二、阅读理解
(本题7.5分)People who don’t feel confident in social situations often have trouble interacting with others. However, anyone can boost their confidence by ensuring their, body language conveys a positive message.Practice these gestures and movements to project an airport confidence.
Lean Forward
When you are in a conversation, leaning forward indicates interest and attention, while maintaining distance indicates that you are disinterested. Research suggests that nonverbal signals such as leaning forward and facing straight ahead help convey feelings of interest.
Slow Your Movements
Fast movements make you appear more anxious. Everything from hand gestures to your walking pace can make a difference; slow down and notice how you feel more confident when you take your time.
The key, however, is to maintain other signals like eye contact and posture while moving more slowly. Slow movements combined with poor eye contact and slouched (耷拉的) posture may cause people to see you less confident.
Keep Your Chin Up
Do you look at the ground when you are walking or talking? Instead, keeping your head up and facing your conversation partner conveys interest and confidence. It might feel unnatural initially, but you will eventually become used to this more confident pose.
Give a Firm Handshake
A weak handshake is a sign of a lack of confidence, so offer a firm hand when meeting others. How long your handshake lasts can also influence how people perceive you.
Research has found that the length of a normal handshake is around three seconds or less. Handshakes lasting longer than three seconds are associated with less enjoyment of the interaction and more anxiety.
21.(2.5分)Which way of walking conveys confidence?
A.Walk fast with head straight up.
B.Move fast with a leaning posture.
C.Walk slowly with proper eye contact.
D.Move slowly with maintained distance.
22.(2.5分)Which body language requires considering the length of time?
A.Lean Forward. B.Slow Your Movements.
C.Keep Your Chin Up. D.Give a Firm Handshake.
23.(2.5分)Who is the text intended for?
A.Those who have a passion for body language.
B.Those who run projects about body language.
C.Those who lack confidence in communication.
D.Those who desire to boost their language skills.
(本题10分)During my summer job in Tokyo last year, I discovered how easily body language can create misunderstandings across cultures. After doing well in my interview, I confidently entered the meeting room for my final presentation, eager to share my carefully prepared sales strategy.
When the CEO asked about my approach, I sat back in my chair and crossed my arms — a posture (姿势) I considered thoughtful and professional in America. The atmosphere changed immediately. My boss’ smile froze, and the CEO’s clear disapproval appeared. I later learned that in Japan, crossed arms signal arrogance (傲慢) or disagreement — completely contrary to the professional image I wanted to convey.
Despite my perfect PowerPoint presentation, I couldn’t undo that inappropriate behavior. While I didn’t recognize my cultural mistake at the moment, I could easily feel the tension mounting as I continued speaking.
My Japanese colleague Rina quietly demonstrated to me the right way to behave during the Q&A session. She rested her hands on her lap and leaned forward slightly to show engagement. I immediately mirrored her posture. As I adapted my body language to Japanese ways, the manager visibly relaxed. This experience taught me that true cultural fluency extends far beyond language proficiency or technical expertise.
Now, I make it a priority to research local customs before any international meeting. My studies have revealed fascinating cultural differences. Brazilians maintain smaller personal space during conversations. Germans value firm handshakes with sustained eye contact. And the French may exchange cheek kisses in business settings — but only after establishing close professional relationships.
This journey has shown me that authentic professional competence requires mindfulness not just of our words, but of our physical presence across cultural contexts. The ability to “speak” through appropriate body language is just as crucial as verbal (言语的) communication in today’s global business environment, and sometimes even more important than spoken language.
24.(2.5分)What caused the sudden tension in the meeting?
A.The author’s improper behavior.
B.The assistant’s technical errors.
C.The CEO’s unreasonable demand.
D.The coworker’s sudden interruption.
25.(2.5分)How did Rina help the author during the Q&A session?
A.By simplifying his slides. B.By correcting his grammar.
C.By modeling proper postures. D.By translating the questions.
26.(2.5分)Why does the author mention different countries’ customs?
A.To share his learning process.
B.To prepare for his next journey.
C.To appreciate uniqueness of culture.
D.To show diversity of body language.
27.(2.5分)What lesson has the author learned in Tokyo?
A.Good business is built on good language.
B.Wisdom counts more than spoken language.
C.A country’s language is as important as its culture.
D.Body language is vital in cross-cultural communication.
(本题10分)We all know that a powerful body posture may help people feel more confident. But will it work on students? A new study by researchers from the Martin Luther University (MLU) of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the connection. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.
Some body postures don’t need further explanation. When a man sits with his arms crossed behind his head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one’s body and a bent back, on the other hand, typically mean anxiety and insecurity. “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also have a great influence on how a person feels,” explains Robert Körner from the Institute of Psychology at MLU.
Research on powerful body postures tries to find out the extent to which a certain body posture might influence a person’s feelings and self-confidence. Up to now, most of the research has been about studying the effects on adults. Körner’s study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to recognize and understand the body postures of others,” the professor adds.
The researchers carried out their experiment with 108 fourth graders. One group was to assume two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms folded in front of them and their heads down. The children then finished a series of psychological tests. The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school. “Here, powerful body postures had the strongest effect on the children’s self-confidence,” says Körner.
“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals.
28.(2.5分)How does Körner feel about the short-term effects of powerful postures?
A.He thinks they are useless.
B.He believes they are significant enough for teachers to adopt in class.
C.He argues they are too strong and harmful.
D.He claims they last for years.
29.(2.5分)What is the new research on powerful body postures mainly about?
A.What the most popular postures are.
B.How children’s postures differ from adults’.
C.Why body language can express a person’s feelings.
D.What effects postures have on students’ feelings.
30.(2.5分)What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Strange. B.Obvious.
C.Unclear. D.Manageable.
31.(2.5分)What is Körner’s attitude to teachers’ applying the findings in teaching?
A.Worried. B.Doubtful.
C.Objective. D.Supportive.
(本题10分)People from East Asia tend to have more difficulty than those from Europe in distinguishing facial expressions — and a new report published online in Current Biology explains why.
Rachael Jack, University of Glasgow researcher, said that rather than scanning evenly across a face as Westerners do, Easterners fix their attention on the eyes.
“We show that Easterners and Westerners look at different face features to read facial expressions,” Jack said. “Westerners look at the eyes and the mouth in equal measure, whereas Easterners favor the eyes and overlook the mouth.”
According to Jack and her colleagues, the discovery shows that human communication of emotion is more complex than previously believed. As a result, facial expressions that had been considered universally recognizable cannot be used to reliably convey emotion in cross-cultural situations.
The researchers studied cultural differences in the recognition of facial expressions by recording the eye movements of 13 Western Caucasian and 13 East Asian people while they observed pictures of expressive faces and put them into categories: happy, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的), angry, or neutral. They compared how accurately participants read those facial expressions using their particular eye movement strategies.
It turned out that Easterners focused much greater attention on the eyes and made significantly more errors than Westerners did. “The cultural difference in eye movements that they show is probably a reflection of cultural difference in facial expressions,” Jack said. “Our data suggest that whereas Westerners use the whole face to convey emotion, Easterners use the eyes more and mouth less.”
In short, the data show that facial expressions are not universal signals of human emotion. From here on, examining how cultural factors have diversified (多样化) these basic social skills will help our understanding of human emotion. Otherwise, when it comes to communicating emotions across cultures, Easterners and Westerners will find themselves lost in translation.
32.(2.5分)The discovery shows that Westerners ________.
A.consider facial expressions universally reliable
B.observe the eyes and the mouth in different ways
C.have more difficulty in recognizing facial expressions
D.pay equal attention to the eyes and the mouth

A.To classify some face pictures.
B.To make a face at each other.
C.To get their faces impressive.
D.To observe the researchers’ faces.

A.Dependence on subjective emotion categorization.
B.Lack of more diverse American cultural groups.

1. Posture and Confidence

3. Gestures and Expression
Gestures and facial expressions complement verbal communication and provide additional context. 39(2.5分) Smiling, nodding, or using open palms creates a friendly, approachable atmosphere. On the other hand, crossed arms or a tense facial expression may unintentionally communicate defensiveness or discomfort.
In conclusion, mastering body language is crucial for effective communication. 40(2.5分) Ultimately, these non-verbal cues help us express ourselves more confidently and clearly.
A.Keeping proper eye contact demonstrates focus and consideration.
B.The way you stand or sit can significantly affect how others perceive you.

I never felt an urge to learn any sign language before. My entire family is hearing, and so are all my friends. The 43 languages were enough in all my interactions. Little did I know that I would discover my 44 for ASL.
The 45 began during my first week at college. I watched as the ASL Club 46 their translation of a song. Both the hand movements and the very idea of communicating without speaking 47 me. What I saw was completely unlike anything I had experienced in the past. This newness just left me 48 more.
After that, feeling the need to explore further, I decided to drop in on one of ASL club’s meetings. I only learned how to 49 the alphabet (字母) that day. Yet instead of being 50 by my slow progress, I was excited. I then made it a point to 51 those meetings and learn all I could.
The following term, I 52 an ASL class. The professor was deaf and any talking was 53 . I soon realized that the silence was not unpleasant. 54 , if there had been any talking, it would have caused us to learn less. Now, I appreciate the silence and the 55 way of communication it opens.

四、语法填空
(本题15分)阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Meta communication is like a secret language that we all use without 56(1.5分) (realize) it. Think of it as the “how” of what we say, not just the “what”. When we talk, we don’t just use words. We use our tone, our body language, 57(1.5分) even the pauses between words. All of these things send messages. That’s meta communication.
Let me share an example. I once had an 58(1.5分) (employ) who always said, “Sure, no problem” whenever I gave her a task. It sounded great, didn’t it? But her slumped shoulders (下垂的肩膀) and quiet sigh told 59(1.5分) different story. Her words were positive, but her body language revealed she was stressed. This is meta communication in action. The literal meaning of her words was positive, but the real message 60(1.5分) (hide) in how she said it.
Understanding meta communication can make you a better leader, friend and problem solver, 61(1.5分) helps you understand what people really mean, not just what they say. So next time you are in a conversation, pay attention 62(1.5分) more than just the words. Listen to the tone, watch the body language and 63(1.5分) (face) expressions, and trust your instincts (直觉). You might be surprised by what you discover!
Everyone conveys (传递) their messages 64(1.5分) (different). Use this knowledge to understand others better and to express 65(1.5分) (you) more clearly. That’s the real power of meta communication.

六、书面表达
67.(本题25分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in Grade One, most of my classmates didn’t like to play with me because I was always shy and silent. However, I always got high grades in both exams and activities. Gradually, I got the respect of my classmates. And my teachers repeatedly praised me and asked me to assist my classmates in their study. Besides, there were various competitions in my school and I was always chosen as the representative of our class.
However, life is not always happy. There are times when we experience ups and downs. When I was in Grade Three, a student named Vannilyn came to our school, and she was placed in the class next to mine. Months passed and the result of the mid-term examination was released. I was still the No. 1 in my class and I heard that Vannilyn was the No. 1 in her class. However, I just ignored her and in my thought, I was still superior because I was a seasoned pupil.
There were times when I didn’t want to open my books to read and study for our next day’s lesson. When I did my homework, I became careless and I didn’t even mind whether my handwriting looked beautiful or not. What’s worse, I gradually became addicted to computer games. And because of that, my teachers began to criticise me and what made me angry was that they always mentioned Vannilyn in front of me!
I got annoyed every time my teachers compared me with Vannilyn. I was discouraged and no longer followed their instructions. At the end of the first term, the principal’s assistant announced the final examination result, and I still ranked No. 1. Therefore, I became prouder and told myself that I would still be the best student even if I didn’t study hard.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I was overconfident and didn’t pay much attention to my study.

W: That’s weird. Have you ever heard that students aren’t allowed to answer questions unless they reach out their forefingers?
M: It’s unbelievable. It makes me confused.

W: American people are very interested in Chinese culture. They watch Chinese films, eat Chinese food and even admire Chinese fashions. I think it will be easy for me to keep my culture alive there, simply by answering questions from my classmates about China.
M: Since you are Chinese, you may face some difficult cultural differences. How do you plan to deal with that?
W: Every place is different. I know that I may become upset while I am in a new place. But it’s important to just remember that you are a guest in that place, and you should respect other cultures.
M: Do you expect that most of your friends are Americans, or will you try and make friends with other foreigners?
W: Well, I certainly won’t know about that until I arrive in America. I expect that it might be easier to make friends with other foreigners, because we will all be going through the same culture shock. I would like to have friends from everywhere.

M: Yeah, we often fall out over silly things like who’s going to introduce the show or who’s going to choose the questions. Did you know you waved your arms around a lot when arguing?
W: Oh, I didn’t notice that.
M: Using gestures to express what you’re thinking is commonplace in some countries, but a gesture can mean different things in different countries. For instance, shaking your head mostly means “no”, but in other countries it can mean the opposite. So the question is: In which country does shaking your head mean “yes”? Greece, Japan or Bulgaria?
W: Umm … No idea. Maybe Bulgaria? But I do know Indians shake their heads to mean lots of things. That goes completely over my head.
M: You’ve hit it this time. We need to be careful to avoid offense when greeting people from other cultures with gestures. Now we’ll invite Erin Meyer to talk about misunderstandings and confusions in multicultural conversations and analyze the reasons.

19.(1.5分)What helps leave a great first impression?
A.Using right body language.

A.College applicants. B.New employees. C.Job seekers.
【答案】18.C 19.A 20.C
【原文】
M: So let's go over the key points again. First clothes. You need to make sure you wear the right kind of uniform. Perhaps your suit is perfect for a graduation ceremony, but is it the right one for work? Select the clothes that match the look you want. If you need to buy some new clothes then get used to wearing them for at least two days so that you don’t feel too awkward or self conscious. It’s okay if they are not brand new, but it’s not if they limit your performance. Next remember, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Walk in confidently and look as if you really want the job. When you sit down, sit up straight, keep your hands open and relaxed on your lap, don’t cross your arms or legs. However, a good first impression is not enough. You need to be smart when answering questions. If asked about the reason for quitting your last job, never criticize your past employers or bosses. It’s the kiss of death. Try to answer from a perspective like your personal development. It’ll show that you have matured and are ready to learn.

【答案】24.A 25.C 26.D 27.D

【答案】
As we all know, body language is widely used in our daily life. Perhaps the best example is smiling.
A smile is a magical means of narrowing the distance between people and a catalyst for harmonious interpersonal relationships. We can use a smile to start a conversation, which may help us find friends in a world of strangers. Besides, a smile is a silent greeting. It conveys the message of kindness and respect and creates a warm and harmonious atmosphere for in-depth communication and exchanges.
From my perspective, body language plays an important role in our daily life. Meanwhile, positive body language can brighten others’ life. If we are feeling down or feeling lonely, there is nothing better than seeing the smiling face of a friend.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I was overconfident and didn’t pay much attention to my study. Believing that I would always be the best in studies, whether I studied hard or not, I continued to play computer games and did what I thought was fun and interesting. At the beginning of the second term, our school organised an English Spelling Competition, in which there were six participants, including Vannilyn and me. When looking at Vannilyn in the competition room, I suddenly felt not so confident of myself. Three minutes later, the competition started.
Paragraph 2:
Three days later, the result of the English Spelling competition was announced. I was shocked to know that I only took the third place, with Vannilyn being the first. I sat on my chair, tears rolling down my face. After calming down, I began to reflect on what I had been doing those days. How I regretted the days that had been wasted playing games but should have been spent on my studies. I know better the saying “Pride goes before a fall” through my own experience.
