A
You can air fry almost anything. But, there are foods that just shouldn’t be seen near an air fryer. Before cooking with your air fryer, see which foods won’t work — even though they may be tempting to throw in there.
Fresh greens
Leafy greens, like spinach, will cook unevenly and are very likely to burn due to the air fryer’s high-speed air. When choosing vegetables to cook in the air fryer, make sure they hold some weight, like broccoli or zucchini. Kale chips may also be successful if coated in enough oil to weigh them down.
Whole roasts
The apparent issue with whole roasts is whether or not it will even fit properly into an air fryer basket, but even if it does fit, it’s best to just stick to the regular oven. The roast will not cook evenly, with the part closest to the heat source likely to burn by the time the part furthest away is safe to eat. The problem comes down to overcrowding.
Cheese
Who wouldn’t love to instantly make some fried cheese to snack on? Since the air fryer isn’t truly “frying” the food, placing cheese in it without some sort of coating will just melt the cheese into a puddle and create a mess you don’t want to clean up.
Battered foods
Unless the food is pre-fried and frozen, you’ll want to avoid placing wet batter in the air fryer. Aside from the obvious mess it will create, wet batter won’t set the way it does when it’s submerged in oil, meaning the food won’t have that crunchy shell.
21.Why is it not recommended to cook fresh leafy greens like spinach in an air fryer?
A.They don’t hold enough weight.
B.They cook unevenly and burn easily.
C.They aren’t coated in oil to weigh them down.
D.They require much preparation time to be successful.
22.What is the main problem with cooking whole roasts in an air fryer?
A.The size of them makes them hard to fit.
B.The skin of them usually becomes too dry.
C.No proper circulation of hot air causes uneven cooking.
D.It takes much longer to cook them than in a regular oven.
23.What do cheese and battered foods have in common when using an air fryer?
A.They must be coated for preparation.
B.They should be frozen before cooking.
C.They can be cooked directly without issues.
D.They’ll cause problems without proper handling.

Recently, Earth grabbed itself a second moon in the form of a newly discovered asteroid (小行星) named 2024 PT5. Unlike the moon, Earth’s primary companion which has accompanied our planet for around 4.5 billion years, this “new mini-moon” will stick around for just two months before it heads back to its home in an asteroid belt following our planet and orbiting the sun.
A team of scientists spotted 2024 PT5 as they routinely monitored newly discovered objects around Earth. “The asteroid paying us a visit belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt, a secondary asteroid belt made of space rocks that follow the orbit very similar to that of Earth at an average distance to the sun of about 150 million kilometers,” said research lead author Carlos de la Fuente Marcos.
Marcos explained that some of these asteroids in the Arjuna asteroid belt can approach Earth at a close range of around 4.5 million kilometers and at low speeds of around 3,540 kilometers per hour. “Under these conditions, one of these asteroids may be captured by Earth’s gravity and become a temporary moon of Earth. The asteroid 2024 PT5 will undergo this process for about two months,” Marcos added. “It will not follow a full orbit around Earth.”
Mini-moon events come in two flavors. The first is about long episodes during which the asteroid completes one or more revolutions about our planet, with these gravitational engagements (引力作用) lasting one or more years. The second type of episodes is short engagements in which the small body does not complete one full revolution. These temporary captures can last just days, weeks or even a few months. Short mini-moon events are relatively frequent, with several events happening per decade. Long mini-moon events, on the other hand, are rare with Earth experiencing one around every ten or twenty years.
Unfortunately, during its occupation around Earth, 2024 PT5 won’t be visible to the vast majority of sky watchers. “The asteroid is too small and dark for typical amateur telescopes. However, it is well within the brightness range of typical telescopes by professional astronomers,” Marcos said.
24.How long will the asteroid 2024 PT5 stay near Earth?
A.Over a decade. B.About two months.
C.Less than a week. D.Around 4.5 billion years.
25.What makes 2024 PT5 a “mini moon” rather than a true moon?
A.It lacks a stable orbit around Earth. B.It is smaller than other asteroids.
C.It moves faster than Earth’s moon. D.It reflects too little light to be seen.
26.What writing technique is used to explain mini-moon events?
A.Definition. B.Classification. C.Comparison. D.Illustration.
27.What can we infer from Marcos’ words from the last paragraph?
A.The asteroid 2024 PT5 is unusually bright.
B.Sky watchers should purchase advanced telescopes.
C.Professional knowledge is needed for asteroid observation.
D.Amateur telescopes are not powerful to observe 2024 PT5.

When you try to recall something, do you automatically reach for your phone and look it up? You may have experienced the Google effect, often called “digital amnesia (健忘症).”
American psychologists began discussing this phenomenon in the early 2010s. In their study, participants were asked to read and type 40 interesting facts. Half of the participants were told these sentences would be saved on the computer, while the other half were told they would be deleted. Everyone was then asked to write down as many facts as possible from memory. It turned out that people who thought the information would be saved remembered less than those who believed it would be lost.
One of the main reasons we experience digital amnesia is the spread of technology and instant access to vast amounts of information. Neuroscientists note that the strength of memory is directly linked to how often we recall: the more often you recall a piece of information, the better it is kept up. However, the rise of search engines and quick access to knowledge have made turning to our own memories less necessary.
The worse we concentrate on information, the harder it becomes to remember it. The flow of information never stops, and attention has become the most easily lost abilities in modern humans. The good news is that it can be trained.
You can start with something simple. Remove distractions (分心的事): turn off notifications (提醒) and put your phone away. Physical exercise helps, too. The better your heart and lungs work, the more easily your brain can stay focused.
The Internet is not the enemy of memory, but a powerful tool, if we use it wisely. The strength of the human mind does not lie in the amount of data we memorize. True intelligence lies in the ability to ask questions, understand connections, doubt, seek evidence, and create something new. Let search engines answer your questions, and let you learn to see meaning behind the facts.
28.What does the study of American psychologists suggest?
A.Saved facts are easy to recall. B.Written words are hard to forget.
C.Technology weakens memory. D.Typing promotes memorization.
29.What is one of the main reasons for the Google effect?
A.Worsened brain function. B.Limited learning resources.
C.Insufficient time for recitation. D.Ready availability of information.
30.Which of the following can help prevent the Google effect according to paragraph 5?
A.Doing some workouts. B.Prohibiting the use of smart phones.
C.Stopping the spread of information. D.Practising memorizing information.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Search engines create innovative ideas.
B.Memorizing knowledge is the key to wisdom.
C.The Internet is a trustworthy friend of humans.
D.Human intelligence is reflected in deep thinking.

Energy efficiency improvements, such as the widespread adoption of LED lighting, are widely promoted by policymakers as a primary strategy for reducing carbon emissions. However, a growing body of research indicates that a phenomenon known as the “rebound effect” could significantly weaken these efforts, potentially wiping out more than half of the expected energy savings and making global climate targets much harder to achieve.
A research team led by Paul Brockway at the University of Leeds, UK, conducted a comprehensive review of existing literature on this topic. They analyzed 33 previous studies that modeled the impact of efficiency improvements. The team identified two main mechanisms: the direct rebound effect and the indirect rebound effect. The direct effect occurs when a consumer responds to increased efficiency by using more of the service — for example, driving further because a fuel-efficient car lowers the cost per mile. The indirect effect happens when money saved on energy is spent on other goods and services, which in turn require energy to produce and deliver.
Despite the varied methodologies used in the original 33 studies, the results were remarkably consistent. The team concluded that, on average, the rebound effect negates approximately 63 percent of the anticipated energy savings.
“We are not arguing that energy efficiency is ineffective,” clarifies Brockway. “Rather, the rebound effect needs to be taken more seriously in policy planning.”
This concept echoes the Jevons paradox (悖论), named after economist William Stanley Jevons. In 1865, Jevons observed that technological improvements in coal efficiency led not to a reduction in coal consumption, but to an increase in overall demand as it became more economically affordable.
If the rebound effect proves as substantial as this analysis suggests, future global energy demand will be higher than expected. This implies that the world will require far more renewable energy infrastructure and carbon-capture technology than currently planned.
However, it doesn’t mean nothing can be done to limit the rebound effect. One potential solution is to intensify efforts: doubling down on energy efficiency to achieve the same net reduction in energy use.
32.Which best illustrates the indirect rebound effect?
A.A driver buys a hybrid car and commutes longer distances.
B.A company uses efficient machines to cut operational costs.
C.A student saves on electricity and takes a cross-country flight.
D.A family installs solar panels and sells extra power to the grid.
33.How did Paul Brockway’s team carry out their research?
A.By interviewing economists. B.By analyzing former studies.
C.By modeling the rebound effect. D.By debating about the Jevons paradox.
34.What would Paul Brockway probably agree with?
A.Authorities should dismiss energy efficiency.
B.Worldwide efforts to preserve energy are in vain.
C.The rebound effect helps protect the environment.
D.More attention should be paid to the rebound effect.
35.What’s the author’s attitude towards limiting the rebound effect?
A.Positive. B.Pessimistic. C.Doubtful. D.Disapproving.

The Consequences of Having No Consequences
As a youth football coach, I have watched players develop in real time through both successes and failures. Yet one season stands out. During that season, a talented group faced no punishments for missed practices or low effort. As a result, attendance dropped and performance declined. When the season ended with early losses, the players expressed shock and blame. 36
In my coaching, I apply natural consequences. Players who skip physical training sit out the next session. No exceptions. No second chances. The result has been obvious. 37 Young athletes learn that preparation determines performance.
38 When schools remove failing grades or reduce homework standards, students lose the link between effort and outcome. But consequences make it clear that effort produces results. A missed deadline receives a zero. An incomplete assignment requires revision during personal time. Students learn time management and responsibility as these habits transfer to professional life.
Actually, consequences are not punishments and they are teachers revealing the connection between choices and results. They prepare people for real life. Parents who allow natural outcomes raise responsible adults. 39 Coaches who apply consequences develop tough athletes.
Therefore, allow consequences to do their work. The result is that individuals will possess internal strength. That strength benefits families, workplaces, and communities. 40 The path forward requires courage from adults to step back and let consequences teach. The payoff is well worth it.
A.Classrooms follow the same principle.
B.Attendance improves and effort increases.
C.The absence of consequences extends into adulthood.
D.It creates a society grounded in personal responsibility.
E.They had never learned that actions carry consequences.
F.Educators who enforce standards prepare capable graduates.
G.Consequences are most effective when introduced gradually.

Luzhuang Village in Liaocheng City of Shandong Province is known for its abundant production of bottle gourds (葫芦), a type of gourd that is either eaten while young 56 left to dry and made into ornaments, utensils or musical instruments.
In October 2018, Hao Xuekun, the then 19-year-old college student, uploaded a short video 57 (document) the village’s gourd fair online. The clip showed row upon row of gourd shops, featuring varieties of distinctive gourd types on display. That single video led to more than a dozen online sales, 58 gave Hao a real sense of the market demand for the gourd.
The Chinese name for gourd, pronounced as hulu, 59 (sound) similar to “good fortune and prosperity,” making the good-looking vegetable 60 traditional favorite among Chinese consumers.
Last year, when I was in the 11th grade, my friend Rameesa and I were chosen to make a presentation at a school fair. The day before the event, we were asked to make some last-minute changes, which took a few extra after-school hours to complete. With home at least 30 kilometres away by bus, I called my parents from a teacher’s phone to let them know I’d be later than usual.
After saying goodbye to Rameesa, I boarded a direct bus to my neighbourhood and settled into a window seat for the long ride back. The bus was crowded with tired office workers and students like me, and the evening light outside was slowly fading.
At some point, lulled (使安静) by the steady movement of the bus, I fell asleep. When I finally woke up and looked around, my heart skipped a beat — I found myself in an unfamiliar area. The street names meant nothing to me, and nothing looked familiar. It was 7: 00 p.m. and getting dark fast. I had clearly missed my stop by a long distance. In a panic, I rushed out at the next stop, holding my schoolbag tightly, unsure of what to do next.
The place where I got off was nearly empty, except for a few construction workers walking around in the distance. There was a slum (贫民窟) not far away, with small shacks (棚屋) crowded together, but no shops or public phones where I could call home. The streetlights were weak and far apart, casting long, uncertain shadows on the ground.
As I stood there trying to figure out a way out of my difficult situation, I suddenly had the feeling that I was being watched. A chill ran down my back. I looked around and saw a woman holding a child in her arms, staring at me from the edge of the slum. Her appearance — short, thin and with untidy hair, her sari (纱丽) dirty and torn — did nothing to make me feel safe. Wild thoughts flooded my mind, and I convinced myself that someone who looked like her could only be dangerous. My mind told my body to run, but I couldn’t move.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph one:
The next moment I saw the woman slowly walking towards me.

Paragraph two:
I grabbed the phone with shaking hands and called my father to come pick me up.

根据Fresh greens标题下“Leafy greens, like spinach, will cook unevenly and are very likely to burn due to the air fryer’s high-speed air.(像菠菜这样的绿叶蔬菜,由于空气炸锅的高速空气,会烹饪不均匀,而且很容易烧焦)”可知,不建议在空气炸锅里烹饪新鲜绿叶蔬菜如菠菜是因为它们烹饪不均匀且容易烧焦。故选B。
根据Whole roasts标题下“The roast will not cook evenly, with the part closest to the heat source likely to burn by the time the part furthest away is safe to eat. The problem comes down to overcrowding.(烤肉会烹饪不均匀,当离热源最远的部分可以安全食用时,离热源最近的部分很可能已经烧焦了。问题在于过于拥挤)”可知,用空气炸锅烹饪整块烤肉的主要问题是热空气循环不畅导致烹饪不均匀。故选C。
23.细节理解题。根据Cheese标题下“placing cheese in it without some sort of coating will just melt the cheese into a puddle and create a mess you don’t want to clean up.(把奶酪放进去,如果没有某种涂层,奶酪就会融化成一滩,弄得一团糟,你不想清理)”和Battered foods标题下“Aside from the obvious mess it will create, wet batter won’t set the way it does when it’s submerged in oil(除了会造成明显的混乱外,湿面糊不会像浸在油里那样凝固)”可知,奶酪和面糊类食物在使用空气炸锅时的共同点是,如果处理不当会产生问题。故选D。
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.B 27.D
根据第一段“Unlike the moon, Earth’s primary companion which has accompanied our planet for around 4.5 billion years, this “new mini-moon” will stick around for just two months before it heads back to its home in an asteroid belt following our planet and orbiting the sun. (月球是地球的主要伴星,已经陪伴地球大约45亿年了。与月球不同的是,这颗“新的迷你卫星”将在地球上停留两个月,然后就会回到它位于小行星带的家,它跟着地球绕太阳运行。)”可知,2024 PT5小行星将在地球附近停留大约两个月。故选B。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“The asteroid 2024 PT5 will undergo this process for about two months,” Marcos added. “It will not follow a full orbit around Earth.” 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Mini-moon events come in two flavors.
根据最后一段“The asteroid is too small and dark for typical amateur telescopes. However, it is well within the brightness range of typical telescopes by professional astronomers (对于典型的业余望远镜来说,这颗小行星太小、太暗了。然而,它完全在专业天文学家使用的典型望远镜的亮度范围内)”可知,业余望远镜不够强大,无法观测2024 PT5。故选D。

【详解】32.推理判断题。根据第二段“The indirect effect happens when money saved on energy is spent on other goods and services, which in turn require energy to produce and deliver.(间接效应是指节省下来的能源开支被用于购买其他商品与服务,而这些商品的生产和运输过程又会消耗能源。)”
根据第二段“A research team led by Paul Brockway at the University of Leeds, UK, conducted a comprehensive review of existing literature on this topic. They analyzed 33 previous studies that modeled the impact of efficiency improvements.(英国利兹大学保罗・布罗克韦尔带领的研究团队,对该课题已有的文献进行了全面梳理。他们分析了33项过往研究,这些研究都对能效提升带来的影响建立了模型。)”可知,保罗・布罗克韦尔的团队是通过分析以往的研究来开展这项研究的。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段“Rather, the rebound effect needs to be taken more seriously in policy planning.(相反,在政策规划中,人们需要更加重视回弹效应。)”
根据最后一段“However, it doesn’t mean nothing can be done to limit the rebound effect. One potential solution is to intensify efforts: doubling down on energy efficiency to achieve the same net reduction in energy use.(然而,这并不意味着我们无法采取措施来抑制回弹效应。

The Chinese name for gourd为单数,谓语动词要用第三人称单数形式sounds。

The next moment I saw the woman slowly walking towards me. My heart was pounding wildly, and I clutched my schoolbag even tighter, ready to scream for help. But to my surprise, she stopped a few steps away and spoke in a soft, gentle voice. “You look lost, little girl,” she said, shifting the sleeping child in her arms. “I noticed you got off the bus looking confused.” She then pulled out an old mobile phone from her pocket and held it out to me. “You can use this to call your family. It’s not safe for a young girl to be out here alone after dark.”
I grabbed the phone with shaking hands and called my father to come pick me up. After hanging up, I stood there awkwardly. The woman didn’t seem to notice my embarrassment, chatting softly about her child to help me relax. When my father arrived, he thanked her repeatedly and offered her money, but she politely refused. As we drove away, I looked back at her small figure standing by the road, and I realized that true kindness has nothing to do with appearance or wealth. That night, I learned never to judge a book by its cover.
