The Spring Festival is one of the most important festivals both in China and around the world. What do you usually do on this festival? Clean up the rooms, hang red lanterns or watch the Spring Festival Gala ? All of them are traditions during the Spring Festival. But there is another key part to the celebrations: putting up the red Spring Festival couplets! Couplets, also named duilian, are a special form of literature (文学) in China. They came from taofu in the Zhou Dynasty and people put up couplets on the door to keep away from evil spirits (辟邪). Every Spring Festival, whether in cities or villages, rich or poor, every family will carefully choose a pair of red couplets and put it up. Here are a few rules for the couplets. They have two lines. The first line is on the right, and the second line is on the left. Each line must have the same number of words. The second line is similar to the first line in both grammar and artistic conception (构思). Finally, a short phrase called crossing is also needed to make up the couplets. The words on the couplets are always simple but meaningful, which show people’s good wishes. Nowadays, more and more foreigners begin to celebrate the Spring Festival. Let’s take a look at two English couplets with Chinese characteristics . 1.What Spring Festival tradition is NOT mentioned in the passage? A.Hanging red lanterns. B.Buying new clothes. C.Watching the Spring Festival Gala. D.Putting up the couplets. 2.According to the passage, which is the best for ▲ in the second couplet? D.The words on the couplets will come true the next year. 4.What is the best title for this passage? Each line must have the same number of words. The second line is similar to the first line in both grammar and artistic conception (构思).”可知,每联字数必须相等,下联在语法和意境上需与上联呼应。横批为“Happy New Year”,上联为“Best Wishes for the Year to Come”,下联应表达对未来一年的美好祝愿,且在字数、语法和意境上与之相匹配。选项B“Good Luck for the Road to Go”与上联较为匹配。故选B。 3. Passage 2(火把节以及火对彝族人的重要性) Do you know a festival for fire? Luckily, we human beings have realized the problem. Something must be done to stop pollution. It’s our duty to protect our Mother Earth. In order to live a better life, in September 1969, at a conference in Seattle, Washington, Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that in the spring of 1970, there would be a nationwide environmental activity. That was the concept of Earth Day. “It was a wish,” he recalls, “but it worked.” On April 22nd, 1970, World Earth Day was first observed. That day, 20 million people attended the movement in the US. On April 22, 1990, more than 200 million people in 141 countries took part in Earth Day celebrations. Earth Day 2007 was one of the largest Earth Days. It has a long history of more than 4,000 years. It’s also the country’s most important traditional festival. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization added “Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year” to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产) on December 4, 2024. Rao Quan, a vice minister (副部长), thanked people for their support at the meeting. The Spring Festival, he said, stands for the Chinese people’s hopes for a better life. Over the years, it has provided lasting spiritual strength (精神力量) for the Chinese people, he added. The festival falls on the first day of the Chinese calendar. It marks the start of the new year. Preparations for it begin weeks before Chinese New Year’s Day. Celebrations for the Spring Festival last for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. These include family gatherings, big dinners, and different kinds of cultural activities. The festival starts at the dining table in every family. Spring Festival food traditions play an important role in the culture of Chinese diet. From dumplings to sticky rice cakes, from fried meatballs to red-cooked fish, and from the north to the south, all dishes carry the best wishes for people’s loved ones during the Spring Festival. There are many other old traditions as well. For example, people hang up red lanterns and set off fireworks. These practices are believed to keep away the beast called nian since the beast was afraid of loud noise and the color red. They also write the Chinese character Fu and stick Spring Festival couplets on their doors for good luck. Paper cutting, dragon dances and Lantern Festival events are important parts of the celebrations as well. Together they form some of the happiest days of the year for Chinese people.
