Brandy was an old dog. When her owner died, the dog stayed near the house and waited for her owner to return. Some of the neighbors left food out for Brandy. As they thought the dog was friendly, they weren’t much concerned (担心的) about Brandy.
One day, Brandy walked into the neighbor’s yard and began playing with 18-month-old Adam. The young mother didn’t like the dirty dog at first. But seeing her son having fun playing with her, she decided to let Brandy stay.
One afternoon, the boy’s mother left Adam in the yard to play while she answered the phone. When she returned, he was gone. The mother was scared and called the police. They looked for Adam for six hours, but didn’t find him.
Then someone said he had heard barking (狗叫声) coming from the woods. So they all rushed to the woods. Adam was fast asleep against a tree. Brandy was keeping Adam there while one of her own legs dangled over (悬垂) a deep hole.
Brandy had followed Adam when he walked away. Seeing him in danger, she’d held him safely for all those hours. Adam’s mother was so grateful that Brandy spent the rest of her days with them. In Brandy’s honor, Adam’s mother founded (创办) Pets Alive, a pet-rescue (宠物救援) center in New York. She can’t save every animal, but she knows that if someone had put that old dog to sleep, she could have easily lost her only son.
5. What did Brandy do after her owner died?
A. She was sad and cried all day long. B. She waited for her owner to return.
C. She looked for food everywhere. D. She walked around in the community.
6. Which of the following is TRUE about Brandy?

第一段明确指出:“When her owner died, the dog stayed near the house and waited for her owner to return.”,说明Brandy在主人去世后等待主人回来。
第四段提到“Adam was fast asleep against a tree. Brandy was keeping Adam there...”,说明Brandy在Adam睡觉时保护了他的安全,D项正确。
(Adam’s mother was so grateful...),并以Brandy的名义创办了救援中心,因此目的是为了感谢和纪念Brandy。A、D项文中未提及;B项文中明确说“She can’t save every animal”,所以不是为了拯救所有动物。

Waving her 5-year-old daughter goodbye, Wang Yaping, together with Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, went into space aboard the Shenzhou XIII on Oct 16, 2021.
The 41-year-old Wang became the first woman astronaut to enter Tiangong space station. Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space. She told herself, “China now has a male (男性) astronaut. When will there be a female one?”At that time, Wang was a pilot in the Chinese army.
After having safe flights for 1,600 hours over nine years, Wang was a strong candidate(候选人)to become an astronaut in 2010. She pushed herself hard, getting the same training as men, including the pull-ups (引体向上) and barbells (杠铃). “The space environment won’t change because you are a woman,” she told Xinhua.
The hardest part is the high-G training. Sitting in a spinning (旋转的) machine, Wang would become blind for a while because her brain was short of blood. “There’s a red button (按钮),” said Wang. “If you can’t bear it, you can press (按动) it to stop.” But Wang never used it. “There is no such red button in my heart.”
That strong spirit finally led to realizing her dream in 2013. She joined the team for the Shenzhou X mission (任务).
Wang carries the spirit of every young woman who dreams of something big.

第一段“Waving her 5-year-old daughter goodbye, Wang Yaping, together with Zhai Zhigang and Ye Guangfu, went into space aboard the Shenzhou XIII on Oct 16, 2021.”
第二段“Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space.”

Slavery (奴隶制) was one of the darkest periods in American history. It cannot be ignored (忽视). This term, we are reading a novel called The Longest Memory by British author Fred D’Aguiar. Its story is told through the eyes of many different people. From their narration (讲述), we can see what the society looked like during the period before the American Civil War.
The Longest Memory tells the story of a brave and wise young slave, Chapel, who falls in love with the daughter of a plantation owner They decide to go to the north, where black men can marry white women. However, the boy’s father, White Chapel, doesn’t agree with him and causes him to be caught. Chapel is then whipped (鞭打) to death.
Why does White Chapel report his son’s plan to the plantation owner? This is one thing that confuses many readers. But as we understand each character in depth, we can find it out White Chapel teaches young slaves to follow their owners. So his owner respects him a lot. He starts to think that slaves can live comfortably as long as they listen to the plantation owner.
This thought is based on (以……为依据) the idea that slavery will never end. However, Chapel is educated. He sees a more colourful world in the books he reads and wants to be free. He represents (代表) the change for the future, which his dad fears. White Chapel’s thought might be a good way for slaves to protect themselves. But that doesn’t change the fact that slavery is inhumane (不人道的) and must end. Pioneers like Chapel should be encouraged.

The 41-year-old Wang became the first woman astronaut to enter Tiangong space station. Wang’s space dream started in 2003, when China sent its first astronaut Yang Liwei into space.
13. The story of The Longest Memory is based on ________.
A. slavery before the American Civil War B. the American Civil War
C. the First World War D. the American Revolution
14. Chapel and the daughter of a plantation owner decide to go to the north because ________.
A. they want to leave Chapel’s father B. they want to make more money
C. they can get married there D. they want to live with Chapel’s father
15. According to the writer, why does White Chapel report his son?
A. Because he wants to protect his son and the girl.
B. Because he thinks slaves should follow their master’s orders.
C. Because he is worried that his son will be punished by the owner.
D. Because he doesn’t want to be separated from his Son.
16. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. ①②/③④ B. ①②③/④ C. ①/②③④ D. ①②③/④
