Every year in May, art galleries and museums prepare shows to honor Leonardo Da Vinci, who died in France on May 2, 1519. He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting — Landscape 8P which, they think, is Da Vinci’s earliest-known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images (图像), not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5, 1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “mirror-writing”. It’s a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells about an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, “Leonardo was born left-handed, but was taught to write with his right hand from a very young age. By looking at his writings, including from this drawing, we can see his right-handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples (样本) and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list. It will be part of an exhibit at Italy’s Uffizi Gallery. The gallery director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo’s drawing technique and his abilities in writing.
8. Which of the following mentioned in the text has been studied by researchers recently?
A. The Mona Lisa. B. Landscape 8P.
C. Mirror-writing. D. The Last Supper.
9. What does the writing on the back probably tell about?
A. A statement about the painting. B. An introduction about Leonardo.
C. An agreement to produce a painting. D. Something about the city of Florence.
10. What can we learn about Leonardo from Cecilia’s words?
A. He could write with either of his hands. B. He did bad in right-handed handwriting.
C. He wasn’t good at writing with his left hand. D. He taught himself to write with right hand.
11. What’s Eike Schmidt’s attitude towards the research?
A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. D
【解析】

Last semester, our class organized a voluntary activity to help the elderly in the nearby community. I was unwilling to join at first, for I was not good at communicating with strangers and preferred to stay alone in my spare time. However, my deskmate Mia, an outgoing and warm-hearted girl, insisted that we should take part together to do something meaningful.
On a cold Saturday morning, we arrived at the community center. Many lonely elderly people were waiting there, some of whom lived alone and seldom talked with others. I stood nervously in the corner, not knowing what to say or do. Seeing this, Mia came over and patted my shoulder gently. She taught me how to chat with the elderly, listen to their stories patiently, and help them clean their rooms carefully.
Little by little, I followed Mia’s advice and tried to talk with an elderly grandma named Wang. Grandma Wang shared her interesting childhood stories with me, and her smiling face made me feel warm and relaxed. I gradually forgot my nervousness and enjoyed the time with the elderly. But soon, I accidentally knocked over a vase on the table. I froze at once, feeling extremely embarrassed and guilty.
Worried that I had upset Grandma Wang, I lowered my head, not daring to look at her.

【答案】例文
Paragraph 1: Mia calmed me down immediately and helped me clean up the broken pieces. She walked to me quietly and held my trembling hand, telling me not to feel ashamed or scared. Instead of blaming me, she picked up the broom and swept the glass pieces carefully, asking me to fetch a dustpan. Then she turned to Grandma Wang with a polite smile, saying sorry for the accidental mess. To my great relief, the kind grandma waved her hand gently, saying it didn’t matter at all. She even comforted me softly, telling me to relax and enjoy the voluntary time. With Mia’s company, I got over my embarrassment soon and continued to stay with grandma warmly.
Paragraph 2: Thanks to Mia’s selfless help and timely comfort, I didn’t lose courage but learned to face my mistakes bravely. After that day, we became closer friends and kept participating in community volunteer work hand in hand. We often visited the elderly, listened to their life stories, and did small things to bring them joy. I also became more outgoing and willing to reach out to people around me. What this experience taught me is that true friendship is about supporting each other in difficult moments, and spreading love and warmth to others is the most beautiful thing in our life.

C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
D
As cities continue to grow, the need for efficient and sustainable food production has never been greater. UrbanSprout, an innovative company, has introduced Rooftop Green, a garden system that transforms urban rooftops into lively green spaces providing fresh produce directly to city residents.
Rooftop Green is designed to be adaptable, serving small households as well as large commercial buildings. By developing otherwise unused rooftop space, it provides a practical solution to the problem of urban food deserts. The system is remarkably easy to maintain and promises a constant supply of organic vegetables and herbs.
The technology behind Rooftop Green includes smart sensors and an automatic watering system. The latter improves plant growth with minimal water use. Connected to a mobile app, the sensors give users insights into plant health, growth stages, and proper harvest times. The app ensures that even green-hand gardeners can successfully plant their crops with confidence.
By creating green oases (绿洲) in urban areas, Rooftop Green not only cuts the carbon footprint associated with food transport but also enhances urban biodiversity. Furthermore, it reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers, making it an environmentally friendly option for responsible citizens.
UrbanSprout employees integrate the company’s eco-friendly values in their daily routines. They actively participate in community gardening and conservation projects, promoting sustainability within and beyond the workplace. “Our goal is to develop a culture that values green living,” explained an UrbanSprout representative.
Rooftop Green is more than an agricultural innovation. It is part of a broader movement towards sustainable urban living. For those looking to make a positive environmental impact, it offers an accessible and impactful way to engage with sustainability.
12. What is the main purpose of Rooftop Green?
A. To generate profits through commercial farming.
