Every other week, more than two dozen boys walk into Lewis C. Cassidy Academics Plus School in West Philadelphia, wearing suits, neckties, and dress shoes. They shake hands with firm grips (紧握) and maintain eye contact while speaking. They are gentlemen carrying themselves with confidence that turns heads.
For many of them, this is their first time to wear a suit. One student puts it plainly, “The first time I ever wore a suit was when I joined the Distinguished Young Gentlemen (DYG). I think I look handsome in it.”
At the heart of all this is Dwayne Eric Frazier, a teacher and retired firefighter. He built the DYG club from scratch, transforming it from an after-school initiative into a registered nonprofit dedicated to impacting lives well beyond the classroom.
Growing up in North Philadelphia, Frazier’s father taught him how to tie a necktie, polish his shoes, and look people in the eye while speaking. Those lessons stuck, following him through military service and through a 26-year career with the Philadelphia Fire Department.
DYG’s roots go back to 1996, when Frazier coached a youth basketball team called the “Distinguished Gentlemen” and used the sport to develop manners among Philadelphia children. The idea stayed with him, and in 2021, with support from a volunteer, he formalized it as an after-school club.
“Emotional intelligence is central,” as Frazier says. “It’s about manners, appearances, self-respect and learning how to think before you speak, not reacting with emotions.” He describes the program’s core values as “respect, responsibility, reading, and resilience (复原力)”.
The dress code (着装规范) matters at DYG, but the curriculum goes much deeper. The club meets weekly after school, with students required to wear suits, neckties, and dress shoes every other week. Frazier models this daily, viewing disciplined dress as a silent statement: “When you dress right, you don’t have to say a word—it speaks for you.”
4. What impression do the boys leave in the first paragraph?
A. They behave decently. B. They are far from professional.
C. They are socially awkward. D. They have rich life experience.
5. What inspired Frazier to run DYG?
A. A youth basketball team. B. His childhood lessons.
C. A volunteer’s suggestion. D. His firefighter training.
6. What is the main focus of DYG according to Frazier?
A. Getting good jobs. B. Becoming famous.
C. Looking good in suits. D. Learning self-control.
7. What can be inferred about Frazier from the last paragraph?
A. He insists on daily uniform wear. B. He thinks dressing well is easy.
C. He leads by example in dress. D. He values discipline as a skill.
C
Water shortages, rising temperatures, and droughts caused by climate change have an immense impact on agriculture — and today’s farmers are desperate to find solutions. In the western United States, some are turning to dry-farming, a form of agriculture that doesn’t require irrigation.
Dry-farmed plants take moisture (水分) stored in the ground, rather than irrigating from above. All farmers need is a wet, rainy season, followed by a dry growing season, as well as some methods like placing a layer of mulch (覆盖物) on top of soil to keep moisture, spacing plants more widely, and planting earlier in the season.
According to the Dry Farming Institute, “Dry-farming is a low-input, place-based approach to producing crops within the constraints of your climate.” As the institute defines it, “A dry-farmed crop is irrigated once or not at all.”
Dry-farming is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but it can save farmers thousands of liters in water every season — and help maintain a climate-resilient business. And the best part? Dry-farmed produce is praised for tasting better than irrigated crops, and crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, squash, corn, watermelon and even grapes, are excellent candidates for dry-farming. In fact, dry-farming is so game-changing for vineyards (葡萄园) that some areas in Europe forbid irrigating wine grapes, in order to sweeten them.
Dry-farming is a long-held standard practice, from olive groves in the Mediterranean (地中海) to melon fields in Botswana. In the US, it dates back thousands of years among indigenous peoples — proving once again that indigenous knowledge is the key to protecting the planet.
“Dry-farming is not just farming — it’s our way of life,” said Michael Kotutwa Johnson, an Indigenous Resiliency specialist at the University of Arizona and member of the Hopi Tribe. “You get to really learn what the environment gives you, and you learn to reward. It’s a beautiful thing, and it’s something that needs to be cherished.”
8. What is a key feature of dry-farming?
A. It uses natural underground wetness.
B. It waters crops often in dry seasons.
C. It has been proved suitable for most crops.
D. It demands thick mulch all the year round.
9. Why do some European areas ban irrigation for wine grapes?
A. To cut the cost of water supply. B. To improve grapes’ pleasant flavor.
C. To popularize local dry-farming. D. To limit excessive grape planting.
10. What can we infer about dry-farming?
A. It is a newly created farming skill. B. It works equally for all farmlands.
C. It costs much more labor and money. D. It carries ancient native eco-wisdom.
11. How does Johnson feel about dry-farming?
A. It requires modern technology. B. It is complex for most farmers.
C. It is a tradition worth preserving. D. It works as a temporary solution.
D
Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters. Scientists have noticed that gap for years among individual species living in certain cities. What no one had tested was whether it held worldwide — across different continents, species, and animal classes.
A new analysis of 80 studies just asked that question, and the answer was more consistent than researchers expected. A team led by Dr Tracy Burkhard, an assistant professor of biology at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, pulled together findings from 80 separate field studies of urban and rural animals. It turns out that the distinction between the old city mouse and country mouse is a global one.
Urban animals came out, on average, more risk positive or more daring than their rural counterparts (对照) in every region the researchers tested. What the team found was a similar global pattern — urbanization changes behavior in similar ways across very different places. Urban animals defended territory more aggressively, investigated new objects more readily, and moved through space more actively than their rural counterparts. The same held true across mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and the limited insect data — wherever populations could be compared at all.
City planners, the researchers pointed out, will have to start treating animal behavior as part of the design problem. Connected green spaces, including parks, planted strips, and wildlife corridors, help urban animals mix with rural ones. That movement maintains gene flow, the genetic exchange that keeps isolated city animals from drifting further from their rural counterparts.
What this study adds is global confirmation that cities appear to be pushing wild behavior in the same direction almost everywhere. How that pressure works — whether through natural selection, individual learning, or which animals survive urban life at all — is still being worked out.
12. What phenomenon does the author describe in paragraph 1?
A. Urban animals are harder to observe.
B. Wild birds avoid humans completely.
C. Pigeons are much friendlier than forest birds.
D. City birds act less cautiously than wild birds.
13. What did Burkhard’s team find about urban animals?
A. Their ability to survive weakens. B. They only change in large cities.
C. They behave alike across regions. D. They are less active than rural ones.
14. What does the underlined word “drifting” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Becoming separate. B. Getting sensitive.
C. Wandering aimlessly. D. Changing direction.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Wild Animals Tend to Escape from Urban Areas
B. City Animals Are Getting Braver Around Humans
C. A Study on Birds’ Different Reactions to Humans
D. Green Spaces Connecting Wildlife in Modern Cities

For many of us, it has been a common experience to lie awake at night wondering or even worrying about the future. We are anxious about our college admission.__16__We wonder about what we will be doing in ten years. It’s natural to feel uncertain about what the future holds for us. But how can we prepare for tomorrow instead of being trapped in anxiety?
As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee that they will become reality.__17__That can be illustrated by comparing the lives of two famous authors, born 40 years apart. Although they shared the same ambitious and energetic approach to life, their careers unfolded in contrasting ways.
Ernest Hemingway fixed his life goal from childhood. Drawing inspiration from wars and adventures, he finished great works like The Old Man and the Sea and won top literary prizes.__18__Starting as a doctor, he wrote detective stories in spare time when waiting for patients. Then he created Sherlock Holmes series unexpectedly.
__19__No matter how detailed your plan is, unexpected changes may turn up. As Steve Jobs put it, you can only connect life’s past experiences backward instead of foreseeing all future opportunities ahead.
So, whatever twists and turns we might encounter, the wisest way to face future involves reasonable planning and flexible adaptation. Make practical short-term plans and keep making progress every day.__20__
A. We worry about our future jobs.
B. Making long-term plans is a reliable way.
C. Most people never worry about unpredictable future.
D. However, life seldom runs as we’ve originally planned.
E. Small daily efforts lay the foundation for unknown future.
F. In this respect, some people are more fortunate than others.
G. In contrast, Arthur Conan Doyle had no fixed early career blueprint.

To date, Liam has__30__over 50 bikes, donating them to kids from low-income families for whom a new one wouldn’t be__31__. “Seeing a kid’s face light up when they get a bike? That’s better than any video game.” he says. What started as a__32__has grown into a small volunteer group; three classmates have__33__his weekend repair sessions.

Bard wiped the kitchen counter, watching his mom shift carefully in her wheelchair. A simple task like reaching a high shelf took effort since her accident. He hated seeing her struggle. “All done,Mom!” he said brightly, hiding his worry.Bard, known as the “Idea Factory”at school, was always sketching (草拟) inventions in his notebook. Lately, one idea consumed him: building something to help Mom.
He noticed challenges that Mom faced everywhere — carrying clothes, vacuuming (用吸尘器打扫) around furniture, cooking while seated. It seemed that Mom needed an extra pair of hands for nearly every daily task. His mind raced with solutions: levers, handles, maybe even a robot. He imagined a small, strong machine doing the heavy lifting Mom couldn’t.
The next six months witnessed a marathon of trial and error. His bedroom became a workshop, filled with motors from old toys, sensors bought with saved lunch money, and messed-up wires. His first prototype (原型机), “Helper V1”, was a shoebox on wheels that got stuck on the carpet. Version 2 knocked over a lamp. Friends joked, calling it “Bard’s BeepBoop Buddy”, but he just smiled broadly and kept working.
Nights were spent working on basic commands: “Pick up cloth”, “Move forward slowly”. He taught Helper to recognize Mom’s voice. Slowly, it worked — fetching a dropped book, carrying a grocery bag. It wasn’t perfect, but it helped.
When the school Science Innovation Fair was announced, Bard knew it was his chance. He polished Helper, wrote clear explanations, and practiced his speech. He called his entry “Helping Hands”.
The day of the fair, students crowded around, amazed as the little robot carefully picked up a small box Bard placed on the floor and delivered it to his hand on command. Teachers nodded approvingly. Bard explained his motivation clearly: “My mom is amazing, but some things are hard. Helper isn’t magic, it's just... extra hands where Mom needs them.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;

根据文章第二段首句“Dry-farmed plants take moisture (水分) stored in the ground, rather than irrigating from above.(旱地耕种的作物利用地里储存的水分,而不是从上方灌溉。)”
根据第四段的“In fact, dry-farming is so game-changing for vineyards (葡萄园) that some areas in Europe forbid irrigating wine grapes, in order to sweeten them.(事实上,旱地耕作对葡萄园造成了巨大改变,以至于欧洲一些地区禁止灌溉酿酒葡萄,为了甜化葡萄。)”
根据第五段的“In the US, it dates back thousands of years among indigenous peoples — proving once again that indigenous knowledge is the key to protecting the planet.(在美国,它可追溯至数千年前的土著民族——再次证明本土知识是保护地球的关键。)”
根据最后一段的“Dry-farming is not just farming — it’s our way of life,” said Michael Kotutwa Johnson, an Indigenous Resiliency specialist at the University of Arizona and member of the Hopi Tribe. “You get to really learn what the environment gives you, and you learn to reward. It’s a beautiful thing, and it’s something that needs to be cherished.(“旱地耕作不仅仅是耕种,更是我们的生活方式,”亚利桑那大学原住民韧性专家、霍皮族成员迈克尔·科图特瓦·约翰逊说,“你能够真正了解环境能给予你什么,并学会如何回报。这是一种美好的事物,需要我们珍视。”)”可推断,约翰逊认为旱地耕作是一件美好的事,是需要珍视的东西,是一种值得保留的传统。
【答案】12.D 13.C 14.A 15.B
根据第一段“Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters.(走到离城市鸽子一米以内,它可能都懒得动。可若是在林间靠近野生鸟类,你能走到十米之内就算幸运了。)”可知,作者描述了城市鸟类比野生鸟类警惕性更低、行为更不谨慎的现象。
13.细节理解题。根据第三段中“What the team found was a similar global pattern — urbanization changes behavior in similar ways across very different places.(团队发现了一个类似的全球模式——城市化在截然不同的地区以相似的方式改变着动物的行为)”可知,Burkhard团队发现城市动物在不同区域表现出相似的行为特征。
根据第四段中“That movement maintains gene flow, the genetic exchange that keeps isolated city animals from drifting further from their rural counterparts.(这种迁移维持了基因流动,即遗传交换,防止孤立的城市动物与野外同类进一步drifting)”可知,基因交流是为了避免城市动物与野外同类在基因上变得不同,drifting在此意为“变得分离、分化”。
综合全文,结合第一段“Walk within a meter of a city pigeon (鸽子) and it might not bother moving. Do the same near a wild bird in a forest and you’ll be lucky to get within ten meters. Scientists have noticed that gap for years among individual species living in certain cities. What no one had tested was whether it held worldwide — across different continents, species, and animal classes.(走到离城市鸽子一米以内,它可能都懒得动。
【答案】16.A 17.F 18.G 19.D 20.E
16.根据空前的“We are anxious about our college admission.(我们为大学录取事宜感到焦虑。)”以及空后的“We wonder about what we will be doing in ten years.(我们想知道十年后自己会做什么。)”
17.根据空前的“As many of us already know, having plans in place for the future is no guarantee that they will become reality.(我们很多人都知道,为未来制定好计划,并不能保证这些计划一定会成为现实。)”以及空后的“That can be illustrated by comparing the lives of two famous authors, born 40 years apart.(这一点可以通过对比两位出生相差40年的著名作家的人生来举例说明。)” F选项“In this respect, some people are more fortunate than others.(在这一方面,一些人会比其他人更加幸运)”中的in this respect指代前文计划不一定实现这件事,顺利引出下文两个人生轨迹不同的作家对比案例,起到承上启下的作用。
18.根据空前的“Ernest Hemingway fixed his life goal from childhood. Drawing inspiration from wars and adventures, he finished great works like The Old Man and the Sea and won top literary prizes.(欧内斯特·海明威从小就确定了人生目标,从战争和冒险中获取灵感,完成了《老人与海》等伟大作品,斩获顶级文学奖项。)”以及空后的“Starting as a doctor, he wrote detective stories in spare time when waiting for patients. Then he created Sherlock Holmes series unexpectedly.(他一开始是一名医生,在等候病人的空闲时间创作侦探小说,之后意外创作出了福尔摩斯系列。)” G选项“In contrast, Arthur Conan Doyle had no fixed early career blueprint.(与之相反,阿瑟·柯南·道尔早年没有固定的职业规划)”中的in contrast表示对比转折,引出第二位人物,衔接前后两个人物事例,逻辑通顺。
19.根据空后的“No matter how detailed your plan is, unexpected changes may turn up.(无论你的计划多么详尽,意外的变故都有可能出现。)”以及后文“As Steve Jobs put it, you can only connect life’s past experiences backward instead of foreseeing all future opportunities ahead.(正如史蒂夫·乔布斯所说,你只能把过去的生活经历向后联系起来,而不能预见未来的所有机会。)”
20.根据空前的“Make practical short-term plans and keep making progress every day.(制定切实可行的短期计划,并且每天坚持取得进步。)”

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
Bard and the other contestants were all anxiously waiting for the results.

Bard and the other contestants were all anxiously waiting for the results. The host slowly announced the winners one by one. Bard held his breath tightly, staring at the stage nervously. When the host announced that the first prize went to his work “Helping Hands”, his heart burst with excitement. He walked onto the stage, received the medal and shared his wish to upgrade the robot to help more disabled people.
Bard rushed home excitedly. As soon as he opened the door, he showed the shiny medal to his mom and told her every exciting detail of the fair. Mom stroked the robot Helper with tears of joy, saying she was extremely proud of his kindness and persistence. That night, Helper fetched cups and clothes for Mom smoothly. Bard realized love and creativity could always bring great warmth and convenience to the people he loved.

Is Space Exploration Worthwhile?
In my opinion, space exploration is absolutely worthwhile.
Firstly, it helps humans better understand the mysterious universe and explore potential new resources, which can effectively support humanity’s sustainable long-term development. Secondly, space exploration greatly drives scientific and technological innovation. A large number of practical technologies widely used in our daily lives were originally developed for space missions. Moreover, it stimulates public interest in science, encourages young people to pursue scientific dreams and broadens human vision greatly.
Therefore, despite the high cost, space exploration is a valuable investment for mankind’s future.
