A. about B. with C. on D. for
about关于;with和……一起;on在…… 固定句型“There is something wrong with sth.” 故填with。
2. —Must I hand in my book report right now?
—No, you ________. You can give it to me next Monday.
A. mustn’t B. can’t C. needn’t D. shouldn’t
mustn’t禁止;can’t不能;needn’t不必;shouldn’t不应该。 根据后句“You can give it to me next Monday”可知没必要现在交。
3. We have ________ milk left in the fridge. Could you buy some on your way home?
A. few B. a few C. little D. a little
根据“Could you buy some on your way home?”
4. After eating three ice creams in a row, Mike got a serious ________.
A. earache B. headache C. backache D. stomachache
根据“After eating three ice creams in a row”可知吃太多冷饮会导致胃部不适,推测出是胃痛。
5. The school doesn’t ________ students to use phones during class, even for checking the time.
A. allow B. effect C. report D. develop
【答案】A
固定搭配“allow sb. to do sth.”
6. —________ nicely you are dressed today!

A. What B. How C. What an D. How an
7. The heavy rain forced the tourists ________ the mountain climbing plan.
A. give up B. gave up C. giving up D. to give up
【答案】D

A. the successful B. most successful C. more successful D. the most successful
9. It was ________ freezing outside ________ we decided to stay at home all day.
A. so; that B. such; that C. too; to D. enough; to
【答案】A
so...that...太……以致于,so后面接形容词或副词,that后接句子;such...that...太……以致于,such后接名词或名词短语,that后接句子;too...to...太……而不能,too后接形容词,to后接动词原形;enough...to足够……来。根据“freezing”和“we decided to stay at home all day”可知,此处表示外面太冷了以致于我们决定整天呆在家里,第一个空格后为形容词,第二个空格后为句子,故应用so...that。故选A。
10. —Why are you still in the classroom? All classmates went home ten minutes ago.
—Because I ________ my homework yet. I need more time.
A. won’t finish B. don’t finish C. didn’t finish D. haven’t finished

Culture shock is something many people experience when they visit a new country. It happens because the new culture is very different from their own. These differences can be surprising, confusing, or even embarrassing at first.
For example, personal space means different things in different cultures. In Germany, people usually like to have more space around them. They don’t stand too close to someone unless they know them very well. But in Peru, people are comfortable standing closer to others, even strangers. This can be surprising for someone from Germany.
Greetings are another area where cultures differ. In Japan, people bow as soon as they meet someone. The bow shows respect. In the US, people usually just say “hello” or shake hands. In France, it’s common to kiss on the cheek when greeting friends and family.
Manners are also different in different countries. In China, it’s rude to stick chopsticks into a bowl of rice because it reminds people of funeral customs. In Mexico, it’s polite to use someone’s first name only if they invite you to do so.
Although these differences can be surprising at first, they are also interesting to learn about. Once you understand them, you may become more curious and interested in the new culture. Learning about cultural differences helps us respect and appreciate other ways of life.
21. Culture shock happens because the new culture is very similar to one’s own.
22. People from Peru prefer more personal space than Germans.

Can you imagine a sea of sand about three times bigger than India? It is the Sahara Desert, the largest desert in the world. It covers 11 countries in North Africa and is over 9 million square kilometers. That’s about 30% of Africa.

Last month, I took part in a volunteer activity at a local nursing home with my classmates.
We arrived at 9 a.m. and were warmly welcomed by the elders. First, we cleaned the rooms and swept the yard. Then we chatted with them, listened to their stories, and sang some old songs together. One grandma held my hand and said, “You make me feel young again.” Her words touched me deeply.

How to stay alive in the Sahara Desert? Marco Rivera, our survival expert, has some tips.
First, take warm clothes and a blanket (毛毯). During the day, cover your body, head and face. Clothes protect you from the sun and keep water in your body. You will also need a warm blanket at night. It can get cold very quickly. Second, try to drink some water at least once every hour. You need your water to last as long as possible. Drink only what you need. Third, try to close your mouth and not to talk. When you talk, you lose water from your body.
