Ⅴ.阅读理解
A
On a recent weekday,I sent an Instagram message to a friend of mine,an art adviser in New York named Stephen Truax,to chat about an exhibition.Instead of messaging me back in the app,he texted me to say that he’d blocked Instagram on his smartphone during daytime working hours.
Impressed,I asked him how he was accomplishing such a challenge.Truax said he was using Opal,an app that makes your smartphone a little more like a so-called dumbphone(功能机).He said that several of his friends swore by the app,and so he had begun using it,too.I took this word of mouth as evidence that it might actually work.I downloaded it without any particular optimism, considering my phone addiction an incurable case.
Opal,I found, provides something like gentle parenting for your smartphone habits:you set up a daily schedule of which apps to block, and then the app guides you into sticking with it.As the app suggested,I set up a recurring “Work Time” block from 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.and selected every social app I ever use.At the scheduled time, those apps go gray on my home screen and remain that way all day.
Every time I’m upset that I can’t look at Instagram on my phone,I just think, surely I,a human adult, can wait a few more hours to see my friends’ dog photos—5 p.m.isn’t that far away.Crucially,Opal also allows users to suspend the block for short periods of time without feeling like failures;when the scheduled break time passes, the blockage automatically continues.
I find comfort in the fact that my mind feels clearer after a full workday without checking social media, and an added bonus is that once the block ends I can mainline all the good posts that I missed. As Truax told me,“The flood of content that happens after dinner is wild.” The addiction is not cured, perhaps, but at least it’s finally managed.

How would you survive without your smartphone? For many of us,it’s the device we’re most attracted to—looking at it hundreds of times a day.We depend on it to perform different tasks and to connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phones?
Certainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone,American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be.In a BBC interview,he suggested people should stop scrolling(刷屏) and “get a life”.But of course, once we start scrolling or watching videos,we just can’t kick the habit.Psychologist and author Jean Twenge says,“we’re all guilty of habitually checking our phones if waiting for a text or getting really into social media then kind of,looking up and realizing that an hour has passed.” There’s even a word—phubber—to describe a person who ignores the real people around them because they are concentrating on their phones.
But does it matter if we make the most of this technology?Possibly, because like a drug, the problem arises when it is taken away.A study from King’s College London found young people they studied couldn’t control the amount of time they spent on their phone.Such addictive behavior means that people become anxious or upset if they are refused constant access, which can cause anxiety and mental health issues.
Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics and Political Science suggests we don’t just look at our phones because we are encouraged by a text or e-mail.The people they studied felt natural to interact with their phones, just as a smoker would light a cigarette.Prof.Saadi Lahlou,co-author of the study, told the BBC,“We must learn tricks to avoid the temptation(诱惑) when we want to concentrate or have good social relations.”
One solution could be an app that rewards students for time spent away from their phones.Another choice is changing your smartphone to an ordinary phone that has none of the distractions(分心事) on it.But mainly perhaps,we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world.
5.What did Martin Cooper suggest people do?
A.Learn tricks to avoid the temptation.
B.Enjoy life by stopping the habit of scrolling.
C.Change their smartphones to ordinary phones.
D.Use an app that rewards them for less phone use.
6.Why do people feel ashamed after checking their phones?
A.For not being productive enough.
B.For missing important texts or calls.
C.For using their phones for a long time.
D.For not being able to connect with others.
7.What does the study from King’s College London imply?
A.The young shouldn’t use their phones.
B.Using phones leads the young to be anxious.
C.Curing phone addiction is not an easy job.
D.Young people can’t survive without phones.
8.What is the main message of the text?
A.Smartphones are essential for modern life.
B.Smartphones have a certain impact on mental health.
C.The inventor of the mobile phone should be punished.
D.People should avoid their addiction to smartphones.
Ⅵ.七选五
(2026安徽宣城高二上期末)
Ever feel like there’s never enough time these days?Chased by deadlines and bombarded with(狂轰滥炸) social media content,we feel that each day is full. 1
The idea of “time poverty” is not new.First introduced in 1977,it has attracted much attention over the decades, according to Forbes.Cassie Holmes,a US social psychologist, tracked the time data of tens of thousands of people and found that when people have less than two hours of free time each day, their life satisfaction drops. 2
We live in a world that values productivity.People are expected to be efficient, take on different roles and deal with many tasks. This can lead to a lack of personal time, hurting the individual’s well-being. 3 A University of Chicago study found that over the past decade, people’s participation in community activities had dropped by 58 percent, and the chance of neighbors knowing each other had fallen from 75 percent in the 1980s to only 22 percent in 2022.
4 Holmes pointed out that when people have over five hours of free time a day, they may start to feel a loss of purpose and achievement. Those who have two to five hours of free time each day report the highest levels of happiness and satisfaction.
Time is a resource that is equally shared among all people. The key lies not in how much time we have, but in how we use it. 5 Exercising or volunteering can help you make the most of your time and give you a sense of achievement.
A.Make a strict schedule for everyday activities.
B.It can also cause a crisis in social relationships.
C.You should reduce workload and social arrangements.
D.They may even start to experience feelings such as anxiety and burnout.
E.However, when we stop to think about our day,we might feel a bit empty.
F.Despite these facts, more free time does not necessarily mean greater happiness.
G.If you ever feel short on time, try making small changes to find some “me time”.
