The Power of Body Language
Body language plays a vital role in our daily communication. It not only helps express our feelings and attitudes but also makes what we say more vivid and convincing. For example, a warm smile conveys friendliness, and steady eye contact builds trust.
However, body language varies across cultures. In some countries, a thumbsup indicates approval, but in others, it may be offensive. Similarly, nodding usually means “yes” in many cultures, yet in parts of Greece and Bulgaria, it can mean “no”. Therefore, understanding these differences is key to effective crosscultural communication.
Paragraph 1:
Then, all of a sudden, he knew what he could draw. He started with a picture of himself opening presents in front of a Christmas tree. Then one of him and his mom camping. Then there was one of Grandpa, standing tall and smiling, holding out a stuffed toy—Big Dog. The lines of Big Dog came easily, as if Jet had memorized every detail. By the time class was over, Jet had a small album stretched out and was ready to surprise his mom. When Jet’s mom picked him up from school, however, Jet’s eyes were caught by Big Dog in the back seat. He squeezed Big Dog around the neck and hugged it tightly, feeling the familiar softness against his cheek. But then, something inside him shifted. He remembered the album in his backpack.
Paragraph 2:
Jet gave his mom a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise for you too!”. Digging into his backpack, Jet pulled out the small album. “I know we lost a lot of things in the fire, and the photo albums were really special to you.” he said in a soft voice. As Jet’s mom flipped through the pictures, she laughed and cried. There she saw the drawings of their favorite memories. Each picture captured a moment they had shared, a moment they thought they’d lost in the fire. That night, after they unpacked more of the boxes, Jet carefully placed Big Dog back on the shelf above his bed. Maybe the fire had taken some things, but it hadn’t taken what mattered most—their love, their memories, and the chance to keep making new ones.

More than 20 years ago, if someone had told Chao Ziyi and Chao Ziwei — two brothers from Henan, who earned their living by making large bowls — that one day they would become artists, they would have laughed it off.
But life often takes unexpected turns. Today, the brothers’ ceramic works are exhibited both in China and abroad. Although the brothers have never studied art in a formal school, they have created their own unique ceramic style. They also lecture at Jingdezhen Ceramic University in Jiangxi. An exhibition now underway at the university’s art museum tells the story of their artistic path, showing how these two craftsmen entered the world of ceramic art with help from professional artists and teachers.
The exhibition features more than 1,500 works, with a great variety of subjects — books, shoes, tractors, old gatehouses, and animals. Ceramics, deeply connected to Chinese tradition, become a way for them to express personal memories and share social experiences in a modern way.
The brothers still do every step of the ceramic-making process themselves, just as they did in their early years in the family trade. Over time, they have continued to challenge themselves, exploring new sizes and structures. By copying the textured look of bronze and rusted iron, they give their works a fresh, contemporary feel.
Professor Lyu Pinchang, an artist who once guided them at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, says the brothers have moved from strict control of technique to embracing uncertainty, which helped them understand ceramics more deeply. He adds that they have always stayed true to their work — whether making bowls in the past or creating art now — and their devotion sets a great example for young students.
Rising from humble beginnings as bowl makers, the Chao brothers have brought a renewed spirit of craftsmanship into contemporary ceramic art.
24.What was the Chao brothers’ life like over 20 years ago?
A.Ordinary. B.Adventurous. C.Colorful. D.Ambitious.
25.What do we know about the exhibition on show?
A.It reflects their skills of modern art. B.It covers a wide range of subjects.
C.It tells their memories of hard life. D.It shows their preference of nature.
26.What does Professor Lyu Pinchang think of the two bothers?
A.Innovative and devoted. B.Curious and productive.
C.Determined and brave. D.Kind-hearted and strict.
27.What can we learn from the two bothers’ story?
A.Life is a struggle, not a race. B.Love breaks down barriers.
C.Every trade has its master. D.Education is the key to success.

Body Language: The Unspoken Dialogue is a fascinating book, exploring the silent language we all speak — the gestures, postures and expressions represented in over two hundred artworks from galleries worldwide. This work is designed to make human behavior comprehensible to everyday readers through artistic depictions of body language across cultures. In these artistic representations of non-verbal communication, we recognize universal human experiences that cross cultural and historical boundaries.
In this “visual guide to body language”, artworks are carefully selected and arranged to highlight connections across different periods and societies. We observe scenes of people interacting in various social situations — from formal handshakes in business settings to intimate embraces between loved ones. Individuals are portrayed in numerous positions — leaning forward in interest, crossing arms in defense, or nodding in agreement. Though these artworks might have been created centuries apart, they capture moments of human interaction that remain familiar to us all.
Body language in artworks often serves to reveal the inner world of the subjects — their confidence, anxiety, or social status. Before the scientific study of non-verbal communication, artists intuitively (凭直觉地) understood and captured these subtle signals in their works. In contemporary art, as our understanding of body language has deepened, artists have become more intentional in using gestures and postures as primary elements in their creations — making body language itself the subject matter of their works.
Some might assume that in our digital age of video calls and virtual meetings, the study of physical body language has become less relevant. From a modern perspective, while technology has changed how we communicate, non-verbal communication remains as significant as any emoji or digital reaction. To fully understand human interaction, we must observe the physical dimension: the eye contact, the postures, and the gestures employed during conversation. And compared to our increasingly digital communications where expressions can be hidden, in-person interaction still provides the richest, most immediate understanding of unspoken feelings.
28.What is one purpose of the book Body Language: The Unspoken Dialogue?
A.To argue that digital communication is less effective.
B.To list the most valuable artworks in world galleries.
C.To teach artists how to create better body language in their works.
D.To enable ordinary readers to understand human behavior through artworks.
29.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “depictions”?
A.intentions B.representations C.shortages D.conclusions
30.What can we learn about body language in artworks from different periods?
A.They all show negative emotions of the subjects.
B.They can’t be understood by people in modern times.
C.They have completely different meanings in different times.
D.They present moments of human interaction familiar to us all.
31.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.It is difficult to discover intentionally hidden emotions.
B.Digital reaction will replace face-to-face communication.
C.Body language is still of great importance even in the digital age.
D.Eye contact is the first step to reveal the personal feelings.
D
People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified (多样化) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
32.The discovery shows that Westerners ________.
A.consider facial expressions universally reliable
B.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
C.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
D.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth
33.What were the people asked to do in the study?
A.To classify some face pictures.
B.To make a face at each other.
C.To get their faces impressive.
D.To observe the researchers’ faces.
34.What key weakness might critics highlight about the study’s design?
A.Dependence on subjective emotion categorization.
B.Lack of more diverse American cultural groups.
C.Use of posed photos instead of natural expressions.
D.Failure to track eye movements during observation.
35.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions
B.The Eye as the Window to the Soul
C.Effective Methods to Develop Social Skills
D.How to Increase Cross-cultural Understanding
In a social situation, eye contact can show that you are paying attention in a friendly way. But it can also mean differently such as when a political candidate turns toward their competitor during a debate with a challenging look. Here’s what hard science reveals about eye contact.
We know that a typical infant will instinctively gaze into its mother’s eyes, and she will look back. This mutual gaze is a major part of the attachment between mother and child. 36 It can catch someone’s attention in a crowded room. “Eye contact and smile” can signal availability and confidence.
37 Neuroscientist Bonnie Augeung found that the hormone oxytocin (催产素) increased the amount of eye contact from men toward the interviewer during a brief interview when the direction of their gaze was recorded. This was also found in high-functioning men with some autistic spectrum symptoms (自闭症谱系症状), who may tend to avoid eye contact.
Eye contact can also be aggressive. With the use of eye-tracking technology, Julia Minson of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government concluded that eye contact can signal very different kinds of messages, depending on the situation. Eye contact may be a sign of connection or trust in friendly situations. 38 “Whether you’ re a politician or a parent, it might be helpful to keep in mind that trying to maintain eye contact may backfire if you’ re trying to convince someone who has a different set of beliefs than you,” said Minson.
Eye fixations are brief. When we look at a face or a picture, our eyes pause on one spot at a time, often on the eyes or mouth. These pauses typically occur about three times per second, and the eyes then jump to another spot, until several important points in the image are registered like a series of shots. 39 And it is the subject of current research.
In people who score high in a test of neuroticism (神经过敏症), eye contact triggered more activity associated with avoidance, according to the Finnish researcher Jari Hietanen and colleagues. 40 People who scored high for negative emotions like anxiety looked at others for shorter periods of time and reported more comfortable feelings when others did not look directly at them.
A.Their brain reactions also differ from other people.
B.Biological factors behind eye contact are being investigated.
C.How the whole image is then assembled and perceived is still a mystery.
D.For adults, looking at people pleasantly can be a friendly sign of attention.
E.Specific brain regions that respond are being explored using advanced methods.
F.Our findings indicate people do feel different when they are the centre of attention.
G.It’s more likely to be related to dominance of threat in conflicting situations, though.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to attend an international summer camp. It was exciting, yet I soon encountered an unexpected challenge. My roommate, Ahmed from Egypt, was friendly, but I found his habit of standing 41 close, when talking to me, hard to accept. I instinctively stepped back, which seemed to 42 him. The atmosphere grew tense, and I began to 43 my own behavior.
Later, in a culture-sharing session, I learned that in many Arab countries, standing close 44 trust and warmth, while in my culture, more personal space is preferred. This was not about right or wrong; it 45 different cultural norms. I realized my step back might have been 46 as a sign of coldness or rejection.
With this new 47 , I decided to bridge the gap. I explained my feelings to Ahmed 48 , and he shared his perspective. We agreed to 49 a middle ground. This experience taught me that cultural differences, though sometimes causing 50 , can lead to deeper understanding if we approach them with 51 minds. It is not about changing who we are, but about 52 the beautiful diversity of human interaction. Understanding begins when we choose to 53 beyond our own perspectives. After all, in our 54 world, the ability to navigate (驾驭) cultural differences is not just a skill, but a 55 for sincere connection.

Before I heard the statistic (统计) that “only seven percent of a message is conveyed through words, and the other 93 percent comes from nonverbal communication”, I 56 (know) something about body language. If we want 57 (express) our true feelings, body language plays 58 important role. Nonverbal clues such as tone of voice and 59 (gesture) play their part. Maybe you are truly 60 (amaze) at how much body language can convey, but that’s what happens. A simple example of body language is a genuine smile to show friendliness. 61 (similar), it can be an upright stance to convey interest or a tilt (倾斜) of the head, 62 shows you’re thinking. When you can read signs like these, you can understand the complete message that someone is telling you. You'll pay more attention to people’s reactions 63 what you say and do, too. And you’ll be able to adjust your body language to appear more positive and approachable. Being aware of other people’s body language means 64 (notice) unspoken emotions and reactions. It’s a 65 (value) form of feedback, but it can easily be missed if you don't know what to look out for.

“The cleaners said I could pick our stuff today,” Jet’s mom said on the drive to school.
“Do you think they were able to clean Big Dog?” Jet asked, trying not to sound too worried.
But he was worried. Big Dog was his favourite stuffed animal. Grandpa had won it for him at the fair when he was five years old. Jet was eight now, and he didn’t need to sleep with it or anything. But he did need it. He needed it to sit on the shelf above his bed—the shelf that was now charred (烧焦的) by the house fire.
“I’m not sure what they were able to save,” Mom said. “They said they weren’t able to save our photo albums. I sure will miss those pictures.” Jet could tell she was really sad.
“I’ll pick you up after school, and we’ll go through the boxes together. Then we’ll see if your Big Dog can come back to us.” Mom said before she hugged him good-bye and drove off.
Jet tried to focus on his schoolwork all day, but he couldn’t keep his mind off Big Dog. He clutched (紧抓) his backpack through the halls as if he were carrying his old stuffed friend. During library time, he checked out a book about dogs. At break time, his friends were playing games while his mind was completely occupied by Big Dog.
RRRRRRINNNGGG! Time for art class.
Mr. Light said it was “artist’s choice” day, so they could work on whatever they wished.
Jet stared at an empty page. He thought of his mom picking up the boxes of things that had been damaged by the fire. Then he remembered how sad his mom was about the photo albums. Most things could be replaced at the store. But the pictures were gone forever. If only the photo album could somehow be saved, Jet thought. He wished there was a way to get those memories back, to bring a smile to his mom’s face again.

18.What is mainly talked about in the program?
A.How to keep goldfish. B.How to choose goldfish. C.How to clean goldfish containers.
19.How many pieces of tips are given by the speaker?
A.Two. B.Four. C.Three.
20.What will the speaker do later?
A.Show a video. B.Give some examples. C.Explain in more detail.
【答案】18.A 19.C 20.A
M: Morning everyone. Today we’re going to talk about how to raise goldfish. Speaking of goldfish, this animal is very common to see everywhere. With a little bit of care, your goldfish can live much longer than you might expect. First, choose the largest possible container you can afford and decorate it with objects such as small rocks and plants. However, be careful not to put sharp objects in the container that may harm your fish. Second, feed them only as much as they can eat in a few minutes and immediately remove any leftover food. The most important thing is to clean the container and change the water at least once every week. To make it easier for the fish to adjust to the new water, partial water changes are much better than complete water changes. By doing all these things, you can be sure your fish will survive into their golden years. Later, we’ll watch a short video so you can have a better understanding of what I’ve said.

【答案】24.A 25.B 26.A 27.C
根据第一段“More than 20 years ago, if someone had told Chao Ziyi and Chao Ziwei — two brothers from Henan, who earned their living by making large bowls — that one day they would become artists, they would have laughed it off.(二十多年前,如果有人告诉来自河南、靠做大碗为生的晁家两兄弟,有一天他们会成为艺术家,他们会一笑置之。)”
根据第三段“The exhibition features more than 1,500 works, with a great variety of subjects — books, shoes, tractors, old gatehouses, and animals.(展览展出了1500多件作品,题材丰富多样——书籍、鞋子、拖拉机、老门楼和动物。)”
根据第五段“Professor Lyu Pinchang...says the brothers have moved from strict control of technique to embracing uncertainty, which helped them understand ceramics more deeply.(吕品昌教授……说兄弟俩从对技术的严格控制转向拥抱不确定性,这帮助他们更深入地理解了陶瓷艺术。)”以及“their devotion sets a great example for young students.(他们的奉献精神为年轻学生树立了很好的榜样。)”
根据第一段中的“two brothers from Henan, who earned their living by making large bowls(来自河南、靠做大碗为生的两兄弟)”可知,他们的起点是普通的手工艺人。根据最后一段中的“Rising from humble beginnings as bowl makers, the Chao brothers have brought a renewed spirit of craftsmanship into contemporary ceramic art.(从制作大碗的卑微起点出发,晁氏兄弟为当代陶瓷艺术带来了焕然一新的工匠精神。)” 根据第四段中的“Over time, they have continued to challenge themselves, exploring new sizes and structures.(随着时间的推移,他们不断挑战自我,探索新的尺寸和结构。)”
C
根据第一段“This work is designed to make human behavior comprehensible to everyday readers through artistic depictions of body language across cultures. (这部作品旨在通过对不同文化的肢体语言进行艺术描绘,让普通读者理解人类行为)”可知,这本书的创作目的是帮助普通读者借助艺术作品理解人类行为。
29.词句猜测题。根据第一段“This work is designed to make human behavior comprehensible to everyday readers through artistic depictions of body language across cultures. (这部作品旨在通过对不同文化的肢体语言进行艺术depictions,让普通读者理解人类行为)”以及后文“In these artistic representations of non-verbal communication (在这些非语言交流的艺术呈现中)”可知,前后两句句式一致、语义呼应。depictions和representations表达同一含义,均指“描绘、呈现”。
30.细节理解题。根据第二段“Though these artworks might have been created centuries apart, they capture moments of human interaction that remain familiar to us all. (尽管这些艺术品的创作时间可能相隔数百年,但它们捕捉的人类互动瞬间,依旧是我们所有人都熟悉的场景)”可知,不同时期艺术作品中的肢体语言展现了大众熟悉的人类互动瞬间。
31.主旨大意题。根据第四段“while technology has changed how we communicate, non-verbal communication remains as significant as any emoji or digital reaction. (虽然科技改变了我们的沟通方式,但非语言交流依旧和任何表情符号或数字化反馈同等重要)”可知,本段主要讲述即使在数字时代,肢体语言依然至关重要。
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.C 35.A
根据第三段中“Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.(西方人会同等地关注眼睛和嘴巴,而东方人更关注眼睛,忽视嘴巴)”可知,西方人对眼睛和嘴巴给予同等的关注。故选D。
根据第五段中“The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted, angry, or neutral.(研究人员记录了13名西方白人和13名东亚人的眼球运动,这些受试者观察带有表情的面部照片并将其分类为开心、悲伤、惊讶、恐惧、厌恶、愤怒或中性,以此研究面部表情识别中的文化差异)”可知,研究中受试者被要求对一些面部照片进行分类。故选A。
根据第一段中“People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.(东亚人比欧洲人更难分辨面部表情,《当代生物学》在线发表的一份新报告解释了原因)”以及全文围绕东西方人识别面部表情的文化差异展开分析可知,本文核心是讲述解读情绪时的文化差异。A选项“Cultural Differences in Reading Emotions(解读情感的文化差异)”最适合作为标题。故选A。
【答案】36.D 37.B 38.G 39.C 40.A
根据上文“We know that a typical infant will instinctively gaze into its mother’s eyes, and she will look back. This mutual gaze is a major part of the attachment between mother and child.(我们知道,大多数婴儿会本能地凝视母亲的眼睛,而母亲也会回以同样的目光。这种相互凝视是母子之间亲密关系的重要组成部分)”以及后文“It can catch someone’s attention in a crowded room. “Eye contact and smile” can signal availability and confidence.(它能在拥挤的房间里吸引他人的注意。“眼神交流和微笑”能够传达出开放和自信的态度)”可知,前文讲母婴之间的对视依恋,后文讲对视在社交中吸引注意力、传递自信的作用,空格处从婴儿过渡到成年人的情况,D选项“对成年人来说,愉快地注视他人是传达注意力的友好信号”符合逻辑。
37.根据后文“Neuroscientist Bonnie Augeung found that the hormone oxytocin (催产素) increased the amount of eye contact from men toward the interviewer during a brief interview when the direction of their gaze was recorded. This was also found in high-functioning men with some autistic spectrum symptoms (自闭症谱系症状), who may tend to avoid eye contact.(神经科学家邦妮·奥根发现,在一次简短的访谈中,当记录参与者的眼神方向时,催产素这种激素会促使男性与访谈者进行更多的目光接触。这一现象同样在一些具有自闭症谱系症状但能力较强的男性身上被观察到,这类男性通常会避免目光接触)”可知,后文提到神经科学家研究催产素(生理荷尔蒙)对视的影响,属于对视背后的生理因素研究,B选项“对视背后的生理因素正在被研究”刚好引出下文内容。
38.根据上文“Eye contact can also be aggressive. With the use of eye-tracking technology, Julia Minson of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government concluded that eye contact can signal very different kinds of messages, depending on the situation. Eye contact may be a sign of connection or trust in friendly situations.(眼神交流也可能具有攻击性。通过运用眼动追踪技术,哈佛大学肯尼迪政府学院的朱莉娅·明森得出结论:在不同的情境下,眼神交流所传达的信息会截然不同。在友好的场合,眼神交流可能表示着联系或信任)”以及后文““Whether you’ re a politician or a parent, it might be helpful to keep in mind that trying to maintain eye contact may backfire if you’ re trying to convince someone who has a different set of beliefs than you,” said Minson.(米森说:“无论你是政客还是家长,或许都应该记住这样一个道理:如果试图与持有与自己不同信念的人进行交流,而却一直试图保持眼神接触,那么这种做法可能会适得其反。”)”
39.根据上文“Eye fixations are brief. When we look at a face or a picture, our eyes pause on one spot at a time, often on the eyes or mouth. These pauses typically occur about three times per second, and the eyes then jump to another spot, until several important points in the image are registered like a series of shots.(眼睛的注视时间很短暂。
40.根据上文“In people who score high in a test of neuroticism (神经过敏症), eye contact triggered more activity associated with avoidance, according to the Finnish researcher Jari Hietanen and colleagues.(芬兰研究人员贾里·海廷纳及其团队的研究表明,在神经质测试中得分较高的人(即那些容易产生焦虑等负面情绪的人),与回避行为相关的活动在与他人进行眼神接触时会更加活跃)”以及后文“People who scored high for negative emotions like anxiety looked at others for shorter periods of time and reported more comfortable feelings when others did not look directly at them.(那些在负面情绪(如焦虑)方面得分较高的人,与他人目光接触的时间会更短,并且当他人不直接看向他们时,他们会感觉更加舒适)”可知,前文说神经质特质的人,对视会触发更多和回避相关的大脑活动,后文举例说这类人更不喜欢长时间对视,A选项“他们的大脑反应本身就和其他人不同”承上启下,符合逻辑。

The Power of Body Language
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The Power of Body Language
Body language plays a vital role in our daily communication. It not only helps express our feelings and attitudes but also makes what we say more vivid and convincing. For example, a warm smile conveys friendliness, and steady eye contact builds trust.
However, body language varies across cultures. In some countries, a thumbs-up indicates approval, but in others, it may be offensive. Similarly, nodding usually means “yes” in many cultures, yet in parts of Greece and Bulgaria, it can mean “no”. Therefore, understanding these differences is key to effective cross-cultural communication.

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Then, all of a sudden, he knew what he could draw.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Jet gave his mom a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise for you too! ”.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He remembered the album in his backpack.Paragraph 2:
Jet gave his mom a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise for you too!” Digging into his backpack, Jet pulled out the small album.
