National Elephant Appreciation Day
Next date: September 22, 2025
Official website: https: //elephantconservation.org/event/elephant-appreciation-day/
National Elephant Appreciation Day is a time to honor elephants, raise awareness about their difficult situation, and encourage further efforts to save this species from extinction. It’s also the perfect time to promote sustainable(可持续性的) tourism practices and companies that encourage the protection of elephants.
Elephants are the largest land animals in the world, which has made them a main target for illegal hunters. In fact, the ivory(象牙) trade alone is thought to be worth $23 billion yearly. Additional threats include habitat loss and human-elephant conflict. There are two species of elephant; the Asian and the African, with both seeing rapid population declines.
How you can get involved:
Visit an elephant shelter: Take a trip to an elephant shelter and see first-hand the beauty of these animals up close. You can even consider volunteering your time too. Just ensure you only visit responsible elephant shelters that don’t carry out harmful tourist activities such as elephant riding and animal performances.
Learn more about elephants: Make a point to learn more about elephants to increase your understanding of their unique needs.
Promote elephant protection and awareness: Spread awareness of global protection efforts to save elephants and promote further action. You can also consider setting up a fundraising event in your local community.
Adopt(领养)an elephant: Many zoos and shelters allow you to symbolically adopt an elephant in need to help pay for their care. This makes a wonderful gift for someone who loves elephants, some even offer a toy as a thank you, as well as regular updates so you can see how well your adoptee is doing.

Many people are choosing plant-based foods today. Drinks like oat and almond milk are very popular. But there’s one food that still has people divided — vegan (纯素的) cheese. Many cheese lovers find it hard to accept this replacement. Most people say it just doesn’t taste or feel like real cheese, so it hasn’t gained the same popularity as other plant-based products.
A company in Berlin, Germany, called Formo, wants to fix that. Formo uses fermentation (发酵), a process that helps grow healthy proteins using microbes (微生物), to turn existing vegan cheese into something creamy and cheesy.
Raffael Wohlgensinger, who founded Formo, is a big cheese fan. He was unhappy with the vegan cheese he found in stores. He also wanted to make cheese that is better for the planet. Regular cheese comes from cows, and cows need a lot of space, water, and food. They also produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. But there’s a problem: most vegan cheeses are made with things like coconut oil, and they don’t have the same melt, or taste as dairy cheese.
In 2023, Formo raised $61 million and began selling their vegan cream cheese in over 2,000 stores in Germany. They plan to come to the U.S. in 2027 and establish a dominant presence there. Formo is also testing precision fermentation. This is where microbes are applied to make real milk proteins without using cows. These proteins can help the cheese melt and stretch just like dairy cheese! The hope is that one day, these tasty vegan cheeses will be cheaper, better for the Earth, and loved by everyone — even big cheese fans.
Why is this important? Because making cheese in this new way could help protect the planet. Formo hopes their prices will go down over time, so more people can afford vegan cheese. They believe microbes can help make tasty, healthy, and planet-friendly cheese for the future.
8. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A. By presenting a contrast. B. By quoting a scientific study.
C. By explaining a new technology. D. By giving examples of popular foods.
9. Why does the author mention regular cheese?
A. To introduce the history of cheese making.
B. To explain why regular cheese is more popular.
C. To stress the difficulty of making vegan cheese.
D. To show the advantages of Formo’s vegan cheese.
10. What will Formo do in the future?
A. Stop adding coconut oil. B. Focus on domestic market.
C. Make products more accessible. D. Abandon precision fermentation.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Popular Plant-Based Drinks and Foods B. Environmental Problems Caused by Cows
C. Making Tasty Vegan Cheese with Microbes D. The Development of German Food Companies

根据第一段“Many people are choosing plant-based foods today. Drinks like oat and almond milk are very popular. But there’s one food that still has people divided — vegan (纯素的) cheese. Many cheese lovers find it hard to accept this replacement. Most people say it just doesn’t taste or feel like real cheese, so it hasn’t gained the same popularity as other plant-based products.( 如今,越来越多的人选择以植物为原料制作的食物。
根据第三段“Raffael Wohlgensinger, who founded Formo, is a big cheese fan. He was unhappy with the vegan cheese he found in stores. He also wanted to make cheese that is better for the planet. Regular cheese comes from cows, and cows need a lot of space, water, and food. They also produce methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. But there’s a problem: most vegan cheeses are made with things like coconut oil, and they don’t have the same melt, or taste as dairy cheese.( Formo 的创始人拉斐尔·沃格根辛格是一位超级奶酪爱好者。
根据第四段中“In 2023, Formo raised $61 million and began selling their vegan cream cheese in over 2,000 stores in Germany. They plan to come to the U.S. in 2027 and establish a dominant presence there.( 2023 年,Formo 获得了 6100 万美元的投资,并开始在德国的 2000 多家商店销售他们的纯素奶油奶酪。他们计划于 2027 年来到美国,并在那里建立主导地位。)”以及第五段中“Formo hopes their prices will go down over time, so more people can afford vegan cheese.( Formo希望随着时间的推移,他们的产品价格会逐渐降低,这样更多的人就能负担得起纯素奶酪了。)”

A key breakthrough came when she saw a chimpanzee use a twig to fish for termites — challenging the belief that only humans make and use tools.
Over the years, her research revealed chimpanzees have complex social structures and feel emotions like joy and grief. She also raised awareness about protecting their habitats, threatened by deforestation and poaching. Today, in her late 80s, Goodall still travels the world advocating for wildlife conservation and runs the Jane Goodall Institute, supporting projects in over 30 countries. Her story shows curiosity and perseverance can lead to extraordinary achievements.

41.enhancing 42.to safeguard 43.particularly 44.regional 45.and

capability to do sth. 故填to safeguard。
此处修饰动词 stress(强调),需用副词,particular的副词形式是 particularly(尤其)。

Lily hurried down Oak Street, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders as she checked her watch for the third time. She was five minutes late for her part-time job at the community library and knew her boss would be waiting. As she rounded the corner near the bakery, she nearly ran into an elderly woman carrying a large, heavy canvas bag.
“Sorry! I’m so sorry — I wasn’t looking!” Lily explained, quickly comforting the woman. The woman smiled warmly, her eyes wrinkling at the corners. “No harm done, dear. My legs aren’t what they used to be, and this bag’s heavier than it looks.” Lily glanced down and saw the bag stuffed with groceries. The woman’s knuckles (指关节) turned white as she held the handles tight, her hands trembling slightly.
“Let me take this for you — it’s too heavy,” Lily said, taking the bag before she could refuse. The woman, Mrs. Henderson, pointed to a small blue house with a white fence two blocks away. As they walked slowly, Mrs. Henderson chatted about her injured cat, Mabel. She found it on the street and took it home. Now she was worried about it. They tried to speed up.
By the time they reached the house, Lily was fifteen minutes late for work. Mrs. Henderson insisted on inviting her in for lemonade and cookies, but Lily said, “I really have to go, but nice meeting you!”. Mrs. Henderson held her hands tightly and thanked her again and again. “You’re such a kind girl. Not many young people these days would stop to help an old lady like me.” she said.
Lily rushed to the library, where her boss Mr. Jenkins gave her a gentle reminder about being on time. But as she shelved books that afternoon, she couldn’t stop thinking about Mrs. Henderson’s grateful smile. That evening, as she walked home, she passed Mrs. Henderson’s house and noticed something strange through the living room window.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Mrs. Henderson was sitting alone in the room, talking to her cat.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

Then Lily gently knocked on the door.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Mrs. Henderson was sitting alone in the room, talking to her cat. Mabel lay weakly on the couch, with its fur messy and eyes half-closed. “I know you’re hurting, but I am helpless here too, Dear.” Mrs. Henderson whispered, stroking the cat slowly, her voice shaky. “I wanted to take you to the vet, but my legs just won’t let me hurry, you know.” Lily’s chest felt tight — she’d noticed how worried Mrs. Henderson was earlier, but left too fast. She knew she had to do something to help.
Then Lily gently knocked on the door. When Mrs. Henderson opened it, surprise made her eyes wide. “I can help you to take Mabel to the vet,” Lily said in a hurried and eager voice. “My mom works at the animal clinic nearby, and I brought a bag to carry the cat.” Mrs. Henderson held Lily’s hands, tears welled up in her eyes. “Thank you so much,” she said over and over again. Together, they lifted Mabel carefully, heading to the clinic with light, hopeful steps.

Cole Stelter arrived at Virginia Tech with a clear plan. Born in South Dakota, he moved to Virginia in 2012 and discovered his passion for biomedical engineering early on. “I’ve always loved Virginia Tech,” Stelter said. “Once I toured the department, I was completely impressed. I haven’t had a single regret.”
His journey into engineering began in high school. Through a special program, Stelter became fascinated by bioprinting. “We worked with a bioprinter and even printed materials using algae (藻类),” he recalled. “That was my first chance to see that engineering could directly help human health.”
Upon arriving at Virginia Tech, Stelter didn’t wait to dive into practical work. During his freshman year, he sought research opportunities and joined the Kim Lab led by Assistant Professor Oleg Kim. “Once I met the lab and the graduate students, I knew it was where I wanted to be,” Stelter said. In the lab, he focused on researching the effects of saliva (唾液) on blood clotting (凝块) mechanics in oral wound healing. His findings were great, discovering that saliva significantly reduces the time required for clot formation.
Stelter’s senior design team is also making progress in medical technology. They are developing a specialized nerve conduit (神经导管) designed to help the repair of peripheral nerve injuries. This device serves as a bridge for damaged nerves, effectively promoting natural regrowth. “Instead of relying on nerve grafts (移植), which often only restore about half of motor and sensory function, our goal is to allow the nerve to reconnect, naturally,” Stelter explained. “That could greatly improve recovery.”
After graduating in just three years, Stelter has found his true interest in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. He plans to continue his research at Virginia Tech and in the Kim Lab, eventually working toward a Ph. D.to continue making an impact on human health through his dedicated scientific efforts.
4. What initially inspired Stelter’s passion for biomedical engineering?
A. His tour of Virginia Tech’s department. B. A desire to improve environment.
C. His personal experience with diseases. D. A high school program with bioprinting.
5. What did Stelter discover about saliva in wound healing?
A. It slows down blood clotting. B. It shortens the time of clot formation.
C. It replaces the need for grafts. D. It assists natural nerve growth.
6. What is the value of the new device?
A. It replaces traditional motor functions. B. It simplifies complex graft processes.
C. It improves nerves’natural regrowth. D. It contributes to a complete recovery.
7. Which best describes Stelter’s educational journey?
A. Physically demanding. B. Eye-opening.
C. Financially rewarding. D. Goal-driven.

Jane Goodall, a world-famous primatologist (灵长类动物学家), dedicated her life to studying chimpanzees. Born in London in 1934, she fell in love with animals as a child — her father gave her a toy chimpanzee named Jubilee at two, and she spent hours observing birds and insects in her backyard.
After high school, Goodall saved money for an African trip by working as a secretary. In 1957, she met renowned anthropologist Louis Leakey in Kenya. Impressed by her curiosity, Leakey offered her a job studying chimpanzees in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park — even though few believed a woman without a college degree could do serious scientific research.
In 1960, Goodall arrived in Gombe. Living alone in a small camp, she woke early to follow chimpanzee groups. At first, the chimpanzees were wary of her and kept their distance, but her patience won their trust.

E-waste (also known as waste electrical and electronic equipment or WEEE) is the world’s fastest-growing waste stream.____16____An estimated 50 million tons of e-waste is produced globally every year, weighing more than all of the commercial airliners ever made. But only 20% of that is formally recycled, and most gets thrown away or sent to landfill or burnt.
However, many people are unaware that waste electronics can hold significant quantities of valuable materials.____17____Like all critical raw materials, gold is a finite resource, yet 7% of the world’s gold is currently sitting in disused electronics. Traditional gold extraction (提取) from e-waste usually involves exporting devices to other countries, where e-waste is smelted down at extremely high temperatures in a carbon-intensive process.____18____
Chemist Hayley Messenger and her team, working with Canadian company Excir, have invented and patented a new green technology to extract gold at room temperature. It can recover 99% of gold from the printed circuit boards in old laptops and mobile phones.____19____The chemical solution can be reused up to 20 times, making the process efficient, clean and low-carbon.
____20____Besides, further innovation is also needed to make e-waste recycling mainstream, especially for small electrical goods like chargers and cables. With more research and investment, these green technologies can help build a more circular economy for precious metals and reduce the environmental harm caused by traditional mining.
A. Gold is one of the precious materials in e-waste.
B. Its huge output and poor handling trouble the world.
C. E-waste production rises with electronic product upgrades.
D. So there is a pressing need for developing much greener methods.
E. The breakthrough method is both highly efficient and eco-friendly.
F. They want to recover as much of the precious metal as they can.
G. Green tech is the key to building a sustainable circular economy for metals.
