根据“turn out to be”固定搭配,前文心理预期是简单,后文实际情况是最难作业,turn out to be“结果是、最终成为”契合前后反差逻辑;turned down“调低、拒绝”、turned up“露面”、turned off“关掉”,语义不符合上下文转折关系。
describe sb. as sth.
make good use of是固定短语“充分利用”,契合发挥性格优势的上下文;take、get、give不能构成该固定搭配。
A
In the 1980s, many foreign photographers came to China. They took photos of the social changes after the country’s opening-up. Mike Emery, now 69, is one of them.
In the early spring of 1980, Emery got a job as a photographer on a ship to China. His main job was to take photos for the guests on the ship. When he stepped onto the land of China for the very first time, he was so excited. Emery followed the guests to big cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. In his spare time, he walked with a camera through the streets alone and recorded people’s daily lives in those cities. He took a large number of pictures of children. In his photos, they played on the streets, went to school, and smiled at him happily.
Emery returned to China 39 years later. When he stepped off the plane and saw the country again, he saw so many tall apartment blocks that he could hardly believe his eyes. Besides, the once narrow streets have become wide roads and bridges. This change has made public transportation more convenient. In the same year, he published a photo book—China 1980. He hopes these photos can help people understand Chinese society in 1980 and show them China’s great changes.
Last year, from July 24th to August 19th, Emery had a photo exhibition (展览), Nice to Meet You, in Shanghai. These photos bring back pleasant old memories. “Through these photos, people today can walk into the past and touch the special stories of China,” he said.

【答案】16.A 17.B 18.C 19.C 20.D
原文第二段“In the early spring of 1980... recorded people’s daily lives. He took a large number of pictures of children.”,表明1980年他在中国拍摄了大量照片。
17.原文第三段“he saw so many tall apartment blocks that he could hardly believe his eyes.”,“hardly believe his eyes”意为“不敢相信眼前景象”,对应surprised(惊讶的)。
18.原文第二段交代初次来华是1980年,第三段“Emery returned to China 39 years later”,1980+39=2019。

Two Minds, Two Stories
When we think of great inventors, two names often come to mind: Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Both were brilliant, but their approaches to creativity were very different.
Edison is known for his practical inventions, such as the light bulb and the phonograph. He believed in hard work and teamwork. He once said, “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration (汗水).” Edison had a large team of assistants and tested thousands of materials before finding the right one for the light bulb filament. His method was trial and error — keep trying until something works.
Tesla, on the other hand, was a dreamer. He imagined his inventions in complete detail before building them. He is known for his work on alternating current (AC) electricity, which powers most of our homes today. Tesla preferred to work alone and often spent hours visualizing his ideas in his mind. He believed that a clear mental picture was more important than physical testing.
Despite their differences, both men changed the world. Edison’s approach shows us the value of persistence and teamwork. Tesla’s approach reminds us that imagination and vision are also powerful tools. Perhaps the best way to be creative is to combine both — use your imagination to dream, and use hard work to make those dreams come true.
21.According to the passage, how did Edison and Tesla differ?
A.One was American and the other was European.
B.One worked in the 19th century and the other in the 20th.
C.One focused on practical testing and the other on mental imagining.
D.One invented the light bulb and the other invented the radio.
22.What does Edison’s famous quote “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration” suggest?
A.Inspiration is more important than hard work.
B.Hard work is more important than inspiration.
C.Geniuses do not need to work hard.
D.Perspiration is a waste of time.
23.How did Tesla often develop his inventions?
A.By testing thousands of materials. B.By working with a large team.
C.By visualizing them in his mind first. D.By copying Edison’s work.
24.The word “visualizing” in the third paragraph most probably means ________.
A.drawing pictures B.building models
C.forming mental images D.writing descriptions
25.What is the writer’s final suggestion about creativity?
A.Only Edison’s method works.
B.Only Tesla’s method works.
C.We should combine imagination with hard work.
D.We should choose one method and stick to it.
本文明确说:“Edison is known for his practical inventions... Tesla, on the other hand, was a dreamer.”Edison以他的实用型发明而闻名……Tesla则相反,他是个梦想家。 Tesla“visualizing his ideas in his mind”脑中想象。
22.第2段提到“He believed in hard work and teamwork. He once said, ‘Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration (汗水).’
23.第3段提到“Tesla preferred to work alone and often spent hours visualizing his ideas in his mind”Tesla经常是通过脑中想象进行发明的。
24.第3段的“in his mind”和“He believed that a clear mental picture was more important than physical testing.”
25.最后一段最后一句:“Perhaps the best way ... is to combine both—use your imagination to dream, and use hard work to make those dreams come true.”
C
Do you know when restaurants were invented? The first restaurants were invented thousands of years ago. However, they were very different from restaurants today.
The first restaurants were in ancient Greece (希腊) and ancient Rome. These restaurants served food in large stone bowls. Everyone shared the food from big bowls. People believe that these places were very popular because most homes in ancient Greece and Rome did not have kitchens. Also, people didn’t have to store food at home if they ate their meals at these restaurants.
Later, restaurants began to open in China. In the early 1100s, more than one million people lived in the city of Hangzhou, China. It was a very busy city, and people had money. Smart cooks started cooking and selling food along the big streets in the city. Unlike in ancient Greece and Rome, people in China could choose food from a menu. They didn’t have to eat everyone else’s food.
For the next several centuries, there were restaurants all over the world. People could buy food in the street or at inns (小旅馆). Then in the middle of the 1700s, restaurants started opening in Paris. These restaurants were more similar to the restaurants we know today. There was a wider choice of food, and eating in these restaurants was a more enjoyable experience. In the 19th century, trains made travel much faster and simpler. In the end, this kind of restaurant began to appear all over Europe and in other parts of the world.
Now, restaurants are everywhere. You can buy different kinds of food. You can get food sent to your door. But remember it wasn’t always like that.

The world is changing fast. Twenty-five years ago, most young people in the UK wanted to take up 36 , work in law, or be doctors. But nowadays, things are greatly different. Recently, an organization has 37 out a survey among 1,002 people. The survey found that the “dream job” for many young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger (视频博主), or “vlogger”. Over 40% of 38 put “vlogger” as their top choice. The rapid 39 in digital tools has brought about this change. The Internet and social media have made it much easier and more convenient to reach 40 communities. “In the past, Hollywood created some of the 41 stars of all time; now, anyone with a computer and a camera may become a star,” said Phil Samuels, an expert on social media from the UK. “From fashion to art, these self-made stars communicate with their fans of all 42 online.” People see the bright side of being a vlogger, 43 they forget the challenges of achieving success. Many may be short of support or money at the beginning. This has led to a discussion: Should young people keep up 44 this trend (趋势)? Or do traditional jobs still 45 a good choice for them?
36.singing 37.carried 38.them 39.improvement 40.international 41.biggest 42.ages 43.but 44.with 45.remain
