I never knew what to make of the lady across the street. She was very odd. First, she hardly ever came out of her house. I had only seen her a few times. Second, she wore the strangest clothing — it looked as if she had put on layer after layer of clothes. Third, she never invited anyone over. She lived alone and never seemed to have visitors.
One warm afternoon, I was playing baseball with my friend Tony in my backyard. He threw the ball so hard that it flew over my house and went through the lady’s window. Hearing the crash of glass, I thought I’d better go over and apologize for breaking her window.
When we arrived at her front door, I rang the bell. To my surprise, the door opened right away. The lady stood there looking at us with a puzzled expression. “I’m Jessica, the girl who lives across the street,” I said. “I’m very sorry — I broke your window.” The lady smiled and said, “Don’t worry about it. I’ve been expecting you.” Then she invited us in for lemonade and gave us a big bag of cookies.
When we were leaving, the lady walked us to the gate. She handed me a small card with her address on it and said, “If you ever need help, just give me a call.” I was a little confused. I had no idea why she would offer to help me.
Then one day Tony rushed in and told me he’d given the lady my address. “She’s been living here for ten years,” he said. “She gives every visitor a small gift.” Hearing this, I took a deep breath. I couldn’t believe that Tony had given my address to that old lady. Jessica’s face turned red as she realized she had been misjudging the lady all along. She promised herself she would be a better person from then on.
Paragraph 1: I went to the lady’s house with Tony the next day.

When I first moved to Hilltown High, I tried my best to keep a low profile. I wore the same old jacket every day, kept my hair short, and never spoke unless the teacher called on me.
But somehow, I always seemed to attract the wrong kind of attention. During lunch break, a group of older kids would whisper and giggle whenever I passed by their table. I could feel their eyes following me down the hallway.
Once, I overheard two of them say, "Look at him — he must be a weirdo. I bet he doesn't even have any friends." My heart sank, and I walked faster, pretending I hadn't heard a thing.
Since that day, I ate lunch alone in the library, walked home alone, and spent every evening alone in my room. I told myself that nobody in this town would ever understand me, and I would be better off staying invisible.

Dad had bought me a beautiful guitar for my sixteenth birthday. It was a glossy brown one with a small star inlaid at the neck. I named her Stella and promised to take care of her forever.
But last weekend, while showing off to my friends, I accidentally knocked her off the music stand. She hit the floor with a sickening crack. The neck snapped clean in half, and Stella was beyond repair.
I expected Dad to explode. He had always been a man of few words, but his temper was something I feared. When I came home that evening, however, he was sitting at the kitchen table in silence, his face unreadable. The broken pieces of Stella lay wrapped in an old towel on the counter.
At dinner, Dad said nothing. He just tapped his chopsticks against the bowl once, and I took it as a sign of disappointment. I didn't dare speak. I quietly finished my food and slipped into my room, hiding the broken pieces under my bed.
Days passed. Dad still didn't mention the guitar. He still called me to set the table, still asked about my homework, and still kissed Mom goodnight as he always did. But the silence about Stella grew heavier and heavier, and I became more and more afraid that he had given up on me.

When the new girl Linda walked into our classroom on the first day of term, our group of five friends looked at one another with the same uneasy thought: another quiet outsider trying to sit with us.
The head teacher, however, had other plans. Before we could protest, she pointed at the empty seat beside me and said, "Linda, you’ll sit here for now." Linda smiled shyly and nodded. From that moment on, the rest of the group began to give her the cold shoulder.
Things got worse when Jenny lost her silver bracelet. It had been lying on her desk only that morning, and by lunch it was gone. Jenny’s eyes turned straight to Linda’s bag. "Maybe someone took it," she whispered, loud enough for Linda to hear.
Linda’s face went pale. She opened her bag in front of everyone — the bracelet was not inside. But Jenny’s suspicion didn’t fade. Over the next few days, Jenny made little remarks under her breath, and I joined in, laughing along whenever Linda walked past.
Linda stopped trying to join our conversations. She came to class on time, did her work, ate lunch alone, and left as soon as the bell rang. We pretended not to notice. I told myself I was just going along with the group.
Paragraph 1: One Friday, the bracelet turned up under Jenny’s own textbook.

Paragraph 2: When I got home, I told my mother the whole story.

Paragraph 1: I went to the lady’s house with Tony the next day. I took a deep breath and rang her doorbell; to my surprise, she still remembered my name. "Come in, children," she said warmly, and led us into the little sitting room, where a stack of neatly wrapped gifts sat on the coffee table. "These are for every neighbor who drops by," she explained, her eyes full of warmth. She told us she had lived here for ten years and that her small gifts were her way of saying "welcome" to everyone who knocked. I listened, my cheeks burning. I couldn't help taking her hand — prejudice had made me miss so much kindness.
Paragraph 2: When I got home, I told my mother the whole story. She was silent for a long time after hearing it, then gently pulled me into her arms. She didn't scold me; she only said, "Never judge a book by its cover." At that moment I realized that beneath a "strange" exterior often lies the warmest of hearts. Looking back, I felt ashamed of how quickly I had built a wall around someone I barely knew. From then on, I vowed to ask a question before a misunderstanding took root, and to let kindness — not first impressions — decide who people really are.

Paragraph 1: One afternoon, a girl named Mia walked up to me in the library.
Paragraph 2: Walking home that day, I realized how wrong I had been about the town.

She explained that those kids had been wondering why I was always alone, and had never meant to hurt me.
My face burned at once — all the "rejection" I had felt was something I had imagined.
She invited me to sit with her at lunch the next day; I could barely speak, so I just nodded hard.

From then on, I vowed to reach out a hand before guessing what others are thinking.
Paragraph 1: One afternoon, a girl named Mia walked up to me in the library. She sat down across from me and held out an apple with a smile: "I’ve been watching you for a while." I froze, unsure what to say. She explained that those kids had been wondering why I was always alone, and had never meant to hurt me. My face burned at once — all the "rejection" I had felt was something I had imagined. She invited me to sit with her at lunch the next day; I could barely speak, so I just nodded hard. As she walked away, I realized how unfair I had been to an entire town that was simply curious about me.

Paragraph 1: On Saturday morning, I finally pulled the broken pieces out from under my bed.
Paragraph 2: That afternoon, Dad and I sat on the porch with the new guitar.
I spread the pieces on the floor; every crack seemed to silently accuse me.
I took a deep breath and carried the pieces to Dad’s workbench.
He paused his work, looked up at me, and then at the pile of broken pieces.
"Silly boy," he said with a smile, "I was waiting for you to speak up."
第二段
He didn’t scold me — he just took me to the music store in town.
He tuned the strings of the new guitar and handed it to me: "I’ve even thought of a name for it — Stella II."
My eyes grew hot as I struck the first chord — silence had never been anger, but waiting.
From then on, I learned that the courage to speak first often comforts more than a perfect explanation.
Paragraph 1: On Saturday morning, I finally pulled the broken pieces out from under my bed. I spread them on the floor; every crack seemed to silently accuse me. For a long while I just stared at them, my heart beating fast. Then I took a deep breath and carried the pieces to Dad’s workbench. He paused his work, looked up at me, and then at the pile of broken pieces. "Silly boy," he said with a smile, "I was waiting for you to speak up." He didn’t shout, didn’t scold — he just pulled me into a one-armed hug. The relief that flooded through me was almost too much to bear.
Paragraph 2: That afternoon, Dad and I sat on the porch with the new guitar. He didn’t scold me — he just took me to the music store in town. He tuned the strings of the new guitar and handed it to me: "I’ve even thought of a name for it — Stella II." My eyes grew hot as I struck the first chord — silence had never been anger, but waiting. From then on, I learned that the courage to speak first often comforts more than a perfect explanation, and that real love is sometimes patient enough to wait for you to find your voice.
On Saturday morning, I finally pulled the broken pieces out from under my bed. That afternoon, Dad and I sat on the porch with the new guitar.
【词汇激活】动作类:knock sth off(撞落), spread on the floor(摊在地上), pull into a hug(拉入怀中), strike a chord(拨响和弦);情绪类:unreadable(难以读懂的), accuse(质问), relief(如释重负), patient(耐心的)。
【点睛】"real love is sometimes patient enough to wait for you to find your voice."
Paragraph 2: I stayed behind after class and walked up to Linda.
1. Jenny
When Jenny pulled it out, her face flushed red at once.
We all froze, no one daring to speak first.
I glanced at Linda; her expression was so calm it hurt to see.
After class we silently drifted apart, and none of us could enjoy our lunch that day.
第二段
I caught up with her and offered her a bottle of water: "About that day, I’d like to hear it from you."
She stopped and turned back; her eyes held no resentment, only a hint of surprise.
She said calmly that she had never touched that desk that week, only taken notes beside it.
I held her hand: "I’m sorry — I misjudged you."
Paragraph 1: One Friday, the bracelet turned up under Jenny’s own textbook. When Jenny pulled it out, her face flushed red at once. We all froze, no one daring to speak first. I glanced at Linda; her expression was so calm it hurt to see. She simply packed her bag and walked out, her shoulders straight. After class we silently drifted apart, and none of us could enjoy our lunch that day. That night I lay awake, asking myself how we could have been so blind — and so cruel — to a girl who had done nothing but sit beside me in silence.
Paragraph 2: I stayed behind after class and walked up to Linda. I caught up with her and offered her a bottle of water: "About that day, I’d like to hear it from you." She stopped and turned back; her eyes held no resentment, only a hint of surprise. She said calmly that she had never touched that desk that week, only taken notes beside it. I held her hand: "I’m sorry — I misjudged you." From then on, I learned that joining in laughter is the easiest way to hurt someone, and that real courage is daring to say "I’m sorry" before the wound goes any deeper.

One Friday, the bracelet turned up under Jenny’s own textbook. I stayed behind after class and walked up to Linda.
【词汇激活】动作类:give sb the cold shoulder(冷落某人), drift apart(渐渐疏远), catch up with(追上), hold sb’s hand(握住某人的手);情绪类:unjust(不公的), guilty(愧疚的), resentful(怨恨的), ashamed(羞愧的)。
【点睛】"real courage is daring to say 'I’m sorry' before the wound goes any deeper."
