Richard and Louise Arnold have established such an effective routine that they only need to put their garbage can on the side of the street once a year. Louise explained that making small monthly changes in her life has resulted in her family producing very little waste. She said, “It’s not as difficult as you might think if you start with small steps. We began with soap, switching from bath cream to natural soap without packaging. These bars are large enough that we cut them in half, using one for the sink and the other half for the shower. It’s both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.” “So it’s actually quite easy. Just go around your house and think of little things you can do gradually, and you’ll start noticing the difference,” Louise added. Currently, the couple takes recyclable waste to the tip, donates clothes to charity shops, and brings soft plastics and batteries to a shop that accepts them. In 2017, the couple established No Waste Living, which initially started as a weekend stall at the local market and has since developed into a website. Louise regularly writes a newsletter for her hundreds of subscribers. They also started selling eco-friendly products, ranging from non-chemical household cleaning and washing solutions for a “less toxic home” to bamboo washing-up brushes. Louise mentioned, “I started No Waste Living because I wanted to show our achievement s and lead by example.” Although the family occasionally faces criticism, Louise remains determined. She said, “The main point of contention(争论) for people regarding new waste rules is having to drive their waste to a recycling center, which adds to their already busy lives. However, in the long run, you will create more space in your home, save money, and spend less time dealing with garbage cans.” 24. How did the couple start their waste reduction journey? A. By replacing small soaps with large ones. B. By using a small amount of bath cream. C. By using unpackaged soap bars. D. By recycling soft plastics and batteries. 25. Why did the couple found No Waste Living? A. To bring eco-products to market. B. To inspire others to follow in their footsteps. C. To treat recyclable waste from the neighborhood. D. To answer the call of their subscribers. 26. Why do some people dislike new waste rules? A. They mean more work to deal with garbage. B. They increase the cost of garbage collection. C. They establish a set time for waste management. D. They limit the daily amount of garbage for collection. 27. What is the text mainly about? A. A business - minded couple. B. The “less poisonous home” concept. C. The global trend in recycling. D. A planet- friendly lifestyle. 24. C 25. B 26. A 27. While dolphins and parrots have been observed addressing each other by mimicking (模仿) the sound of others from their species, elephants are the first non-human animals known to use names that do not involve imitation, the researchers suggested. For the new study, a team of international researchers used an artificial intelligence algarithm (算法) to analyse the calls of two wild herds of African savannah elephants in Kenya. The research “not only shows that elephants use specific vocalizations (嗓音) for each individual, but that they recognize and react to a call addressed to them while ignoring those addressed to others,” lead study author Michael Pardo said. “This indicates that elephants can determine whether a call was intended for them just by hearing the call, even when out of its original context,” the behavioral ecologist at Colorado State University said in a statement. The researchers sifted through elephant “rumbles” recorded at Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve and Amboseli National Park between 1986 and 2022. Using a machine learning algorithm, they identified 469 distinct calls, which included 101elephants issuing a call and 117 receiving one. Elephants make a wide range of sounds, from loud trumpeting to rumbles so low that cannot be heard by the human ear. Names were not always used in the elephant calls. But when names were called out, it was often over a long distance, and when adults were addressing young elephants. Adults were also more likely to use names than calves, suggesting it could take years to learn this particular talent. The most common call was “a harmonically rich, low-frequency sound,” according to the study. 28. According to the first two paragraphs, what is special about elephants? A. They can imitate other species. B. They can mimic the sound of others. C. They can invent individual names to call. D. They can call out to each other very loudly. 29. What does the research show? A. Elephants use a fixed vocalization for each other. B. Elephants ignore the calls intended to themselves. C. Elephants recognize and react to the calls addressed to others. D. Elephants can tell whether they are addressed by hearing the call. 30. Which of the following is true? A. Elephants’ sounds can all be heard by human. B. Elephants prefer to call out names at any time. C. Adult elephants can call out young elephants’ names. D. Young elephants are born to use names to call each other. 31. In which column of a website can you see this passage? A. Nature. B. Health. C. Fashion. D. Education. C 29. D 30. C 31. 根据第一段“Elephants call out to each other using individual names that they invent for their fellows, a study said on Monday.(本周一公布的一项研究显示,大象会用自己发明的名字来称呼同伴)”可知,大象特别之处是可以发明单独的名字来叫。 根据第五段““This indicates that elephants can determine whether a call was intended for them just by hearing the call, even when out of its original context,” the behavioral ecologist at Colorado State University said in a statement.(科罗拉多州立大学的行为生态学家在一份声明中说:“这表明大象可以通过听到叫声来确定是否是针对它们的,即使不是在原始环境中。”)” 根据倒数第三段“But when names were called out, it was often over a long distance, and when adults were addressing young elephants.(但是当叫名字的时候,通常是在很远的地方,而且是在成年大象对小象说话的时候)”可知,C选项“成年大象能叫出小象的名字”正确。 根据第一段“Elephants call out to each other using individual names that they invent for their fellows, a study said on Monday.(本周一公布的一项研究显示,大象会用自己发明的名字来称呼同伴)”结合文章主要说明了研究发现大象会称呼同伴的名字,解释了研究开展的经过和发现。 A。 D Boys whose classmates think reading is for girls are more likely to perform poorly in this area, a new study suggests. To conduct the study, researchers tested a total of 1,508 fifth-grade students in 60 classes in Germany, who had an average age of 10. The children filled out questionnaires in which they ranked whether they thought boys or girls were better at reading, which gender read more, and which gender had more fun doing so. They also assessed their own enjoyment and skill in the activity, and completed reading tests. Past studies suggested the stereotypes (刻板印象) that reading is for girls and math is for boys are widespread, so the researchers wanted to see if this could contribute to a gap in skills. Their study revealed that boys who believed gender stereotypes about reading were less likely to see themselves as competent and motivated in this regard. The researchers also found boys whose classmates thought reading was for girls not only had similar attitudes about themselves, but also appeared to perform worse in tests. They discovered girls generally exhibited better reading and writing ability than boys as early as the fourth grade. And as they got older that achievement gap became increasingly obvious. At the same time, the gender stereotype didn’t appear to affect girls positively or negatively. However, the study’s authors acknowledged that their data might not be accurate as they relied on the children’s honesty. They’ll conduct further research. He always called me the nickname “Germy”, which meant “dirty”, instead of my real name “Jamie”. Besides, he was known as a trouble-maker in school. So when the head teacher Mr. Smith asked Del to come to his office, I naturally thought that Del had done something mean to someone. Through the window, I caught sight of a smaller boy crying. Del seemed unhappy, too. He did not return to class that day. All of us were discussing what had happened to him. What else could such an annoying boy do? “He must have hit the boy and was sent home,” I whispered to my friends. Their eyes widened. It felt good to see them so interested in what I said. The next morning, the whole school was talking about Del being expelled(开除) for beating up a kid. I was surprised that my assumptions were passed on so quickly. So when Del walked into the classroom, all the kids were shocked. The kids next to him shift ed their desks away. “What’s your problem?” Del asked. “I don’t want you to attack me,” one kid said. Some laughed. “Yeah, I might,” said Del. I could tell he was joking, but many kids thought he admitted he did beat up someone. During recess(课间休息), Del tried to join the kickball game. “Neither team wants you,” one of the players said. “Why?” Del asked, looking confused. “I always play with you guys.” They ignored him and went on playing. Del sat by himself while the rest of the school enjoyed their recess away from him. Del looked lonely and sad, much different from before. I started to feel sorry for him. Later that day, I learned what really happened. The kid was Del’s little brother and he was crying because their mother fell ill and was sent to hospital. I felt even sorrier for what I said before. I started a rumor(谣言). At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】At recess the next day, I saw Del sitting alone watching the kickball game. Not wanting him to feel left out, I walked over and sat down beside him. “Hey Germy,” he said. “My name is Jamie.” I replied. I wanted to apologize for starting that rumor about him, but I was too ashamed to say it out loudly. “Del, do you want to play kickball with us?” I asked instead. He looked surprised but happy at the same time. After a moment of silence, he nodded his head. Now that Del had forgiven me, I decided to do more before the recess was over. I stood up and shouted to the other kids, “Guys, come here! Let’s play kickball together! ” Some of them hesitated, but they eventually joined us. Del was smiling again and so were we. As we played, I realized that Del wasn’t as bad as I thought he was. He was just a normal kid who wanted to have fun and be accepted by others. From then on, whenever someone tried to start a rumor about him, I would stand up for him and tell them the truth about Del. We became good friends, and I learned an important lesson about judging people based on rumors. 说:say/put it 2.道歉:apologize/say sorry 3.接受:accept/recognize 4. 惊讶的:surprised/astonished 2. 快乐的:happy/pleased/delighted 【点睛】 [高分句型1]. B A couple has recently placed their garbage can out for collection for the first time in 14 months, all thanks to their recycling skills. C Elephants call out to each other using individual names that they invent for their fellows, a study said on Monday. A. Nature. B. Health. C. Fashion. D. Education. D Boys whose classmates think reading is for girls are more likely to perform poorly in this area, a new study suggests. One of the authors of the study said, “To reduce socially determined gender disparities (不一致) in reading, it may help to create contexts that discourage students from acting on their stereotypical beliefs.” The study is the latest to examine how gender stereotypes affect young people. Late last year, a separate team of researchers found teaching teenage boys about gender equality could prevent them from being violent. 32. What were the children in the study asked to do? A Read something aloud. B. Evaluate their reading ability. C. Learn to read for pleasure. D. Test their partners’ reading skills. 33. What results did the new study find concerning the gender stereotypes? A. Boys and girls had the same ability to learn. B. Gender gap widened even more with age. C. Reading was for girls and math was for boys. D. Math could make girls more competitive. 34. What was the new study’s limitation according to its authors? A. Their findings weren’t immediately applicable. B They studied only small groups of school kids. C. The information they collected might be wrong. D. They only focused on the vast majority of boys. 35. What does the last paragraph talk about? A. Strengthening the concept of gender equality. B. Analyzing the harm of gender stereotypes. C. Methods of giving up stereotypical beliefs. D. Reasons for producing gender disparities. Anxiety is a normal feeling characterized by worry or fear. Later that day I learned what really happened. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
