Exploring the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China is the highest plateau in the world, with an average altitude of over 4,000 metres. It is often called the “Roof of the World”. This vast region covers about 2.5 million square kilometres and is home to many unique species.
Because of the high altitude, the weather on the plateau is very different from other places. The temperature changes greatly between day and night. Even in summer, the nights can be freezing cold. The air is thin and dry, making it hard for visitors to breathe at first.
Despite these challenges, the plateau supports a surprising variety of wildlife. The Tibetan antelope, also known as the chiru, is a graceful animal with beautiful horns. It can survive the cold winters and thin air because of its thick fur and special breathing system. The plateau is also home to wild yaks, which are large, strong animals that provide meat, milk and wool for the local people. The Tibetan fox is another resident of this region, known for its cleverness and ability to hunt in the rocky landscape.
However, the plateau faces problems. Climate change is causing the glaciers to melt at an alarming rate. Overgrazing by livestock is damaging the grasslands. Some animals are being hunted illegally. Scientists and conservation groups are working to protect this unique environment. They are setting up nature reserves and educating local people about the importance of wildlife protection.

Tigers in Danger
Tigers are the largest cats in the world. They are powerful and beautiful animals. But today, tigers are in great danger. One hundred years ago, there were about 100,000 tigers in the wild. Today, there are fewer than 4,000.
There are many reasons for this. First, people have cut down many forests. Tigers have lost their homes. Second, some people hunt tigers for their fur and body parts. Third, the number of their prey—animals like deer and wild pigs—is also decreasing.
In some countries, people are working hard to save tigers. They have set up national parks and protection areas. They also try to stop tiger hunting. In India, the number of tigers has increased in recent years because of these efforts.
Tigers are important to the ecosystem. When we protect tigers, we also protect many other animals and plants. So saving tigers is not just about saving one species—it’s about saving the whole forest.
