaders — so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.
28.What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.If read by uneducated persons.
B.If translated by unacademic persons.
C.If written by less competent persons.
D.If reviewed by ill-intentioned persons.
29.What is a feature of AI by Design according to the text?
A.It is filled with complex codes.
B.It is intended for AI professionals.
C.It offers step-by-step instructions.
D.It uses a practical way of writing.
30.What does Campbell urge people to do regarding AI development?
A.Observe existing regulations on it.
B.Reconsider expert opinions about it.
C.Make joint efforts to keep it under control.
D.Learn from prior experience to slow it down.
31.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To recommend a book on AI.
B.To clarify the definition of AI.
C.To honor an outstanding AI expert.
D.To give a brief account of AI history.
【答案】28.C 29.D 30.C 31.A
根据画线部分的下文“such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience in turning complex ideas into the understandable. (这样一本书可能会像驱动人工智能的计算机代码一样复杂难懂,但幸运的是,Campbell拥有二十多年的专业经验,能够将复杂的想法转化为可理解的内容。)”可知,此处通过对比表明Campbell撰写的这本书是通俗易懂的,但如果别人写这本书的话可能就不是这样了,可推知画线部分表示“如果由能力较差的人撰写”。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“She writes from the practical viewpoint of a business person rather than an academic, creating a guide that is very easy to understand and full of useful information. (她从一位商业人士而非学者的实用视角写作,创造了一本非常容易理解且充满有用信息的指南。)”可知,该书采用了实用的写作方式。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse. (她说,我们必须控制人工智能,否则就有被边缘化甚至更糟的风险。)”可知,关于人工智能的发展,Campbell敦促人们共同努力使其处于控制之下。
31.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“This is why the book AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence is so important. (这就是为什么《人工智能设计:与人工智能共生的计划》这本书如此重要。)”和最后一段“AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it. (人工智能将影响我们所有人,如果你只读一本关于这个主题的书,那就是这本。)”可知,第一段引出新书《人工智能设计:与人工智能共生的计划》,第二段介绍该书的作者及其写作风格,第三至四段概述书中的主要观点及意义,最后一段进行总结,再次强烈推荐该书。因此,作者的写作目的是推荐一本关于人工智能的书。

Insect-size drones are too small to carry around complex navigation systems. To help tiny autonomous fliers find their way home, researchers are taking their clues from honeybees with the Bee-Nav, described today in Nature.
A honeybee leaving the hive first takes a short learning flight to memorize nearby landmarks, explains the study’s lead author Guido de Croon. As a bee flies away, “it keeps track of the direction and speed of its movement,” de Croon says, in a process called path integration. Because path integration tends to gather tiny measurement errors over time, the insect relies on the memorized landmarks to correct its course as it gets back home.
De Croon and his colleagues copied this workflow. A drone performs a learning flight, capturing scenery with a camera. It trains a neural (神经的) network to map images to homes, creating a safe zone. Using path integration, it returns, if within the zone, the network guides it home.
The Bee-Nav does this using a computer the size of a credit card that runs neural nets with between 3.4 and 42.3 kilobytes (千字节) of memory — thousands of times less than conventional mapping setups use. “What I find especially exciting is how little computation is needed. This is the kind of approach that makes serious outdoor arrangements possible.” says Sarah Bergbreiter, a mechanical engineer.
De Croon’s team is still working out a few challenges for the platform. “Platforms running Bee-Nav will also need local barrier avoidance and planning capability if the environment is crowded or dynamic,” says Sean Humbert, a mechanical engineer at the University of Colorado Boulder, who was not involved in the study.
But even now, de Croon says, the Bee-Nav can make autonomous, outdoor drones smaller and more power-efficient. “We could easily put it on a 50-gram, even 30-gram drone,” de Croon claims. Scaling autonomous drones further down to the size of actual bees, he notes, would require solving other fundamental problems like contracting batteries. “But we hope when these problems are solved in the long term, we will have the intelligence ready to match that,” de Croon says.
32.What is the purpose of the research on Bee-Nav?
A.To copy bees’daily flight workflow. B.To adjust the overall size of micro drones.
C.To facilitate the navigation of tiny drones. D.To improve drones’load-carrying performance.
33.Why does the author describe the bee’s navigation before introducing Bee-Nav?
A.To show how bees learn to fly around their hive.
B.To prove tiny drones have trouble with navigation.
C.To show that bees are more intelligent than drones.
D.To explain the biological inspiration behind the Bee-Nav.
34.What is Sarah Bergbreiter’s attitude towards Bee-Nav?
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable. C.Uncaring. D.Interested.
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Drones as small as real bees are already widely used outdoors.
B.The navigation technology for tiny drones still needs further tests.
C.Bee-Nav is designed specifically for 30-gram to 50-gram drones.
D.It is tough to make batteries smaller for bee-sized drones currently.
根据第一段“Insect-size drones are too small to carry around complex navigation systems. To help tiny autonomous fliers find their way home, researchers are taking their clues from honeybees with the Bee-Nav, described today in Nature. (昆虫大小的无人机体积太小,无法携带复杂的导航系统。为了帮助微型自主飞行器找到回家的路,研究人员从蜜蜂身上获得线索,研发了Bee-Nav,这在《自然》期刊上有所描述。)”可知,研究Bee-Nav的目的是帮助微型无人机解决导航问题,为微型无人机的导航提供便利。
33.推理判断题。根据第二段“A honeybee leaving the hive first takes a short learning flight to memorize nearby landmarks, explains the study’s lead author Guido de Croon. As a bee flies away, “it keeps track of the direction and speed of its movement,” de Croon says, in a process called path integration. Because path integration tends to gather tiny measurement errors over time, the insect relies on the memorized landmarks to correct its course as it gets back home. (该研究的主要作者Guido de Croon解释说,一只离开蜂巢的蜜蜂首先会进行短暂的学习飞行,以记住附近的地标。de Croon说,当蜜蜂飞走时,“它会跟踪自己运动的方向和速度”,这一过程称为路径积分。因为随着时间的推移,路径积分往往会积累微小的测量误差,所以昆虫在回家时依靠记忆中的地标来纠正其路线。)”可知,第二段介绍蜜蜂依靠路径积分结合记忆地标校正路线的导航机制,再根据第三段中“De Croon and his colleagues copied this workflow. (de Croon和他的同事复刻了这一工作流程。)”可推知,作者在介绍Bee-Nav前描述蜜蜂的导航方式,是为了解释Bee-Nav的生物学灵感来源。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段Sarah Bergbreiter的话“What I find especially exciting is how little computation is needed. This is the kind of approach that makes serious outdoor arrangements possible. (让我特别兴奋的是它只需要极少的计算量。这种方法让大规模户外部署成为了可能。)”可知,Sarah对Bee-Nav持支持赞赏的态度。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Scaling autonomous drones further down to the size of actual bees, he notes, would require solving other fundamental problems like contracting batteries. (他指出,要将自主无人机进一步缩小到真实蜜蜂的大小,还需要解决电池小型化这类基础问题。)”可推知,目前给蜜蜂大小的无人机制造体积足够小的电池还是一件很困难的事。

Learning a new language like English can be a challenge. 36 Classes are important, but so is consistent practice. It can even be enjoyable. Here are some guidelines to help you become a more effective English learner.
Study every day. Learning any new language takes time — more than 300 hours by some estimates. Rather than trying to cram a few hours of review once or twice a week, most experts recommend short, regular study sessions for better results. 37
38 Instead of focusing on one single task for your entire study session, try mixing things up. Study a little grammar, then do a short listening exercise, then perhaps read an article on the same topic. Don’t do too much at once; 20 minutes on three different exercises is plenty. The variety will keep you engaged and make studying more enjoyable.
Read, watch, and listen. Reading English-language newspapers and books, listening to music, or watching TV shows can also help you improve your written and verbal comprehension skills. 39
Write it down. Repetition is key as you’re learning English, so writing is an excellent way to practice. 40 By making writing a habit, you’ll also find your reading and comprehension skills improve over time. You might even discover you have a talent for writing.
A.Keep things fresh and varied.
B.Play vocabulary and grammar games.
C.But with regular study, it can be done.
D.It doesn’t matter whether you use a computer or pen and paper.
E.Non-native English speakers sometimes struggle with listening comprehension.
F.As little as 30 minutes a day can help you improve your English skills over time.
G.By doing so repeatedly, you’ll absorb things like speech patterns, accents, and grammar.
【答案】36.C 37.F 38.A 39.G 40.D
根据空前的“Learning a new language like English can be a challenge.(学习英语这样一门新语言会是一项挑战。)”以及空后的“Classes are important, but so is consistent practice.(课堂学习很重要,但持续练习同样重要。)” C选项“But with regular study, it can be done. (但是通过规律学习,这件事是可以实现的。)” 使用转折词承接上文挑战,自然引出下文学习建议,符合语境。
37.根据本段首句“Study every day.(每天学习。)”和空前的“Rather than trying to cram a few hours of review once or twice a week, most experts recommend short, regular study sessions for better results.(大多数专家建议进行短时、规律的学习以取得更好效果,而不是一周一两次突击复习几个小时。)” F选项“As little as 30 minutes a day can help you improve your English skills over time. (每天仅仅三十分钟,久而久之就能帮助你提升英语能力。)”承接专家给出的学习建议,给出具体的学习时长参考,契合本段主旨句,符合语境。
38.分析语篇可知,此处为本段的主旨句,和其他段落主旨句格式保持一致。根据空后的“Instead of focusing on one single task for your entire study session, try mixing things up.(不要在整个学习时段只专注单一任务,尝试穿插不同学习内容。)”以及“The variety will keep you engaged and make studying more enjoyable.(多样化的安排能让你保持专注,让学习更加有趣。)” A选项“Keep things fresh and varied. (保持学习内容新颖且多样化。)”概括本段全部内容,适合作为本段小标题,符合语境。
39.根据空前的“Reading English-language newspapers and books, listening to music, or watching TV shows can also help you improve your written and verbal comprehension skills.(阅读英文报纸和书籍、听音乐或者看电视节目,也能够帮助你提升书面和口头理解能力。)” G选项“By doing so repeatedly, you’ll absorb things like speech patterns, accents, and grammar. (反复进行这类练习,你会掌握语言句式、口音以及语法等知识。)”中By doing so指代前文各类英文视听阅读活动,阐述该学习方式的作用,符合语境。
40.根据空前的“Repetition is key as you’re learning English, so writing is an excellent way to practice.(重复是学习英语的关键,所以书写是绝佳的练习方式。)”以及空后的“By making writing a habit, you’ll also find your reading and comprehension skills improve over time.(养成书写习惯后,久而久之你会发现自身阅读与理解能力得到提升。)” D选项“It doesn’t matter whether you use a computer or pen and paper. (使用电脑还是纸笔书写都无关紧要。)”承接书写练习这一核心,说明书写载体没有限制,衔接前后内容,符合语境。

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mary had been preparing for the meeting for days. She had gone through piles of documents, rehearsing her presentation multiple times, and coordinating with various team members to ensure everything was perfect. Lost in her work, she didn’t notice how quickly the time was passing. Before she knew it, she was already running late. She rushed out for a taxi, her heart pounding in her chest, and luckily she caught sight of one. A taxi with its “for hire” sign lit up pulled up just in time. The driver, a middle-aged man with a thick beard and kind eyes, leaned over to roll down the passenger window. “Hop in, miss,” he said in a kind voice, sensing her urgency. Mary quickly slid into the backseat, muttering a hasty “Thank you.”
After 15 minutes, Mary stepped out of the taxi, seizing her bags and phone as she hurried across the street. Her mind was racing — she was late for the meeting, and her day has been chaotic from the start. As she rushed into the office building, she felt an alarming sensation, as if she had forgotten something important. She tried to ignore it, biting her lip nervously, her eyes darting around as if searching for a clue. She just hoped everything was in place.
An hour later, as the meeting came to an end, the uneasy feeling returned. It was stronger this time, refusing to be ignored. She absent-mindedly reached for her wallet and froze. Her wallet was missing. Panic surged through her, she searched her bag, turning it inside out, but the wallet was nowhere to be found. Her thoughts were so scrambled: Mary was trying to retrace her steps, and it hit her like a wave: She had left it in the taxi. Her heart sank as she imagined the trouble ahead — canceling credit cards, replacing her ID, and losing the cash she had just withdrawn. “Why did this have to happen today?” she muttered to herself, feeling overwhelmed by the series of misfortunes. She cursed her forgetfulness, worrying about the troublesome process of replacing everything.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Just as she was about to call the bank, her phone buzzed with a message.

Mary rushed forward to meet the driver.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Just as she was about to call the bank, her phone buzzed with a message. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from an unknown number: “Miss, you left your wallet in my taxi. I found it on the backseat. I’m at the parking lot near your office. Come when you’re free.” Mary’s heart leaped with relief. She quickly typed back, thanking the driver and saying she would come down immediately. Grabbing her coat, she rushed out of the building, the earlier chaos and anxiety fading away.
Mary rushed forward to meet the driver. It was the same kind-eyed, bearded driver who had given her a ride earlier. He smiled warmly and handed her the wallet. “You were in such a hurry, so I thought you might need this urgently,” he said. Mary took the wallet, checking that everything was still inside. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she offered him a reward, but he politely declined, saying, “Just be more careful next time.” Before he drove off, Mary snapped a photo of his license plate, determined to write a thank-you letter to his company. She walked back to her office, her heart full of warmth, realizing that kindness could often be found in the most unexpected places.

How to Become a Better English Learner
