In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on December 26th. It is the following day after Christmas Day. In fact, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it’s a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.
The origin (起源) of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by an important person on each ship. Those sailors who wanted to have a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed (封印) up and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the important person. But he wouldn’t open it to share them with the poor until Christmas.
One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. The people put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas, that is why that day became known as Boxing Day.
Today, many businesses, organizations and families try to keep the traditional spirit of Boxing Day. They give away their time, services and money to Food Banks. And they offer gifts to the poor to help families in need. Besides, spending time with family and shopping are popular Boxing Day activities now.

Play is more than just fun—it matters a lot to growth and learning. That’s why the United Nations (联合国) picks “Choose Play—Every Day” as this year’s theme (主题) for the World Children’s Day. We celebrate this day every year on November 20, and this year, the UN wants to remind us that every child should have time to relax, play, and join in creative activities.
As a supporter of children’s rights, Emma actively prepares fun activities for the World Children’s Day. She believes the day is both fun and meaningful, because through play, children make new friends, learn to go through difficult situations, and even learn leadership skills by solving problems together.
In some poor areas, many kids still live in hard situations. To help them, the UN sets up Child Friendly Spaces. There, kids can play, learn and share their feelings. Most importantly, these spaces are safe. They let these kids feel like they’re living a normal life (正常生活) again.
This year, the UN makes a special playlist on Brighter Kids (an app for the Day) with videos about playing and learning. So why not play today—and every day? It does more good than you might think!

The tradition of tree-planting has a long history in China. Every year on March 12th, Chinese Arbor Day, millions of people across the country go out to plant trees. But do you know why we choose this special day?
In 1915, the Chinese government first set Tomb-Sweeping Day, April 5th, as Arbor Day. Later, in 1928, the date was changed to March 12th to remember Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who called on people to plant more trees and protect the environment. March 12th is also right before the spring planting season, which is a good time for trees to grow.
Planting trees is very important for our environment. Trees can clean the air by taking in carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. They provide homes for birds and other animals. Their roots hold the soil together and prevent floods. Trees also help cool the earth and make our cities more beautiful.
In recent years, China has made great progress in tree planting. According to research, China has planted more than 70 billion trees since 1949. The Saihanba Forest is a good example. It was once a desert, but after years of hard work by three generations of foresters, it has become the largest man-made forest in the world.
Everyone can do something for a greener world. Besides planting trees, we can also save paper, take care of trees around us and live a low-carbon life.
1.When is Chinese Arbor Day?

2.Why was the date changed to March 12th?

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year.
The festival has a history of over 2,000 years and is closely associated with the poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was a loyal minister of the State of Chu during the Warring States Period. When his state was defeated, he drowned himself in the Miluo River out of sorrow. Local people rowed boats to try to save him and threw rice dumplings into the water to prevent fish from eating his body.
Today, people celebrate the festival in several ways. The most famous tradition is dragon boat racing. Teams of paddlers race in long boats decorated with dragon heads. Another important tradition is eating zongzi—sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves with various fillings such as pork, beans, or dates.
The festival is not only celebrated in China but also in many other Asian countries. In 2009, it was added to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

On the evening of September 29, 2025, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) at Paris University held its first “Mid-Autumn Garden Party” by the Seine River. More than 200 people came — not only Chinese students, but also French teachers and local neighbors.
The party started with a short play Chang’e Flying to the Moon, performed by four Chinese students in hanfu. Then came the fun part: guessing lantern riddles (灯谜). The riddles were written in both Chinese and French, so even foreigners could join. “I guessed one! The answer is ‘moon cake’!” laughed Sophie, a French girl who just started learning Chinese this term.
In the corner, two students were teaching people to make lanterns with bamboo strips (竹条) and rice paper. Nearby, an elderly French couple were tasting mooncakes carefully. “This one with egg yolk is my favorite,” the lady said. “It tastes like sunshine.”
But the highlight (亮点) was at 9 p.m. — everyone walked to the riverside, lit a small paper lantern, and floated it on the water while whispering a wish. “In China, we say ‘the moon on the sea grows round, we share it from far and wide’,” said Lin Xin, the organizer. “Tonight, the Seine becomes our ‘sea’, and the lanterns carry our thoughts home.”

Passage 1
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year.
