Dear Jakub,
My parents plan everything for me, like my schoolwork, my free time and even my holidays. I told them I want to make my own plans, but they do not listen. What should I do?
Moly
Hi Moly,
I often receive letters from teenagers like you. It is common for you to struggle during teenage life, as you are experiencing great changes both inside and outside. But don’t worry. You are not alone and I am here to help you.
Our parents always see us as their little children. They want to take care of us. But sometimes they forget that we are growing up and can start to make our own choices.
Maybe it is still too early for you to buy a house or travel alone. But there are many small things you can do to show your parents you are more independent (独立).
For example, you can do some chores like cleaning the bathroom or cooking a meal. These small actions show that you don’t wait for your parents to do everything.
The same is true for hobbies. If you want to learn surfing (冲浪), you can look for a school and offer to pay part of the cost. To do this, you can use the pocket money you’ve saved up. This is a good way to show adults you are becoming more independent.
Hope you find my advice worth taking.

Too small? No such thing! Size has some advantages (优点), but the sport is about how much more than that. Basketball needs different skills, such as passing and speed. Lots of NBA players shorter than six feet (about 1.8 meters) tall have been successful.
Find a coach who is willing to offer training to improve your skills. If a skill gives you trouble, practice it over and over, and ask for tips on how to better it.
I want to be on a basketball team. I’ve practiced a lot. But I am too small.
Elliot
I like watching TV, but my mum wants me to do other things. Have any fun ideas?
Benjamin
Ooh, lots! Start with coming up with some ideas. What kinds of things do you enjoy most? Make a “fun-tivities” list and keep it handy for when you have no idea.
Don’t know what you like? A trip to the library may help. A librarian can show you lots of hobbies and activity materials. Your mom may have suggestions for you, too, since she knows you so well.
Here are a few ideas:
▲ Create a comic. Do puzzles. Make Origami.
It sure can be hard to focus (集中) your attention at times—especially if a lot is going on around you. Try to find a quiet place to work. Make sure only the things you need for the task are around you.
Next, set a timer (闹钟) for 15 minutes and see what you can get done. When it sounds, stand up and have a walk. Then reset the timer and continue.
I get distracted (分心) easily when I’m trying to get work done. Can you help?
Izzy

Dear Jakub,
My parents plan everything for me, like my schoolwork, my free time and even my holidays.

Izzy
