It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration. I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
Paragraph 1: We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.

Paragraph 2: I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.

My husband’s company promoted him and relocated us to New York City. We found a safe, affordable place to live. Once we got settled in, I was determined to find employment. After a few days of searching and applying, I was fortunate to find a job as an administrative assistant with Young & Rubicam, a famous advertising agency. I wasn’t thrilled about the job because I had graduated with a degree to teach English, but the pay was good, and the extra money was a blessing.
The job was rather dull, though, mainly typing letters, answering phones, setting up for conferences, filing, scheduling meetings, arranging travel for the copywriters (撰稿人), etc. I felt that what I was doing was insignificant. As letters or travel brochures would come across my desk to be typed, I would read over them. Often, there were grammatical errors or the spelling was not always accurate, but since it wasn’t my job to correct them, I typed them as they were given to me.
One day, I was talking to my grandmother, LouOlive Graham. Anyone not related to her called her Lou. Everybody else, including all twelve of her children and fifteen grandchildren, called her “Muh”. Muh was a wise woman lady. Her children adored and admired her. There was nothing better than to spend a day with Muh, which meant you were going to hear fascinating stories about her growing up, while savoring her tea and cakes.
Over tea, I said, “Muh, you should see the things that come across my desk — letters, memos, and brochures with crazy grammar, poor spelling, and awkward sentences. But I guess it’s not my job to correct them.” Then, I added that I only did what they paid me to do.
Muh listened attentively, as she always did, and after I finished, she said very calmly, “Honey, don’t just do enough to get by. Always do your best work. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. You may find more enjoyment in the job if you do your best. Plus, it never hurts you to let people know that you can do more than what they hired you to do.”

For years, I held the firm belief that being a good teacher meant showing up, no matter what life threw at me. I suffered from Crohn’s disease, whose pain could be almost unbearable at times. Yet I kept pushing through, skipping lunch to avoid triggering symptoms and staying late to perfect my teaching plans. I told myself that exhaustion was simply a sign of true dedication.
My students saw only the smiling, energetic teacher who greeted them each morning. Few knew about the pills hidden in my desk drawer or the quiet moments when I had to lean against the wall, waiting for the pain to pass. I took pride in never missing a single class, believing that my presence alone was what held everything together.
Then came the day when my body refused to keep silent. After weeks of pretending to be fine, I was sent to hospital with a severe complication, which forced me to leave my classroom. Strangely enough, my first thought was not about my own health. All I cared about was my students. I wondered who would guide them and how they could manage without me. The heavy sense of teacher guilt struck me even before the pain medication began to work.
During my stay in hospital, something totally unexpected happened, which reshaped my understanding of strength more deeply than the illness ever could. My students poured out their warmth by writing me sincere letters. My colleagues stepped in to help without any hesitation.
To my surprise, a special fund was even created to support my family, and warm meals began arriving at our door regularly. My co-workers visited me frequently, reassuring me that my only task now was to rest. I had long believed that without me, everything would fall apart — yet here I was, watching the world continue, held together by the very community I had devoted myself to.

Sumi’s daughter Anna had always been called “Number 23.” Every time the school released exam results, Anna would always end up in 23rd position among 50 pupils. Always 23, regardless of topic or term. Every time Sumi heard that nickname, it caused her concern.
When Sumi stayed with her friends, their discussion nearly always turned to their children. You know how it goes-one parent discusses their child’s piano honors, another boasts about math olympiads or leadership responsibilities. While others were honoring these “great youngsters,” all Sumi could think about was Anna and her unpleasant nickname, Number 23.
Sumi had done everything to help Anna with school-hired professional tutors, bought fancy stationery, even packed brain food. And Anna tried. She gave up sketching, paper cutouts, and many others. She moved from one class to another, endlessly trying. But then the indicators started showing-she lost her appetite, couldn’t sleep, and sweated all the time. Eventually, she got terribly sick. That was when Sumi gave in. She stopped pressing and Anna bounced back to being the cheery little child they knew.
One day, Sumi and her friends took their families for a weekend outing. At lunch, two kids argued fiercely over a dessert, and no one could calm them down. Then Anna stepped up. “Let’s flip a coin,” she said. Simple as that, the problem was solved, and everyone was amazed.
On the way back, they hit traffic, and the kids grew restless. Anna? She told jokes like a big sister, even making the adults laugh. Then she picked up the leftover candy boxes and folded them into animals-paper elephants, paper lions, and paper birds. Before saying goodbye, she gave each child one as a gift. The other parents were full of admiration. For the first time in years, Sumi felt something rise in her chest-pride.

Paragraph 1: Anna’s coin trick worked like magic.

Paragraph 2: On the way back, something unexpected happened.

Paragraph 1: We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. I said gently and quietly, "No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others' thoughts." He sat still with a deep breath. "You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here", I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else's.
Paragraph 2: I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a heart disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn't take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. "Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!" they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone's joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

Paragraph 1: This experience opened my eyes completely.
Paragraph 2: I returned to the classroom a changed teacher.
I finally realized that being a good teacher isn’t about never falling down, but about being brave enough to let others help when I’m weak.
My stubborn dedication had made me overlook the warmth around me — my students’ care, my colleagues’ support, and the strength of our school community.
True strength, I learned, isn’t in enduring alone, but in accepting kindness and letting our connections hold us up.
Those letters and acts of care reminded me that teaching is a two-way journey, not a one-person sacrifice.
第二段
I no longer hid my struggles; instead, I shared small truths about my health with my students, teaching them that it’s okay to be imperfect.
I stopped skipping lunch and stayed late only when necessary, knowing that my well-being mattered too.
Most importantly, I began to emphasize kindness and mutual support in my class, letting my students see that dedication means caring for ourselves as much as we care for others.
That illness taught me the greatest lesson: a good teacher doesn’t hold everything together alone — we hold each other up.

Paragraph 1: Anna’s coin trick worked like magic. She settled the quarrel like a big sister, even making the adults laugh. Then she picked up the leftover candy boxes and folded them into animals — paper elephants, paper lions, and paper birds. Before saying goodbye, she gave each child one as a gift. The other parents were full of admiration. For the first time in years, Sumi felt something rise in her chest — pride.
Paragraph 2: On the way back, they hit traffic, and the kids grew restless. Anna told jokes, holding the situation steady like a big sister. She folded the candy boxes into paper elephants, paper lions and paper birds, and gave each child one as a gift. The other parents were full of admiration. Sumi realized then that her daughter was no longer just “Number 23” — she was someone who could light up a room.
【词汇激活】行为类:settle(化解), fold(折叠), admire(赞赏);情绪类:pride(骄傲), restless(躁动), amaze(惊讶)
【点睛】“For the first time in years, Sumi felt something rise in her chest — pride.”
