The Driver’s Last Choice
At 7:05 on a grey morning, Bus 32 left the terminal with forty passengers on board. Behind the wheel sat David, a driver with twenty years of clean records. He greeted every passenger with a nod, as he always did.
Halfway through the route, David felt a sudden pain in his chest. His vision blurred and his left arm went numb. Any driver in such a state might have tried to pull over quickly. But the bus was on a narrow bridge, with no safe shoulder to stop on. A wrong move could send the whole bus into the river below.
David did not panic. He pressed the horn to warn the cars ahead, then steered the heavy bus slowly toward the only flat ground he could see at the far end of the bridge. His face was pale, and sweat ran down his forehead, but his hands never left the wheel.
When the bus finally came to a stop, passengers rushed to help him. “We owe you our lives,” an old lady said, her voice shaking. David managed a weak smile and whispered, “I just did what I had to do.” He was taken to hospital at once. The doctors said a few more minutes’ delay might have been fatal.
Later, a reporter asked David why he had risked his life for strangers. He answered quietly, “Forty people trusted me with their safety. When you accept a duty, you ought to see it through. I couldn’t have lived with myself if I had let them down.”
David survived, and the story spread. People called him a hero, but he waved the word away. “I am no hero,” he said. “I am just a man who refused to let fear make the decision for him.”
The Driver’s Last Choice
我的预测(突发状况):________________________________
我的预测(他的选择):________________________________

You must tell the truth.——你的本意是“你应该说实话”,但 must 在英语里是“必须、强制”,对方听到的是“你没有不做的选择”。同样表达“该做”,should 比 must 软,could 比 should 更软,might 几乎等于“你看着办吧”。
• I just did what I had to do.(我做了我不得不做的——have to,客观责任)
• When you accept a duty, you ought to see it through.(一旦接受责任,就应当坚持到底——ought to,道义上该做)
• I couldn’t have lived with myself if I had let them down.(我本无法原谅自己——couldn’t have done,对过去的假设评价)
• You should apologize to your friend.(你应该道歉——直接建议)
• You could try talking to him first.(你可以先试着谈谈——给出一种可能,更委婉)
• You might want to think it over.(也许你想再考虑一下——最委婉,给对方面子)
① 看题干中是否有“规则/义务/责任”信号词(rule, duty, promise, must 的语境)→ 有则优先 must / have to / ought to;
② 看说话人与对方的关系——是“长辈对晚辈、老师对学生”(直接建议,should),还是“朋友对朋友、陌生人对陌生人”(委婉建议,could / might);
语篇里 couldn’t have lived with myself 是“假设评价”,而 A few more minutes’ delay might have been fatal
should have done
You should have told me.
ought to have done
He ought to have apologized.
could have done
You could have helped.
needn’t have done
You needn’t have worried.
must have done
The ground is wet — it must have rained last night.
may / might / could have done
She might have missed the bus.
can’t / couldn’t have done
He can’t have forgotten.
must 证据足,might 证据弱;should / could 评对错,needn’t 说多余。
当题干出现“still”“yet”“on the chair”等反证线索时,can’t have done 是唯一正确的否定推测结构。
1. 基础档
1. You ______ respect your teacher even if you disagree with her. It’s a basic rule of our school.
A. could B. ought to C. might D. would
2. You ______ finish the task today; tomorrow is also fine.
A. don’t have to B. mustn’t C. can’t D. shouldn’t
3. —Mum, must I finish all the vegetables?
—No, you ______. Just eat the carrots if you like.
A. mustn’t B. needn’t C. can’t D. shouldn’t
4. You ______ leave the classroom until the bell rings.
A. mustn’t B. needn’t C. can’t D. wouldn’t
2. 中档
1. I can’t find my keys anywhere. I ______ have left them in the office.
A. must have left B. should have left C. might have left D. would have left
2. You ______ have told me the truth earlier. Now it’s too late to fix the plan.
A. should B. might C. would D. need
3. She ______ have left already; her coat is still on the chair.
A. mustn’t B. can’t C. shouldn’t D. needn’t
1. —Where is Tom? He promised to be here by nine.
—He ______ have missed the early bus, I’m not sure. It was raining heavily, but he usually gets up early.
A. must B. should C. could D. need
2. Passengers ______ fasten their seat belts during take-off and landing.
A. must B. might C. could D. would
3. —Why didn’t you tell me about the meeting?
—I’m sorry. I ______ you, but I forgot your number.
A. must have called B. should have called C. could have called D. might have called
回到第6题:David 说 “I just did what I had to do” 用的是 had to(客观责任),而不是 should(道义该做)。 I did what I should do,暗示“我做了该做的,也可以不做”;had to do 则排除了任何其他选项。
I understand why you feel torn, but you shouldn’t help him cheat. You could encourage him to study with you instead, because real friendship rests on honesty, not on covering up mistakes. If he insists, you might remind him that a true friend would never put him in such a position. Stand by your virtue, and respond to his request with care but without compromise. That is the principle that keeps a friendship strong.

参考语段中 shouldn’t(明确判断)→ could(间接建议)→ might(试探性建议)的顺序即为“从明确判断到试探性建议”的梯度示范。
A young man named Leo worked at a small bakery. One evening, a homeless woman came in, hungry and trembling. She asked if she could have a piece of bread without paying.
Leo knew he 1. ______ not simply give away the shop’s goods without permission, but he 2. ______ (not) stand by and watch her suffer either. He made a quick decision: he told her that the bakery 3. ______ (be) about to close, and offered her the leftover bread as “a gift from the owner.”
The woman thanked him, her eyes 4. ______ (fill) with tears. Later, when the owner learned what Leo had done, he was not angry. “You 5. ______ have asked me first,” he said, “but your 6. ______ (kind) did no harm.” He even praised Leo’s quick thinking.
Leo realised that rules 7. ______ sometimes give way to compassion. He understood that a warm heart 8. ______ (need) no formal permission to do good. From that day on, he often told himself, “Everyone 9. ______ to leave a little warmth in the world.” 10. ______ small act of kindness reminded the whole street that warmth can travel further than any coin.
— I left my phone at home. Could I use yours for a moment?
— Of course. But you ______ tell anyone that I lent it to you. It’s a secret.
A. mustn’t B. needn’t C. might not D. couldn’t
The roads were wet this morning. The school bus ______ have arrived late, but I’m not sure — the driver didn’t mention any delay.
A. must B. might C. should D. need
A kind stranger helped the old man carry his groceries up the stairs. The old man said he 1. ______ (can) not have managed it alone. He 2. ______ (warm) thanked the stranger and said, “People like you 3. ______ to be praised more often.”

David survived, and the story spread. People called him a hero, but he waved the word away. “I am no hero,” he said. “I am just a man who refused to let fear make the decision for him.”
The Driver’s Last Choice
1. What happened to David while he was driving the bus?
A. He got lost on the bridge.
B. He suddenly fell ill with chest pain.
C. He quarrelled with a passenger.
D. He ran out of fuel halfway.
答案:B
题干问“行驶中发生了什么”,回看第二段 David 出现的第一个异常——felt a sudden pain in his chest,正是 B 项 fell ill with chest pain。
2. Why did David not stop the bus immediately?
A. Because he could not find the brake.
B. Because the bus was on a narrow bridge with no safe shoulder.
C. Because a passenger was blocking the aisle.
D. Because he wanted to reach the terminal first.
答案:B
这一题考“原因”,答案就写在原文明说的那一句——the bus was on a narrow bridge, with no safe shoulder to stop on。
3. The phrase “a few more minutes’ delay might have been fatal” implies that ______.
A. David arrived at the hospital on time
B. David received treatment just in time
C. the doctors were too slow to act
D. the passengers refused to call for help
B 项 received treatment just in time 是对隐含信息的准确推断。
A(arrived at the hospital on time),因为 on time 在字面上与“及时”接近。 When the bus finally came to a stop, passengers rushed to help him. He was taken to hospital at once——说明乘客第一时间施救、送医,强调的不是“按计划到达”,而是“反应迅速、没有延误”。on time 对应“准时”,just in time 对应“刚好在临界点前”。
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Hero in the Hospital
B. A Driver Who Kept His Duty
C. The Bridge over the River
D. A Morning Rush Hour
A Driver Who Kept His Duty 既覆盖了“病发→控车→获救→自述”的完整链条,又直接呼应 David 那句 when you accept a duty, you ought to see it through。
The word “numb” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.(可选/弹性)
答案:A
前文写 his vision blurred and his left arm went numb,左臂与视力并列,都是身体出现异常的感知失灵信号,numb 描述的正是“失去知觉、麻木”的状态。
6. What can we infer from David’s words at the end of the passage?(可选/弹性)
A. He thought the passengers should thank him more.
B. He acted out of duty rather than fear.
C. He planned to retire from driving soon.
D. He expected to be praised as a hero.
I am just a man who refused to let fear make the decision for him,等于说“我因责任而非恐惧而行动”,与 B 项 acted out of duty rather than fear 直接对应;此前 when you accept a duty, you ought to see it through 又一次点出 duty 的分量。
① 看题干中是否有“规则/义务/责任”信号词(rule, duty, promise, must 的语境)→ 有则优先 must / have to / ought to;
② 看说话人与对方的关系——是“长辈对晚辈、老师对学生”(直接建议,should),还是“朋友对朋友、陌生人对陌生人”(委婉建议,could / might);
语篇里 couldn’t have lived with myself 是“假设评价”,而 A few more minutes’ delay might have been fatal

should have done
You should have told me.
ought to have done
He ought to have apologized.
could have done
You could have helped.
needn’t have done
You needn’t have worried.
must have done
The ground is wet — it must have rained last night.
may / might / could have done
She might have missed the bus.
can’t / couldn’t have done
He can’t have forgotten.
must 证据足,might 证据弱;should / could 评对错,needn’t 说多余。
当题干出现“still”“yet”“on the chair”等反证线索时,can’t have done 是唯一正确的否定推测结构。
1. 基础档
1. You ______ respect your teacher even if you disagree with her. It’s a basic rule of our school.
A. could B. ought to C. might D. would
2. You ______ finish the task today; tomorrow is also fine.
A. don’t have to B. mustn’t C. can’t D. shouldn’t
答案:A
3. —Mum, must I finish all the vegetables?
—No, you ______. Just eat the carrots if you like.
A. mustn’t B. needn’t C. can’t D. shouldn’t
4. You ______ leave the classroom until the bell rings.
A. mustn’t B. needn’t C. can’t D. wouldn’t
答案:A
until the bell rings
2. 中档
1. I can’t find my keys anywhere. I ______ have left them in the office.
A. must have left B. should have left C. might have left D. would have left
2. You ______ have told me the truth earlier. Now it’s too late to fix the plan.
A. should B. might C. would D. need
答案:A
Now it’s too late
3. She ______ have left already; her coat is still on the chair.
A. mustn’t B. can’t C. shouldn’t D. needn’t
can’t have done mustn’t 不用于推测,shouldn’t have done(本不应做)和 needn’t have done(本不必做)都是评价,不是否定推测。
1. —Where is Tom? He promised to be here by nine.
—He ______ have missed the early bus, I’m not sure. It was raining heavily, but he usually gets up early.
A. must B. should C. could D. need
答案:C
回答者先说 I’m not sure,摆明了不确定性;raining heavily 是迟到的可能原因,可 he usually gets up early 又在反向削弱它。 must 需要确定性,与 not sure 直接冲突;should have done 是责备,与“解释迟到原因”的目的不同。
本题 could 侧重于“存在这种可能性”,与 I’m not sure 及正反两面证据呼应;若选 might,则略偏“我倾向于认为可能发生过”,但题干中的 but he usually gets up early 削弱了这种倾向。
2. Passengers ______ fasten their seat belts during take-off and landing.
A. must B. might C. could D. would
答案:A
during take-off and landing 与 fasten their seat belts 构成了典型的安全规则语境,这类强制规定用 must。
注意参考语段中的梯度顺序:shouldn’t help(明确判断,划定底线)→ could encourage(给出一个可选的替代方案,语气变软)→ might remind(试探性提醒,把决定权交还给对方)。

1. must
前文 knew he ______ not simply give away 中 not 为否定标记,结合后文 without permission(未经许可)可知这里表“禁止、不允许”,语境是店规的外部约束,填 must,构成 must not 表禁止。
2. could
错误路径演示:很多学生看到 not stand by and watch her suffer(不忍心旁观)会填 would not,因为 would 表意愿。但仔细看前半句——he knew he must not simply give away 已经给了他一条“合法路径”(不能送),而 but 后的内容是他内心无法执行的“情感阻力”。
3. was
be about to close 是“正打算打烊”的过去将来结构,主语 bakery 单数,填 was about to。
4. filling
先看空的位置——The woman thanked him, her eyes ______ with tears,逗号后不是一个完整句(无谓语动词),因此只能作伴随状语。 His homework done, he went out to play.(作业做完,被动关系用 done。)
5. should
后文 but your kindness did no harm 的转折表明老板并非真正责备,而是温和指出“你本应先问我”,should have done 表“本应做而未做”的轻微批评,符合语境。
6. kindness
7. can
8. needs
9. ought
本空无提示词,空格后为 to leave(带 to 的不定式)。在情态动词中,只有 ought 后接带 to 的不定式(ought to do)。
10. The

— I left my phone at home. Could I use yours for a moment?
— Of course. But you ______ tell anyone that I lent it to you. It’s a secret.
A. mustn’t B. needn’t C. might not D. couldn’t
答案:A
The roads were wet this morning. The school bus ______ have arrived late, but I’m not sure — the driver didn’t mention any delay.
A. must B. might C. should D. need
答案:B
题干中 but I’m not sure 明确宣示了不确定性,因此不能用 must(几乎肯定)。
A kind stranger helped the old man carry his groceries up the stairs. The old man said he 1. ______ (can) not have managed it alone. He 2. ______ (warm) thanked the stranger and said, “People like you 3. ______ to be praised more often.”
答案:1. could 2. warmly 3. ought
• 第1空:could not have managed 表“本不可能独自完成”,是对过去能力的推测性评价,can 的过去式是 could。
• 第3空:无提示词,空格后为 to be praised(带 to 的不定式)。在情态动词中,只有 ought 后接带 to 的不定式(ought to do),其余如 should、must、could 后均接动词原形。
