Outstanding Female Physicists in Modern History
Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997, Chinese-American)
She was a top nuclear physicist. At 44, she did the “Wu Experiment” (1956), proving parity violation (宇称不守恒) — particles don’t act the same in mirror images. This helped two male scientists win the Nobel Prize. She taught at Columbia University, guided many students, and earned the Wolf Prize in Physics (1978).
Marie Curie (1867-1934, Polish-French)
She was the only person to win the Nobel Prizes in two sciences (Physics 1903, Chemistry 1911). Born in Poland, she worked in France. With her husband, she discovered polonium (1898, named after Poland) and radium at 31. She studied radioactivity, used it in early cancer treatment, and helped make X-ray machines for World War I hospitals.
Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958, British)
A 31-year-old biophysicist, she took “Photo 51” (1952) — the first clear X-ray picture of DNA. This image was key for Watson and Crick to figure out DNA’s double-helix structure. She also studied coal and viruses, but died young at 37 from illness linked to her work.
Lise Meitner (1878-1968, Austrian-Swedish)
She was a Jewish physicist who fled Austria to Sweden in 1938 (age 60). With Otto Hahn, she discovered nuclear fission (核裂变) — splitting atoms to release huge energy. She named “fission” and explained how it works, though Hahn alone got the 1944 Nobel. She later taught in Sweden and became a global physics icon (偶像).
21. What is special about polonium?
A. It was discovered together with radium.
B. It was named after Marie Curie’s homeland.
C. It was used to treat cancer in hospitals.
D. It helped make X‑ray machines.
22. What part did Rosalind Franklin’s “Photo 51” play?
A. It helped uncover DNA’s double-helix shape.
B. It was the first X-ray picture of DNA.
C. It supported the study of coal and viruses.
D. It showed that she worked as a biophysicist.
23. What do all four female scientists have in common according to the passage?
A. They all made breakthroughs in nuclear physics.
B. They all faced gender discrimination in their careers.
C. They all contributed greatly to science.
D. They were all born in Europe.
B
Who will take care of grandma and grandpa when no one is available? This question is becoming urgent as the population is aging rapidly and fewer children are being born. For many families, the answer might soon be a robot.
This might sound like science fiction, but the reasons are practical, mainly financial. Hiring someone to help with aging loved ones is prohibitively expensive — upwards of $75,000 a year for a home health aide and well over $100,000 for a nursing home. In comparison, one estimate places the cost of a humanoid robot at just $20,000.
Given this affordability, I believe that robots will assume the care of many elderly people. A robot could potentially be a one-time expense, requiring minimal maintenance and receiving updates through cloud computing technology. And it could function around the clock. I’ve treated elderly patients who had been found wandering the streets or severely dehydrated (脱水的) because of gaps in care. A tireless robot — made possible by improved battery life and the ability to self-charge — could mitigate such problems. Reliable robotic companions could also accompany seniors outside the home for walks or to community events, enhancing rather than weakening their social connections.
Furthermore, while actual human contact is preferable, it has real drawbacks. Human caregivers can lose their tempers, but robots are unlikely to have that problem. In a recent study, observers found AI-generated responses to be more empathetic and compassionate (有同情心的) than those of humans — a surprising but telling result. A robot with AI-assisted voice technology could potentially understand emotion and intent, clarify instructions, and respond to commands in real time.
But where does that leave us? If I know that grandma has her robot, will I opt not to drop by after work when I’m exhausted? Will the neighbors stop checking on her? As her faculties (机能) fail, will she feel more at ease with the robot than with her family?
24. What is a robot’s main practical advantage in elder care?
A. Its lower long-term cost. B. Its guarantee of total safety.
C. Its ability to show friendship. D. Its simple setup and operation.
25. What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Ease. B. Cause. C. Ignore. D. Discover.
26. What does the author imply by citing the AI study in paragraph 4?
A. The urgent need to replace human care. B. The potential of AI in showing empathy.
C. The general weakness of human caregivers. D. The importance of human emotional interaction.
27. How does the author sound in the last paragraph?
A. Angry and intolerant. B. Reflective and concerned.
C. Indifferent and dismissive. D. Sympathetic and confused.
C
Most of us have an “inner voice,” and we assume everybody does. Recent evidence suggests people vary widely in the extent to which they experience inner speech. The study by cognitive (认知的) scientists Gary Lupyan and Johanne Nedergaard shows these differences are real and impact our cognition.
As part of their ongoing research, Lupyan previously assessed 1,037 people using a measure called the Internal Representations Questionnaire (IRQ). For the verbal (口头的) part of the IRQ, participants indicated agreement with statements like: “I think about problems in my mind in the form of a conversation with myself” on a one-to-five rating.
For their new study, Lupyan and Nedergaard selected 47 participants who scored high for having an inner voice and 46 who scored low. They then gave participants four language-related tasks they thought might be influenced by the use of inner speech.
In the first, participants were shown five words and asked to repeat them back. The second involved saying whether the names of objects in two pictures rhymed. In both tasks, the group with less inner speech was less accurate. For the rhyme judgments, people with more inner speech were also faster.
“This study really tests what inner speech gives us in terms of cognitive benefits,” says psychologist Charles Fernyhough. The other two experiments tested task switching and participants’ ability to spot differences between two silhouettes (轮廓图形) that were from either the same or a different category. The groups showed no differences on these tasks. “People can probably employ numerous other strategies for task switching,” suggests Lupyan.
The research may have medical implications. “Someone with more inner speech might be more reliant on language in their thinking,” Lupyan says, “so language difficulty from a stroke (中风) could have a more severe effect.”
Understanding how inner speech develops has implications for education, says neuroscientist Ladislas Nalborczyk. “Variations in children’s ability to represent speech sounds may impact their ability to learn the relation between sounds and writing,” he says. This may affect the way they learn to read and write, which probably has a huge impact on education.
The researchers propose giving a lack of inner speech a name: “anendophasia.” “It helps scientists find and integrate research on a topic,” Lupyan says. “If people studying something are calling it by different names, the research becomes more disorganized.”
28. What was the purpose of using IRQ?
A. To change people’s experience of inner speech.
B. To find out how many people have an inner voice.
C. To measure people’s agreement with certain statements.
D. To make people think about problems in a conversation form.
29. How does inner speech help with tasks?
A. It offers more inspiration. B. It aids in better performance.
C. It makes people more patient. D. It changes the way of thinking.
30. What does Lupyan suggest about task switching?
A. Inner speech is the primary strategy for it.
B. It is mainly affected by external environment.
C. It can be achieved through various methods.
D. Inner speech has little influence on its complexity.
31. Why do the researchers try to name the lack of inner speech?
A. To make it easier to remember. B. To create a new concept for study.
C. To tell it apart from other speech forms. D. To assist scientists in arranging research on it.
D
Wall Street bankers, investors and economists have for months argued over whether a US recession (衰退) is coming. But for some Americans, the unforgiving economic pain typical during recession has already set in.
Al Brown and his wife faced a tough call in May when reviewing their weekly budget: what’s a higher priority, more food or dish soap? Based in Concord, North Carolina, Brown was the main breadwinner for his wife and their two children. Then in April, he was let go from his job as a global director of business development at software company Cascade. He’s since quit his gym membership and sold various items around his home, including a computer and yard furniture. His 13-year-old son quit the basketball team.
Brown, 37, now spends his days searching the internet for jobs or reaching out to potential connections. After filing over 600 applications, only a handful have produced interviews. That’s a far cry from the labor-market strength described in government figures.
Investors and economists have been expecting a recession since last year as the Fed raised interest rates to control inflation (通货膨胀). That caused companies to focus on profitability over growth, which meant cutting spending and reducing their workforces.
“I think it’s unlikely that I will get another good paying job with great benefits like the one I had,” McCollum, who lives in Cleveland, Ohio, said. More Americans are likely to encounter similar cases, some experts predict.
“As we go through this year, and into next year, there is still going to be this focus on trying to reduce costs, and it is going to result in more unemployment,” said Thomas Simons, a senior economist at Jefferies. “The impact of layoffs, currently concentrated among white-collar workers, will last throughout the economy through a ‘big pullback in overall spending’,” Simons said. “Consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic output, so if more Americans are forced to cut back because they were laid off, that might throw the US economy into a recession.”
32. What are some Americans currently going through?
A. They can’t afford necessities of life. B. They’ve lost interest in high-end gyms.
C. They are badly treated by their bosses. D. They have difficulty making ends meet.
33. What does the author want to demonstrate through Brown’s job hunting?
A. One should try various ways to find a job.
B. American labor market is not that friendly to job-seekers.
C. Few companies are interested in middle-aged job-hunters.
D. The government provides accurate figures of the job market.
34. How do companies deal with the economic struggles?
A. By employing more workers. B. By changing interest rates.
C. By giving priority to profits. D. By cutting employees’ allowances.
35. Which statement will Thomas Simons probably agree with?
A. Laid-off workers tend to go into debt.
B. Lower consumption may worsen the current situation.
C. Americans will spend more to increase economic output.
D. Companies are to blame for the unemployment of white-collar workers.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Getting into the right mindset for serious studying can be difficult. With roommates or family, incoming messages, the Internet and a million other distractions, it’s easy to lose focus. Use these tips to make a quiet place perfect for concentration.
Create your quiet space
Reading and memorizing require focus, so it’s important to create a quiet space. You can use earplugs or download a white noise app on your phone. ____36____. Turn your phone on airplane mode so that texts and calls can’t distract you. For Internet distractions, consider downloading an app that can help with productivity. These apps will block access to the Internet for a certain period of time to keep you on-track and away from social media. ____37____.
____38____
Another easy way to get distracted from your study plan is realizing you need something that you forgot outside your study space. If you’re doing work or reading on a laptop, make sure to bring your charger because a failing battery can be distracting and may force you to stop studying before you’ve finished. Be sure to have all of the pens, highlighters, notebooks and textbooks you will need to complete your work. ____39____. Having everything you need within reach will keep you focused as you work through your assignments.
Find the right atmosphere
____40____. Thus, making sure the environment is best for you is important. Students with worksheets, equations and practice problems would probably do better with a desk or a large table, so they can spread out and access all of their materials at the same time. Students with lots of reading may be more comfortable on a sofa or chair where they can settle in and get comfortable while they study.
A. Bring the essentials
B. Pack your forgotten things
C. Different students adopt different attitudes
D. Not everyone has the same study style or tasks
E. Getting up and interrupting your thought can make it hard to focus
F. Silencing your phone and avoiding online distractions are also crucial
G. Creating the right mental atmosphere sets you up for a successful study session
第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
I used to be a smartphone holdout (抵制). “Who needs this pocket-sized distraction?” I’d laugh, watching others ____41____ to screens. Then life threw a curve ball: my grandma got sick, and suddenly, not having a phone to get updates felt like being stuck in a time warp. So, I ____42____ and joined the smartphone crowd, and oh boy, it’s been a roller coaster.
These devices are magic and confusion. At family dinners, uncles who once told wild fishing tales now just nod and ____43____ messages. I’ve seen friends at concerts ____44____ the whole show like they’re making a documentary for aliens, ____45____ the real-life cheers of the crowd. Once, I even caught myself taking a photo of a sunset ____46____ just enjoying the sunset.
The downsides pile up. “Text neck” is a real ____47____ — my neck sometimes feels like it’s practicing for a robot role. And don’t get me started on sleep! Staring at that blue light before bed is like telling your brain, “Hey, let’s party all-night!” Kids these days? They’d rather emoji-chat than have a proper ____48____, turning real-life gatherings into a game of digital exchanges.
But hey, smartphones aren’t all ____49____. When I got lost in a foreign city, the navigation map was my knight in shining armor (盔甲). Need to learn a random skill? There’s an app for that. Asher loved spending time in his grandfather's garden. Every evening, he carefully held the watering can as his grandfather showed him how to pour just the right amount on each plant. “These plants need us, Asher,” Grandpa often said. “If we take care of them, they will take care of us.”
Asher loved plants. He loved their bright green leaves, the way they danced in the wind, and how fresh they smelled after rain. Plants made him feel calm and safe. But when it came to people, Asher was not so confident. At school, he was one of the quietest kids. While others laughed and played loudly, he often sat alone, unsure how to join them.
One afternoon during break, Asher walked past the big oak tree (橡树) near the playground. A group of kids stood nearby, pulling leaves from its lower branches and throwing them into the air. “Look! Leaf rain!” one of them shouted, laughing.
Asher’s chest tightened. He loved trees. He knew that leaves helped trees breathe and grow. He wanted to say something, but fear held him back. What if they laughed at him? What if they ignored him? After a moment, he turned away and walked back to the classroom without saying a word.
That evening, Asher sat in the garden with his grandfather, watering the plants as usual, but his mind was not at peace. His silence did not escape Grandpa. After a while, Asher shared what had happened at school and how he felt. He explained that he wanted to protect the tree but did not feel brave enough.
His grandfather listened carefully. He told Asher that courage does not mean being fearless. It means doing what is right, even when fear is present. He reminded Asher that change often begins with one small voice and one brave choice. Those words stayed in Asher’s mind all night.

W: So, where do the wolves fit in?
M: On one particular morning, my father had gone to collect firewood and a pack of wolves entered the camp. Instead of being scared, I offered them some fish. The wolves were hungry and ate it happily. And that was that … or so I thought. The next day they came back, and the day after that. In the following weeks, every time we went camping, the wolves would find us. I would feed them and eventually we became good friends!

【原文】Greetings to you all. It’s lovely to have so many visitors from China. Today, I’m thrilled to share insights into a very special aspect of Western European culture and history: the tradition of building castles. These structures, spread across the landscapes of our countries, offer a view into our rich history and the way of life hundreds of years ago. These castles, dating mainly from the 9th to the 15th centuries, were not only military buildings but also centers of political and social life. Built in carefully chosen positions, they served as symbols of power and wealth. Now, let’s look at the key features of these magnificent structures. Castles were often situated on top of hills, providing a strategic advantage in defense. The outer walls, bridges, and water around them were designed to scare off enemies. Within the walls, you’d find a central tower, which is the ruler’s residence, and other various buildings like soldiers’ accommodation. Life within a castle was a complex mixture of politics, warfare, and everyday activities. As you explore these architectural wonders, you’ll witness the complex work and clever design that went into their construction. It displays the hard work and intelligence of the period and the rich history of Western European culture.

A
Outstanding Female Physicists in Modern History
【答案】21. B 22. A 23. C

【答案】24. A 25. A 26. B 27. B

【导语】文章讲述人口老龄化催生养老机器人需求,介绍其成本、服务优势,也反思了其可能带来的社会问题。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“This might sound like science fiction, but the reasons are practical, mainly financial. Hiring someone to help with aging loved ones is prohibitively expensive — upwards of $75,000 a year for a home health aide and well over $100,000 for a nursing home. In comparison, one estimate places the cost of a humanoid robot at just $20,000.(这听起来或许像科幻故事,但背后的原因很实际,主要是经济原因。雇佣人员照顾年迈亲人的费用高得令人望而却步——一名居家护工年薪高达7.5万美元,养老院费用更是远超10万美元。相比之下,据一项估算,人形机器人的成本仅为2万美元)”以及第三段“A robot could potentially be a one-time expense, requiring minimal maintenance and receiving updates through cloud computing technology.(机器人可能只需一次性投入,维护成本极低,还可通过云计算技术更新系统)”可知,养老机器人最实际的优势是长期使用成本更低。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“I’ve treated elderly patients who had been found wandering the streets or severely dehydrated because of gaps in care. A tireless robot — made possible by improved battery life and the ability to self-charge — could mitigate such problems.(我曾接诊过一些老年患者,他们因护理疏漏流落街头或严重脱水。续航提升、可自主充电的不知疲倦的机器人能够mitigate这类问题)”可知,机器人可以减少、改善护理疏漏引发的问题,由此猜测mitigate意为“减轻、缓解”,与ease同义。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“In a recent study, observers found AI-generated responses to be more empathetic and compassionate than those of humans — a surprising but telling result.(在近期一项研究中,观察者发现人工智能给出的回应比人类更体贴、更富有同情心,这一结果出人意料却很有说服力)”可知,作者引用该研究,意在说明人工智能在共情表达方面具备潜在优势。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“But where does that leave us? If I know that grandma has her robot, will I opt not to drop by after work when I’m exhausted? Will the neighbors stop checking on her? As her faculties fail, will she feel more at ease with the robot than with her family?(但这会让我们身处何种境地?如果我知道奶奶有机器人照料,疲惫下班后我是否会选择不再登门探望?邻居们是否会不再照看她?当她身体机能衰退时,她是否会比起家人,更愿意信赖机器人?)”可知,作者连用多个问句,反思机器人养老带来的人际疏离问题,态度审慎且充满担忧。
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. C 31.

【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. B

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Wall Street bankers, investors and economists have for months argued over whether a US recession (衰退) is coming. But for some Americans, the unforgiving economic pain typical during recession has already set in.(数月来,华尔街银行家、投资者和经济学家一直在争论美国是否即将陷入衰退。但对一些美国人来说,经济衰退期间典型的无情的经济痛苦已经开始了)”以及后文布朗家生活日渐拮据的例子表明,一些美国人目前正在经历入不敷出。故选D。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Brown, 37, now spends his days searching the internet for jobs or reaching out to potential connections. After filing over 600 applications, only a handful have produced interviews. 【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“That caused companies to focus on profitability over growth, which meant cutting spending and reducing their workforces.(这导致企业更关注盈利能力,而不是增长,这意味着削减支出和裁员)”可知,企业优先考虑利润来应对经济困境。故选C。

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
【答案】36. F 37. G 38. A 39. E 40. D

【导语】文章主要通过外国游客和旅居者的经历,展现了中国公共安全体系下的信任与温暖。
【56题详解】
考查动词语态。句意:他们的婴儿手推车无法被带上缆车。空处为句子的谓语动词,主语Their baby’s stroller与谓语动词take之间是被动关系,且空前有could not,所以此处需用被动语态:be done,take的过去分词为taken。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The next day during break, Asher saw the same kids pulling leaves just like before.

【答案】
The next day during break, Asher saw the same kids pulling leaves just like before. This time, he didn’t walk away. His heart pounded, but Grandpa’s words echoed in his mind: courage means doing what is right even when you are afraid. Taking a shaky breath, Asher stepped forward. “Hey,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Please stop.” The kids turned, surprised. “Leaves help trees breathe,” Asher continued, trying to sound calm. “If you pull them all off, the tree could get sick and die.” For a long moment, nobody spoke. Then one boy dropped the leaf in his hand. “Really?” he asked. “I never thought about that.” Asher nodded, feeling a small wave of confidence. “Instead of hurting it,” he suggested, “we could protect it together.”
The kids soon agreed to Asher’s suggestion. They fetched cardboard and bright markers from the classroom and made a large sign that read, “Protect Our Tree — It Gives Us Shade and Clean Air.” Together, they tied it to the oak tree. Over the next few weeks, the group took turns watering the tree and picking up litter around it. Asher no longer sat alone during break. He stood and laughed with his new friends under the spreading branches. One afternoon, Grandpa came to pick him up and saw the sign. His eyes shone with pride. “You see, Asher?” he said quietly. “You took care of the tree, and the tree brought you friends.” Asher smiled, feeling the warm sun and an even warmer sense of belonging. He finally understood: when we take care of plants, they take care of us in ways we never expect.
