(Text 1)
W:Last week Mary got married. I think she must be about thirty now.
M:Well, when I first met her twenty years ago, she was already eight.①
(Text 2)
W:It is such a lovely bright morning. I almost wish I didn't have to work.
M:Well, there is snow to come later tonight, but there will be some heavy rain first in the afternoon. ②
(Text 3)
M:I'm in a hurry to send the letter back!
W:Where are you going, sir?
M:Harvard University, please. Is it far from here?
W:Not far. It's about ten minutes' drive.③
(Text 4)
W:So, how is your German class going?
M:Well, not bad. The pronunciation is fine with me, and its vocabulary is similar to English. But I'm finding the grammar awful.④
W:Well, it takes a while to get it right.
(Text 5)
W:Hey, Richard! What are you doing here?
M:My recorder has something wrong with its speaker,⑤ so I can't practice my spoken English. I want to have it fixed.⑤
W:Does it break down again? You really need a new one.
(Text 6)
M:Oh, the ink is poured on the desk. I'm terribly sorry.⑥
W:Oh, my new book. I bought it just yesterday. I haven't even read it yet.
M:I'm sorry again. Don't worry about the book. I'll get you a new one.
W:And there is ink all over the desk. The class will begin soon. How can I clean it?
M:I have an old pair of gloves in my desk. I'll clean your desk with them.⑦ It's all my fault. I'll take care of everything.
(Text 7)
M:How are you getting on with your studies?
W:Pretty well. We are busy preparing for the college entrance examination.
M:The examination is very important for high school students. Do you think you can pass it?
W:Yes, I think so. It isn't likely to be difficult.⑧
M:I am very glad to hear that. What do you want to be when you leave school?
W:I want to be a teacher.
M:Why?
W:You know that my hometown is not very rich. Many families there can't afford to send their children to school. So I want to do something for them.⑨
M:That sounds great! All the best!
(Text 8)
W:Your new apartment is great!
M:Thanks.
W:Did it take you a long time to find it?
M:No, I just looked online and found a few onebedroom places that met my needs.⑩ Then I spent an afternoon visiting them with a friend.
W:Wow. That sounds pretty easy. I usually look in the newspaper or on the Internet. I can find a lot of information, but it takes a while to sort through all the information.
M:Well, I kept my search simple. I want a nice kitchen, a comfortable bedroom, but the most important thing is having a big living room.⑪
W:Why?
M:I love to have my friends over and cook dinner for them.
W:Really? You should invite me to one of your parties sometime.
M:I'd love to. Are you free this Friday?
W:Of course.⑫
(Text 9)
W:Who's your best friend, Tony?⑯
M:Well, I guess it's David. We've been going to baseball games together for six years.
W:Oh? And how did you meet each other?
M:Well, it was really interesting. You know, David is a police officer.⑬ One day, I was late for a baseball game, and I was in a hurry; he stopped me for speeding. As he was writing me a ticket,⑬ I found that he was a big baseball fan, too, so we arranged to go to a game together the next weekend. I still had to pay for the speeding ticket, though.
W:What's David like?
M:He's really interesting and has a great sense of humour. What about you? Who's your best friend?⑯
W:Oh, Daisy, I think. We met in a bookstore in Italy about four years ago.⑭ She's a really creative person. She writes stories.⑮
M:Oh, I'd like to meet her sometime.
W:Would you? Well, I'm planning to see her next weekend. Maybe you can come with me.
M:Yeah, that sounds great.
(Text 10)
W:Welcome to Freshman Orientation Week. We have some fun activities planned to help you become familiar with the school.⑰ More than anything, we want you to make friends, enjoy yourselves and become part of the high school family.⑰ You've all received a backpack.⑱ Did you notice that the backpacks come in six different colours? That's because you'll be divided into six different groups. Look for the flag that matches the colour of your backpack. We want you to mix with other new students and find new friends. Today, your team will take part in a race to find seven different places on campus, such as the playground and the library. You should find all the places on the list. Make sure you take a picture of yourselves at each place,⑲ and come back here when you're done. The first team to finish will win free gift cards of the school bookstore. Now that you're in your groups, you should choose one person to be your leader and another to be your photographer. And remember that even if you don't finish the whole list, be back here—the school gate—by twelve o'clock.⑳ Now, let's start our race. Ready?

When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admitted I was not a bit happy and excited at all.I thought it would need interactions with others. But later, I was amazed when I got to experience it firsthand.
Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a peer (同龄人) review.I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I preferred to work by myself. But when I got involved, I found in the experience, I had done something that I thought was nearly impossible—it made my poetry better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more details.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poetry to the class.I've always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning, I would have fewer chances to speak.I was wrong. The peer activities we did with a partner gave me more belief in my ability and encouraged me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive and hardworking culture that allows us to push our boundaries (界限) and keep going. It creates a sense of community since we are all working towards a similar goal.
As an active boy, I have always been ahead, but in a normal classroom, there are limitations on what I can do.With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new knowledge when I'm ready.I have ownership of my work and can pursue my goals.
Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself going back to a normal classroom.

In Chinese high schools, clubs are popular among students—they often focus on hobbies like calligraphy (书法), science experiments, or debate, and usually balance activity time with school studies. Many Chinese students join clubs to find out about interests outside textbooks, make friends with similar likes, and learn useful skills.
Similarly, American high schools have many kinds of clubs, and one of the most loved is the Drama Club. It's more than just an extracurricular activity—it's an active group where students can be creative, get confidence, and make good friends. Unlike some clubs that focus on specific (具体的) skills, the Drama Club isn't only about putting on plays; it helps students grow in many ways, so lots of teens love joining it.
Each term, the club presents a big show. Open tryouts welcome everyone—no experience needed. A freshman might do a short speech for a small role, while a senior could land a lead in Romeo and Juliet. Those who prefer not to act build sets make costumes, manage lights, or keep practices on track. Even shy students find their special job, like a secondyear student discovering a love for painting backgrounds.
Practices run 34 afternoons weekly. Students practice lines until they sound natural, fix small problems, and support nervous peers (同龄人). Performance week is exciting: the school hall shines as families arrive with flowers. The audience takes a quick breath at sad moments, laughs at funny lines, and cheers loudly at the end—making all the hard work feel worth doing, with pride lasting for years.
Beyond fun, the club teaches valuable skills: speaking in front of people, managing time, and understanding how others feel when acting as characters. For many American high schoolers, it's more than a club—it's a second family, where they learn to try new things, help others, and discover new sides of themselves.

Students who plan to use AI (人工智能) tools to write their college admission essays should think twice: Essays written by AI sound very similar to each other and lack personal voice, even when details (细节) like race or gender are included.
Researchers from the Cornell University compared 30,000 college application essays written by humans to ones written by eight AI tools. They discovered that AI essays were easy to tell from actual human writing because they used similar sentence patterns and repeated the same kinds of ideas.
“The admission essay is a chance for applicants to offer insights into who they are, beyond all the structured information on the application form,” said Rene Kizilcec, senior author of the new study. “AI tools can help students improve their writing and are likely a good idea for weak writers. But asking for a full article will result in something that just does not sound like any real applicant.”
The researchers explained that AI models cannot easily copy a person's natural writing style. This makes them undependable for important writing tasks like college applications. When AI tools were asked to write from the view of a specific person, such as “an Asian woman from California”, the results sounded even less human. The essays often listed personal details in a flat and predictable way. Surprisingly, the team found that another AI program could easily tell the difference between human and AIwritten essays. This means universities and colleges could likely find out essays written mainly by AI tools.
First author Jinsook Lee advises high school students to use their own ideas to brainstorm and write some simple essays, and, if allowed, use AI only to polish (润色) their essays. Applying to college can be stressful, but Lee remembers her own articlewriting positively. “It was a great chance to look back on my life and my background,” she said. “I think it was the first experience for me to be really thoughtful.”

Dear Jim,
I am glad to hear that you will be a senior high school student. Now, I'd like to share my study tips with you.
First, you'd better communicate with your teachers regularly. In this way they may offer some great advice on both your study and life. Second, involve yourself in each class actively, listen to the teacher attentively and take notes carefully so that you can review later. Third, it's a good idea to do your homework on time soon after school, which will help you practice what you have learned and make it fresh in your mind.
I sincerely hope my advice can be helpful to you and that you can enjoy your new school life.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua

阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It took a day's drive, but distance was beside the point.I always enjoyed long journeys in my father's car with my family. However, things went different that time.We were moving to a new town, not for any tourist destination, but to settle down, for my father had a new job there. My mother, sitting on the passenger seat in the front, was talking with my father. She looked excited for the coming new life. But I was down, feeling nervous about starting a new school life.Entering a new school meant adapting to a completely different environment and meeting new classmates and teachers, which I was not good at.
On my first day at the new school,I felt lost and out of place. The students already knew each other well, and they chatted happily during breaks.I missed my old friends terribly and wished I could go back to my old school.Feeling lonely, I often spent time alone during breaks and after classes, reading books in the library or drawing pictures in the art room.I missed the good days I had with my old friends and longed for that sense of belonging.
As the days went by, I still found it hard to fit in.I was shy and found it difficult to strike up conversations with my classmates. Some of the kids in my class noticed my discomfort and tried to be friendly, but I couldn't shake off the feeling of being an outsider.I only had words with my desk mate, Alex, when necessary.Things took a turn for the worse when I knocked off Alex's water bottle by accident, although I picked up the bottle immediately and apologized to him.He got mad at me and seemed not to forgive me.Soon I found we were avoiding each other.

However, I was assigned to pair up with Alex to design a poster.Reluctantly, we started working together.I was worried that working with Alex would be very difficult because of our previous relationship. But to my surprise, as the work progressed, we found that we shared many common interests. We put a lot of efforts into the drawings and texts, and finally we completed a quite outstanding poster.Alex seemed to forgive me.He appreciated my efforts and began to care about my feelings. The teacher highly praised our work and our classmates were amazed at the picture on the poster.
Alex proudly introduced that the fantastic picture was drawn by me.I smiled shyly but happily as my classmates crowned me and gave me a thumbsup.Slowly but surely, I started feeling more comfortable in my new school.I made new friends, including Alex, and began to participate in activities in and after classes.By the end of the school year, I had fully adapted to the new environment.Moving to a new town was not only challenging, but it also opened up a world of opportunities and new experiences for me.

More than anything, we want you to make friends, enjoy yourselves and become part of the high school family. You've all received a backpack. Did you notice that the backpacks come in six different colors? That's because you'll be divided into six different groups. Look for the flag that matches the color of your backpack. We want you to mix with other new students and fine new friends. Today, your team will take part in a race to find seven different places on campus, such as the playground in the library. You should find all the places on the list, make sure you take a picture of yourselves at each place and come back here when you're done. The first team to finish will win free gift cards of the school bookstore. Now that you're in your groups, you should choose one person to be your leader and another to be your photographer. And remember that even if you don't finish the whole list, be back here, the school gate, by twelve o'clock. Now let's start our race ready. Welcome to freshman orientation week.
