The Taste of Love and Culture
Food is more than something we eat; it is a mirror of culture and history, and every country has its own special cuisine. In China, people believe that food is closely connected with health, and the choice of every ingredient matters a great deal. For example, prior to cooking a famous dish, a chef must prepare fresh vegetables such as onion, cabbage, garlic and pepper, and he may add a little vinegar or a few peppercorns to make the taste bold and rich. The recipe of a family may consist of simple steps, but a good meal should consist of love and patience. Some people like to stuff the meat with herbs, while others prefer to slice the meat and slice ... off small pieces for the soup. In Xinjiang, people enjoy lamb and lamb kebab on the grassland, and in the south, dim sum and red braised pork are famous dishes that show the elegant side of Chinese cooking.
Everyone has his own taste, but a healthy diet should always be the ideal. Some people love dessert and eat too much dough, bun and bacon, while others like ham, sausage and pork. A vegetarian will not touch any meat, and a person who loves junk may often eat junk food instead of real meals. However, too much chilli, olive oil or sweet food can do harm to our health, and we should be modest in our eating habits. The minimum amount of vitamin and fibre is necessary for our body, and the quantity of food should be controlled. A balanced meal with a little dairy, a piece of bean curd and a bowl of rice is better than a big dinner full of calories. We should chew our food slowly and eat in moderation, because this is the fundamental rule of good health. A stable and consistent habit of eating on time is also very important.
When I was in the UK, I tried some special food. I had a famous dish called haggis, which is made from sheep's stomach, and I also tasted a sweet dish with figs and a drink made from pearl barley. In the school canteen, the students could choose food from the cafeteria, and the prices were marked by category. I was surprised to learn that food has a strong association with local culture, and that people may eat the same dish in quite different ways. My host mother, a kind old madam, told me that a good cook should know every trick of cooking and always try new ideas, regardless of how difficult they are. Regardless of the weather, she would go to the market every morning to buy fresh food, and her kitchen was always full of warm smells. Her cooking was truly exceptional, and the overall impression of my stay was full of happiness. Somewhat to my surprise, I even began to learn how to cook, and I found that even a simple dish needs great care. The taste of a meal is like the taste of life itself: it is somewhat different for every person, and we should never be too proud to learn from others. Prior to buying any food, we should pay attention to its brand, because a good brand often means better quality. We should not consume too much sugar or salt, and we should control our temper when we meet a rude waiter in the restaurant. Prior to making a big dinner, it is wise to plan the menu carefully.

When I was twelve years old, my family moved to a small town in the south of China, where I first discovered the true magic of food. My grandmother was an excellent cook, and her kitchen was always full of warm smells and happy laughter. She believed that every dish should be prepared with love, and that the most important thing was not the expensive materials but the heart of the cook. Every morning, she would go to the market to choose fresh vegetables, and she always told me that a good meal could bring the whole family together. Her cooking opened my eyes to the wonderful world of Chinese cuisine, and I began to understand that food was much more than something to fill our stomachs.
My grandmother often cooked a simple but delicious dish with onion, cabbage and garlic. She would slice the meat into thin pieces and stir-fry them with a little vinegar and a few peppercorns to make the taste bold and rich. She also taught me the family recipe for dumplings, which was passed down from her grandmother. The secret, she said, was to make the dough soft and smooth, and to put the filling in the middle with great care. We would make the dumplings together on Sunday afternoons, and she would tell me stories about her own childhood while we worked. Those warm moments taught me that cooking was not just a skill but a way of showing love to the people around us.
One day, my grandmother took me to a famous restaurant in the city, where a great chef cooked a special meal for us. The chef used many different ingredients and prepared every dish with amazing skill. He told us that a good cook should know every trick of cooking and should always be ready to try new ideas, regardless of how difficult they were. He also said that people should eat in moderation and never waste food, because every grain of rice was the fruit of hard work. I was deeply impressed by his words, and I began to understand that the fundamental rule of cooking was to respect both the food and the people who prepared it.
Now, years later, I still remember the taste of my grandmother's cooking, and I have learned to make many of her dishes myself. I know that a healthy diet should be balanced and should contain enough vitamins and fibre, and that we should control the quantity of the food we eat. I have also learned that the food of a country is closely connected with its culture and history, and that every dish has its own story. When I cook for my own family now, I always think of my grandmother, and I try to pass on her love and her wisdom. I believe that the true value of food lies not in its price but in the happiness it brings to the people we love, and that a warm meal can make a cold day feel like home.
