As a part of school education, labour education (劳动教育) plays an important role in our lives. Here are some discussions about labour education in different countries.
Our labour education starts at an early age. At the beginning of Grade 7, we have labour classes. As a middle school student, now I can cook dishes for my family by myself. I have a strong feeling of achievement (成就).

We don’t have labour lessons. Instead, we do volunteer work after school. We organize the books in the library or clean up the city parks. By doing them, we learn the importance of teamwork and feel the happiness of labour.
—Loo Lin, Singapore
We have four kinds of labour classes. Teachers give us lessons in different classrooms. We can learn useful skills in a real environment. When we are working, we develop our skills and habits of labour.

Did you ever do any special or interesting homework? What was it and how did you like it?
Wei Ming, 14
I had special homework yesterday. After school, I went into the kitchen to cook noodles for my parents. I guessed it would be terrible to eat because it was my first time to cook. To my surprise, my parents ate them up quickly. “Really delicious!” they said. I tried some and they were really bad. Just then I understood what family love really is.
Li Yu, 13
Can you wash your clothes? My teacher asked us to help parents to wash clothes at home. I put the dirty clothes into the washing machine. At first, I didn’t know what to do. Minutes later, I started the machine. When it stopped, I took out the clean clothes and hung them outside to dry. I was happy I could do something to help my parents.

Many children ask their mothers for help when they meet challenges, and Anna is no exception. She often turns to her mom and says, “Could you help me?” However, her mom’s answer is always the same: “Do it yourself, dear.” This makes Anna feel upset, and she even thinks of her mom as a lazy person.
For example, one day, Anna invited some friends over, but her bedroom was in a mess. Books were all over the table and floor, and she had forgotten to make her bed. She asked her mother for help to tidy up, but her mom replied seriously, “Do it yourself, girl.” Anna had to clean the room on her own. Luckily, when her friends arrived, her bedroom was clean enough.
Because of her mother’s “laziness”, Anna has to wash her own clothes, keep her room tidy, and even help with household chores. When she has a toothache, she even has to go to the dentist by herself. She does all these things reluctantly, with a voice in her heart saying, “What a cold and lazy mom I have!”
As Anna grows up, she begins to understand her mother. Her mom’s so-called laziness is actually a way to build her independence. It was really hard for Anna to do everything on her own at first, but she has learned a lot. Through those early difficult times, she has learned the importance of relying on herself and gained important life skills. Now, Anna is thankful for the lesson her mother taught her—these skills have shaped her into a stronger and more hard-working person.

Rita was in a shopping mall, looking for a gift for her little daughter. Suddenly she stopped before a store, inside which were all kinds of dolls.
“Why not buy a lovely doll? Girls like dolls,” she thought as she stepped into the store.
Looking around, she saw a grandma doll—one with gray hair and a pair of glasses. As she gazed at it, in her mind somehow appeared Linda, her mother.
When Rita was a little girl, she got her first doll from Linda for her birthday. She was very happy. Then the second, the third…Rita began to feel puzzled. When she asked her mum the reason, the answer was always “A girl can never have enough dolls.” Year after year, Rita grew up and Linda aged, but a doll a year from Linda never arrived late.
“But why always a doll?” This question had been in Rita’s mind until one day her father gave the answer.
Little Linda dreamed of having a doll. Her parents promised one for her fifth birthday. Sadly, they both died in a traffic accident before it arrived. The never-received gift was the most precious in her eyes. That’s why she thought dolls were the best birthday gifts for Rita.

Love,

One evening last summer, when I asked my 14-year-old son, Jack, to help with dinner, his question shocked me. “What is a colander (漏勺)? ” he asked.
Nobody else could cook for the family except my own! But that night, as I explained that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I knew what else I should teach Jack. As a mother, while I cared about my son’s grades and characters, I always forgot that I should also raise someone’s future roommate, boyfriend, husband, or father. I just raised a boy who would always ask his mother, “What’s for dinner? ” So I came up with a plan—I would open a housework course for Jack. I was glad to find that he didn’t say no.
For two hours, three days a week, Jack was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (馅饼皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven. I knew that he would like to play basketball, but he had to mend socks with his mother—he tried to stop the sewing lessons, but I refused him.
“I appreciate what you do as a mum,” he told me one day.

When you are a teenager, it seems that every time you say, “I want to...”, your parents answer, “No, you can’t.” Teenagers often think they should be allowed to make their own decisions, 1 .
Li Hai, a 15yearold boy from Huarong, is a middle school student. He is often late for school because he stays up too late. 2 Unless he arrives at school on time, he will be punished by his teacher. Also, Li Hai thinks that he should be allowed to watch TV and play computer games as much as he wants. If his parents refuse his requirements (要求), 3 “Maybe my son thinks the family rules are too strict or unfair,” says Mrs Li.
“But we think we’re doing the right thing. 4 We expect him to get into a good university.” Li Hai is always asking, “Could you make the bed for me?” or “Could you help me sweep the floor?” 5 His parents insist on doing chores with him every weekend. Gradually he realizes the importance of doing housework. Sometimes he helps his mother with housework.
These days, Li Hai knows his parents care about him and he must follow these strict family rules. Only then will he have a chance to become a better teenager.
A.Li Hai needs to spend more time on his studies.
B.His parents always ask him to go to bed early and have enough sleep.
C.He thinks doing housework is a waste of time.
D.Li Hai feels lonely and nervous at home.
E.he will argue with his father or mother.
F.but their parents may worry about children’s development.
Home is the warmest place for every teenager, but many students don’t know how to make their home full of love. Here are three easy and practical suggestions.
6 Learn to use polite sentences when you need help or want permission. Many teenagers shout orders to their family members without thinking. If you want to use your father’s computer, don’t say “Give me your computer”. Try “Could I use your computer for thirty minutes to finish my report?” 7 Soft polite words will make your family happy to give you a hand.
Second, take the initiative to share housework without being reminded.
You don’t have to finish all hard chores every day. Small acts matter a lot. After dinner, you can offer to wash dishes. When you see rubbish on the floor, sweep it up. If the balcony plants look dry, water them in your free time. 8 When parents see you are willing to share their tiredness, they will feel your deep love.
Third, spend more slow quiet time with your family on weekends.
Nowadays, most teenagers lock themselves in bedrooms to play mobile games all weekend. They hardly talk with parents. Instead, you can invite your family to clean the flat together, hang up old family photos or cook simple snacks side by side. 9 These simple activities build closer family ties and leave sweet memories.
All in all, home warmth does not come from expensive things. It comes from polite talk, shared labor and company. 10 Start with small changes today, and your house will turn into a much sweeter home.
A.You can also ask politely if you need to borrow your brother’s stationery.
B.First, master polite expressions for requests and permission.
C.You can also pack up your own toys and books before going out.
D.You will never feel lonely if you travel to different cities alone.
E.Small warm acts are enough to make a big difference to your family.
F.Communication and care are the most valuable treasure of every home.
