When we talk about engineers, we think of people who make machines, like cars. But are there engineers in nature? Yes! Some animals or plants can change their home in a big way. We call them ecosystem engineers.
Beavers are a great example of ecosystem engineers! They use their strong teeth to bite trees until the trees fall down, then they build dams (坝) with branches and stones in the water. The dams create small lakes and wetlands. These new areas become home to fish, insects, birds and many other animals. The areas also help to keep the whole ecosystem healthy and balanced. Beavers don’t do the building work for others—they’re just building their own safe homes. But they create living spaces for other wildlife by accident. Isn’t that amazing?
Plants can be engineers too. In the San Francisco Estuary, the USA, a plant called Brazilian waterweed (水草) is an important one. The leaves and stems of this waterweed can slow down the water. They can also catch tiny things. This makes the water clearer. Clearer water lets more sunlight in, so some fish can see things easily. And sunlight helps water plants grow more. These plants offer the small fish places to hide.
Ecosystem engineers can have a great influence on their home. It shows how all living things in an ecosystem are connected!

Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometres north of Brisbane.
It is a very special island because it is completely made of sand. There is a long beach along the east coast of the island. Planes arrive and leave from here.
The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sand blows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two metres a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedral and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colours. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.
Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests—eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds, like owls and curlews. There are many animals, too, such as crocodiles, flying foxes and wild dogs called dingoes.
About 50,000 people visit the island every year to see the island’s beauty and nature. People enjoy camping and hiking there. Unluckily, the visitors create problems. They damage plants and frighten animals. Their sun cream (防晒霜) makes the water dirty. So it is necessary to manage the visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.
23.Fraser Island is very special because ________.
A.it is completely made of sand B.it has a long beach
C.it has a large airport D.it is unusual in shape
24.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.A sandy hill can be formed in a year. B.The sandy hills are all red.

25.The underlined word “frighten” means “________” in the last paragraph.
A.love B.save C.scare D.remember
26.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A trip to Fraser Island. B.Nature on Fraser Island.

D
After a 10-year project to count tuna (金枪鱼) and other large fish in the world’s oceans, scientists have made a very surprising discovery: these fish are almost gone. Because of too much fishing, almost 90 percent of the worldwide population of large fish—the ones we usually eat—has disappeared. If we don’t take action, these animals will totally disappear. That will influence every animal in the ocean.
The demand for fish is growing. Almost a billion people around the world get their protein (蛋白质) mostly from fish. Doctors praise seafood for being low in fat. But what seems like a healthy choice for humans is causing a disaster to the oceans. “People are consuming (消费) too much,” says Lance Morgan, a scientist at the Marine Conservation Biology Institute.
A dish of tuna in restaurants costs more than just one animal’s life. When fish like tuna disappear from the ecosystem, the ocean’s food chain breaks down. Animals such as sharks, which normally eat tuna, may die because they find no food.
The news may be scary, but taking action from now on can prevent harm that hasn’t happened yet. World organizations are ordering countries to stop fishing too much. The Monterey Bay Aquarium gives seafood choices to anyone, hoping to keep healthy without destroying (破坏) the environment.
“If you care about wildlife, spend time and think about your own values and beliefs first,” says Morgan. “Then decide what you’re going to eat.”
27.How does the writer start the text?
A.By giving a fact. B.By asking a question.
C.By telling a story. D.By showing some numbers.
28.What does the underlined word “demand” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Wish. B.Support. C.Need. D.Price.
29.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A.If sharks die out, tuna will die out soon.
B.Tuna will be more popular in restaurants.
C.Tuna play an important role in the ecosystem.
D.Tuna disappeared because they found no food.
30.What’s the purpose of the text?
A.To tell people to stop polluting the oceans.
B.To tell people to protect wildlife in oceans.
C.To tell people to avoid eating too much seafood.
D.To tell people to care about the ocean's food chain.

Everyone loves holidays abroad. They give us the chance to see some sights, have some fun and relax. However, holidays aren't always a great experience. Follow these tips to make sure you enjoy your holiday.
Have you packed your passport? Your tickets? Every year, thousands of people miss flights because they've forgotten their passport, they arrive at the airport too late, or even go to the wrong airport! How much do you know about the place you are going to visit? Learning a little about the culture of a country will help you understand the people. Learning a few words of another language can also help you make new friends.
Try to reduce the pollution you cause. Travel by train if you can. Flying produces twenty times more carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) than travelling by train. Of course, it might be impossible to avoid flying, but when you arrive, use buses or trains instead of taxis.
You can help a local community a lot by staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants. This means that your money will go to local people, rather than to a large international company.

We tried our best to climb out, but then I saw that Tom, one of my children was lost. I went back inside and found him. He was safe but he felt very nervous and afraid.”
Mrs Wu said that her husband had just left for work when she felt that her house was moving. She ran outside at once with her children.
“There was no time left to take anything,” she said. “In just a few minutes, the roof came down.”

根据文章第二段“It is a very special island because it is completely made of sand.”
24.根据文章第三段“There are hills made of sand called sand blows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two metres a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger.”
They damage plants…makes the water dirty. ”可知,游客带来了很多问题:他们破坏植被,使水变脏,他们的行为带来了负面影响;由此可推断,他们使动物受到惊吓。这里frighten的意思是“惊吓”,与“scare”意思相近。

【答案】27.A 28.C 29.C 30.B
根据第一段“After a 10-year project to count tuna (金枪鱼) and other large fish in the world’s oceans, scientists have made a very surprising discovery: these fish are almost gone.”
28.第二段“Almost a billion people around the world get their protein (蛋白质) mostly from fish.”
29.根据第三段“When fish like tuna disappear from the ecosystem, the ocean’s food chain breaks down. Animals such as sharks, which normally eat tuna, may die because they find no food.”

根据“Human activities have caused great damage”可知此处表示海洋处境危险,使用搭配be in danger,意为“处于危险中”。

such“如此”后接名词,too“太”、very“非常”搭配错误。
根据“Many marine animals…depend on coral reefs for shelter”可知此处缺少定语从句的引导词,先行词是“animals”,表示事物,且从句缺主语,用which引导。

系动词be后接形容词作表语,结合“Too much sugar”以及少吃糖果的语境可知,此处指对儿童的牙齿是有害的,用harm的形容词harmful,且be harmful to...

We must remember that nature is our friend, not our enemy. If we take good care 72 it, it will provide us with resources for years to come. Let’s work together 73 (keep) the balance of nature. Everyone can play 74 part in protecting the environment. It’s never too late 75 start.
66.between 67.of 68.and 69.using 70.have started 71.will make 72.of 73.to keep 74.a 75.to
between…and… 和……之间”。

空后“some cities have stopped using plastic straws. Others have set up recycling centers.”
空前“These small changes”为主语,空后“a big difference”为宾语。
take good care of意为“好好关心、好好爱护”。
work together to do sth.“协力做某事”,这里用to keep来表示“维持生态平衡”这一目的,作目的状语。
play a part in…
It’s never too late to do sth.

Dear teachers and classmates,
The Yangtze River, our mother river, is facing serious challenges. Plastic pollution is everywhere on the river surface, and overfishing has broken the balance of its ecosystem. It’s time for us to take action to protect it.
First, let’s start with personal actions. We should reduce the use of plastic products, such as bringing reusable bags when shopping and refusing disposable tableware. Every small step can cut down plastic waste entering the river.
Second, we can organize campus activities. Planting trees along both sides of the Yangtze River can prevent soil erosion and provide a better living environment for aquatic organisms. We can also hold river-cleaning activities on weekends to collect rubbish by the river.
Third, we can use technology to help. With AI intelligent monitoring systems, we can track the situation of plastic pollution and illegal fishing in real time. This can help relevant departments take timely measures to stop harmful behaviors.
Remember: every little thing we do brings us closer to a green future. Come and join us today!

Coral reefs are one of the most amazing wonders of the ocean. They are like underwater gardens, full of colours and life. The corals themselves are tiny organisms that build up over time to form vast structures. These structures provide a home for countless species of fish, sea turtles, and other marine creatures.
The colours of the coral reefs are breathtaking. There are vivid reds, brilliant blues, sunny yellows, and every shade in between. The fish that swim among the corals add to the beauty, with their own unique colours and patterns. Some are striped, some are spotted, and others are a single solid colour. It’s like a living masterpiece, constantly changing and developing.
However, coral reefs are in danger. Rising sea temperatures, pollution, and overfishing are all threatening their existence. Many coral reefs around the world have already been damaged or destroyed. We need to take action to protect these precious ecosystems. By reducing our carbon footprint, supporting conservation efforts, and being more mindful of our waste, we can help ensure that the beauty of the coral reefs remains for future generations to enjoy.

19.What do we know about ecosystem engineers?
A.They are dams and lakes. B.They grow trees in the water.
C.They change their home in a big way. D.They can make cars in factories.
20.What is the right order according to paragraph 2?
