Commencement (毕业典礼) season has arrived again — and this year, many keynote speakers have discovered that it’s tough to get graduating students excited about a future shaped by artificial intelligence (AI).
Last weekend, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced repeated boos (倒彩) during his speech to about 10,000 University of Arizona graduates on the great changes brought about by AI. A similar response met Scott Borchetta, the CEO of Big Machine Records, when he spoke to the graduating class of Middle Tennessee State University about how AI is helping the music industry.
“At the beginning we were excited about it,” said Kareen Gill, a graduate of University of Arizona with a political science degree. “But now, we don’t want it messing with the jobs that we’ve worked for years — so hard for four years — to be qualified for.”
“One immediate impact I have noticed is fewer entry level positions because AI is replacing many of those jobs,” said Sami Wargo, who just graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. “I have applied for around 30 jobs but haven’t landed one yet. That sucks.”
Not everyone has been met with verbal pushback to AI, though. When CleanHarbors founder Alan McKim spoke at the Northeastern University commencement, he appealed to the graduates to accept AI, but warned, “Your character will matter more than your code (代码).” No boos were heard in the audience.
As Dave Lee wrote in Bloomberg, “For any commencement speaker in 2026, no conversation about the future could be credible without mentioning AI. But in front of today’s graduates, striking the right tone is hard. They know the world of work they are entering has never been more uncertain. Anxiety runs high.”
24. What message can we get from the first two paragraphs?
A. The keynote speeches were boring. B. Many graduates felt threatened by AI.
C. AI has become an unavoidable topic. D. Some graduating students were rude.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Graduation. B. Speech. C. AI. D. Music industry.
26. Which is closest in meaning to “That sucks” in paragraph 4?
A. It is fair enough. B. It is untrue.
C. It is very bad. D. It is funny.
27. What is Dave Lee’s advice?
A. Focus on AI’s harm. B. Persuade graduates to accept AI.
C. Avoid mentioning AI. D. Be mindful of graduates’ worry.

Do you love seeing beautiful lanterns outside? The best time to do this is during the Lantern Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month. This year it is on Feb. 22, marking the end of Spring Festival celebrations.
Lanterns are a big part of the festival. One story says that the bright lanterns show respect for gods. Another says that people light lanterns to celebrate the declining darkness of winter. Watching lanterns is a great event. You see lanterns in any sizes and shapes you can imagine, from animals to plants and flowers. To make this activity more fun, people paste (粘贴) riddles (谜语) on the lanterns. “Ten plus ten, still is ten, ten minus ten, again is ten.” Guess what? It is a pair of gloves.
In some places, people like releasing sky lanterns, which are called Kongming lanterns. A sky lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper, with an opening at the bottom, where there is a small fire source. When the bright lights fly high in the sky, people bless family members and make wishes. Releasing river lights is also a way to bless for each other. Usually, the lights are in the shape of a lotus.
In old times, the Lantern Festival was also romantic. At that time, young girls were not allowed to go out very often except during certain festivals. Therefore, looking at lanterns gave young people a chance to meet each other. A line from Xin Qiji, a poet during the Song Dynasty, shows this: “Anxiously, I searched for her in thousands, hundreds of ways. Suddenly I turned, and there she was in the declining light.”
28. Why do people light lanterns during the Lantern Festival?
A. To paste riddles on lanterns for fun.
B. To release sky lanterns and make wishes.
C. To give young people a chance to meet each other.
D. To show respect for gods and celebrate the end of winter’s darkness.
29. Which of the following statements about the Lantern Festival is TRUE?
A. People make wishes when releasing lights.
B. People light lanterns to drive animals away.
C. People paste riddles to show off their knowledge.
D. Young girls were not allowed to go out on the day.
30. What does the underlined word in the last paragraph most likely mean?
A. growing. B. fading. C. brightening. D. steady.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A day to Guess Lantern Riddles. B. The Origin of the Lantern Festival.
C. Celebrations of the Lantern Festival. D. River Lights on the Lantern Festival.

Exciting news from the University of Waterloo! A team of devoted researchers, led by PhD student Wei Wei, has made a remarkable discovery that holds the potential to change plastic waste into acetic acid (醋酸), using the power of sunlight.
Dr. Yimin Wu, a professor at the university, shared their inspiring vision, saying, “Our goal was to solve the plastic pollution challenge by changing microplastic waste into high-value products using sunlight.” This mission is especially significant as plastic waste, particularly microplastics, has spread across ecosystems worldwide, raising serious concerns about its impact on both wildlife and human health.
With global plastic recycling rates still falling behind, this research team has stepped up to the challenge. They have developed a bio-inspired photocatalysis (光催化) method using special iron atoms (铁原子). This technology copies how certain fungi (真菌) break down organic matter, showing the creativity of nature.
When placed under sunlight, the material drives a series of chemical reactions that change plastic into acetic acid with high selectivity. The reaction takes place in water, which is particularly important for addressing plastic pollution in waters.
The study shows that this method can effectively produce acetic acid from common plastics and it works well even with mixed plastic types. This adaptability makes the approach a promising replacement to traditional plastic burning, supporting eco-friendly use of materials and offering a fresh strategy for upcycling.
Roy Brouwer, coauthor of the research, stresses the benefits of this innovation, noting, “In terms of business and society, the financial and economic benefits related to this innovation seem promising.”
The research findings also open up exciting new ways for directly addressing microplastics. By breaking down plastics at the chemical level, this process could play an important role in preventing the build-up of microplastics in our water systems.
While still at the laboratory stage, the team expects that this approach could be adapted for large-scale, broader environmental cleanup and the photocatalytic upcycling system can be further improved.
32. What led the research team to start their study originally?
A. Rising recycling rates of plastic. B. Business profits from acetic acid.
C. Discovery of sunlight’s chemical power. D. Plastic pollution’s widespread harm.
33. What can we learn about the photocatalysis method?
A. It can be applied to various plastics.
B. It can completely remove microplastics.
C. It breaks down plastics faster than burning.
D. It needs high temperatures to support reactions.
34. What does the team expect of their research findings?
A. Helping reduce chemical use. B. Coming into use immediately.
C. Being used on a larger scale. D. Opening up a market for acetic acid.
35. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A guidebook to waste treatment. B. A scientific research report.
C. A brochure on acetic acid production. D. A review on the plastic industry.

The first time I swam at night was in the sea, just off the beach in Dover. I was in my mid-20s, training with a group of strangers for a Channel relay (英吉利海峡接力赛). Back then, I didn’t like the dark on land, and if something touched my leg in the water, I would get really frightened. Naturally, the dark sea just made me especially nervous. However, because I knew how much this chance meant, I tried to hide my fear and get on with it. ____36____ But inside, my heart raced.
What I remember is unclear: the brown water of that coastline and the red and green lights hanging from our goggles (护目镜). There were no clear conversations or details I can remember. ____37____ Just unclear moments and nerves. And yet, some of my most powerful, emotional swims since then have been in the dark.
____38____ It was early summer and my friend Amanda encouraged me to come along for a night swim in the hope of seeing them. I had no idea what to expect. The experience was amazing. I walked into the water and trusted the people near me. After a few minutes, when I started swimming, I saw a line of sparkling (闪烁的) lights in the water. It took my breath away.
Every move made lights appear. It felt like magic. The lights stayed and every time I moved, I saw more shining lights. It was unusual and quietly extraordinary. ____39____
It may seem strange to invite you into darkness in May just as the days lengthen and light stays further into the evening. ____40____ Whether you are planning your first night swim or training for a long and difficult challenge, I hope you can discover the magic that waits after sunset.

David came to my fifth-grade class halfway through the year. He came from a broken home: his only parent, his father, was behind bars. David refused to do homework, picked fights on the playground, and talked back to teachers. Other students avoided him, and even some fellow teachers advised me to “give up on him” — but I saw intelligence and loneliness in his eyes, especially when he stared at the nature posters on my classroom wall.
I tried to help him with assignments, and to talk to him about his secret interest in animals, and I never shouted at him even when he misbehaved. But David pushed me away. One day, he got into a fight with a classmate over a pencil, and I had to pull them apart. As I cleaned his scrapes (擦伤), he said softly, “Why do you even care?” I handed him a blank notebook: “Let’s make a nature journal — draw whatever you see outside. No rules, no grades.”
He hesitated but took the notebook, and that night, he drew a bird he’d seen in the schoolyard. The next day, he slid the journal across my desk without a word. I looked through it and smiled — his drawing was rough but full of details. “This is amazing, David. Want to add more tomorrow?” Those words seemed to shock him — no one had ever praised his work before. Slowly, he started to open up: he told me he loved drawing birds and insects, and wanted to fill the journal with all the creatures in the neighborhood.
Later, he always stayed after school to draw in the garden, hiding the notebook in his backpack like a treasure. His classmates started to notice his change: when he shared a drawing of a bug with a friend, the class fell silent in shock.
注意:
(1)续写词数应在150个左右。

【原文】M: Welcome to my show. Today I want to share with you how I prepared for my travels. When I turned 30, I decided to take a year off to travel around the world. First, I had to save up money. I had some savings, but they weren’t enough. So I spent the next six months spending less and making more money. I rented out my house and moved into a small flat. I kept my regular job and also took on part-time work. At the same time, I mapped out my trip. I didn’t want to visit only the most well-known spots. I planned to experience the cultures of different countries. While doing my research, I discovered many online communities around the world. People were sharing their experiences, doing exactly what I was planning to do. I got in touch with them and they provided valuable resources to help me plan the trip. I’ll share the websites of these online communities later for you to check out. In my next show, I’ll talk about some of my experiences on the trip.

【答案】24. B 25. C 26. C 27. D

【答案】32. D 33. A 34. C 35. B

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】例文
On the last day of school, David handed me a piece of paper before leaving. It was a sketch of me standing by the classroom garden, my hand resting on an oak sapling, with a little sparrow perched on my shoulder. At the bottom, he wrote in messy ink: “Thank you for caring when no one else did.” He turned and ran out before I could say a word, and I never saw him after that semester. I often wondered if he still kept drawing, if he ever got the stable, warm life he deserved.
But three years later, a tall boy showed up at my classroom door, a thick notebook in his hands. It was David, much taller and calmer than I remembered. He opened the notebook to show me page after page of detailed, vivid wildlife drawings, all labeled with specific dates and locations. He told me he had won a city art award for his nature drawings, and he came to thank me for that first blank notebook that gave him a reason to keep going. That day, I realized one small act of belief can change a person’s whole life.
