Advice from the Kid Expert
Offering solutions to life’s little problems
Too small? No such thing! Size has some advantages
but the sport is about much more than that. Basketball
requires lots of skills, such as shooting, passing and speed. Many NBA players shorter than six feet tall have had successful careers. Find a coach or gym teacher who is willing to offer training courses to improve your skills. Practice it over and over, and ask for tips on how to improve it.
Ooh, lots! What kind of things do you enjoy the most? Make a “fun-tivities’ list for when you are stuck for ideas.Don’t know what you like? A trip to the library may help. A librarian can show you lots of hobby and activity materials. Your mom may have suggestions for you, too, since she knows you so well.
It sure can be hard to focus your attention at times - especially if a lot is going on around you. Try to find a quiet place to work. If noises distract you, ask a parent if noise-canceling headphones might help. Set a timer for 15 minutes. See what you can get done in that time period. When it sounds, stand up and walk around for a few minutes. Then reset the timer and continue.
ADVICE FROM YOU

“I hate fractions (分数),” Ella said as she walked into the kitchen.
“It’s not nice to hate,” Mom said as she finished cutting the onions. “Why don’t you like fractions?” she asked.
“I don’t understand them at all! I’m just not a clever girl.”
“Everyone learns at a different speed, Ella. You are a very smart girl.”
“I don’t even know why I have to learn them. What’s the point? I’m never going to need a fraction in my whole life.”
“Let’s not worry about fractions right now. Instead, would you like to help me make cookies?”
“Okay.” Ella said.
“Here. You put the ingredients in the pan and I will cook them.” Mom placed sugar, milk, peanut butter and some measuring cups close to the pan. “First, put one full cup of sugar into the pan.”
Ella gently pulled out a full cup of sugar and poured it into the pan.
“Good,” Mom said. “Now, I need a little more. I need three-fourths of a cup. That is more than half of the cup, but not all the way to the top. Fill it halfway first.” Ella filled the cup halfway full.
“Okay. Now, see that line a little way up? That is three-fourths of a cup. Add enough sugar until it reaches that line.”
Ella put a little more sugar into the cup until it reached the line.
“Great! Pour it into the pan. Next, we need one-half cup of milk. Here is the measuring cup. Fill it to the half cup line with milk.”
Ella slowly poured one-half cup of milk.
“Now I have to cook it for one and a half minutes. After that, all we need to do is to add one teaspoon of vanilla and one-half cup of peanut butter.” Mom turned to Ella.
“I see what you are doing. You are showing me I need to understand fractions,” Ella said with a smile.
Mom laughed. “And you were understanding! You just need a little more practice.”
“Okay. I understand now. Fractions are important. Without fractions, we wouldn’t be able to make cookies!”
Ella and Mom both laughed.
1. What did Ella think of fractions at first?
A. Difficult and useless. B. Important but boring.
C. Necessary and interesting. D. Unusual but challenging.
2. Ella changed her thought towards fractions when __________.
A. she was talking about her worries B. Mom told her that she was smart
C. she was helping Mom make cookies D. Mom asked her to do more exercises
3. What has Ella probably learnt from this experience?
A. Life is not as boring as we think.
B. Interest is the best teacher for us.
C. Food usually brings us life-long happiness.
D. Learning comes from hands-on experiences.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming part of everyday life. According to a 2024 Pew Research survey, most AI experts (专家) say adults in the United States communicate with AI several times a day. Should people be polite to AI? Should we say “please” and “thank you” to chatbots? Here’s what four kids say about it. What’s your opinion? Please join in the discussion.
Aubrey Lamirault, 11
Los Angeles, California
Being polite isn’t just about having good manners. It can also lead to better results. AI systems learn from communicating with people. This means that how a person behaves decides AI’s answers. Using polite language is a good idea. It can lead to better information with fewer errors (错误). Just as the saying goes, kindness goes a long way!
Hanming Wang, 10
Saratoga, California
AI doesn’t have feelings. Sometimes, being less polite means being more honest. You can say exactly what you mean. Too many polite words can confuse (使……困惑) AI.
Someone might use AI to improve a paragraph with a lot of errors. But if they say, “Could you please make some small changes?” it might only make tiny changes. In this example, being too polite hides how big the problems are. AI won’t do what you really need it to do.
Ethan Yu, 12
Queens, New York
Our world needs more kindness. When we practice it, whether toward people or technology (技术), kindness can spread. Being kind, even to AI, can bring good habits.
Some argue that there’s no need to be polite to AI. It doesn’t have feelings. But being polite to AI can help us become more thoughtful. It’s a small choice, but it can make a big difference.
Asha Curley, 11
Scottsdale, Arizona
AI helps people to be more efficient (有效率的). But does AI really need to see the words “please” or “thank you”? No. You don’t have to be too polite to AI. Just focus on being simple. This is good practice in business and technology.
Being polite to other people is necessary. But being wise about using AI is more important than being polite to it.
1. This passage may be written for ________.
A. young students B. young parents C. school teachers D. AI experts
2. Who thinks we should be polite to AI?
A. Aubrey and Hanming. B. Aubrey and Ethan.
C. Hanming and Ethan. D. Hanming and Asha.
3. What’s the purpose of writing this article?
A. To present different ideas about being polite to AI.
B. To explain why we have different opinions on AI.
C. To discuss the differences between AI and humans.
D. To ask teenagers to communicate with AI politely.

To keep a healthy weight, the key is to understand what your body needs.
Wang Yan, a doctor from Raffles Hospital in Beijing with over 30 years of experience, is worried about teenagers getting mixed messages about weight. “Many kids think getting thinner means being healthier, but even thin people can have too much inner fat,” she said. Different from the fat just under the skin, this kind of fat sits around important parts inside your body (like your heart and liver) and is more likely to cause long-term health problems.
Body mass index (BMI) is a common way to check if your weight is healthy, but there’s a catch. “Teenagers should compare their BMI with their own growth charts, not with adult rules,” Wang stressed. “Sometimes, when kids grow taller, the weight they gained earlier naturally goes away.”
She also pointed out that someone with a normal BMI might still have too much body fat. Usually, if you get tired very quickly when exercising, it could be a sign of a weight problem.
As for very strict or unhealthy eating habits, Wang pointed out they can be bad for your muscles. Using banned weight-loss products is not a good idea either. “They mostly work by forcing your heart to beat faster to use more energy. That could lead to health problems,” she said.
To control your weight properly, small steps work best. “Eat balanced meals every day; Half your plate should be vegetables and fruits, one quarter foods that help build muscles (like chicken or eggs), and one quarter healthy grains (like whole wheat bread or brown rice),” Wang said. “Doing exercises every week is important too.”
1. A 13-year-old boy is 1.6 meters tall and weighs 56 kilograms. According to the BMI chart provided, which level does he fall into?
A. Underweight. B. Healthy. C. Overweight. D. Obese.
2. Why does Dr. Wang tell teenagers to use growth charts instead of adult BMI standards?
A. Teenagers’ growth types are significantly different.
B. Adult standards are for medical professionals only.
C. Growth charts can work out the weight they gained.
D. Growth charts are simpler than the adult standards.
3. According to Dr. Wang, quickly feeling tired during exercise may show ________.
A. a need for more healthy grains
B. a lack of exercise for the heart
C. the effect of dangerous weight-loss pills
D. high body fat even with a normal weight

In September 2025, China achieved another engineering wonder—the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou Province. Standing 625 meters above the river (taller than two Eiffel Towers stacked together), this bridge is the world’s highest and a symbol of China’s infrastructure (基建) strength.
Key Facts
Length: 2,890 meters (main span (跨径): 1,420 meters)
Construction Time: 2022–2025
Challenge: Building at extreme heights with strong winds and Karst mountains (喀斯特).
Engineering Marvels
Workers faced challenges like controlling concrete temperatures and securing steep slopes (陡坡防护). The builders described the process of installing the main cables (缆绳) as “threading a needle 600 meters up in the air.” These main cables are strong enough to hold three “Liaoning” aircraft carriers, using China’s BeiDou satellite system for millimeter-level precision (精准).
Impact (影响) on Life
Before the bridge, crossing the canyon took about 2 hours by winding mountain roads. Now, it takes just 2 minutes! What’s more interesting is that this bridge is more than just a road. Guizhou is playing a bigger game, aiming to turn the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge into a world-class tourist landmark. This is a creative model known as “bridge-tourism integration,” where the bridge itself is the core attraction. This bridge also boosts local tourism, agriculture, and small businesses by connecting remote areas. In the future, it will connect bridge sightseeing, extreme sports, and tourist services, encouraging visitors not just to “pass through,” but to “fall in love” with the place.
Guizhou now has over 30,000 bridges, including the world’s three tallest. Nearly half of the world’s top 100 highest bridges are located in Guizhou, earning it the nickname “World Bridge Museum.” The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is part of the engineering wonder. China’s infrastructure focuses on technology and people’s needs. Therefore, the opening of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is more than just the birth of a new world record. It writes a new chapter of “turning chasms into roads” and becomes a mark of China’s speed and wisdom.
48. How tall is the Huajiang Bridge?
A. 2890 meters B. 625 meters C. 1420 meters D. 600 meters
49. What does “bridge-tourism integration” mean?
A. Using bridges for transport only. B. Connecting bridges with tourism attractions.
C. Selling bridges as souvenirs. D. Boosts local tourism.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The history of bridge construction in Guizhou.
B. The difficulties in building the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge.
C. The achievements and importance of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge.
D. The comparison between Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge and other bridges.

The Comic Relief charity, an organization that helps people in need, uses laughter to raise money. Every two years in spring, many English people put on a red nose, make a fool of themselves and do “silly” things to make themselves and others laugh. Here are some examples of “silly things” you can do.
Invite friends to your house to watch funny films. They have to pay to watch the film—those with the most comfortable chairs pay more—and for food and drinks.
Hold a talent show at school and ask your friends and teachers to sing dance or tell jokes.
Sell tickets for the show to the rest of the school.
Have a “red nose party” at your house. All your friends come dressed in red-including red nose and you serve red food and drinks. If they don’t wear red, they have to pay a fine.
Get the students at your school to make funny sculptures (雕塑品), using all kinds of art materials. Sell tickets to your Red Nose Day exhibition (展览). People can buy a red nose at supermarkets, and part of the money goes to Comic Relief.
The organization has helped people for 35 years by 2020. And how much money have they collected since the first Red Nose Day? More than 600 million! The idea of Red Nose Day has travelled to other countries, too. In New Zealand, for example, people have made big red noses which they put on the front of cars and even buildings!
28. What is Comic Relief?
A. An organization that helps people in need. B. A talent show that is held at school.
C. An exhibition that shows funny sculptures. D. A red nose party that is held at home.
29. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce a special charity. B. To teach people how to make money.

Finn sighed (叹气) and threw his windpack by the front door. He kicked off his shoes and walked into the kitchen.
“Finn, did you hang up your windpack like I asked you?” asked Mum. “I’m tired of tripping (绊倒) over it all the time.”
“I had to walk the whole 3 miles home today!” said Finn.
“Why did you have to walk?” Grandpa asked. “What’s wrong with your windpack?”
“The compressor (压缩机) is broken again. Windpacks are so much work,” he complained to Grandpa. “I wish they’d create something that is easier to take care of.”
Grandpa smiled, “Finn, you have no idea how easy and clean windpacks are compared (比较) to cars.”
“You never actually had a car, did you?” Finn asked. “I thought those were no longer in use before you were old enough to have one of your own.”
Grandpa pulled a small, thin photocard out of his wallet. He typed in a few numbers. “I think I have these organized by year,” he said. “I bought my car around 2025.”

Grandpa continued pushing buttons (按钮) till he came to a colour photo of himself as a young man. He stood proudly next to a huge dark red vehicle (车辆): “This kind of car was called a truck,” Grandpa told Finn.
“Tell me again what made them run,” Finn said.
“Gas,” answered Grandpa, “ ▲ ,” he added. “In the last 50 years, pollution has been reduced by 75%. I am certain that you and I will both live longer because of it.”
Finn was quiet for a moment. “Grandpa, I guess windpacks aren’t as much of a pain as I sometimes think they are.”

In recent years, new consumption trends (消费趋势) have appeared among Chinese teenagers. These trends show their changing lifestyles and values.
One of the trends is “rational consumption”. Unlike before, many teenagers now pay more attention to the practical value of products. For example, when buying a pair of shoes, they will check the quality, comfort and price carefully. They are also more willing to buy products from Chinese brands. A survey shows that 72% of teenagers said they would choose a Chinese brand if its quality and price are good.
Another trend is “eco-friendly consumption”. More and more teenagers care about environmental problems. They prefer to buy eco-friendly products, such as bamboo toothbrushes and clothes made from recycled materials. Some teenagers even start to “second-hand shopping”. They buy old books, clothes and electronic products from second-hand websites. They think this not only saves money but also reduces waste.
“Experience consumption” is also becoming popular. Teenagers are willing to spend money on experiences rather than material products. For example, they may spend money on travelling, attending concerts, taking online courses or doing outdoor activities. A 16-year-old boy from Beijing said, “I will use my pocket money to go hiking with my friends but not buy a new toy. The memories from the trip are more valuable to me.”
These new consumption trends show that Chinese teenagers are becoming more mature and responsible. They are not only thinking about their own needs but also caring about the environment and society.
1. Why do teenagers like “second-hand shopping”?
A. Because second-hand products are more fashionable.
B. Because they want to follow foreign trends.
C. Because it saves money and reduces waste.
D. Because second-hand products are of better quality.
2. Which of the following is an example of “experience consumption”?
A. Buying a new pair of shoes. B. Buying a second-hand book.
C. Attending a music concert. D. Buying a reusable water bottle.
3. What can we learn from the new consumption trends of Chinese teenagers?
A. They only care about their own needs.
B. They are becoming more mature and responsible.
C. They don’t like Chinese brands at all.
D. They are not interested in material products any more.

Why do some people go through hard times better? Because they have resilience—the ability to get back up and stay strong. Good news! Resilience can be learned, not just born with. Here are five tips to build resilience.
Stay connected
Don’t face problems alone. Talk to people you trust—friends, parents or teachers. Adults may not understand everything, but they’ve also faced challenges and can offer helpful advice. Also, consider joining school clubs or sports teams—being part of a community builds support and confidence.
Take control
When facing difficulties or uncertainty, take small steps to regain a sense of control. Just do small things like making the bed. Pay attention to what you can change, not what you can’t.
Express yourself
Sometimes, it’s just too hard to talk to someone about how you feel. If talking isn’t working, try other ways to let out your emotions (情感) like keeping a diary or creating art.
Take care of yourself
Be sure to look after yourself. Getting enough sleep is very important. If you don’t, you may get angry and nervous easily when you have to stay sharp (机敏的). A well-rested body and mind deal better with challenges.
Look at the big picture
Your problem seems huge now, but bad times won’t last. You’ve driven away fears before—you can do it again! Simple skills can help: picturing calm places, listening to favourite music, or just breathing slowly. Life changes, but important things stay.
Developing resilience is a personal journey. Each challenge makes you more resilient, though you don’t see it yet. Just like building muscles (肌肉), resilience grows stronger with practice. Remember to ask for help when you need it. This is also a sign of strength.
1. What is resilience according to the passage?
A. It is the ability to avoid as many difficulties as possible in life.
B. It is the ability to ask trusted people for help during hard times.
C. It is the ability to take control of difficulties and uncertainty in life.
D. It is the ability to feel better fast after experiencing unpleasant things.
2. “Sharing your problems with others can reduce stress and help you see things differently.” Which tip does this sentence most probably come from?
A. Stay connected B. Express yourself
C. Take care of yourself D. Look at the big picture
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Problems will go away if you pay no attention to them.
B. Growth comes from daily practice and asking for help.
C. Building muscle strength can solve every life challenge.
D. Smart teenagers should stay away from hard challenges.

“Everyone learns at a different speed, Ella. You are a very smart girl.”
“I don’t even know why I have to learn them. What’s the point? I’m never going to need a fraction in my whole life.”
“Let’s not worry about fractions right now. Instead, would you like to help me make cookies?”
“Okay.” Ella said.
“Here. You put the ingredients in the pan and I will cook them.” Mom placed sugar, milk, peanut butter and some measuring cups close to the pan. “First, put one full cup of sugar into the pan.”

“I see what you are doing. You are showing me I need to understand fractions,” Ella said with a smile.
Mom laughed. “And you were understanding! You just need a little more practice.”

Finn sighed (叹气) and threw his windpack by the front door. He kicked off his shoes and walked into the kitchen.
“Finn, did you hang up your windpack like I asked you?” asked Mum. “I’m tired of tripping (绊倒) over it all the time.”
