In the end, she chose the second path, because she believed that helping others was the greatest virtue in life, and her strong moral sense guided every step she took. Her parents were worried and began to complain about her decision, but she never gave up. She worked hard, won a scholarship, and used her savings to pay the tuition fees at a medical school. Her teachers respected her strong principle, and her mother once entrusted her with an important task, which she finished so well that everyone praised her. She often said that a doctor should be honest and willing to listen to every patient, and she tried to illustrate this idea with her own actions every day. Some hospitals rejected her application at first, and the rejection made her sad, but she never stopped trying. She later published two articles about village medicine, and she bought insurance for her small clinic. She never charged the poor patients a single fee, and after a whole day of work she often felt faint from hunger, but she would just whisper to herself that every patient was like her own family. After she graduated, Dr Zhang was appointed to work in a faraway town in the mountains, and the local people elected her as the head of the small clinic. She hired a young physician as her assistant, and together they served as the resident physicians of the whole area. Her colleagues respected her deeply, and the staff of the clinic all followed her example. The government later elected her as the chairman of the local medical union, and she worked with great energy every day. She never complained about the low income, and she believed that a passive attitude could never help the patients. She replaced the old equipment with new machines, opened a small kindergarten for the children of the nurses, and spent a great deal of money on the poor. The majority of the patients were poor farmers, so she responded to every call at any time, even at midnight, and her quick response saved many lives. She tended to the sick with great patience, and she tended to work late into the night without any rest. Her election as chairman made the whole town proud, and she often travelled elsewhere to learn new skills. She bought medicine imported from other cities and exported the town's famous herbs to distant places. A long chain of small gifts from her patients hung on the wall, and she stood firm like a pole in the wind. In the evening she would sit with a book on her lap and read letters from her patients, and her great might came from the love of the people. One night, a serious car accident happened near the town, and a pregnant woman was badly hurt. Dr Zhang ran to the scene at once and began the operation with the help of her assistant. The woman's husband was in despair and his hands were shaking, but the doctor told him to stay calm and wait quietly. Sometimes Dr Zhang would disguise herself in old clothes and push a small cart to visit the patients quietly, and she never showed a scared face in front of anyone. The operation was long and difficult, but finally both the mother and the baby were safe, and the husband thanked her with tears of joy. Dr Zhang taught the villagers how to give first aid to the injured, and she showed them how to stop the bleeding from a bite or a cut on the lip. She told them never to spill any medicine, and when a patient tripped over a stone on the road, she helped him to limp back home with great care. The old man was in tears and wanted to pay her, but she said that helping others could never do any harm to her. She often told the young doctors that a medical worker should never be scared of hard work, and that a sharp mind and a kind heart were the two most precious gifts for a doctor. She believed that doctors should be flexible in their treatment and never refuse to assist anyone who needed help. After she retired, Dr Zhang did not stop helping people. She gave free lectures to young doctors, and the government built a small museum in memory of her great work. She passed away ten years ago, but her spirit still lives on in the hearts of the local people. The hospital has a small cafe where the waitresses often talk about her kindness, and a big maple tree in the courtyard was planted by her own hands. Her life was like a fable that teaches us the meaning of love and duty, and her memory will never fade. She often told us that we should face the tension of life with a calm heart, and therefore we should never lose hope. She compared life to a court where every act was judged by our own conscience, and she reminded us that a small kindness could mean a great deal to others. Every year on her birthday, the villagers would buy a small gift, spending only one yuan per person, and she would smile and say that their love was the best present in the world. For more than a decade, young doctors from every province came to learn from her, and she tended to give them free lessons without asking for anything. Even in her last years, she remembered the poor students who could not pay their tuition, and she quietly helped them one by one. When she faced any dilemma in life, she always chose the path of kindness, and when she passed away, her only wish was that her students would keep serving the people. Her spirit still encourages us to be kind, brave and helpful, and her story will be told from generation to generation. 美德 → __________ 2. 困境 → __________ 3. 宝贵的 → __________ 4. 婚姻 → __________ 5. 抱怨 → __________ 6. 回应 → __________ 7. 奖学金 → __________ 8. 雇用 → __________ 9. 拒绝 → __________ 10. When she was young, she faced a difficult dilemma: she could either marry a rich man and live an easy life in the city, or study medicine and return to her hometown to help the sick. Many of her friends chose the first path, but Dr Wang chose the second without any hesitation. She believed that the greatest virtue of a doctor was not making money, but saving lives and easing the pain of others. Her parents were worried about her decision, yet they finally supported her with all their hearts. After she graduated from a famous medical school, Dr Wang was appointed to work in a small clinic in a faraway village. The local people soon learned to trust her, and many of them came to her even at midnight when they were in trouble. She responded to every call with great patience, and her quick response saved many lives in the area. She never complained about the hard work or the low income, because she believed that helping others was the meaning of her life. Every month she put aside some money from her savings to buy medicine for the poor patients who could not afford it, and she often said that the majority of the people in the village were farmers who worked hard all year round. One winter night, a terrible accident happened on the mountain road. A car fell into the river, and a young man was seriously injured in the terrible accident. When Dr Wang heard the news, she ran out of the house at once, carrying her first aid box. The road was covered with ice, and she fell twice on the way, but she never thought of giving up. At the scene of the accident, she found the young man lying on the ground with a broken leg. She quickly cleaned the wound, stopped the bleeding and fixed the broken leg with a piece of wood, just like giving first aid. The man was in despair and kept crying, so she held his hand and told him softly that everything would be fine. Her calm voice and warm words gave the young man great courage, and he finally stopped shaking. Later, the young man fully recovered, and he came to the clinic with his family to thank Dr Wang. He knelt down and said that her kindness had given him a second life. Dr Wang just smiled and said that it was her duty to help people in need. She often told the young doctors in the clinic that a doctor should be flexible in treatment, patient with every patient, and never too proud to learn from others. She also taught them to give first aid to anyone who needed it, because every minute could mean the difference between life and death. When Dr Wang passed away twenty years ago, the whole village came to say goodbye to her, and the local government built a small museum in memory of her great work. Her story, like a warm fable, still teaches us that kindness, courage and a strong sense of duty are the most precious things in the world. 1. 1.
